Donna Edwards gave a characteristically uplifting and provocative speech tonight for the keynote address at Netroots Nation. I'm sure the entire speech will be available soon, so be sure to check it out.
But especially striking was how she tackled the Barack Obama problem. Obama's absence here, frankly, has taken a lot of air out of things, but even more so is the general sense of disappointment with Obama for his recent rightward shift, especially his behavior with FISA. So Edwards -- who has been an Obama supporter from way back, but also seems as disappointed as the rest of us -- tackled it head on, as she always does:
I was an early Barack Obama supporter and I'm really proud of that. But it doesn't mean that the presidential candidate that we have, the nominee that we have to stand behind now, that we have to be silent when that nominee is not saying the things that need to be said to our community, and doing what we need them to do for the country. So that's an important lesson.
And that's an important lesson. And it's a lesson that I learned, actually, when Bill Clinton became president. Because when Bill Clinton became president, many of us on the left, liberals and progressives, became very silent. And that was a mistake, because that mistake brought us some policies that were really not so great. And so we really can't make that same mistake with President Barack Obama.
But we need to be on the job today to make sure that he, and not John McCain, is elected as president of the United States. And don't be fooled about that.
... Finally, I want to share with you that not on any day, by any stretch of the imagination, do I believe that the United States Government should be listening to my phone calls. And if they do, and if they decide they want to listen to my phone calls, then they need to go to a real court and get a warrant.
And I want to tell you that just temporarily we lost that fight. But it's only temporary. Because it's going to come back. Because there is no way -- it's about the American public being smarter than the politicians in Washington.
Thanks for having the courage to say that, Donna.

Bless you Ms. Edwards!
hi david
Wow.
That took some guts.
I guess Jane and Howie hit it out of the part on this pick.
This is what a United States Senator looks like early in her political career.
Thanks David.
We’re gonna hold their feet to the fire on that…!
Love her. But not convinced we can stuff that genie back into the bottle.
I don’t know if I can get over the Obama FISA vote. I remain pissed—and pissed enough not to vote in the pres. or rep. races at all. Just stick to the locals.
should have been.
I guess Jane and Howie hit it out of the park on this pick.
Hi david! was great meeting you last night.
Thanks for this post on the admirable Ms Edwards.
yep
would love to see her and Steny battle it out over Mikulski’s seat—should Babs decide to pack it in. For all the good she’s done us lately, it certainly is time.
Great speech. I am impressed. Now let’s see if she can keep it up. Have to say I am still generally pleased with my junior senator.
Thank you Ms. Edwards! And David, thank YOU for this post and all your good work at the “festival”. Donna Edwards really does rock, and whenever she speaks out, which is always a hard hitting punch in the gut of some Bu$hCo atrocity, I feel so proud of what we all did together to get her where she is. She’s a real shaker and we were the movers.
Now we need some more of same please in WashDC.
Thank you Donna! And thanks David!
Dammit, I missed this, I had to spend most of my afternoon picking cat hair off of my laundry.
Instead of being cynical for once, I want to have Donna’s back.
First they came for my Fourth amendment….
I think she needs some positive feedback.
A better voice than her predecessor.
NOTE: I am absolutely fine and now have things distributed among more bags, and also am leaving stuff at home. But …. look what happened to my wheelchair,
Wow, a poltician who speaks sensibly and truthfully.
Keep it up Donna Edwards.

Popping wheelies in the hopper eh?

geez, were you carrying bricks?

computer, power cord, snack, camera, hairbrush, all the papers they gave us the first day
It is too late for Steny to move to the Senate now. He’d have no power in the Senate. He has all the power in the House now.
LOL! With a three year old and a 4 year old to chase (grand niece and granddaughter),I wish I had so much time. Raising kids (all boys) have made me so practical, I would have most likely decided it “would wash out next time” or if desperate, I would have put it in the dryer along with some fabric softener on a wash rag ’cause this gets out most fuzzies and cat hair.
