The McSame campaign is totally melting down over the Iraqi government's repeated calls for a timetable. Their messaging is all over the place -- everything from "this proves how awesome the surge is" to "the Iraqis are lying" to "we'll stay as long as we damn well please."
But the debate about whether we should stay until we "win" -- what McSame has been basing his entire candidacy on -- or whether we should leave is over.
Hilzoy points out that McSame’s website doesn’t have a foreign policy section. It has an Iraq section.
I don't see how he recovers.

Krusty!
“I don’t see how he recovers.”
I guess repeating over and over that he was a POW won’t cut it now?
The MSM will work hard towards that.
Other than voting machine and voting fraud…he’s probably toast.
The pictures of Obama, Petraeus, and Hagel ….all big smiles…in the helicopter..says it all.
He’ll recover cause it’s only July- were it October he’d be toast.
I hope Oxdown goes up soon — the fdl front pagers are preempting my material!
But what’s he going to run on? I suppose he could me-too Obama, but that makes him look weak. Obama’s been saying that for years.
Too true, RW.
It’s July, and not enough people are paying attention.
How will we know when it is up? Will it be on the post bar at the top of the page?
Brilliant McCain campaign strategy-daring Obama to go to Iraq and Afghanistan.
I like that green screen. Add a Geritol ad to the mix and I’d really, really like it.
Look out! He’s gonna blow!
He’s runnin on the SURGE man- he was so RIGHT- shows real GENIUS–knowin when ta SURGE—
You mean a noun, a verb, and POW
Lies
Plain and simple
Tried and True
Not only is McBush a SURGE expert- he’s an economic psychologist- able to fuck with people’s minds so that they can see that there ARE no economic problems
They didn’t just dare. They dared and double dared. Goofs ‘r’ Us should be the pet-name of the McCain campaign.
“John McCain for president- he was RIGHT about the SURGE”
He needs to defend the Iraqi/Pakistan border, give him a gun and ship him over.
‘Cause it’s all in your head, dontchaknow.
This was Epu’d on last thread.
Sorry OT, but have we covered this yet?
‘The Bush administration is up to its old tricks again, quietly putting ideology before science and women’s health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is poised to put in place new barriers to accessing common forms of contraception like birth control pills, emergency contraception and IUDs by labeling them “abortion.”‘

Did anyone catch McStain on the Today show this morning?
What a putz!
He kept talking over Couric and ignoring the questions, mindlessly repeating the same talking points over and over.
It was beautiful.
The man was like a freakin’ robot, no emotion, just repetition.
Loser.
John McCain for President
He’s white
Really white
Yes, I thought about that. But that will force McSame into running “Mission Accomplished” ads — and I can’t believe, sadly, that there will not be casualties before we get out. So that will backfire, if he tries it.
Ya gotta know when to surge ‘em,
Know when to purge ‘em,
Know when to stay the course,
Or cut and run.
You never count oilwells
When you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’
When George’s term is done.
Or something.
Kitt,
You really, really need to go to Comedy Central and check out what folks with too much time on their hands have done with that green screen…
BC
Wesley Clark got lots of people considering whether being held by the Vietnamese in the 60’s qualifies him to be president in 2008. Nope.
Iraq will be outta the news as soon as Obama is stateside. No more Iraq. All we’ll hear about until November is how the Democrats are blocking offshore oil drilling (raising your gas prices) and how the Democrats want to raise your taxes. Oh, and gays marrying.
TIme to roll out Old Shoe.
Except for when he loses his temper
Actually, there is a “National Security” section on his website, where he talks about the WOT, missile defense, enlarging and modernizing the military, and some other stuff.
I like it!!!
Bad link, jackie. Here’s a good one.
The casualty count is approachin zero as a limit.
I have a gooper friend who told me that Bush would arrange to hold troops out of serious combat just before the election. They’ve been planning on denutting Iraq as a campaign issue for months. They forgot to do anything about the economy- and they also forgot that if everything’s peaceful- it makes it easier to argue for leaving.
ghostly white.
“that’s not change weak hand be leaving…”
I’m guessing Couric was not on the Today Show. Who else may have done the interview? Or a different program?
Just want to get my beak wet here,I keep seeing how they show these polls about the race being so close,I may be stealing someone elses thunder here.
But I think they keep telling us that so the MSM will try to have us watch their broadcast. The gaffes that I have seen and read Johnny Mac make,it is impossible for me to believe this thing is as close as they say it is.
The flip side of that is,are there that many gullible and naive people out there?
kinda catchy!!!
