Good evening everyone.. Hope you all enjoyed zed “punaise” 7! Found a good live performance on youtube and couldn’t resist sharing it with the Late late pupulists…)
Left this downstairs, but probably makes more sense up here:
In theory, the decision to add all these blogs to FDL was great. I was/am very happy with all these additions and I hope the Netroots continues to evolve in this direction. However, readers don’t seem to be supporting the new arrangement. So many great posts from these other FDL bloggers can be up for days, and receive a couple of comments, or none at all. And their previous audience doesn’t seem to have followed them over here by and large.
Plus, after an initial explosion onto the scene 4-5 years ago, readership has definitely plateaued at many of the biggies. FDL has made some bold and visionary moves to give a shot in the arm to site visitation, but it doesn’t seem to be doing much (looked at Sitemeter for the last 12 months).
I work in marketing and know firsthand how difficult it is to change people’s habits for the most part, so I empathize with FDL’s dilemma (can’t imagine how challenging the financial side must be for a venture like this). Could theorize all day why it’s been like this, but it is what it is.
Hopefully Jane’s got some new innovative idea to roll out tomorrow. I just found out about TRex hanging up the keyboard, perhaps for good, and hope that’s not happening here.
Of course, maybe it’s a minor tweak. Time tells all!
Dam I hate it when that happens… have you been doing the requisite maintenance on it??? If not try the FREE(Suz) onecare.live full scan … but wait until you don’t need the computer for a few hours… make sure the scan has started before you walk away..
Interesting take.. much like my own, though I haven’t put it in words. I know I wish I could watch Grit TV, but my connection speed (or browser(s) doesn’t like it.
I really like Spencer and Tboog.. but T does more tromping on the pundits and idiots really well like the old Jane, which is fun but not really my thing. Attackerman is teh awesome, imo,. he takes a little getting used to, but worth it. Much as I like Cliff.. i get enough McCain @ fdl…. can only take so much McCain.
Emptywheel is just teh Goddess… as are all the standards and some newbies on the FDL front page.
I hear you loud and clear… Been planning long term strategy with my old friends and neighbors… Preparing for a big change.. I do believe it’s coming soon… and i don’t mean from the Democrats. /s (not as soon anyway)
Gotta loosen up before i give myself an ulcer, at this rate. This is the perfect remedy from one of my favorite artists i stumbled on back in 2000, with a cute video too. :D
You guys heard about Bush’s new rule? Wants to require all health-care institutions that receive federal funds to guarantee non-discrimination against providers who refuse to provide abortions and other related services. The related services include emergency contraception for rape victims, and the really scary part is it redefines what an abortion is:
“any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.”
Notice that the terminology includes that an egg IS a human being. And some in the anti-abortion crowd argue (against the science) that birth control pills ARE abortifacients.
No need to overturn Roe with this one - contraception = abortion. If it passes, it’s all over and they didn’t have to go to SCOTUS to do it.
I have been saying for quite a while now that fear of overturning Roe is a canard - it has been dying the death of a thousand cuts.
I have also been trying to get the message out that the abortion debate is really NOT about babies - at least on the right-wing anti side. It’s about controlling women, and getting rid of all ‘liberal’ ideas and programs. That’s why once the ‘babies’ are born they don’t give a damn about them.
Yes, the vision has been incredible. Of course I have no knowledge whatsoever about the finances and always wonder how blogs do it, but “vision” usually needs money behind it to be sustainable in the long term.
Maybe Jane’s dogs are getting a/c put in their doghouses as we type from all the big FDL cash…have no idea…just something that I’ve wondered about.
Trex is taking a vacation, re-grouping, reflecting….The treehouse is still alive and well. thanks to Tex Betsy, teh Spook. burns, and Fat Charlie the Arcangel…it ain’t over til it’s over…
he kind of hit the wall and realized that for his own sanity he needed to unplug for a while, maybe longer. actually began doing real time things like getting outdoors, seeing friends, etc. plus one of his dear old cats disappeared, much to his chagrin.