Cat In Seattle
You know what I wish. I wish Donna would come back to the Lake and tell us how the inside goings on happen in the Senate. Her first daaaz “at school”, the glad handing, sizing up of who’s a friend and who’s gonna be an obvious enema… that kinda thing.
She seems the type who’d be glad to “share”. I hope she does.
hehe
Yeah. I also like the fact that she used the word, “liberals.”
She also has “blocked” for all the other liberals on the Hill. It’s a lot easier now for them to echo her sentiments.
You mean in the House .. not Senate
dugg it
The practical side of Edwards’ election is this - the Goopers and Rahm/Steny types will be using telecom money to fund her primary opponents. And there will be primary opponents. If they have any sense at all, they see her as a threat. We have to be prepared for that.
I had so much fun I may never drink again! Hey, NDFG and Spook. Are you here newtonusr?
yes indeed!
I do believe that is a “707!”.
Life is so tough. I have such a crush on Donna Edwards. And Darcy Burner. And Debbie Cook. I’m in wuuuuv. Then there’s Sam Benett, but I prefer to think of her as “Siobhan”. Sigh. They’re all off the market! Boohoo. I send them bucks, with tears streaming down my cheeks.
How can there be Congress without them there? How? How could that be? No! Love will find a way!
I have a mancrush on ol’ Charlie Brown too. What a hunk. That is a little easier for me to handle. I can have a beer with the dude sometime.
Donna Edwards is doing exactly what Naomi Kleinf agised us netroots. On Democract Now this week. “Tell it like it is”. When all these smart progressive women get on the job look out you rethug painted hussies you are about to get your asses handed to you. Jus sayin oow! Go girls.
Must have been the snacks, you always seem to be loaded for bear.

P.S. Has McCain fired the strategist who helped craft the concept of encouraging Sen. Obama to go to Iraq? Because after seeing some of those Youtube clips of the soldiers lined up and meeting Obama, McCain is kicking himself for encouraging a political wonder for the Obama camp.
I am, indeed!
Are you shitfaced again, Loo Hoo?
is everyone enjoying austin?
FWIW, many of her colleagues will try to make her pay an enormous price for this kind of forthright speech. Steny already wants her gone. John Barrow, Heath Schuler and all the other Blue Dogs will be looking for any chance to embarrass her. She just took on the next POTUS and I’m sure alienated some in the Black caucus. She’s depending on liberals and the blogs to watch her back.
I have a question for the diggers out there. What happens when a post gets past the “Magical 30″ diggs?
Do pony rides become free? Everyone gets a lollipop - what?
Bullseye.
I’m off to bed. Take care and enjoy.
Makes me want to head for Maryland and carry huge jugs of water for Donna, as long as she keeps up with the straight talk. I have no reason to doubt that she will.
Again? I haven’t done that since college. It was so cool to meet everyone! Where are you?
I just saw a clip of Obama on the local teevee station. He was in a gymnasium crowded with soldiers. He tossed a b-ball from three-point zone.
Nothing but net.
the more recommends, the higher the digg number, the more likely the post will be on the what’s popular or hottest stories. that moves the post up the digg page and increases traffic to the lake and spreads the word about the post.
Good evening everybody.
I just got here. The schedule looks a little different than usual. No Late Nite?
Are we going to have Late Late Nite tonite?
Just wondering.
Hey! No messin’ with Donna! Anyone makes trouble for her, FDL let us know and we’ll spring into action! I will certainly remember to check what is happening in her district during the next primary season.
g’ntie dr (no pause) dick
It’s a really cool city, Suz. Haven’t been here before. There’s a big event for Houston volunteer types tonight.
My understanding is that some, perhaps many, people use Digg to help them locate posts on particular subjects. It tells them which posts a lot of readers have approved of. Thus lots of Diggs means more exposure for FDL posts, in theory. That is the belief that drives us Diggers.
I have heard that 30 is some kind of magic number, but I don’t know exactly why. Maybe somebody else here does.
