So I decided to go pay a visit to the "Texas Summit" of right-wing bloggers (officially titled "Defending the American Dream" ) being held here in Austin as an ostensible counter to the Netroots Nation gathering. If they want the public to do a comparison and contrast, I thought I'd help them out.
I was only able to watch for a little while -- heard Erik Erickson of Red State and Michael Steele talk, and watched the nostalgic Ronald Reagan videos they ran in between segments to help boost what clearly were some flagging spirits -- before they realized I didn't have the requisite green tag and booted me out.
I was polite and well-behaved (I even opened the doors for a handicapped woman who was having trouble pushing through as all the young conservative men stood and watched her struggle) but, well, they clearly did not want interlopers. I was hoping to have been in there long enough to hear Michelle Malkin, but the Unhinged One was late arriving and they kept finding ways to stall the crowd, and soon enough my time ran out.
But there were some notable differences with Netroots Nation:
-- I stood out like a sore thumb because I was wearing shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, fairly typical NN/DFH wear. All the male Pubbies, young and old, were neatly dressed out either in chinos and golf shirts or suits and ties.
-- It was very, very, very white there.
-- There were only speakers; no question-and-answer periods. Everybody seemed happy to just be talked to, not to talk back.
-- The speakers were uniformly, uh, subdued about their prospects for the 2008 elections. I think a hari-kiri booth in the exhibit area would have been popular.
-- And there were, well, a lot fewer people. A LOT. You can see the crowd shot above, as it were. I guesstimated (generously) the crowd to be between 200 and 300 people. Below, just for the sake of comparison, is a typical NN crowd -- where the numbers are upwards of 3,000.
That says all I think you need to say about the state of the conservative movement vs. the state of the progressive movement.

Thanks, David, for doing the ‘dirty deed’ for the rest of us.
I think a hari-kiri booth in the exhibit area would have been popular.
Yes! please do us the favor…! ;-)
David, I’m glad you went there so we don’t have to. I hope you showered before coming back here!
Miss Nancy will be so thrilled to hear she might get her ‘SuperMajority’ even though…
No one deserves it less.
Wonder what she’ll do with it?
Thanks for the latest, Dave!
Gee, only 300 people and they still kicked you out!
Everything you wrote is just so symbolic of everything the GOP is about. Was anyone packing heat?
Bless you David for your willing sacrifice…
Talk about doing something to enhance your karma!
Dugg.. You can do the Same!
Thanks David I now won’t bother to see what they up to same old shit les followers as the people are now waking up to what these people are all about “GREED” and that has become SO OLD HAT!
Next year, I guess we’ll have to spring for green tags. I’d rather go to the neocon-con than Netroots Nation anyday. You know they wouldn’t save their Speaker’s ass by bringing a hero onstage to shut down the questions! (They wouldn’t allow questions….)
Sorry wrong linky here to the Diggy
We really do have the numbers to make pivotal changes to this country. The important/real information is out/being seen faster and to more willing ears each and everyday.
Our massive growing numbers, huge money and everything are getting bigger every single day.
The ‘realistic’ Re-pubs’ know this.
McCain can’t even fill a small town hall.
Re-pubs and Repuglites are for the first time in many, many years/if at all individually having to really fight/spend mad money for their seats..
People are pissed and they are not stupid.
We have the truth, we just need to know/believe and push….:)
I’d have loved to be there. Not for long, mind you. But to see for self these twisted perversions of common sense.
Something like ogling the strangeness at a “World’s Weirdness” museum; the specimens in jars, Ripley’s in all it’s finest.
I’d end up feeling badly for them, something is WRONG there, and I always feel compassion for the highly misled, the less evolved.
But only for a short time. Then move on back to home, where there are real people, comfortable familiarity, the later promise of marguaritas and a hopeful future.
But that’s just me.
digg David!
