Just when you think they couldn’t possibly sink any lower or be any more cavalier, they pull another one out of the gutter:
(AP) It’s not just the American dollar that’s losing value. A government agency has decided that an American life isn’t worth what it used to be.
The "value of a statistical life" is $6.9 million, the Environmental Protection Agency reckoned in May _ a drop of nearly $1 million from just five years ago.
The Associated Press discovered the change after a review of cost-benefit analyses over more than a dozen years.
Though it may seem like a harmless bureaucratic recalculation, the devaluation has real consequences.
Why yes, such calculations do make quite a difference…
When drawing up regulations, government agencies put a value on human life and then weigh the costs versus the lifesaving benefits of a proposed rule. The less a life is worth to the government, the less the need for a regulation, such as tighter restrictions on pollution.
You know of all the lies, the wars, the general a-hole behavior nothing ever summed up the Bush Administration more than the fact that after five-years they have thought up…
A million new reasons to not care!

1,700 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Attaturk and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Jest when the fascists are doin’ their self emolation in a burnin’ political waste dump, Obama and the Democrats are lookin ta snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Now when the country is comin tagether against the 25 year con-job of the corporate oligarchy, Obama wants ta move away from 60% of the voting population ta try and capture a few wingnut, religious votes…Jesus H. keeeeeeRIST on a God damned crutch, and this is the best we got??!!
Jesus is Bob Schrum back in drag in the Obama campaign?!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE GOTTA HIT ‘EM IN THE HEAD WITH A BOARD TA GET THEIR EYES OPEN!!
Good morning, pups. Ah, life is good! Bobo is still off, and Paul Krugman is flying solo. His column is titled “Kennedy’s Big Day,” and he says Wednesday was the first major health care victory that Democrats have won in a long time. And it was enormously encouraging for advocates of universal health care.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got French toast made with challah with maple syrup or honey butter. TGIF. I’m ready for the weekend. Have a great day. 193 and counting…
Good Morning, Yesterday during McCain’s press conference, he whined because Obama wanted equal pay for females and extended family leave. He said that the government was not in the business of creating laws to dictate to business what they should do. All Obama could do was provide government solutions, yada, yada, yada. The next question someone asked whether or not the government should help out the car industries. Big government bad, yada, yada, yada. Then the question turned to Fannie and Freddie and he hedged. Although he had indicated he might support government bailout earlier in the day, he did seem to recognize that he couldn’t exactly admit it so instead he just rambled. Of course as a member of the Keating Five he was okay with the S&L bailout and seems okay with bank bailouts now, but equal pay or extended family leave is big government. John McCain the rambling talk express.
Change we can believe in!
It amazes me how long you have been reading the oped’s at the NYTimes for us. Now that they have inclued Kristol, it’s has to be difficult. Thanks
I know that we will all be shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that a peer-reviewed paper in one
of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals comes to the conclusion that
the Crandall Canyon mine collapse caused the “earthquake”
and not the other around.
But what do those DFS (Dirty F*cking Seismologists) know, anyway?
Morning Attaturk,

citizen norske, i wonder if you haven’t identified the key issue here? – that we are waking up to the con-job. and that is profoundly disturbing to many (most?) of the political elite. maybe obama isn’t running for president in order to find a different way forward – maybe he’s running for president in order to redirect, and if possible, put a lid on our aspirations for fundamental change.
DEFLATION!!!
Well, amid the inflation caused by rising oil prices and the falling value of the dollar, isn’t it good to know that something is falling in price other than housing?
Need to highlight the relative value: in that period of time we have had about 15-20% inflation, no? Thus, in “real terms”, this figure is about a $2 million drop (the figure should have gone up by $1 million, rather than a drop of $1 million, simply to keep up with inflation).
And, in real terms, perhaps we should compare this to Europeans. Based on dollar-Euro conversion, again, to keep American life values steady in European terms, the amount should have gone up about 40-50% rather than fall. Thus, to stay constant (even without inflation) in Euro terms, the figure should have gone up $3-4 million, rather than falling $1 million. Yet another way that we’re falling behind Europe.
Etc …
uh oh
I sure hoep katymine’s Elmore doesn’t find out about this
Sex curse found at ancient Cyprus site: report
The invasion of the body snatchers. Not only did neocons take over the R party, they’ve also got control of the Ds.
lol. nah, just their partners in crime – the neoliberals. who are almost as dangerous in the short term and possibly more dangerous in the long term?
New (or neo) one-liner: Never trust a pol with a “neo” prefix.
1,700 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Selise:
Now I am never gunna contradict yer most prescient analitical mind but I ‘m wonderin’ if ya may not be over thinkin’ this jest a bit. Obama is a VERY smart and VERY astute student of human behavior and motivation and he has experience manipulating and facillitationg citizen action on their own behalf (and his own ,of course)…I jest think that Obama doesn’t have a very positive view of the sophistication of regular folks and their ability to identify and articulate their own interests in the face of corporate power. He is VERY ambitious and all we hafta do is convince “im that he’s underestimated us and that he can’t win without us.
After all, as I told his campaign staff, he’s gunna kill the money machine he built that enabled ‘im ta opt out of public financin’…this month’s numbers should send ‘uim a message and he’s too amrt ta think that cor[porate and telecom money will replace the funding turbin of a national grassroots movement.
KEEP THE FAITH AND KEEP THE HEAT ON…SEE YOU IN DENVER!!
The only way he’ll be convinced of that is if he loses.
