Given the goober-osity of the media’s lame attempts at racial coverage and GOP pundits expressing outright racial hostility the last few months, it’s no wonder The Daily Show has taken a few choice shots. But CNN’s upcoming Black in America special reports (July 23 and 24) look promising.
We’ve come a long way from Ruby Bridges…but not nearly far enough.
This is a conversation we should have been having all along. We dipped a toe in during the primaries, but never quite delved past the shallow water. Good for CNN for seemingly trying to jump in feet first.
Then again, they still have the Dobbs-o-meter…

Good Morning Christy….
yes we do need to be having a more honest conversation from the Media
Many conversations with Europeans over this election, they seem to be following it closely… Of course they have a VERY different CNN than what we get here …
I’ve always wondered what would happen if we switched the CNN feeds for a week, what would happen. Could be a fun experiment for here, anyway…
One thing that really boggles the mind is that white folks are still pretending that they don’t understand why black folks can use the n-word and white folks can’t (at least, without being total assholes).

Christy,
The WaPo0 has a good guest Op-ed today on Michelle Obama. The front page link title is “Sliming Michelle Obama” while the title on the piece is “Black. Female. Accomplished. Attacked.”
I doubt if it will change anyone’s minds, but it still helps to get the issues out in the open.
Just spotted a sobering note in Juan Cole’s latest — that outside fighters are flocking to Taliban-controlled areas in Afghanistan. Nightmare, meet worse nightmare.
Found in the Athens Airport news/book store found the English book section and the books on the eye-level shelf was Obama’s two books and the book next to them was Media Matters book on McCain ….. wish I had taken a picture of it…
It was also LOTS of fun just informing people about the “Real” McCain…. just throwing out the Keating 5… that invoked the OH’s and they got it…
I saw that this morning, and thought it was really well written. So much of it rings true from just a female perspective, regardless of color, frankly, too.
Overcoming some stereotypes is not easy. Remember the old ones – A black man can’t quarterback in the NFL, not smart enough: ditto coaching in the NBA; Perform well in combat leadership like a white, the list is long and varied. Well, the last big one is about to be shattered and it scares the willies out of a great deal of people. In Texas, the Republican Party had the button ‘If a Black man is elected will it still be the White House?’. We will certainly see more of that crap via Faux more than any other place. Honest discussion is more than necessary, it is the only way to progress as a nation.
Yeah, I think all women are supposed to be miracle workers, multi-taskers and such including the super Mom able to cook the gourmet dinner, make the snacks for the class, and keep the house immaculate, all while working the same number of hours as men.
Then you add the racial aspect on top, it kinda makes me think we might be nominating the wrong member of the Obama family for the Presidency…
I like that CNN is doing this now its a good first step and it might help us during the election.
A good second step is getting rid of Dobbs and Glen Beck before the election after all does CNN want those two around when they want anything from the government if Obama gets elected and TimeWarner has a lot of business with the government.
Also minority news viewing should go way up if Obama wins.
Hi and Good Morning Christy! I hope your family is all well now and not passing anymore colds around.
Morning Christy et al,
My @#$%^ cable co. does get both CNN US and CNN IN. For the most part the IN is much better. But there’s still too much Wolf for my taste.
So Christy, I can’t seem to pull out of the funk I’m in over the total abandonment of the rule of law in this govt. And I have little hope that anything will be made right in the next admin. Bygones is not an acceptable answer. If I’m so down about it, how are you keeping your head above water?
And how are the in-laws doing?
We are all feeling much, much better now — thanks for asking!
Yes dakine01, and after all of that, you are supposed to be horney.
I htink part of the negativity of the Faux’s of the world is they are scared of losing control. That is why the mordern poll tax law of the GOP appeal to them. They don’t want those black and brown and women folks to get too Uppity. Heck, look at McCain and his stupid jokes about violence towards women. The GOP’s effort at preventing Dems from voting, especailly black and brown folks. The Raw story has a story up right now, GOP cyber-security expert suggests Diebold tampered with 2002 election, that people should be paying attention to but because it was rich white folk in Manhatten being effected it probably won’t get much notice. yet.
