So yeah, I don’t have a lot to say about Fannie and Freddie possibly being bankrupt and everyone running around screaming "the sky is falling! The sky is falling!" Why? Because we knew, oh about 4 years ago, in 2004, that the two companies were probably technically insolvent and we knew, then, that the fact could be concealed by BS until the housing bubble collapsed (which we were also talking about 4 years ago.)
This is the way disaster works in the modern day. Some DFH says "perhaps a land war in Asia against a country that has never attacked the US and presents no threat might work out badly." Responsible people reply "You Damn Fucking Hippies. You were right about Vietnam and we’ve never, ever forgiven you. So we’re going to cut off our nose just to spite your face."
Or perhaps "Maybe if we have huge tax cuts for the rich and a 150 billion dollar war that will cause large deficits."
Or possibly "Perhaps tax cuts mean less tax revenues, not more?"
Or "Invading Iraq may cause the price of oil to rise because it’s very easy for guerillas to disrupt oil supplies."
Or "Repealing Glass-Steagall might be a bad idea". (Oh wait, Dems did this. Well both parties have "serious" people).
Or "Perhaps letting banks buy credit insurance just displaces the risk rather than covering it?"
Or "If you put interest rates to generational lows and leave them there, it might cause a housing bubble."
Or "Perhaps giving people loans they can’t afford and not checking their credit is a bad idea and might make the housing bubble worse?"
Or (2002)"Given that we’re probably on the wrong side of peak oil, perhaps the major car companies should be retooling for fuel efficient cars back in 2002 or so, and if they don’t, perhaps when oil prices go up they’ll finish going bankrupt?"
Or "Did your mothers drop all of you on your heads, then decide that wasn’t enough and give you a roundhouse kick so hard it created a perfect and permanent cranial-rectal inversion?"

You just don;t even know! Some of the ‘mortgage counselors’ in south CA (and elsewhere, I’m sure) were not even high school grads. Some were, (GASP — where’s Lou Dobbs when you need him?) illegal aliens. There was zero regulation for encouraging people to pull paper-equity out of their cheaply built homes. That they are now homeless and sqawking is their own greedy doing. The people I feel sorry for are those who followed the rules. My retirement will be less than I anticipated just because everyone else got caught up in greeeeeed. Thanks, Repukes.

I’m thinking that was the cutting edge(bleeding edge)on this whole financial mess..once they’d opened up consumer credit, then it seemed just a hope and skip to opening up mortgages. I remember when we got our first one, the bank people called our employers to make sure a) that we really did have the jobs we said we did and b) whether or not we were well thought of, etc. to make sure we’d keep those jobs. I recall feeling a little bit angry at the time, but they were checking up on the possible investment in us. I think that level of ‘vetting’ on applicants just does not exist now and has not for a while.

The very idea of giving loans (and huge ones) with no documentation was a disaster waiting to happen — but everyone seemed to look the other way as long as they were extracting huge fees from the fools who were taking out these loans. Where were the sensibles? I cut no slack to the banks and mortgage companies — they deserve to be skewered (just wish I didn’t have my retirement funds getting skewered along with them.) I tried to speak out —- but who would listen? Greed is gross!

My ex had no friends so even though we were in the middle of a divorce and I had planned to take him to the cleaners, first I took him for his colonoscopy. The results were devastating but he was a 50/50 guy and I sat with him for 8 months during treatment then he wanted to go on his way. He is who he is and I’m truly not a sucker only a person who would take care of what needs to be done. The boys are adults and they understand. I used to comment early on and now I’m back… Keith is on and talking about McCain… You really need MSNBC imo it is different.

toby-where were your kids?–you can get an email for me from my flickr page-click on my name and go to profile-yep, was raised in akron-ellet, then cincinnati then hamilton then lived all over cincinnati except for the east side, then back to hamilton then moved to se ohio 10 years ago….all of the areas are different……you only have to travel a few miles for it to change…..terrain, populace, traits, all different….is a neat state in that way. been all over it, growing up we would travel on weekends. all over. picture that, every weekend, a different part of the state. got to know it pretty well. and we went to canada, ontario.
as an adult, i worked for the phone company in cincinnati, outside, i was in homes all over the city and country, every day, learned a lot……..kinda may explain my weird opinions and views…….saw a lot. and not to mention growing up we were dragged all over. exposed to all walks of life-my parents are true methodists. as a teen had to work at a camp in kentucky that provided resources for people there. they had absolutely nuthin…i worked my ass off…..i already had known people like that existed due to my family and the way they are, but a lot of the kids with me-was a rude awakening. henderson settlement, ky. never forget it.