Uh, Bob? Yes there are.
I think a lot more folks are paying attention than normally would at this time. Folks I know who usually couldn’t care less before November want to talk politics. Housing, jobs and gas prices seemed to slap ‘em up side the head. More and more gas stations are offering up to 10 cents/gallon off for those who pay cash. Folks are buying more basic food items in bulk, buying less processed food. They may not be completely tuned in yet but they’re payin’ attention.
Polls are probably about right…
McCain has greater name recognition
People don’t know what to think about Obama
Still Obama is leading by somewhere between 2 and 6 points.
Six points is a landslide.
If he actually won the election by six points- he would pull some VERY red states into his column..
This ain’t gonna be a blowout though in my opinion.
And then there is always voter fraud. Has there been enough noise and disclosure that the machines will have real oversight/a papertrail etc?
GWB has been President for 7.5 years
Need more proof?
Thank-you…:)
Can’t sell ad time if no one’s watching, and no one will watch if it looks like it’s a runaway. Americans love a horse race. If there’s no horse race, Americans won’t tune in. If Americans don’t tune in, the networks can’t charge high prices for ad space. So, the networks will make it a horse race.
Sounds like Nancy at the Netroots convention, in normal elections politicians were told to mention THEIR talking points and repeat them as often as possible.
They were also told not to get sidetracked from their talking points by answering questions that could not be answered by their talking points.
This tactic did work before blogs got people used to getting answers and used to the idea that GOING OFF TOPIC IS RUDE unless “off topic is the topic ” to quote Suz from the Late Late Nite threads.
New McCain ad out says Obama is responsible for the gas price increase…and ends it with a crowd chanting “Obama, Obama, Obama”.
Yeah, it was Obama in a Bush mask running the country the last 7 years!
BTW If Ohio is critical to winning the election Obama then todays PPP poll isn’t good for McCain. It has Obama up 48-40.
Other recent polls show similar results. Ohio Presidential 2008 Polls
Well, that sounded snide, didn’t it? Thing is, I get totally torqued about the terminally uninterested portion of our population (like, 90% is it?).
I liked that:)
I still expect McSame to get better than 40% of the vote. So the popular vote, I think, will still be relatively close.
But I just don’t see what he’s going to be running on now. A pretty lifeless campaign just lost their central issue.
200 proof maybe.
See my #15.
Lies work.
Fear works.
Yeah Obama’s got a small lead in Ohio—which is crucial if he’s going to win the White House.
Thankee. It’s my proposed theme song for “BushCo: The Musical.”
that was my 1st thot.
imploded campaign leads to desperation leads to
“Campain Vote Rendition”
Start lining up the poll-watchers AND machine monitors, folks.
Yes, but “poor ballot designs still plague elections”, USA Today tells us. How many elderly or illiterate Obama voters will accidentally vote for McBush?
voter boredom is a vastly over-rated commodity, this time around… imho
Cool may I suggest that you include “War Pigs” by OZZY Osbourne
“this proves how awesome the surge is”
So said the crew of MSNBC jerk-offs this morning.
The freaking surge is “working” because Muqtada al Sadr is allowing it to.
Supreme Court is the main issue for both campaigns.
I dunno which one it was then but it was the Today show.
They are interchangeable to me.
falling asleep while awaiting his intro might be pretty effective also.
ya’ think?
Ohio now has a dem governor and a dem secretary of state.
If they let goopers steal an election from under their noses- they should be drummed out of the party.
In the popular vote, 40% is doing awful. Even in the landslide that was 1964 Goldwater got 38.5% of the vote. Carter (who lost in another ‘landslide’, 1980) got 41% of the vote.
I think we can expect McSame to get something in the neighborhood of 43-45% of the vote. What that says to me is that way too many people aren’t paying enough attention…
BC
yeah. i heard tell a’ that somewheres.
Johnny the Joker is facing some hard times. Maybe a trip to the border of Iraq and Pakistan will make things better.
-G
I think Ohio is crucial only in that he’s forcing McCain to campaign in places he doesn’t want to have expend resources. Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky — a GOoPer would ordinarily expect to be able to allow my dog to run the campaign and win.
’tain’t so this year.
BC
Obama ridin around in helicopters with america’s favorite general….discussing promotions–oops- I mean stratergy.
That is a winsome photograph if ever there were one….you just can’t fake the optimism they all project and Obama’s smile a welcome relief from the scowling faces of Dick & little Georgie Porgie.
okayyyy. and, then, um….