Betsy (and the Spook) are tending the shop for now.
I just got through watching a rerun of Tuesday’s interview with Jane Mayer on CSPAN– I think its
Counterterrorism After September 11
New America Foundation
Jane Mayer , New Yorker Magazine
Steven C. Clemons , New America Foundation
Mayer’s book has got to be a blockbuster. It seems to establish how Cheney has staged a coup from within, taking advantage of 9/11 to hijack the national agenda, and browbeating any opposition. He must be held accountable, for the sake of our future.
But equally important is what to do about Jay Rockefeller, Nancy Pelosi, and Jane Harman, whose complicity borders on criminality. Mayer’s interview reminds us that the national context of their complicity, initially, was national paranoia about terrorism, and how resisting torture at that time would supposedly have exposed the Democrats to severe criticism for being “soft” on terrorism, “weak” on defense, etc.
I think they, too, must be held accountable. That is, the opposition party MUST be an opposition party where national values are at stake. They swore to defend the Constitution– but didn’t.
I don’t know whether they should be held “guilty” or not. But Democrats– and Americans in general– need to have a conversation about security vs. civil rights, and whether having one requires reducing the other. In other words, we MUST arm future generations of politicians with the rhetorical tools to thwart such security stampedes in the future that threaten to overwhelm our best and highest values. What the Democrats have done is earn their stereotype of being weak. And to propel us down the slippery slope that a future Hitler can use to hijack the government.
Thanks, Laura…I just tried to go to the treehouse, and all I got was the archive, which appeared to be empty…?
Finger is still recovering, slowly…tip is very sensitive so I have been keeping a metal splint on it. The funny thing is that at first I couldn’t type at all, having that one finger out of commission totally messed up my touch typing, the other fingers didn’t know what to do when I couldn’t type a key with my left ring finger…but now after some practice the little finger and middle finger have picked up those duties on their own so I can just type away, almost like normal. The adaptability of the human brain, eh?
I’m sure the finger will be fine, just needs a little time.
Yes - that is the conversation that has NOT been happening since 9/11. We are treated to Britney and AnnaNicole and equally vapid crap all day 24/7 and any actual political news is all terror all the time.
How do we initiate and actually HAVE that conversation?
In Sweden they do it all the time - the King or the Prime Minister announce the topic - they hold town-hall meetings all over the country for 6 months to a year, then there is a national referendum. What a great way to run a country.
And, I really, really want to claim a tax deduction for miscarriage. So many women have miscarriages, and I don’t think they get ‘credit’ for that. Any tax lawyers around tonight?
It is all just a way to make IT a wedge issue so they can stay in power…..this had better be stopped…. the ladies I know don’t want any one to tell them how or what they can or cannot do about THEIR body… they may to talk about things but no way no outside control of them…. Fuck Bush and the asses who voted for him…
Be careful - some dope legislator in my state introduced an egg is a person bill that would have required law enforcement agencies to ‘determine if a woman was criminally negligent’ after a miscarriage by not eating right, or drinking or whatever. Be very careful!
That Pelosi and Harman (RINO) did not meet with their cohort to discuss the illegality that they had been slapped with is their own damned fault. If they had called in their own troops to stand up against unconstitutionality then maybe this illegality would have been circumvented. They failed to live up to their own oaths. Screw ‘em.
*grin* i still need to see that movie. Never got a chance to, and i love it when the foreign movies get the animated oscars. :D You should have heard my cheers when Spirited Away took the VERY first one. Hisaishi Joe should have gotten the OST oscar for that one too. He’s soooooo underrated as a composer.
I thought Obamas recent invitation to all interested persons.. set up meetings and propose what the D party platform should be.. was one excellent idea.
But we do need a national (outside of partisan) discussion.. far to much is simply not known by far to many.
I really like these house-party ideas that Move-On and Obama and others have been having to try to push issues. The biggest problem is that they are all partisan - and invitees are pretty well self-selected to already agree with the topic of discussion.
