Rarely has a less charismatic man run for President than Phil Gramm. From my home state of Iowa, I observed the sheer animal magnetism that was Phil Gramm. He seemingly lived full-time at the Sam’s Club just off I-235 in West Des Moines, dining on free samples in late 1995. Sadly, he was edged out in the hearts of Iowans by the more lovable personality that is Bob Dole, all despite Gramm’s last minute campaign tactic of referring to Dole in the 1st person oh the inanity!
The people of America failing to see him as the Harlequin Romance figure he thought he had become, Phil retired from the Senate in 2002, determined to enrich himself at the expense of average Americans everywhere. And boy did he.
Going to work as a highly compensated "Vice Chairman" of UBS he lobbied Congress about the U.S. mortgage crisis where he pressured his old buddies to bypass and overrule state laws that sought to stem predatory tactics used by lenders and brokers to place homeowners in high-cost mortgages. Like UBS provided.
When not helping screw over average people, Gramm helped create McCain’s March 26, 2008 policy speech on the mortgage crisis. In fact, since the Summer of 2007, Gramm has been McCain’s most prominent and important economic adviser.
At a recent meeting with the Wall Street Journal editorial board, Republican presidential candidate John McCain admitted he "doesn’t really understand economics" and then pointed to his adviser and former Senate colleague, Phil Gramm – whom he had brought with him to the meeting – as the expert he turns to on the subject
Well, the man McCain turns to just said this about the slumping and wheezing American economy:
"You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession," he said, noting that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices. "We may have a recession; we haven’t had one yet."
"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said.
Yes, the economy is down because we’re all whiners…not winners like Phil Gramm.
And when Phil Gramm’s policies led to you losing your home…well, you’re a whiner.
When you return from your latest tour in Iraq and you find your house is gone…you’re not a hero anymore, you’re just another whiner.
Yes, Phil Gramm, truly an American hero.
And if you’re wondering why this gets no attention — while the media still brings up Reverend Wright — you’re a whiner.
Maybe McCain and Gramm can get Jeff Foxworthy to put together a list for them?

Along with his Enron board of directors wife, Gramm’s main partner in this was Alaska Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens was chair of the committee that ramrodded through the Enron Exemption in December 2000. The deal Ted and Phil brokered that late night in the Senate has cost the American people hundreds of billions in added fuel costs.
Thanks, Phil Gramm. Thanks, St. Ted!
How much of McCain’s public financing is going to tank up his wife’s private jet?
There may be more Alaska news about Sen. Stevens any hour now…

Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Cohen and Kristof this morning. La Collins wrote about “The Audacity of Listening,” and says if you look at the political fights Barack Obama’s picked throughout his political career, the main theme is not any ideology. It’s that he hates stupidity. Mr. Cohen’s column is titled “The Mother of Friendships Lost,” and he states Barack Obama needs Tony Lake and Richard Holbrooke to forge his “team of rivals.” The huge challenges of American foreign policy demand no less. Mr. Kristof wrote about “The Pain of the G-8’s Big Shrug,” and says the G-8’s collective shrug about the Darfur genocide — because the victims are black, impoverished and hidden from television cameras — will be a lingering stain.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got bagels and cream cheese today. Looking at the picture at the top of the thread I can see why McSame wants to have Phil Gramm around — Gramm may be the only person on the face of the earth with less charisma than McSame. Have a great day.
Good Morning Everyone. It seems to me that McCain is like Bush. He doesn’t have enough knowledge of his own and thus parrots whatever his advisors tell him. And, of course, there is no balance in what he is being told. Deja vu all over again.
Did you all get your email from FDL? Sign on to the ACLU fight against the new FISA bill. Your name will appear in the ad. Hopefully 10,000 names. Must be very small print. But I’ll save the ad to show the grandchildren that I don’t yet have.
Mornin’, pups -
A bit o/t but one of the best pieces of snark recently (if it weren’t so bloody true) comes from a commenter at Big Orange -
By the time the elections roll around, the only people supporting bush will be democrats in the House and Senate.
DING!
Oh, lawdy, spare me!!! I opened the Savannah Daily Disappointment today and, to my horror and dismay, I noted that we have something extruded by the Doughy Pantload on the op ed page. And there are still letters to the editor wailing about how the paper is a liberal rag…
Stupid is bone deep. :-(
Anyone watching ‘morning, Joe’? Admittedly, I’m not watching every second but all I’ve seen them talk about is Obama. Do they know McCain is running and saying the most ridiculous things?
The thing that makes it even more surprising is that Savannah/Chatham County is actually more “liberal” than most of the state. Looking at election results Chatham Co. went for Gore and Kerry, and we elected (much to my chagrin) John Barrow who has a “D” after his name. Go figure…
Oh, turn off Morning Joe and turn on the Nice Polite Republicans who had a piece on all about a group of Latinas For McCain and how enthused they were about McSame and how they were planning to get Latinas to vote for him by telling them that Obama had stolen their dream of a Hillary presidency…
Because teh stupid is more vocal? Because the person who selects LTTE at the Disappointment is a rabid republic?
Wrt to scar, I’ve reached the point of not even being able to monitor for seconds at a time….gag reflex is getting razor touchy. :-(
My local TP was bought by murdoch some time back and so I only see it when waiting in line at the grocery store. Even before it became part of the great propaganda machine it’s best use was as a fish wrapper.
solai@8 Yep I sent it and sent to friends to sign as well. It is fucking unbelievable that this is happening. My spouse pointed out that the only difference it has made, winning both Houses, is that it took a year to pass instead of a week.
The Daily Disappointment serves very well under the litter boxes too.
And now the dems are about to cave on off-shore drilling. Support for alternate energy sources is about to expire (without a major PR campaign by the Dems highlighting that travesty) but they’ll lease land off the Florida coast. Go figure.
Jeeze how are they going to deal with the Chinese who are drilling off the coast of Florida as well.