It’s unlikely that Obama will win the White House without taking Ohio in my opinion- AND Michigan- AND Pennsylvania.
Rumor out that McBush will pick Romney- and try to take Michigan..
Who the heck are they polling? My head refuses to wrap around the “fact” that McBush is polling anywhere near Obama.
The John McCain Green Screen — standing tall for Jello, Geritol, and — Ex-Lax!!!
’cause when you’re a cranky old fart, your stools are never soft enough . . .
uh huh, and…
oh. sorry. i thot that was the 1st theme.
Boost? Surge?
and because of ethnic cleansing
wtheQQ, just empty the whole power-drink aisle, heh.
I am no big fan of Axelrod, but anyone thinkin’ he’s gonna lay down like Kerry did in Ohio is not paying attention
and although our vaunted leadership will find it unseemly - they (or their annointed surrogates-) need to start making pre emptive noises about Voting Fraud
- cut those thugs off at the pass
We’re into that strange period when pollsters start using thier “likely voter” screens- which are really designed to add to accuracy in the last 30 days before the election- so there is probably some built in error–but dems should know that this thing really is close and Obama doesn’t have it won by a longshot.
The power of Dogma
yes. why is it the MSM never mention that? not upbeat enough? rover told them they’d rue the day…?
i don’t get my news updates from the MSM. i hear their audience is shrinking. ya’ think?
Most important thing going on right now may be the crunching of second quarter economic numbers- if GDP growth was NEGATIVE- it’s a major problem for goopers everywhere. Even 1% positive growth improves their chances.
Third quarter numbers won’t come out until just before the election and will probably be too late to make a difference.
I was thinking the same thing as this post when I dropped in. McCain’s campaign is going on like McGovern’s after it was revealed that his Vice-Presidential nominee had undergone electro-shock treatment for depression. McGovern got his balance back. The same is happening to McCain. The Republican Party is going the way of its predecessor, the Whigs. This has got to make his backers even more leery of sending bad money after good. And it should make us leery of the administration calling off the election on the grounds of national security. That’s their last firewall.
Hi Barbara. How ya doing today? We seem to have bypassed the conversating and blundered into a lecture. Think it’s o.k. to talk in class? or should we pass notes under the desk?
and we shipped several more plane loads of cash to our good friends in the Awakening Councils
. . .and then promptly made the al-Maliki Govt the distributor - hence the Sunni re-ups to the gubmint :D
I read earlier that it was Meredith Vieira on the Today show doing the McCain train wreck interview.
*ducks*
The growth is coming from exports - exports go up when the dollar goes down. The cost of imports (including Oil) goes up when the dollar goes down.
There’s no way in hell Obama can choose Powell as veep, right? Someone please reassure me.
ah. there we go..
consider yourself reassured… by someone with no clout whatsoever, but I did have a good night’s sleep, and ate blueberries for breakfast.
My theory is that McCain, in realty, doesn’t have a chance with the country on his own merit….and that the MSM is citing polls and keeping it looking like it is neck and neck for ratings…and “they” are the ones that are seeding the racial reasons for McCain’s so-called success in being neck and neck with Obama regardless of policies…
That said…there are several options the “powers that be” can take to throw this election and assure continuation of the neocon coup we are currently experiencing…if they can, they will certainly try. We need to realize that they will not give up power easily. We should not be lulled into anything. They will strike when the time is right. They’ve been planning this for years….overtaking the government and permanent Republican rule…make no mistake about their agenda. They are very, very dangerous. Luckily though, some are very, very stupid and very, very incompetent.
Just read that Sunday marks the “100 days until the election” marker. These are peculiar and disturbing times, eh?
There is no way in hell Obama will choose Powell as VP. ;~)
Oddest I can remember since 1968 or so.
Powell is a good soldier and being a member of the repub party has made him quite wealthy. He’s not likely to rock the vote or boat.
aye aye. Please see my 57 variety above.
Hey, lady. How’s it goin’?
McCain is on tv and he looks even older than his 71 years, close to 72.
I think the demographics are interesting, too. Young folks will not be voting for McCain; they want something new. Many old folks truly believe he is too old. Are there that many “middle age” boomers who want the Cranky McC. I don’t think so.
The MSM are strongly promoting the McCain candidacy. I noted last night the puff piece by Kirkpatrick in the NYT that tried to portray McCain as the most effective member of the Senate.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07.....ref=slogin
The same thing about the surge. They all describe it as a success despite its supposed goal of a political settlement having spectacularly failed. The MSM is half propaganda organ, half infotainment.