Anybody have a headcount for NN?
got a toon ready to go
There are some Youtube clips and it is pretty moving to see so many African-American soldiers meeting him.
McCain is a dope, this is very good for Sen. Obama.
-G
P.S. Sen. Paty Leahy has a cameo in the new Batman film.
I hate this phrase but it is appropriate here;
Paradigm shift.
MFr’s better get used to it.
After eight years of freakin’ Nazi tactics where any dissent has been treated , literally, as treason, truth to power sounds good to me.
by the way: Dugg
Get out.
Srsly?
There were lots of “early supporters” of obama, they shared one thing in common, whether moveon or Neiwert or FireDogLake or Fonna Edwards, they made their move too soon (hope you’re doing ok, Ernestine). Now for some reason they can’t be honest with themselves and admit the’ve made a mistake. That’s ok, obama will fuck up lots more things before the convention, you’ll have lots more chances. Live and learn.
yes, i did. i’m tired. been a long day of longing to be there. i read and watched everything.
sorry,
and thanks.
Pat Leahy in Batman, now I have to see this.
Also, I don’t think Obama, or anyone in the Obama camp, should take what Edwards said as taking him on. What Donna Edwards said is just common sense and good politics. Only a mindless Obamabot would think otherwise.
I remember a story about a meeting the Eleanor Roosevelt set up with FDR and some civil rights reformers -I think it was civil rights. FDR told them he was in favor, but that I didn’t see how their program was politically feasible. But he said if you guys can push me on it hard enough in public, maybe we can get some of it done.
I think Obama is fundamentally and honestly too centrist to have FDR’s attitude, but if is as smart a politician as he is supposed to be, I think he should think that way, especially on issues where he has flubbed out, but the public opinion is on the correct side -the FISA bill for one example.
Well, at least we’ll have some guidance through our travails. Thanks loads.
i heard he was a huge batman fan
Kid you not.
-G
Unless Steny moves very quickly and very dramatically to the left, we’ve gotta beat him in the Democratic primary in 2010.
link to leahy in batman
I’m definitely seeing it now…
Perhaps you are right, however, the corporate media still insist, despite all polling to the contrary, ending the war in Iraq, reproductive rights, universal health care, and a populist view toward economic policies are “far left” positions.
I think it has to do with David Broder’s Archaeological ventures into “middle America” determining by anecdote the “prevailing sentiment” of Americans.
And of course their supreme dislike for DFH.
3000 is what I’ve heard. Pretty cool.
Pat Leahy on IMDB.
-G
speakin of toons, here’s a cute one.
:)
I wouldn’t mind seeing a very concerted, focused campaign to take out just one DINO critter, and Steny would be my choice. Big shockwaves.
Thanks Suzanne.
-G
Then again McCain had a cameo in The Wedding Crashers.
Molly Ivins points out an old political axiom. ‘Ya gotta dance with them that brung ya’. Didn’t say every dance. You only get so much action for the money. Time for progressive to rock the house and the senate. Donna can dance but can she rock&Roll?
National telecom boycott!
They spy on you without a warrant they don’t get your money. I dumped ATT yesterday cost em $1,200.00 a year. multiply that times a million is a kool $1.2 billion not chump change for residential. Now if all progressive businesses climb on board the Freedom Train say $50 billion
You’re in the wrong place. Most everyone here understood that Edwards was the last liberal in the Democratic race.
I’m voting for Obama, among other things, because of the SCOTUS nominations, universal health care, Iraq, environmental issues, and hopefully greater transparency in the markets. Not voting for Obama will be interpreted by Republicans and white supremacists as support for them.
When was the last time you contributed to McCain and how much did you give?
Thanks for driving FDL traffic. Did you digg the post?
SPOILER ALERT!
Leahy’s micro-cameo in Batman.
With helpful zoom in so you can actually recognise him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTo4Z0BD81g
What a rip. I thought he had a real role, with lines.
Good points, yet most of tghe polls i have seen shows me the DFH viewpoint is actually quite mainstream.
Freakin’ Baby Boomers or sumthin’.