In-laws are both still in the hospital, but making some progress. So that’s a good thing.
As for the policy issues, I’m looking at it as a long-term project. We went from Russ Feingold standing alone against the Patriot Act to pulling 24 votes on some of the FISA Amendments and members of both the House and Senate willing to stand up and speak about the rule of law and mean it above and beyond Feingold. That’s some progress. Not nearly enough, but it’s certainly something we can keep building on as we move forward. Including the inroads we’ve made with key staffers here and there as well.
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. And, honestly, I’m shocked we held it off as long as we did. That, to me, is the enormous silver lining…and the leverage I want to keep building before the next Patriot Act vote in 2009. You have to let the disappointment go, find the next way to maneuver, and start on it fresh, or they win — and I refuse to let that happen. *g* Too stubborn for my own good, maybe…
Should read “not rich white folks”
Personally I am still shocked that so many Senate Dems are scared of the Right Wing Noise Machine and George Bush. They are more bark than bite now.
Good Morning, I have been lurking around this sight for a while and have found your discusiions to be stimulating and decided to join in.
I am glad that these relations have been moving into the discussion of late however I find it regrettable that the tragedy that was and is our treatment of Native Americans is not part of the discussion.
From the late ninetees through the middle of this decade I managed a fairly large USDOJ grant on a Indian Reservation in SD. I found the racism in SD to be apalling.
“And, honestly, I’m shocked we held it off as long as we did.” Damn straight. Those guys expected no one to wake up long enough to do anything..yet, we fought them to a standstill for how long? almost a year? As someone whose professional career consisted for five years of basically finding and throwing dirt, rocks and other moveable objects in front of companies talking about moving out of our area(or, moving in but also thinking about moving to another place) so that they would take the time to actually look at Upstate NY seriously and look at the actual factual materials we’d send them…this was actually HUGE. We should all be tremendously proud of ourselves, really. But, we must be like Argos…no sleepin’ folks.
Well I obviously have more work to do on Joe than I thought. That door is still open —I think he finds me amusing.
I spent the last couple of days back in a part of PA I hadn’t seen since I graduated from college 35 years ago (ouch). Turns out it is Chris Carney’s district. Not exactly booming or liberal. But a young server at the Ruby Tues. said that there’s lots of energy for Obama at the local U. That was kind of a surprise. For the most part though I don’t think it is a well informed or energized population. Don’t know what good our ads will do out there. But wtf.
Welcome, foothillsmike. Glad you decided to dip a toe into the conversation!
Oh he’p me… I’m trapped at a Badlands hotel where the price of the free breakfast is having to watch CNN. Who the hell is Blanquita Collum? And the topic of this vacuum-headed punditry? “Is Barack Obama too serious?” Yes, Barack is under criticism for “trying to be too perfect.”
So what happens? The Token Black commentator tries to say that Cindy McCain has gotten a pass that Michele Obama hasn’t gotten, and before he can finish his sentence Collum is talking over him… and the camera cuts to her for the rest of HER point…
There’s no such thing as a free breakfast…
When you have folks like Dan Rather adding to the ignorance it’s hard to appreciate how far we’ve come with race relations. But there are many many more miles to go yet.
Welcome to FDL and thanks for de-lurking and adding your voice to the discussion.
For the record, I don’t think there is ever any desire to minimize the various aspects of racism extant in this country. I’d say that for most folks here, racism is an evil that must be dealt with no matter how or where it manifests itself. And that includes the experiences of the Native Americans in various locales, the Hispanics (whether of Mexican or Central/South American or Caribbean Island descent), Middle Eastern, or Asian (or even Caucasian in a couple of isolated areas).
Again welcome to the Lake!
Look forward to more of your posts.
Here in NM racism towards Native Americans exists, probably not as bad as in SD. Taos is small enough where there is, at times, socializing (bars/music etc.) going on between Anglos, Hispanos and NA’s.
I no longer live there, moved down near Santa Fe now, much more segregated.
Welcome to the Lake. Hope you will share some of your experiences with us.
