Those are the words of AP’s new Washington Bureau Chief Ron Fournier about Barack Obama in March 2008. Ron, the word you were too timid to use but were thinking was "uppity".
Many of us in the blogosphere, most prominently Josh Marshall, have noticed a bizarre non-neutral reporting stance of many AP reporters, starting with Fournier and Liz "With Sprinkles" Sidoti. And now there are some items that are bringing this general wankerosity to the forefront.
Yesterday, ABC News Reported:
White House officials interviewed as part of an investigation into the misleading information given to the public and the Tillman family in the weeks after the death of Corporal Pat Tillman have said they do not recall when they first learned that Tillman was killed as a result of friendly fire, according to a proposed report released today by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
The committee set out to determine when top officials at the White House and Defense Department learned that Tillman had been killed in a friendly fire incident. Tillman, a former NFL star and perhaps the most famous soldier to die in Afghanistan, was killed on April 22, 2004. His death was widely covered by the media and Tillman was posthumously awarded a Silver Star just days after his death.
It was not until over a month later, on May 29, 2004, that the public and Tillman’s family were officially informed that his death was very likely due to friendly fire.
The committee says that in their quest to find out when officials first knew about the possibility that Tillman’s death was not due to enemy fire, they were "frustrated by a near universal lack of recall," according to the report.
But they had a lot of outside help from people ready to give them the stories they wanted to produce.
Karl Rove exchanged e-mails about Pat Tillman with Associated Press reporter Ron Fournier, under the subject line “H-E-R-O.” In response to Mr. Fournier’s e-mail, Mr. Rove asked, “How does our country continue to produce men and women like this,” to which Mr. Fournier replied, “The Lord creates men and women like this all over the world. But only the great and free countries allow them to flourish. Keep up the fight.”
Keep up the fight? With who, Ron? Certainly not with the Republicans.
Thanks for not even "buying in" there, Ron, you just went and gave it away. The "Lord" apparently saw fit to make Pat Tillman an atheist who opposed the Iraq invasion too.
After this came out, Fournier – who undoubtedly in his next piece will write about McCain’s "pragmatic resolve" — said this:
"I was an AP political reporter at the time of the 2004 e-mail exchange, and was interacting with a source, a top aide to the president, in the course of following an important and compelling story. I regret the breezy nature of the correspondence."
No you don’t. Even your lame expression of "regret" is full of puffing your own importance.
Ron Fournier encourages not "just the facts" reporting for the AP, but "opinion" and instant analysis. A news bureau of Fred Barnes level non-thinking. Or as it is known in the trade now, reporting.
Awesome Ron, just awesome.
Enjoy the barbecue…with sprinkles.

Just who was the hidden hand promoting this guy and his ilk to the highest reaches of the AP?
Is this what objective Journalism is like? Even if you support Bush, Karl Rove has lied to the press often and this AP reporter does not seem the least bit concerned.
Karl has always been quite dismissive of the Press but with such Right Wing hacks toading up to him despite all his lies who can blame him?
Badly hidden, if you dig.
These media outlets are owned by Republicans, managed by Republicans, and their staff fall right in behind the Republican party line like baby ducks.
Read this piece from Mercury Rising: The New Moonie Times. Note the references to the way the CEO of General Electric broke NBC’s news division to heel.
You would think that an Objective reporter would have gone after Rove especially after the way Rove lied to make Pat Tilman a hero, especially after lying about how pat Tilman died to HIS FAMILY.
America is Lucky to make heroes like Pat Tilman, but we also produce lying villains like Rove and the Wormtongue toads who enable them like Ron Fournier.
Ron is not a reporter he is a plant in the news room he is a Government Propaganda Agent.
So Jack Welch and his fellow right wing morons are the reason why nobody watches the news? Jack is the reason GE stock sucks and they keep talking about selling NBC? All Mainstream Media Stock has sucked for the last 5 or more years!
This despite two wars to drive news coverage, oh wait the Surge is going so well that the MSM devotes just how many minutes a week in war coverage? If you are not winning and your a big guy then you are losing.
The press knows that so they just don’t report the news. The people want to know what is going on but they know better now than to watch the MSM.
The people are hungry for war news they want a real conversation on why we have not won this war. They are ready to look for someone to blame Bush thinks he will serve us Lefty’s up on the altair to save his pride, I saw lets serve up some war contractors Like Darth’s KBR who keeps on electricuting solders but somehow they never loose their government contracts.
Maybe the AP could do a story about the Vice President making money by skimming on the troops safety government contracts to boost his profit margins. Darth will say he didn’t know but he was the CEO of KBR, Darth got KBR the government job in the first place, JUST WHO ELSE WAS SUPPOSED TO KNOW ABOUT KBR’S SHODDY WORK!
Darth should be held personally responsible for the electricuted solders deaths and be sued by their family’s.