I think you just did.
Do you realize how much money and effort that would take? Also, what campaign manager is going to take that job on? Very few.
Yes, there will be a late late. Thers was late night, we just didn’t call it that.
I think you said it just right.
I don’t think he left us much choice, when he negotiated directly with the WH on FISA.
You’re absolutely right, however, it’s a daunting task.
Pix of netroots!
Don’t have to defeat Hoyer, just send him to back benches. More and better Democrats in Congress could do that.
I guess, more and worser Republicans would do that too, but that is off the table for now, looks like.
Agree. Diaries start on FDL Monday. Write one on this! I dumped AT&T about 8 months ago for Sprint (cell only), but I’m happy to be saving the cost of the land line. I’ve never missed it.
good cause i promised them a cartoon and i’ve seen what the pups are like when they turn into rabid lambs
FDL did not support Obama. This is simply a fact. Some individual authors did, but they did not endorse at FDL, I guarantee it. FDL endorsed no one. Individual authors had preferences, of the top 3 I do not think Obama was the #1 choice. Many did not have any preference at all.
cartoon upstairs
The role is a bit larger than what was shown, he has a line or two.
-G
They scare David Brooks? Hmmm, might be worth it… ;)
Nice Desserts! I thought people were getting snoggered there. But it looks more like they are chowing down.
different crowds, different parties i suppose
thanks goodness. Maybe I will see it now (I like ‘political cinema’), and close my eyes for the gory last half.
Hey Ian, OfT that post you did “FED: Responsibility is for the little people,” was awesome. Can some liberal 527 make that post into a commercial?
You nailed it about the discount window and it’s so damn timely. City’s numbers came in better than expected and I immediately wondered how much had to do with helicopter Ben.
thanks Boo.
Contrast my Senators: Boxer and DiFi!
This is indeed what we need 534 more of.
And we can do it. The citizenry is sick of the vile ReThugs and their pals the ‘Democrat’ Party.
I do intend to shove this statement down the throat of every Obambi supporter I can find.
Just so.
The Democrat Party? Dude, you sound like either a freeper or, worse still, Larry Johnson.
You think that’s a Gooper-sounding comment, read this.
nite david
Good idea, because letting the Republicans continue to control the WH will really show ‘em.
You know, when if the Democrats at the start of the great depression refused to vote for FDR, who ran on a moderate wimpy platform, had only let the Republicans win, so that people could starve and pro-Nazi foreign policy would have been carried out, the whole history of the world would have been better. Don’t you think?
I don’t think you have any right to tell someone like Deb how to vote.
I’m not planning on voting for Obama either: I’m only voting for democrats who stand up for my rights.
With AT&T outright branding the Denver Convention as their own, one would have to be blind to just vote straight ticket.
Accountability NOW!!
Surely people at Firedog Lake do not believe whoever becomes the President of the United States will be an all things perfect and progressive candidate. That is the business of the people. People should go to that New Yorker so many were screaming about last week and read the story inside the covers. It presents Obama as very much a political player who wove his way through Chicago Democratic politics and politicians to get where he is today. They should not be surprised to find that in many ways he resembles a younger generation Bill Clinton; that is, he is a mixed bag and always has been. He will in no uncertain terms be better than John McCain, but netroots will have to keep on advocating. His stands on gun control and religion were way out in the open all during the primary campaign. The FISA vote is very troubling, and in all cases he needs to hear that there are people who value the Bill of Rights as they were written more than a single candidate or a temporal issue. But please, let’s get over the idea that a President is some sort of savior. I voted for him because it does seem to me that he takes his counsel from a wide swath of intelligent people. That alone would be a refreshing change after the last 8 years.
Wow! Donna Edwards for Vice-President.
Of course I have such a right.
I had a similar thought. Perhaps she could form a Presidential Exploratory Committee for 2012 to get her name out more, and then run in 2016 with this running mate:
Donna Edwards/Alan Grayson 2016!
I may even start believing in the Flying Spaghetti Monster if that actually happened.