Pointing out, that’s 12% or so undecided. McBush can swing this state, IF he keeps his mouth shut and sticks with TV ads that he can do over until he gets right.
The TV ads actually make him LOOK presidential and we need to remember that more people get their exclusively from Fox than we have readers at FDL. We need to put that 12 second pause on the air. I could design a REALLY evil TV spot based on that clip.
Boxturtle (Where’s all that TV money Obama is supposed to have?)
Looking “not old” is one of McBush’s biggest challenges- he will start travelling with 80 year olds to make him look youthful…
LOL
Traveling with his mother was sheer genius (until she started attacking Mormons as a “cult”—-oops- there goes Utah?
Not sure about this. It is at best a minor point in their favor. The thing is that most Americans are living in a recession. They don’t need the government to tell them not to believe their lying eyes.
I was there in 1968.
Where were you in 2000?
When has a major city board of elections recount ever been stormed and totally stopped by a powerful congresscritter’s henchmen, with no one ever charged with a crime? (Miami Dade; Tom DeeLAYY)
When has our very own highest court in the land ever, before or since 2000, overturned a presidential election recount ‘because it might harm the chances of one of the candidates?’
YOU WANT STRANGE???!
Sorry for the outburst. Must be the heat. uh huh.
Bush spent a lot of energy last week to get the message across that we are still seeing growth–if that goes away- I think it will make a big difference—we’ll start seeing “recession” in print frequently.
With McBush’s constant blatant, seemingly irrational mirroring of W (even though McCain is totally unpopular with the “base”)…I think he would actually dare to put Jeb in as VP to satisfy the 29%rs who figure McBush won’t last out his term…Just sayin’….remember…he just “visited” with Poppy and Babbwa…couple that with voting machine mischief….look out. JMHO
Attackerman upstairs.
Hi Hon. Too hot, as you can read. I love seeing you think. I hope you’re doing well. We need more like you in this poor tired old world. ;->
see # 92
He’s done a lot of traveling with Lieberman. Lieberman is one homely looking old dude. McCain having Lieberman looking over his shoulder all the time just makes McCain seem even older, in my opinion.
My mom was sharper at 90 than mcsame has been for some time now.
I am with you. I remember watching all the chad counting, the changing rules for a recount. No one can ever forget Saturday Night Live with the well and ridiculously groomed Ms Harris. And the absolute depression with the Supremes stopped the count; “school was out,” as they say.
To give us the most outlandish 8 years in recent history, run by a sociopathic buffoon who was known to be that from the get-go. Even Jeb said, we just never thought it would be George. Guess what?
Lieb. was even amazingly bad in his debate with Shooter. What a pair.
The problem with McCain traveling with Mom is that she looks younger and more vigorous than he does. Sorry, but the guy is stiffer than a cadaver.
Just saying they don’t need to see it in print. They are living it.
i gotta go. spouse is emptying the whole kitchen, literally. it’s time to sand and paint - all around, over, beside, under, twixt, but hopefully not actually ON all the appliances & counter & lights.
Should be the strangest painting project i’ve ever done since, oh about, 1968 or so. no. not green jello. realtor’s off-white.
bye bye gang. stay safe. i promise i won’t come upstairs to bother. just forget i’m here, unless you see a spreading puddle of paint oozing under the door…
P. E. A. C. E.
Apparently, on the eve of Obama’s foreign trip Condi Tells Embassies to Minimize Help To Candidates on Foreign Travel.
What convenient timing! In defense of this a State Department spokesman said they issued a similar directive to SPECIFIC embassies on John McCain’s itinerary on the trip he took four months ago.
Balanced…right?
Hmm! Except that such directives would never have reached those countries like Colombia where McCain and Lieberman made a appearance at the hieght of the “coincidental” rescue operation of Betancourt and several US hostages from FARC. That was just a few weeks ago. It’s not like the Joe and John “dog and pony” show avoided commentary about Obama’s positions on the Colombia-US free trade agreement!
i really don’t know but if they focus on our economic crisis like the housing market crisis is a major issue in the upcoming US Presidential Election and has a significant impact for all Americans where Obama and McCain talk about in http://pollclash.com .just like soaring oil prices are affecting the costs of everything from food to gas and even houses rental. There are also significant issues on local and global environmental impact. While there are many issues, we need to look at our next leader and determine which will have the best course of action going forward. Both candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama are attempting to address the issue and differentiate their positions from one another. And I think that everyone is missing the point of this. We need a new resource. We need a solution to this problem not another way around it…
