And it is in that hope and the fight for something better that change occurs.
Yesterday, Jane made a big announcement about a change that is coming to FDL: we’re adding a diary blog so that you can lift up your own voice to help convince others of a needed action or to educate about something that needs correction. FDL won’t be going anywhere, but we are adding another layer that is run on the power of YOU.
Because it is in the courage of individuals, standing up for what is right — sometimes alone, sometimes with like-minded folks — that the ripples of change get started across the surface. Without those ripples, nothing ever changes. But with them? Anything is possible.
For example: today is Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday. From his early years as a young dissident lawyer on the run (YouTube) from government agents through his 30 years of imprisonment, all the way through to the end of apartheid and his current fight against global poverty and AIDS, Mandela has remained a fighter. And, more than that, he has held on to hope:
…For the first 14 years of his imprisonment, Mandela’s view of the world was a desolate courtyard, stripped of all vegetation and boxed in by tall concrete walls, crowned with razor wire. Between that and his days working in the dusty stone quarry, Mandela was desperate for some form of life. So in 1978, he convinced prison officials to allow him to start a garden in the courtyard.
Not only did the garden provide an escape from the depressing routine of prison life, it also provided Mandela with a place to hide the manuscript for the autobiography he’d been scratching out on whatever scraps of paper he could find.
Shortly after he planted this garden, his granddaughter was born and he named her Hope. In his book Long Walk to Freedom he writes:
“During all my years in prison, I had never lost hope—and now I never would. I believed deeply that this child would be part of a new generation of South Africans, for whom apartheid would be a distant memory. That was my dream.”…
Imagine a world where Nelson Mandela had simply put his head down, kept his mouth shut, and never acted to achieve something better for his family and his nation. Think about what Nelson Mandela and the other activists in South Africa were able to accomplish over a long, long fight for freedom. Thank goodness they never gave up after hitting the first or second obstacle or more. And think about what they are still working for today.
Far too often, folks feel helpless and hopeless in the face of some injustice or problem, when tackling it individually seems less than useless. We are hoping that Oxdown Gazette will help give you the tools to connect with like-minded activists, to talk together about potential solutions, to devise a strategy to push for change…and then to go out together to make that change a reality.
We also wanted to give more people the tools to watch the machinations of government and to point to problems that need to be addressed. There are so many, from the community level to the national one, that it has become nearly impossible to track them all at once. More eyes, more oversight, and hopefully more accountability is on the way. But that is up to you — all of you — as much as anyone.
Something that Nelson Mandela wrote in his autobiography, Long Walk To Freedom, has always resonated with me:
After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.
This is true for all of us, every single day. Citizenship, after all, is something that we have to DO. Every single day.
So many people have stood up and done the necessary work to make change happen through the years. Our nation needs that now as much as at any other time in our history. Will you stand up and lead on some issue? What will be your first call to action? Because you have the power to be the change you wish to see.
You just have to figure out a way to take that first step, and then keep moving forward…

Major OT –
I’m at the “Fuck” Panel at Netroots Nation – with Jesse Taylor, Digby, Lee Papa, Kevin Drum, Duncan Black, Amanda Marcotte.
Ooooh, awesome. Do tell what’s going on. How hungover is everyone this morning, for starters? *g*
Everyone is very subdued, which leads me to believe people are hangin’.
Atrios is quoting SUCK ON THIS.
bwahahahahaha I’m sure if someone is there from O’Reillys show, we’ll be seeing that clip later. Did they send a stealth camera guy again? Or do they only do that to Robert Greenwald?
Hmmm, looking around….nope, don’t see any brownshirts.
John Dean, down in Exhibit Hall 4, is instructing bloggers on how to combat the ”matrix” that the conservatives have created over the past 30 years.
Morning Christy,
hope you’re feeling better.
What an inspiring post
and bother, I keep forgetting to refresh the page to see new comments, beings that the new comments banner is disabled for now.
BTW, for those who aren’t at Netroots Nation, the videos will be archived, so you can watch later.
Need more coffee…brb. (And I’m not even hungover in Austin this morning.)
Christy,
According to this blog post from the NY Times last night Fox is not covering NN08 as they don’t want to be forced to be ID’d as “Opinion Media.”
John Dean says that separation of powers is the spine of this country, and that Cheney doesn’t like a level playing field.
Am feeling much better, thanks. Mercifully, the barfing has subsided and my fever is down to a low grade level this morning. And, for the first time since Tuesday, I’m having coffee. Hallelujah!
bwahahahahahaha “the matrix” — very clever of him
HAH!