Oh, Oops,, Hi Every one :)
As usual, David you are completely on target! and braver than some of us..lol
Yes, folks who have been paying attention can see, from the Obama machine and now this episode, that in many disturbing ways the difference between how ‘left’ and ‘right’ deal with dissent not so different.
I believe this has to do with how folk’s brains are wired, read some Robert Wright, but what has to happen next is Progressives must recognize this fact and build structures to prevent the hard-wired reactions to dissent from being ‘acted out’. That is, suppression.
What you complain of happens right here at FDL. I asked Wexler at least 8 different ways to explain the House’s failure to act against BushCo. Only one of my questions got by the moderator. Fortutunately, others were on the same track and they overwhelmed the ‘politeness’ barrier.
Wexler never saw fit to give a substantive answer.
I do hope you wore a string of garlic to keep the blood suckers at bay.
I bet that the MSM will ignore Malkin’s convention completely and just cover our convention because Dave’s pictures would destroy the MSM’s attempts to make this a close race.
After all the MSM are not mentioning all the cell phone only users who are missed by their polls.
And no offense to any Lefty Pollers doing computer polls but 9 times out of 10 I just delete the message because I worry about viruses.
I wonder how many other people do the same.
There is a whole world out there
HortaioRove that is as yet undreampt of by your “Math”watching Marcy on the stream over at the ustream. Second box down. Just got back from the middle of nowhere PA.
I wonder if Anthropology has any light to shed on GOP groupings.
Yeah, but I bet C-Span will cover the Malkin mess more.
You can tell a lot about a fellow by the kinds of places he gets thrown out from. :-)
Boxturtle (A preposition is something you should never end a sentence with…so there’s two!)
I love the decor!!!!!! (LOL)
Another franchise opportunity goes begging…Perhaps some encouraging iconography might help.
;>)
um, front-paged on WaPo’s Friday Style section:
In Texas, the Right Boots Up to Gain Strength Online
Only speakers no questions, that says it all for me.Just the reverse of the talking heads we see on the “faux” fair and balanced channel,Many speakers answering their own questions.
So I’m watching a variety of streams and it seems that the events are not going according to schedule—either that or they are on a delay for broadcast.
Since I’ve been away from the computer for several days, can anyone fill me in on what’s going on? Didn’t go this year though did the last 2.
Thanks in advance.
Nancy Pelosi got seriously challenged this morning (see earlier posts today) then she filibustered until Gina Cooper brought Al Gore on to thunderous applause, and a smiling Speaker. You betcha, the netroots love them some Al. Suddenly all was forgiven, and the Code Pink folks were escorted out for protesting the shutdown of Nancy’s discussion.
Markos called Code Pink “jerks” at a later event.
Speaking truth to power, that’s our Netroots Nation….
I’m not there, but that’s my take. How are you?
David, did you take your cootie catcher with you?
– There were only speakers; no question-and-answer periods. Everybody seemed happy to just be talked to, not to talk back.
that screws up the talking points
(I even opened the doors for a handicapped woman — I stood out like a sore thumb
should have started pulling wings off a fly if you wanted to blend in ;}
great meeting you last night at teh FDL/TRexican dinner
e-mail me your phone number and we can catch up.
The right must be seriously depressed to have to watch old videos of Ronnie. And that room they are in looks like a cave - dark and gloomy - just like them.
And once they met Dave, they escorted him from the building? That’s GOP Outreach, at its finest . . .
As you well know, we don’t allow people being rude to guests. You might want to consider that the fault lies with you…a lot. Not to be rude or anything, but you have a tendency to shoot off at the mouth when a slightly less snotty approach would do perfectly fine. It’s all well and good to pull something for effect or to get attention — but when you do it with a guest in a forum where you know that the rules are to stay on topic and be polite, it should come as no shock that repeating the same rude question ad nauseum is not encouraged.
And, perhaps, you should consider learning from that rather than trying to continually repeating the same errors.