There is a reason the GOP hates trial lawyers Because without Trial Lawyers solders lives wouldn’t cost a thing!
Trial Lawyers fighting to hold the rich accountable for their actions!
Nite Folks
Thanks, Attaturk. Well said. Thanks for the serious links.
The ethical crimes go vastly beyond the scope of the illegal ones.
Sociopaths are opportunists and turn other people’s tragedies to their own advantage. And with sociopaths or the cowards intimidated by them (who are willing to fall on their swords in fear of them, or make others fall on their swords ….) they are willing to tell incredible, whopping lies. And the bigger the lies, the more readily people believe them … at first, anyway, or the lies are too crazymaking and awesome in their size and audacity to confront without tentativeness. Facing down evil is scary stuff.
And using “I don’t recall” to hide behind…. and use as a legal and technical protection … is pathetic and the truth so deserves to be unveiled, the lying unraveled.
Truth will out.
Seems to me the soldier electrocution deaths are criminally negligent homicide. Of course, I’m not a lawyer.
Just my two sad cents,
Heather
“I do not recall.” “I have no recollection”
The “Watergate Mantras” and people still went to jail!
Good morning, pups. Well, a Bobo-free NYT was too good to last. He’s back from vacation and babbling about “The Luxurious Growth” and saying farewell to the sort of horrible social engineering projects that dominated the 20th century is a major example of human progress. Bob Herbert is on vacation, so we’re stuck with Bobo solo.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got some apple walnut muffins that just came out of the oven. We’ve got our primary today, so please keep your fingers crossed that the Democrats in GA 12 are smart enough to dump John Barrow and vote for a real Democrat.
Good Morning, Firepups!
It’s cool and clear here in central Jersey, with heat and high humidity coming from the south tomorrow.
Real reporting isn’t easy. But it does get done: look at McClatchy, which has been spot-on in its coverage of the Bush administration and the Iraq War fiasco. But too many reporters aren’t willing to do the hard work. Instead they suck up to their sources [like the puff piece about Holy Joe in yesterday’s NYT].
But now we can push back here at the ‘Lake, Media Matters, and at other places in Left Blogosphere. We can and do write letters to the editor: letters of appreciation for honest reporting, and letters of complaint for reportorial suckitude.
Keep pushing, Firepups! It does make a difference.
There’s house-blend granola, with yogurt, sliced almonds, and fresh blueberries, and a big pitcher of iced coffee. Help yourselves.
Work for peace, every day.
{{waves hello to Marion in Savannah}}
Conclusion:
‘The pervasive lack of recollection and absence of specific information makes it impossible for the Committee to assign responsibility for the misinformation in Corporal Tillman’s and Private Lynch’s cases. It is clear, however, that the Defense Department did not meet its most basic obligations in sharing accurate information with the families and with the American public.’
Sounds like Congressional hand washing of the matter! Same thing a certain Roman politician did centuries ago? No obstruction here, right?
Hi, NJP! I may take some of that iced coffee to have later at work, just to confuse folks… They understand iced tea here, the place damn near runs on it, but if you put ice in your coffee they look at you like you’ve lost your mind!
Such a simple well stated flash of the truth, TCU! Thank you.
Good Morning, Marion, good luck with Barrow. Is there a republican primary in district 12? As you know GA is a non-declare state, so is it possible some of Barrow’s supporters might vote in the republican primary?
Yep. He actually quit the AP for a while to go work for a startup run by Bush’s campaign team, one of whom up until recently was running McCain’s campaign.
He went after Edwards and Clinton hard in the beginning, but he was Obama’s best friend until it looked as if Obama was winning.
The bubbles stopped coming up from Ron Fournier a long time ago.
MSNBC is discussing the ABC/Washington Post poll which shows McCain far ahead in the Commander in Chief question. I guess that most Americans don’t know that Obama has always knows the difference between Sunni and Shia or that Obama has known for 15 years that Czechoslovakia is no longer. I did go to the poll to read the data, and I’m curious about the fact that they did not release the entire poll. Is this unusual for the Post?
Thanks for sharing this. There was enough dryness in this piece to be slyly entertaining at least …
BTW, loved the expression reportorial “suckitude”!!!
Lieberman sounds rather bemused as if everyone else moved and not he. Meanwhile.. what was it.. the three amigos… McCain and Graham and himself… such bonding costs… all of us…
Good morning. Did anyone Tivo Morning Joe this morning? There was a particularly disgusting discussion this morning on Habeas and Torture where I’d really like to have the transcript. Both Scarborough and Barnicle tried to downplay torture and actually tried to convince people that George Bush would be vindicated by history. I was so stunned by what they were saying that I couldn’t even manage to tape it.
Source is the first thing I look at before reading *any* news piece these days. If it says McClatchy, it’s an auto read. If it says AP, most often it’s a waste of time; what’s truly scary is how many pieces come from AP vs. other so-called news organizations.