“Congress has lost its spine.”
APPLAUSE.
btw, huge thanks to watertiger and BT for giving us all a taste of what’s going on in Austin. Missing seeing you guys there — so it’s much appreciated!
yay!
Dean just gave a veiled reference to testimony he will be giving in D.C. in 10 days’ time regarding the spineless Congress.
Marcy may want to attend that…
John Dean: “Mitt Romney is Richard Nixon on Prozac.
Rudy Giuliani is Richard Nixon on crystal meth!”
And next up is Cass Sunstein.
Lee Papa avoids only two kinds of jokes — assassination jokes and rape jokes.
He was then commended for his high standards.
[laughs]
Lee Papa is effin’ hysterical.
Digby says she avoids jokes about people’s looks.
HJC scheduled a hearing on The Imperial Presidency coming up on July 25th at 10 am — I bet Dean is a witness at that one. They haven’t announced witnesses yet for it.
IIRC, he is the Rude Pundit. Do IRC?
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs,
Christy hope you are feeling better today. thanks sooo much for yesterday’s liveblogging.
summoning her best Chip Monk – It’s A Free Concert Man !!!
Yep.
Atrios: ”LEAVE JOHN MCCAIN ALOOOOOONE!”
Ahhhhh…second cuppa coffee. It’s so nice when your tummy gets back to normal. I’ve been living on water, broth and weak tea for two days. Ugh.
Amanda Marcotte almost got kicked off Google ads for a post titled, “Defend blowjobs.”
Atrios: “Why does Google hate blowjobs?”
Good morning.

So, anyone already working on their first diary for when Oxdown goes live on the 21st? (she asks curiously…)
From NPR: Democrats FAILED to get the 2/3 majority they needed to get the oil companys to drill on existing land leases before opening more.
Does NPR ever use the word FAIL and Republican thusly?
They do it all the time in their reporting concerning Democrats.
In my days before my current addiction to FDL, I used to read Rude Pundit out loud several times a week to my husband.
He is effing hysterical. I agree.
I have a much busier life now than in those days, but, thanks for the reminder of his great sense of humor. I’ll swing by his site again.
some of the early birds were talking about it *s*
Markos is here. He is also shrill.
I’m thinking. I’m thinking. There are so many commenters here who have such a better grasp on a lot of issues. I’m pondering what my little voice can share….(like Winnie the Pooh, tapping my little headie…think, think.)
btw, gang, I updated above, but I wanted to post it here as well:
As a reminder, we are doing some site work, and the “new comments” notice has had to be temporarily disabled. You’ll have to do a manual screen refresh to see new comments. Sorry for the inconvenience, but we’re trying to do some upgrades. Thanks much for your patience!
And, as I said yesterday, all the work we are doing on FDL isn’t free labor. So if anyone wants to chip in a bit, we’d certainly appreciate it. Thanks mucho! (And thus ends the beg.)
Kind of uppity of Mandela to celebrate a birthday…he was soooo uppity he thought he should not have served time in prison for the crime of being a negro, of all the nerve.
Here’s a lesson I had to beat into myself from when I first started blogging with Jane way, way back: it doesn’t have to be perfect. I’m a bit of a perfectionist (I’m sure no one has noticed my anal retentive streak *g*), and I had to overcome that and just post. Sometimes, it is the stuff that I have written on the fly that catches fire — it’s weird, but true.
So, write it from the heart and from your gut level instinct of what motivates you — and you’ll most likely hit a nerve with someone else who thinks the same way. And then it sort of builds from there, eh? You’ll be great!
Eh? Merci, Mom on the Mend. With all you do, you still have time to lift us up. I appreciate it. I do.
I spent some time this morning going through YouTubes of Mandela’s speeches and such to pull some material for this post. And I have to say, I was stunned at the level of racist vitriol on some of them in the comments. It’s not that I’m not aware of racism, fergawdsakes, but this stuff was incredibly vile and base. Truly.
Sometimes, you look at where we are and think how far we’ve come. And then something smacks you right in the face and reminds you just how much further we have to go.
Anyone seen the adverts for the series that CNN will be doing next week on being black in America? Pam Spaulding had a piece on it the other day. It looks intriguing — saw a commercial for it yesterday. Anyone see any previews for it yet?
OT:
Maryland policy spying on anti-war and anti-death penalty protesters in conjunction with der Heimatsicherheitsdienst.
A couple of interesting things from the article:
Larry Pudlow thinks we are a nation of whiners too.