And if that doesn’t suit you, there’s always complaining to the folks at Larry Johnson’s forum on how you are trying to convert all of us to your Obamabi crusade. I hear you’re telling everyone you almost have us all convinced…
This going get spun/deliberately misunderstood, faster than anything…
Of course, the small, but the most important fact of we actually DO need a plan/timetable to able to stop this mess/occupation/(declare victory! /s), will get lost in the wholesale spraying of spittle….
‘BERLIN - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says U.S. troops should leave Iraq “as soon as possible,” according to a magazine report, and he called presidential candidate Barack Obama’s suggestion of 16 months “the right timeframe for a withdrawal.”‘

I have never been a big fan of Code Pink. But, if Kos called them jerks, I am starting to think better of them.
!
Better than Steny or Rahm, you can best believe that.
The internet is a small place, word gets around.
Book Salon upstairs with 50 Ways to spend a Trillion
Oh, and Dave — thanks mucho for risking the small crowd Wonderbread convention. *g*
You’ve convinced me. I’m for throwing Wexler out and I’ll follow you anywhere.
U rock but I still say U should have worn a cheerleading outfit.
!!!
hey 4LG, great meeting you IRL last night as well (and all the other DFHs that were there as well)
The schedule got delayed for the Pelosi filibuster. The last afternoon sessions are about to begin. I’m sitting in on the Torture, Habeas and Gitmo session. There is a camera in here so I don’t think I’ll do any live commenting. Feeling kinda tired.
just tuned into it. on the ustream in room 12—window near the bottom.
as opposed to today’s NN coverage at the Times
and, of course, the breaking news: that guttermouthed Digby (Kit Seelye appears to think that’s her given name) is trying to tone down her language
They really Get this movement, don’t they.
David — please refer to the woman you helped as “disabled” or “mobility impaired”. Lots of people take exception to the word “handicapped”.
Funny you should mention that, Jim … I did indeed shower upon return to my room.
You’re so right, Betsy — my apologies. My Cro-Magnon roots are showing.
is wanking jerkin’ off ??
Quite amusing, but I would have liked to have read more. Next time go undercover in chinos and a golf shirt.
At the end of the party last night, the rumor was circulating that Dave was gonna show up at the wankerfest in a malKKKin cheerleader costume. Disappointed the costume didn’t happen, but love the snarky effrontery of it anyhoo. I must say, Firepups are teh Most Wonderful People in Teh World.
Hey gang. I think I’m going to get the credit card out and send some love to Darcy Burner. She was sitting quietly by herself in a quiet corner for the entire session on Guantanamo, Habeas and Torture. That is true courage and deserves some green at Blue America.
Hey Dave…
Glad you made it back alive in time for your panel; it was worth hearing. Scary as can be, but needs to be said…
I think the being courteous thing gave you away, Dave. Rethugs wouldn’t have helped that poor woman, they’d have just stood around (as your description mentioned) and probably laughed openly, if not in secret.
I don’t know what is going on. I don’t spend all day reading 100% of one blog. But I get the distinct impression that there is sort of a feud going between this site and Daily Kos. (Or is it Jane vs. Markos?)
I suspected this would happen eventually, but hoped it wouldn’t. “The Left” seems to be fracturing online. Is it big now? No. But it seems it can only get worse.
Is it because of the Hillary thing? I hope not. I am a feminist. I am 55 years old. I am not stupid. I am positively appalled at too many of Hillary supporters’ actions after she lost. (I haven’t seen it on the other side, but I hear it is there.)
Keep it up, folks, and the GOP will be back — in spades — in 4 years. I have seen it before. In fact, my whole life. Whether you like Hillary, or Obama — or both, we MUST stop this cycle.
(I even opened the doors for a handicapped woman who was having trouble pushing through as all the young conservative men stood and watched her struggle)
helping someone who needed a bit of assistance? Geeze Dave, you’re lucky you got in at all. Might as well have worn an Obama shirt! ;)
