I tend to agree with you about emphasizing our differences. The thing is, right now differences are being emphasized and they’re not real. If we don’t discuss them, I wonder if we aren’t making the same mistake Kerry did in not responding to the Swift Boat campaign in a timely way.

People tend to assume that if you don’t answer it’s because you don’t have an answer.

I guess I’d summarize my general feeling by saying that a lot of prejudice has been overcome when two people have been thrown together in a foxhole and need each other to save their lives. It seemed to me the crises we have as a nation, going on on every front, might serve best to help people of all variaties pitch in together. In that case, helping them to understand the crises would be more important than emphasizing our differences.

Even in a discussion of race, it might be important to emphasize that it all may be a matter of straightening the deck chairs on the Titanic if we don’t pitch in and get a grip on economics, civil rights of all, war/peace, and the environment.

I hear you. I just feel as if it might help if their less-ignorant neighbors had more information.

Then too, I suspect some of our SCLM friends who might be comfortable playing along with candidates who are running dogwhistle campaigns aren’t willing to go along with overt racism.

Yes, I understand about the campaign of e-mails and rumors appealing to ignorance and prejudice. I’m just not sure about the most effective means of counteracting it. We’ve been trying to do it by education, at least since the Warren Court, and for those who don’t get it, I think it’s possible at this late date, dialogue might only arouse them to vote when they otherwise wouldn’t.

I live in Texas, so I’m really familiar with the phenomenon.

I think that one of the reasons it’s been such a powerful thing for the Republicans is that they keep it under the radar. I don’t believe that most people are willing to publicly sign on to that kind of nastiness.

After all, the e-mail rumors about Obama have been circulating for over a year now with little public acknowledgment, but the New Yorker cover has about 2k articles on Google News right now, practically all of which talk in detail about how stupid they are and condemn repeating them.