That is why we get so many unplanned pregnancies too.
I love the term ’self regulation’. It sounds better than ‘there are no rules’.
I was going to add my name but that seemed to involve signing up for ACLU emails. Didn’t like the tie in, so I didn’t.
And decidedly better than “fuck the consumer!”
ACLU emails are very informative but you can always unsubscribe. Donating to the ACLU is one way to help fight the fascists.
It’s easy to see why one would be reluctant to associated with a well known group of left wing Radicals such as the ACLU. Of course, you might have unchecked that box at the bottom, that subscribed you to future correspondence form them. Myself, I actually donate to them and participate in all of their far-fetched Constitutional supporting rabble rousing.
CNN reported this morning that MS Congressman will hold hearings into the egregious [sorry, eg!] waste and misdirection of supplies meant for Katrina victims. Only one Mississippi official would respond, saying [paraphrased], yeah we knew they needed stuff, but we didn’t know they needed this stuff and that they really, really, really needed it….what us, be ethical and competent?
Sounding just like the creeps making the toxic trailers–wah, wah, wah, we couldn’t he’p ourselves….why didn’t you stop us? It’s all your fault.
[Which will probably be BushCo’s universal response to any investigation…]
No mention made of hearings in the oversight committee on the Senate side. Oh, yeah. Senator L’il Joe has “other priorities”…like smearing Obama.
L’il Joe’s pretty Pa. Thet. Ick., too. So why is CNN talking about Jesse Jackson, and not Lousy Joe?
[Updated] Fresh Prairie: Fahn Miz’ippi Trailers
which will p’off the Floridians–it’s all that Democrat congress’ fault–into voting for no-show McCain. AWOL since April.
That’s the same topic Sean Idiot has. I guess since there is nothing notable about Mc., he repeats in distorted fashion his every thought about Obama. But it is all so mean; such a sad state on what politics has become.
I am pretty sure that I am every damn list there is. I burned my draft card, spent a night in jail after being chased by nixon’s dogs, spent another night in jail protesting the nuke plant at Seabrook and I subscribe to every “left wing” publication I can find and I have never missed a chance at pissing off the jackbooted blackshirts. And when the revolution comes, as I am sure it will, I will be on the streets if I am still around by then.
Used to belong to the ACLU. Filed a brief once on behalf of Black Panthers. (lost) Then it was disclosed they cooperated with J E Hoover in WWII. Ancient history I guess, but if we have to depend on them to protect our liberties, we are fairly far gone. Take the connection between signing the ad and joining their list. It would have taken nothing to have two boxes to check, but they chose to have one. That’s exactly the attitude I object to.
Good morning.
Recently Rep. Robert Wexler visited Firedoglake to talk about his new book, Firebreathing Liberal. During the course of the discussion several people raised their concern over authorizing the president to conduct what would be a blockade of Iran. I noticed this morning that Rep. Wexler has advocated that the blockade language be removed and Rep. Franks has vowed to vote against the resolution. While I know our group was not the only group who raised this issue I know that they were a part of getting Wexler to ask for this change.
After our defeat on FISA yesterday I thought everyone could use some good news about our efforts on this issue. We don’t always win but at least some are listening to the voters.

did you see this from Attackerman?
new thread
Love to see it, but the nannyware here has blocked that as “tasteless or obscene.” Somebody must have used one or more of The 7 Words…
Any speculation as to whom the McSame is going to selected as second-in-command of the Titanic? How many bets on Dick Cheney again? There isn’t a candidate in hell that can swing a state for him except maybe Lieberman in FL, so why not another four years of the little dick?
I disagree with characterizing the ACLU as left wing radicals.
Protecting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is the mission of the ACLU and of huge interest to a wide spectrum of Americans of all political labels.
A look at the complete list of cases that the ACLU is working on, or their positions on issues, turn up things that someone is going to disagree with. For example, there has been strong internal debate on gun control in the ACLU for a very long time now.
But that’s the point: we not only need to protect the rights that we use, but also the ones that others use, especially those we might not agree with.
Any other response divides us again, in all the well known ways…
Hmmm, so McBush’s brain sez this whole recession thing is in my head. Obviously I must be hallucinating this “out of work for three months w/no prospects in sight” & the $4/gallon gasoline that is keeping me at the house.
Anyone remember “Grammstanding” – the art of taking credit for legislation you opposed? Lots of folks do it today but it all started somewhere…