I had that stomach flu for a couple of days a couple of weeks ago. The downside is obvious. The upside is that I lost 3 lbs. in two days.
Some days, doesn’t it feel like you are reading The Onion when you pick up a newspaper? Honestly?
Yeah, I was telling egregious yesterday that I had lost 10 pounds in three days. It’s a tough way to lose weight, but at least there’s that silver lining, I suppose. (Although now that I am able to keep fluids down, I’m sure it will be right back…)
” “…today is Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday.”
Speaking of brave men. Jefferson must have influenced him.
“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”
Thomas Jefferson
Thanks John Dean!!!!
Mine has stayed off — so far. All of my summer clothes are fitting more comfortably in the waist. Trying to maintain that. But now it has gotten too hot this week to bike ride (90s), and I need the exercise too.
Sure wish I was at NN08. Sigh. Maybe next year.
Okay … why does Atrios want to leave McSame alone?
I don’t get it, it seems to me that he desperately needs a macaca moment.

BREAKING NEWS: U.S. and Iraq call for deal on ‘general time horizon’ for American troop withdrawals
(headline at MSNBC- no story yet)
just want to say I LOVE NELSON MANDELLA…triumph of the spirit…some huans (a lot) really teh sukketh however
oopsie one L for Mandela
I believe Duncan was being snarky. That’s his usual admonition from the media’s standpoint, eh? *g*
my definition of Little Lord KuntlerLOW,is that he is a ridicoulously high paid fop, turned out in Turnbull and Asser
the campaign to date has been one BIG macaca moveable feast . . . and of course not a peep outta the riblickers – haven’t watched the KO from last night yet, but noticed he finally alluded to it
That makes more sense … I guess I could have used a sarcasm marker.
I do know some people who are holding to a rope-a-dope theory wrt to McSame for this campaign. Apparently they believe that if we simply give him enough rope he’ll hang himself. I don’t buy it, myself.

Hi all!
I’m back from a trip to the Left Coast for a conference. (I’ll spare you the laundry live-blog . . .) The SF Chronicle had a great story while I was out there, describing a 6 minute documentary film:
YouTube of the film here.
Legislators smile when idealistic high school students show up in their offices.
Legislators get nervous when the students come back a second time (Hey, they’re serious!).
Legislators get busy when the students come back a third and fourth time . . .
Gotta love it!
I LOVE MARKOS too
btw – 14 years of this before he got a garden
Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela !
mo’nin’ all.
Man, I tried to access fdl several times yesterday afternoon until I realized that that was when the Big Announcement was coming down. And I couldn’t find out what it was! sigh.
If one writes a diary, does it have to focus on just one topic? I mean, I have serious ADD issues. am easily distracted from one scandal to another.
Unfortunately, I think McCain has had several macaca moments that have out-macaca’d the Original Macaca moment.
I can only access FDL about half the time. Anyone know what’s goin on?
It’s your diary. *g* So…um…how would you like to write it?
Actually, it was the article on the other side of the page that reminded me of The Onion: the one about “terrorism” funds going towards first class flying accomodations for top brass. The Post is down, but look at the article, in particular for the pictures.
The surveillance article gave me the creeps, first of all by reminding me that local police departments have “Homeland Security” divisions, and also for the fact that this surveillance data was shared with the NSA (down the road). The nomenclature of the database was also sinister.
Yes, we’ve been doing site upgrades and adding code for several upcoming changes. Since we run 24 hours a day, we’ve been having trouble keeping it confined to off-hours, which we try and do for the most part. But sometimes, troubleshooting comes into play. We’re working on it. Thanks for everyone’s patience…
Nelson Mandela at least managed to get his name removed from the watch list. Unlike a certain CNN reporter. I’m loving this kerfuffle. Reminds me of Mark Twain saying something like never start a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.
Thanks for the explanation.
A little more on the “withdrawal schedule” from the NYT- note that this is Bush’s version of the story- the Iraqi version will be quite different one suspects:
“WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States and Iraq have agreed to seek “a general time horizon” for further withdrawals of American troops from the war.
The White House says President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said the timing of troop reductions should be part of a broader security agreement being negotiated between Washington and Baghdad. It described troop withdrawals as one of several “aspirational goals.”
The White House says the goals would be based on continued improvements on the ground in Iraq and would not be an arbitrary date for withdrawal. “
You’re welcome. We don’t talk about what’s going on in public much because, frankly, there are an awful lot of asshats out there who like to take advantage of that sort of thing. But it’s pretty obvious if we are adding a new feature that it takes a LOT of behind-the-scenes work. (And I mean a LOT of work.) And, unfortunately, that requires a disruption now and then to get things where they need to be.
