In most industries when prices of the raw materials go up, the converters and re-sellers of those materials usually raise their prices somewhat but not as much as when the raw materials coast less.
The oil companies haven’t built new U.S. refineries and in fact have fewer refineries than a few years ago.
The oil companies aren’t drilling and pumping oil out of their current holdings and leases and are letting those properties sit idle.
You put this together, and look at the obscene bulging out-of-the-world profits of the oil companies, and the only conclusion you can come to in the fog of misinformation and propaganda that the oil companies are putting out, is that they are raising their prices to new heights without any fear they will be forced to rescind their profits or their prices.
By the way, it seems to me that there aren’t any U.S. oil companies anymore. The oil companies, except for those that have been nationalized, owe no allegiance to any country and pretty much exist as independent states.

I heard from a reputable source that if it weren’t for the feds policy of weakening the dollar to protect the banking system, that oil would actually be $80 a barrel now. Becaues oil is purchased in dollars and our currency is heading south, we must pay the $70 premium.

One factor that I don’t think I’ve seen talked about much is how much energy is being used directly by our military to operate in Iraq. That has to be be one of the things pushing up demand; military vehicles burn through different kinds of petrochemical fuels at exorbitant rates. I remember stories from Gulf War One and before that the Abrams Tank is such a fuel guzzler, the Army has to field a fleet of tankers to keep them running.

I do know the Air Force has looked into the crystal ball at the future, and is busy certifying all of its aircraft to run on synthetic fuel made from coal. They’re not counting on off shore drilling or Alaska - and that fact ought to be a pretty credible argument in any discussion about energy policy. They’re also equipping a number of their installations with wind turbines and instituting other ‘green’ measures. Fuel costs are a huge part of the Air Force budget. They’ve had to cut back on flying hours, RIF people, and do other things because as the biggest user of energy of all the services, they are taking a huge hit from high oil prices.

Mark

Not necessarily “the” generalized solution, but at $5.50 / gallon for diesel, have you looked at seeking to produce some of your own biodiesel — from kitchen grease or otherwise?

US dollar has already depreciated more than 30%. It used to be $.88 to the Euro. It is now $1.59 per Euro.

It is not that the Saudis are “tapped out”, far from it, the question is whether they are peaked and plateauing, with a decline in production imminent, or whether there is some path to increase oil production into the indefinite future.

On Wednesday July 9, 2008 our U.S. Constitution, specifically the 4th amendment was officially torched by the U.S. government.