You’re so welcome! For Kristol I have a Hazmat suit…
Got news for you all.
The Ds were compromised long ago.
The magic thet is George W Bush is that he lowered the bar so far that his worst predecessors look good (or at least not fscking disasterous)
The best Democratic hero, JFK got us into Vietnam (for all the wrong reasons)
Obama does not walk on water, nor is he an empty suit.
He is a politician, from start to finish.
He is also the viable option this year.
The republicans took over 20 years to set up the past 8.
My best hope is that my 8 year old daughter will have the opportunity to see it the last limbs torn from the hydra. My worst fear is that sh won’t.
you know the world as we know it is coming to an end when the NYTimes provides wingnut welfare.
China We Can Believe In!
citizen norske! please go ahead and contradict me as much as you like. that’s one the reasons for throwing ideas out here – to have them challenged by smart allies.
i do agree about obama’s ambitions – but i don’t see how we can convince him he can’t win without us. maybe because i disagree that he still needs grassroots money. although i do think he still needs the energy of the people for gotv and getting his “message” out. but it seems that hasn’t much changed.
was just reading some lessig this morning – a very, very smart and creative guy… who i used to have a ton of respect for. he has gone completely bonkers defending the indefensible – sounding more like an obamabot (i don’t think i’ve ever used that term before) at daily kos than the independent thinker i thought he waw. although his superior vocabulary and phraseology is intact, it’s like reading someone else.
maybe i am over the top this morning. reading lessig and thinking about Samuel P. Huntington’s essay in The Crisis of Democracy: On the Governability of Democracies (1976) was not a good way to start the day.
p.s. has anyone else here read this old essay of huntington’s?
shorter eCAHN:
New (or neo) one-liner:Never trust a polwith a “neo” prefix. The Republicans have destroyed are country. They preach guns and religion and I for one am bitter. Obama losing is not an option that I’m comfortable with.
Probably not in our lifetime.
Good morning everyone! *eating some of Marion’s French toast* ;-)
I had to laugh yesterday when Marsha Blackburn was on MSNBC taking questions from Andrea Mitchell. Mitchell brought up Gramm’s comments and Marsha being Marsha (snotty & acting like, “I can’t believe you asked me that question! Everyone already knows the answer!!!!”) said that John McCain speaks for himself and Gramm does not speak for McCain.
Huh. That’s funny, but yet, it was the right wingers who said everything Rev. Wright has ever uttered was everything Obama stood for and speaks for.
Oh the hypocrisy of it all!
And yes, just in case you were wondering….Marsha did have that far off blank stare as most female neocons do while talking yesterday.
thanks for that, I love to hate her
She drives me bats
Just for the record…
http://blogs.abcnews.com/polit…..vania.html
Johnny McTeleprompter can’t even remember his time as a POW! I think we’re going to be fine with Barack Obama. See? ;-)
McCain can’t think for himself, that’s why he always has his sidekicks, Lieberman and Graham, available to whisper sweet nothings in his ear.
the discussion on the effect of war on the Afghanis is up on CSPAN now
Which he will.
Just list his negatives vs. positives and you see he’s a very weak candidate. John Kerry was a much stronger one and he lost.
Until Democrats actually stand for something they will not be able to gain enough support to govern. The citizenry just doan like folks who are just running to get elected.
Rethugs, although they are doing essentially the same thing, always present themselves as running to do something for the people. They are usually lying but when compared to the typical Dem….
They win.
I love to hate her too. Whenever I see that woman approaching the podium on the floor of the House I look…for it. What is the “for it”? After she’s done shaking her finger at everyone for not understanding what she thinks everyone knows & believes and is pissed off because she has to explain it again (*sigh* poor reich winger *rolling eyes*), she flicks her hair around and then leaves the podium! Yes, after stomping her feet as she talks, she then like a spoiled rotten asshole….flicks her hair!
What the hell.
Good gawd that woman makes me want to kick my television.
now there’s a whiner
I don’t know if you’re seeing, but is Lindsay Graham getting creepier by the day? Wow. I was watching him yesterday. He was standing behind McTeleprompter and the whole time he stared at the ceiling & rubbing his chin! What the hell!!!
Maybe McTeleprompter’s campaign is a cult? I’m starting to think so.
Okay, going to work. Have a great day everyone! ;-)
She IS the whiner for sure!
Plus, he has his
trollop, er,c**t, er, wife to jab him in the back when he makes a “joke.”Good Morning Attaturk,
Time for refueling the spirit among the finest of American patriots.
My thoughts this fine morning run along the line of why do the Republicans hate American troops?
If a soldier is worth $ 6.9 Mil X 4000+ that would = 27 billion ,chump change in a three trillion dollar war.
So while we send them to die in some God forsaken desert and pay a ,big deal, $ 100,000. death benefit we are ripping each soldier’s family off to the tune of $ 6.8 Mil . Which scum contractor is pocketing the change?
Scarecrow is upstairs with a new post…
She’s like that cuz Shrub never asked her for a blowjob.
Jefferson identified corporations as a key issue and threat to liberty. Norske is only affirming that which we all are all effectied by but fail to speak of honestly! Like drunks………….
Eh. meh. gawd.
You mean I’ve been marked down?
#38 tjbs; $100,000 death benefit? I thought that it was about $8500.00! Anyone?
I think it started out at an embarrassing $12,000.00 at the start of the war and my little senator Ricky S.( PA) helped raise it. As always I could be dead wrong.