Truly sorry for any inconvenience for folks. But I do think the “growing pains” will be really worth it when you see what the results are meant to be. It’s going to be really amazing stuff. I just hope everyone likes it as much as I hope they will…
Like this one…
To think back in the day, twenty comments was a big deal.
Hell, I still remember when we finally got more than 4,000 hits in a single day. *G*
Israel claims to have captured Al Queda members who were planning to kill Bush…
Bullshit?
Ummmm… Yeah.
Ok, what the hell is going on that they are trying to distract us from?
Seriously. There must be something they are doing that they don’t want us to see. Chertoff telling us yesterday to be very afraid, Dear Leader threatened.
They are ramping up the fearmongering. Something big must be going on.
They’ve decimated the 4th amendment, and Dear Leader can lock up citizens indefinately, what is their next step?
Sounds to me like a student with a view of Bush’s Landing area putting out a plea for someone to please give him a weapon. It also sounds like the Chicago, Miami,FBI Bullshit
Greetings, all-
By definition, aren’t all al-Qaeda members plotting to kill Bush?
Why would they, he’s their best enabler…
MSM saying they are “Israeli Arabs” affiliated with AQ via the internet. Okay….so..then they must know where the AQ website(s) are…?
Teddy haz new post.
http://firedoglake.com/2008/07…..t/#respond
Y’know, that’s true. George Bush has done more damage to the US than bin Laden could ever have dreamed…bin Laden, it turns out, didn’t have to terrify a nation. No, he only needed to terrify one man-Bush.
He appears to have done that most efectively.
Yep, he couldn’t have served their purposes better if he was operating out of their playbook.
Shorter Bush: “So Osama wants to destroy America. eh? Well, not if I destroy it first!”
Yep. Right there with “They hate us for our freedoms? We’ll just eliminate those pesky things!”
sorry they missed/ just kiddin
psyopps every day of the week …….sigh
They didn’t miss- they didn’t shoot- they just thought about it apparently
Seems to happen a lot – always reminds me of the movie “Minority Report.”
Oh, Bravo, Christy and Jane and all the FDL talent.
It strikes me as richly ironic that part of the takeover of our government by Corporate interests has been the strategy of muzzling the free press.
Who could’ve predicted? That in the place of traditional top down talking heads would sprout up hundreds of “Be the Media” types – some, like FDL, simply brilliant in their capacity to lead, inform, and motivate people to act.
When history is written about these days, I know that you, Jane, and you Christy, and FDL as a whole, will be part of the story of how people came together to find solutions. I think of this place as a 21st century Charter Oak Tree.
Thank you for your work and your invaluable leadership.
Congrats to the FDL for establishing a “Diary” Construct.
And why?
The majority of “liberals” in America are women, and that is in keeping with the leadership of the FDL. And this too is vitally important in order to move our public discourse forward.
And as a Chicano from the Sonoran Desert, earlier this week, I took to task, the New Yorker for their cover page. Thusly, the editors’ approach to racism was a stigma for a rank “amateur hour” on their part. Here in the Desert, no owner of a Latino, Native American, or African American news outlet would venture to do the same. Perhaps, we are not sufficiently Liberal, but we do pay the ‘price’ on a daily basis for our citizenship.
Consequently, America’s liberal dudes like to “play the game” as well “engage in the game” as long as there is not cost visited on either the bottom line or the potential cost visited on their advertisers.
In the meantime, the ACLU in Arizona has updated their legal filing by adding two additional complaints relative to a ‘crime suppression sweep’ albeit, a ’round-up of illegal immigrants’. In the first instance, a Latino couple was stopped at a roadblock, and asked for the social security card, a driver’s license, title, and insurance papers, and yet, no one else that was stopped, was asked for “the papers”. In the second incidence, a brother and sister and owner of an auto repair shop, stopped at a nearby convenience store and saw a Deputy speaking to two Latino-looking men who were handcuffed. The Deputy yelled at them to leave and threatened with them with an arrest for disorderly conduct. Upon their return to their place of business, four police cars arrived and blocked both the street and the business location. With guns raised, the police yanked the brother from his vehicle, and with face down on the hood, was handcuffed.
Of course, this will never be reported in the New Yorker, so the large and loud liberal cabal of Journalististic Brethern will circle the wagons and defend the New Yorker.