I think the fact that he’s open to the back and forth is genuine in his part, and a good thing. When you find one with an open enough mind to even consider the positions on the other side of things — I mean really consider them and not just do the patronizing pretend faux thing that you get from folks like Issa — that’s almost a miracle these days. We are not going to find perfect legislators. Even the really, really good ones like Donna Edwards and Darcy Burner are going to sometimes vote a different way than we like because they can’t just vote their own conscience, they also have to vote their constituents wishes as well. And progressives aren’t remotely close to a majority in most places…so that has to get weighed in to the calculation.
The key is finding good, honest, progressive folks who want to do the work…and find more of them. And at the same time, educate the public on why this is important and why it’s in their interest. It’s a long-term effort, not something we are going to turn-around in a few months or even years, because the GOP has been doing this since the 1970s. We may have a more powerful presence online, but they have the airwaves, the radio waves and the print editorials sewn up at the moment. We’ve got a LOT of work to do on that end as well…
These days, I’m sorely missing Molly Ivins. We need more of Molly’s sharp witticisms and folksy banter that illuminates as well as it educates headed out into the public view. But I have no idea how we help that along…
A man may work from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.
welcome foothills. You will find a number of compatriots here if you have not already. I think the bigger question is how many fingers do we have to plug the very very leaky dike. Lots of fingers working here to do as much as we can.
Ain’t that the truth. *G*
Oh, racism towards Native Americans gets brought up here, not often enough but that can be understood because it is still a largerly unknown racism for most Americans. I live on a reservation in northen Arizona so I see it happen to people around here. I have a good friend from Pine Ridge and knows all about that kind of crap.
That being said, there are many places to go now if you want to know what is going on in Indian Country. Indianz.com a great news website, and so is Pechanga.net. Indian Country Today is another big news site with some great commentary too. What this means is the tribes are much better informed and are connecting with each other and to the outside edia also. Not as much I wisheed but it is improving.
And foothillsmike Welcome to FDL!! Get your voice to the table.
Personnaly, I would like to see media create position(s) for ombudsmen that would deal honestly with the gaffes, errors, biases that exists and
to refute the idiocy.
On Cspan, they are playing videos from netroots — right now Pelosi is talking — and Gore is coming out in about a minute — just FYI for any who watch to catch it.
hmm… missed that, but I remember watching that interview and he said *something* else that was damned stupid too. Can’t remember at the moment what it was.
I’m thinking that our most ubiquitous, and possibly most abundant national natural resource is Teh Stoopid, and there’s evidently just too much for me to keep track of all of it these days…
mornin’ all.
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs,
on a loosely related note – like many of my fellow firedogs last night, I am struck by the number of soldiers of color in the Obama trip photos, compared to Bush’s usual fare, let alone any of his countless staged photo ops
what the hell ?
It’s not at all shocking: many of these high-level Dems are complicit in signing-off on the illegal surveillance and torture schemes.
You can’t forget that those people live in a different world than we do. That’s a club of predominantly wealthy white men.
Christy at 16: well said.
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
–Winston Churchill, November 10, 1942, after the British defeat of the German Afrika Korps in Egypt
Good morning from Netroots Nation. I am ashamed to say that this is the first time at the convention that I’ve turned on my computer.
Speaking of Indian haters – Slade Gordon is raising money for McCain who had opposed a federal judgeship for him. Indianz.com
Morning, eCAHN — hope you guys are all having a blast. Missing seeing everyone this year. (But you should all be glad I wasn’t there with my stomach flu. *g*)
Morning All :)
OT, but Robin may need our help/support…
Courage to Resist. July 15, 2008
Today Army PFC Robin Long became the first U.S. war resister since the Vietnam War forced to leave Canada and turned over to the U.S. military. While dozens of supporters gathered this morning at Peace Arch Park on the Canadian-U.S. border, Robin was already being transported to Fort Carson, Colorado. He is expected to be immediately placed in pre-trial confinement and eventually court martialed for AWOL, desertion, and possibly other violations of military discipline.

Welcome to the Lake, foothillsmike.
Hi Christy.