I’d like to see a lot of them run by the League of Women Voters or some other non-partisan, very credible group like that.
The next step is that they would start seizing women’s medical records on a fishing expedition to see if they had suffered any miscarriages that needed to be “investigated”…a few years ago an attorney general in my state (who was subsequently kicked out of office by the voters) subpoenaed a bunch of women’s health clinic records, ostensibly to investigate whether there had been any child sexual abuse…he really just wanted to harass and expose women who had had abortions…
How odd. Perhaps this will get you to treehouse (still alive and kickin”).
Glad to hear you’re on the mend and can do a 2 hand typing variation! 1-hand is tedious.
Make that a leather shirt… try holding an Iguana… talk about claws… they hvae sharp hooks on the end of the claws… rips skin like is was butter… I have my share of scars on my arms… did I say we have had one for going on 14 yrs now… just over 5ft nose to tip of his tail..
Florida had tried to pass a law that would have put any pregnant woman in jail if she was positive on a drug/alcohol test any time during her pregnancy - and the tests would have been mandated as part of her prenatal care.
Fortunately that didn’t go anywhere, but it could.
I have to say my political/blogging/activist mood this week is very much like the Zero 7 song above..
Part of it is the, OK, what’s next? with no immediate answer.. I want to keep fighting!! And of course the fact we have so few real allies at the top right now, makes selcting the correct fight difficult…otherwise one is just banging their head against a wll.. I wouldn’t call it depressed, but more like a hot date across the bay and no wind in my sails to get me across…)
But equally important is what to do about Jay Rockefeller, Nancy Pelosi, and Jane Harman, whose complicity borders on criminality. Mayer’s interview reminds us that the national context of their complicity, initially, was national paranoia about terrorism, and how resisting torture at that time would supposedly have exposed the Democrats to severe criticism for being “soft” on terrorism, “weak” on defense, etc
At the end of WW II, in the case of General Yamashita, it was ruled that failure to exercise oversight responsibility to prevent war crimes is itself a war crime punishable by death, and Yamashita was executed.
Jeez! I say we counter with the idea that a sperm is a person. These folks are so deviant that they must be countered with their own spew. A million persons just washed my innards. Oh well, I wish! (Bob in HI, you wanted more meat in late, late night…….enjoying it any? s/)
I love how Iguanas match the black road with a yellow stripe in on the roads of old Mexico. At least you know when the yellow lines move it’s not the after effects of last nights mescal. *g*
Once helped a friend destroy his large house in SF, looking for a lost large iguana.. It was in the chimney.
well, it’s a twisted tale. we elected a new, D attorney general, and he reviewed the records, and dismissed a lot of the charges his predecessor had filed against the abortion providers, but found that some of them were valid (for not having an independent second medical opinion in each case, or something like that) but then he got caught up in a scandal as it seems he (married) had had an affair with a woman (married to someone else) who had worked in the previous office where he had worked as D.A. (she is claiming sexual harassment), and he got so much bad press that he resigned…the governor appointed a new guy and I’m not sure what the status of all that is at the moment…I do think the courts protected the records though, kept them confidential although when the fundy left office and went to take up his new post as a D.A. (the same job his successor as AG had held!), he took some of them with him…the whole sordid affair was a black eye for the state in my opinion. The new AG is supposed to be a straight arrow, though–a former judge.
Guess that taught him to keep the flue closed… ours has pushed his way out the front door a couple of times … once he was two yards down in her roses just hanging out and once after an hour or two of searching our neighbor at the corner was trying to corner him in the middle of the street with her bare hands…lucky I heard the commotion and came with the arm length gloves and picked him up..