I am kicking myself for listening to Joe Scarborough this morning It could just as well be Rush or Beck talking. Joe must be really feeling the pain of the R’s falling like Cooper’s Hill cheese chasers. He was ranting so furiously & interjecting Carter & Bill Clinton repeatedly that I thought he was going to have a complete meltdown. Now I am fuming & grinding my teeth. I should know better than to start out a beautiful day listening to arrogant, pigheaded Joe.
Sorry but I did no tape it. Joe and Barnicle came across as rude and refused to allow the guest, I did not catch her name, speak. There was no mention of the Geneva Convention. What an idiot!
Fournier was outed(during the whole Gannon fiasco) on some of the gay blogs I read to be a Jeff Gannon client.
I am going to try and find some of the links, but there was so serious documentation!…so nuff’said !
I’m not fuming because all he could do, is say Carter would be worse and Iraq will be dancing in the fields in ten years. Fume when he can back up is spouting with facts. He came across as totally clueless to me.
Stopped listening to them since Russerts death…..they have become bolder and more disgusting, not even bothering to disguise their bile as opinion!
this AP bullkacky goes back years about 4 …to NEDRA the PICKLERHAC
after the NewYorker called him the liberals fave……he is another grotesque POS with beady eyes…Hey Joe …wheres Laurie?
So with a lot of intellectual double-talk, Bobo is celebrating anti-intellectualism … and ever respectful to survival of the
soullessfittest?Joe is full of crap but there are people not paying attention (not hardcore wingnuts) who believe his & Barnicle’s bs lies. That makes me cranky.
I guess it wasn’t just me that thought Joe was much worse than usual this am. I really don’t watch that show often but it seemed to me a standout, shameful spectacle today. I have noticed too that the R’s are revealing their true beliefs, their inner nastiness more & more. Desperation? I actually hope they keep it up & bare it all so everyone can plainly see their “values”.
AP’s bias in particular, has been hiding in plain sight for the past 10 years.
I found myself ignoring AP and AP-derived reporting early in 2002.
sadlyyes@29:
The New Yorker actually called Joe the liberal’s favorite????
Must be a southern thing. I love iced tea. Always got some in the fridge but iced coffee, nope. Can’t stand it. Never could.
I saw an article related to that and thought, “I want some of whatever this reporter’s smokin’.”
Well my guess for their dishonest talk about torture and habeas this morning was probably due to the tape of the interrogation of Omar Khadr’s being released today (they didn’t show it but CNN and CBS did show a little bit of the tape and said more would be available later today). I guess Scarborough and Barnicle wanted to prepare their viewers to ignore the tape.
Makes you want to puke, doesn’t it. Of course the media has been on a roll lately trying to define liberals.
The other thing that really got me about their torture talk was that Joe or Barnicle tried to pretend that what Bush is doing is no worse than what the U.S. did in WWII. When I sent them my curt email this morning I included a link to this WaPo story.

Bush’s policy is closer to what our ENEMIES did.
Pat Tillman was my kind of man. He was against the Iraq invasion and was an Atheist. *hearts popping out of my chest* Of course, the Bush Regime treated him like a piece of garbage. Assholes.
Likewise. The problem is that it still is perhaps the most influential news operation, since so many other new outlets rely on AP “reporting.”
AP was the hardest operation for BigMoney to take over, since there are a lot of journalistic purists there, but Ruturd Murdoch and Sam Zell joining the AP Board recently signals the takeover is now complete. Just like NPR/PBS a few years back.
Everyday, each of us should be getting someone new to try out FDL and similar places.
‘mornin’, pups. Kudos again to Christy and Jane for the Dorgan visit. And I see we’ve another Senator guest to look forward to this morning.
Morning Joe is skewed so far right it tilts off Manhattan Island. But there are brief moments of candor. Too brief.
What’s interesting there is what is not said…kinda like what the WaPo does not publish about the polls.
The new Jane Meyer book, The Dark Side, out today should be a hot topic of conversation. Will it? Or will they still be rehashing the New Yorker cover, and oh yeah, Jesse’s not running unless God speaks to him. Sheesh.
Oh, and I’ve decided we need to push back against the framing of “the Bush brand”…it’s not a brand that will live in infamy, it’s the Bush family name and the Cheney family name. They can’t hide this personal culpability by corporatizing themselves.

sad,
and disgraceful
It’s hard to believe that msm could get any worse but it has. The msm “reporting” the news/issues is more bizarre/orwellian by the day. If I didn’t know better, I’d think they are reporting about a different country than the majority of us live in. Sorry, for a moment I forgot that most media do live their own bubble world.
When are the perpetrators, collaborators, propagandists of the corporate mainstream media going to be held accountable? They are concerned with nothing more than making profits for their corporate masters and lining their own profits. They are rewarded with celebrity and ushered into the halls of power as loyal members. They are traitors to what journalism is and traitors to American.