Thanks for bringing us back toward an essential conversation.
Sorry you’ve been fighting colds in the family. I wanted to take in the famous blues club here in Austin last night but had a fever and sniffles so I just went back to my room. We missed you here but fully understand the priorities that prevented your coming.
Thanks for the links. Have been following Indian Country Today but thought that it suffered when it was sold.
thanks for the heads up.
Nancy is such a dufus. I was so proud the day she took the gavel. I am totally ashamed now.
Thanks for the heads up.
And ain’t that the truth! I’ve lived all over the country from CDs that were so conservative, I was probably considered a Commie to the joyful time when I lived in the 8th of MA and had Tip O’Neill as my Congressman. That district was so liberal, I was actually a Moderate!
Most of the time though, the districts have been such that I was far more liberal than most of my fellow voters.
You are very welcome :)
I know. I agree. I was there. Gore was the very best part for me.
I’ve seen speculation – fiction! – that intelligence is a fixed quantity per species. When you get too many individuals in a species, the youngest ones have less intelligence than the older ones; keep adding individuals and keep the older ones around longer, and you end up with a lot more of teh stoopid.
(Some days it looks like that isn’t as much fiction as it should be.)
Yes, a blast. So sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. Missed you & Jane.
You can click my name for what I was doing while Nancy was talking.
Morning keynote now on the stream here. They are announcing a new award named for Steve Gilliard.
Damn I miss Gilly!
F*ck the F*cking Yankees!
Schweet! I hope you’re having an awesome time!
hey christy and pups–anyone heard anything about this? repubs fighting for right to use new technology on the floors of congress and dems blocking it?
a rep was on fox this morning talking about it, but didn’t quite ’get’ what it was all about–
i posted this comment in the sundaynewsthread, edited a little.
(and i don’t know what the new ’twitter’ is…)
on fox–
rep. jack colberson about twitter. —on fox and friends, yes, i immediately went to the enemy’s camp to spy…..
”twitter-a new quick way to communicate–can text messages to lists of constituents, from floor of congress ”
(—yeah, i bet that’s who he’d be texting, riiiiight, maybe a kstreet buddy or two…)
”quick.com a new live streaming video onto the internet.”
wants ”congress to treat new media as old media, bring we the people into the halls of congress.”
”they (dems) don’t want sunshine, don’t want the public seeing what they’re doing….i’m not gonna let nancy pelosi take these tools outta my hands….”
said he broke the law by texting his fox appearance announcement, but didn’t by texting an earlier interview, don’t get what he meant. maybe that if it was enacted you can only do official business from the floor.
the blonde says she can’t wait to ’twitter’ and one of the other ’hosts’ is going to help her get it set up, she’s waiting to hear back, i guess you have to submit and wait.
isn’t it fitting that the new foxies craze has the word ’TWIT’ in it? (pictured steve martin saying that)
and here’s a tune to match it
gnarls barkley-go go gadget gospel
pretty hilarious, sock puppet gang.

You might find this from HillbillyReports.com
of interest. “PFC James Burmeister Receives Six Months and Bad Conduct Discharge”
Do tell everyone howdy for me, please. My favorite part of the conference is always meeting and hanging out with the FDL crowd. Am missing that a lot this year. But between the in-laws in the hospital and this week’s bout of stomach flu at Casa Smith, it really wasn’t in the cards this year.
It’s a bummer, but sometimes life crashes your party…
Gavin Newsom up. Introducing Van Jones.
Thanks. Normal sentencing would include the Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD) being suspended for the period of confinement. The sentence is usually referred to as “six, six and and a kick.” I’ll do the link and see what I can dig up from there.
Here’s a fairly non-partisan look at the “Twitter” controversy. From Techdirt.com
Do you think he will leave any time for Jones to speak?
So far it looks like you have a point. Newsom pumping SF environmentalism.
I’m not sure I’ve heard Newsome speak before. His voice sounds a little like he’s channeling Sherrod Brown.
I’m sitting next to JimWhite.
Well, if we’re on the sunny-side-up express this morning, it *could* be faux news. Local restaurant that had good food ran fn the entire time they were open. No longer in business…….karma, baby. Eat hearty; you deserve it for having to listen to cnn tripe.