I agree completely. There are so many things I am passionate about and I am worn out with all the crises going on right now I am afraid to open my email box most days. Just today I had this abortion thing, planned wolf hunts in three states where wolves were just de-listed a month or so ago, the gov’t has taken the Navy sonar testing to SCOTUS and they agreed to hear it, all the still fallout from FISA, bailing out banks instead of homeowners, KBR electrocuting 13 soldiers in the showers, Bush vetoed the Medicare bill, Court said Bush can name any US CITIZEN an enemy combatant and they can be imprisoned without trial, the latest idiocy from Gitmo (detainee told judge he needed some legal paper to file a motion, judge replied that he would have to file a motion to get the paper, detainee replied that even if he had the paper, the judge wouldn’t get the motion because as soon as he writes it it is presumptively classified and some commission has to review it first - and of course there isn’t a commission yet!), Bush putting all new solar projects on hold for two years to ’study the environmental impact’, the EPA announcing it wasn’t going to do any more work until Jan 20 (why can’t we fire the lot of them - it would save a lot of money?) and on and on. It makes me tired.
Check out the full list, it’s even more entertaining. Though I think seeing their reaction to what Bob Barr has to say to them might just be worth the price of admission.
They will claim in their own defense that the conditions of the briefing that they got was that they *may not* talk about it with anyone! Now, who set those conditions, and whether or not they had the ability to do something else is debatable. But they *could* have said, No way Jose until we check this out with others who have security clearances. They didn’t do that.
Probably in the same place as all my ‘child’ deductions. Oh oh, I’m in trouble - two ectopic pregnancies - which I ‘murdered’ in order to keep from dying myself from internal bleeding.
Could we arrange a seminar on ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ using the personal experience model to ‘enhance the discussion of what is and is not actual torture’?
The dolts that follow these liars still believe they’re defending “freedom.” There’s the joke “Freedom’s” Watch group. We’ve got to wrestle control of that word from the wingnuts, since we are the true champions of Freedom, and their daddy figures are literally taking their freedoms from them, right before their eyes.
There is one Repube that really is defending freedom. Too bad he’s got a bit of a temper:

(she is claiming sexual harassment), and he got so much bad press that he resigned…the governor appointed a new guy and I’m not sure what the status of all that is at the moment…I do think the courts protected the records though, kept them confidential although when the fundy left office and went to take up his new post as a D.A. (the same job his successor as AG had held!), he took some of them with him…the whole sordid affair was a black eye for the state in my opinion. The new AG is supposed to be a straight arrow, though–a former judge.
Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Another “Million Man March” so to speak?
Guess that taught him to keep the flue closed… ours has pushed his way out the front door a couple of times … once he was two yards down in her roses just hanging out and once after an hour or two of searching our neighbor at the corner was trying to corner him in the middle of the street with her bare hands…lucky I heard the commotion and came with the arm length gloves and picked him up..
Hmmmm. Might it not also render hysterectomy a legal crap shoot?
Heh. Ya know what George Carlin said about the American Dream…”they call it a Dream because you have to be alseep to believe it.”
Exhaling…….and smiling……………
On their list of confirmed speakers is Erick Erickson, who they describe as:
I thought FreeRepublic was the biggest, or even LGF, but RedState? That place is a ghost town.
I just love their speaker line up:
Are you fucking kidding… Ok here is your chance to pie them all in one place!!
Laura, do you like to play duets? I’ll play. ;)

Where on the 1040 form do I file for my 5 million “child” deductions?
Could we arrange a ‘rapture’ while they’re all in one place?
i bet they are just looking for any reason to claim victimhood at the hands of those nasty liberals
ya gotta get each of them a SS# first
suitcase nuke????
And Goldwater’s son is on that list. He campaigned for Ron Paul, that should be another fun one.
Probably in the same place as all my ‘child’ deductions. Oh oh, I’m in trouble - two ectopic pregnancies - which I ‘murdered’ in order to keep from dying myself from internal bleeding.
they got jack bauer attending?
Could we arrange a seminar on ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ using the personal experience model to ‘enhance the discussion of what is and is not actual torture’?
I guess I might have to give them all names, too.
Let’s see: Suzanne, nahant, Hannibal, lokywoky, Eureka Springs…
Nah…they lucky to have that inspiration.
I’m a Golden Stater!

I think you went through enough… my X had one… very nasty/painful and wasn’t fun from this side either