Here is Van Jones’ bio.
I find it pretty interesting that Drudge has run: “Maliki endorses Obamas winthdrawal plan” in red headline letters for the last 24 hours.
-G
Van Jones up.
Delurking to thank you for delurking. *g* I live in MN, where we pretend to be progressive in our “treatment” of the native people. Shoulda seen the fur fly here when they figured out that casinos (that play to faux-something-for-nothing greed) would bring the reservations Big Money that could provide some leverage in a world obsessed with it. Obsessed in particular when the money belongs to someone else. This is still stereotype land. Fah! Back to lurking.
Second. Steve’s not being here has been a huge hole in this political season.
ftfy.
How long ago was it when he posted at KOS before going off on his own. He had a true gift not only for his excellent commentary but also his recipes. He was so special.
Agree, wholeheartedly, Julia. I’ve been missing Steve’s voice fiercely this year.
Is this who’s speaking now?
-G
barbara — How are things at your house today? Hope all is well…
no one could write about war like he could. It was his focus and what he studied. Few could write about race like he did. And yes, his cooking posts were fab too.
Welcome foothillsmike! Starting tomorrow, readers will be able to submit diaries…perhaps you would be interested in tackling those issues in a diary?! It would be very interesting to hear from someone who has been involved.
If folks haven’t seen the conversation between Van Jones and Carl Pope from the “This Brave Nation” series, you should. It’s a great one. The whole series is incredibly inspiring…
Van Jones talking about environmental/economics stuff. See other comments (JimWhite above for link to bio), and CHS with another interesting link.
When DiFi retires, could Van Jones be talked into running?
Just wanted to pop in and say:
Thank you, Christy for your help yesterday. :) You’re awesome.
RevDeb, I’ve noticed your funk and totally empathize. Wish there was something I could do to help. Thought you should know you have friends who care aboucha.
Foothills: Welcome aboard.
Audrey, you are most welcome. Happy to help!
Doesn’t Van live in NYC area? Thought he did…
Sadly true: Barack “Pinata” Obama. This is what Van Jones thinks we will be seeing after Obama is elected.
The bio page I linked above suggests he is in Oakland.
Welcome, you realize this means you can’t go back to observer status.;)
Thanks much.

So does anyone think that Obama will actually take the reins and push a green agenda?
I’ll be trading in my tinfoil hat for a combat helmet when Pres. Obama is inagurated. “Incoming!”
707!
I am suspicious about the Right Wing MSM’s motivations for producing programs that deal with Black America or race issues at this juncture. Any time over the past 8 years would have been a fine time to run such programs. There is no question that such programs can be helpful in healing the divide, opening dialogue, and etc.
The MSM has a long and nasty history of silencing, hiding, diminutizing, obfuscating and otherwise burying the truth about African American contributions to American society. (Read An Imperfect God – George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America by Henry Wiencek.)
Why does the MSM want to talk about race all the sudden? IMHO, it is to attempt to sabotage Obama. To remind people that he is black and therefore not one of us whites.
(GWOT Continuer Obama is sabotaging himself, but that is another story.)
Totally green agenda? Probably not — not certain there is support for that. Greener than we’d ever get with McCain? Absolutely. I think how green — and how liberal — is in part up to what all of us do between now and January, too…
After Words: Rajmohan Gandhi, author of “Gandhi: The Man, His People, and the Empire” interviewed by Amitabh Pal
This has been rescheduled for 6pm and 9pm et on Book TV on C-Span2.
The country will rediscover its ability to criticize the President. I’m not expecting actual bombs to fall.
Van Jones: We’ve got familiy values. Everyone in the family has value.
Followed: They wanted to discriminate on the basis of who you love.
I have some reservations as to whether now is the ideal time for a national catharsis on race. Looking back, it seems to me like a lot of the barriers have been forever crossed because serendipity, necessity, or a single decision set aside all of the argument and acted. Particularly in sports, the barriers were broken because of action. When I was born, there were no black players in National and American baseball leagues, no black players in the Southwest and other college conferences. Even after those barriers were broken, there was resistence to African Americans playing quarterback, coaching, etc.. To some extent the debates and discrimination go on, but they were broken down by action, followed by repetition, familiarity, and acceptance.
I may be wrong, but I would hate to see a national dialogue do anything to have a negative effect on the election of Barack Obama. His election would establish a precedent which would be of more value, in terms of familiarity and acceptance, than could ever be reached dialogue. At least it seems that way to me.

From Think Progress, another Sunday Times report: McCain Aide Scheunemann Linked To Bush Library ‘Cash For Access’ Scandal
As one commenter noted, Remember when bribery was illegal?
I don’t know how that got responded to you dakine01, it was just a general comment. Server squirrels musta had a few too many last night.
I think the conversation on race is going to happen, one way or the other. The question is whether we want to have it, secretly and only behind the curtains in the voting booth. Or whether we want to air some of it out in the open before we ever get to November. Personally, I think the more comfortable people get with looking some of this honestly in the face a little more — and talking amongst generations of the family about it — the better off we might be. But maybe that’s just me…
Pretty good cook, too :)
I think he would have been amused that Michael Steele was a guest of honor at the right wing convention in Austin the week McLaughlin launched the Oreo comment.
There are degrees of racism. There are some racists who will vote for Obama because he is a better option than 4 More Years of Dubya McCain.
These voters can be influenced by television shows that stoke their racial prejudices. They can be flipped to McStain. That’s why the MSM now wants to run shows about Black America.
It sounds like we could each feel strongly both ways. What will happen will happen, I guess. So far, I’m pleased with the way things are going but started getting nervous when the primary started to tilt toward race and gender. Maybe it I was just proud of myself, that as a white male, I could truly analyze myself and realize that I didn’t give a hoot about either factor and thought both candidates had everything it took to be President.
I think that one of the reasons it’s been such a powerful thing for the Republicans is that they keep it under the radar. I don’t believe that most people are willing to publicly sign on to that kind of nastiness.
After all, the e-mail rumors about Obama have been circulating for over a year now with little public acknowledgment, but the New Yorker cover has about 2k articles on Google News right now, practically all of which talk in detail about how stupid they are and condemn repeating them.
Yes, I understand about the campaign of e-mails and rumors appealing to ignorance and prejudice. I’m just not sure about the most effective means of counteracting it. We’ve been trying to do it by education, at least since the Warren Court, and for those who don’t get it, I think it’s possible at this late date, dialogue might only arouse them to vote when they otherwise wouldn’t.
I live in Texas, so I’m really familiar with the phenomenon.
I agree.
Teddy upstairs on Katrina
Hey, thanks for asking, Christy. Mr. D. is slowly rising up out of the chemo pit. I have a whole, entire, new appreciation for what Jane and beaucoup others have been through. Uffdah! Sun is shining and David’s flowers are in profuse bloom stage. Plenty o’birds. So not all bad.
I hear you. I just feel as if it might help if their less-ignorant neighbors had more information.
Then too, I suspect some of our SCLM friends who might be comfortable playing along with candidates who are running dogwhistle campaigns aren’t willing to go along with overt racism.
Could we be talked into retiring her before she’s ready? *g*
I guess I’d summarize my general feeling by saying that a lot of prejudice has been overcome when two people have been thrown together in a foxhole and need each other to save their lives. It seemed to me the crises we have as a nation, going on on every front, might serve best to help people of all variaties pitch in together. In that case, helping them to understand the crises would be more important than emphasizing our differences.
Even in a discussion of race, it might be important to emphasize that it all may be a matter of straightening the deck chairs on the Titanic if we don’t pitch in and get a grip on economics, civil rights of all, war/peace, and the environment.
I tend to agree with you about emphasizing our differences. The thing is, right now differences are being emphasized and they’re not real. If we don’t discuss them, I wonder if we aren’t making the same mistake Kerry did in not responding to the Swift Boat campaign in a timely way.
People tend to assume that if you don’t answer it’s because you don’t have an answer.
