Now here’s some exciting news:
"Couch Patrol" Launches Monday
Operation Virtual Vigilance Ready to GoAfter a delay to allow correction of technical difficulties having to do with camera scheduling , a system of border cameras controlled over the Internet that Fox News labeled the "couch patrol" last April, will begin full-scale operation this Monday, July 8, according to American Border Patrol.
Originally conceived by ABP in September of 2005, the border camera system, now called Operation Virtual Vigilance, can be controlled over the Internet, including pan-and-tilt and camera controls (zoom, etc.). At present ABP operates two systems, both on its ranch in Southeastern Arizona. One camera is stationary and the other, with its solar power, can be moved from place to place. More systems are to be added to the network in the near future.
Color and thermal cameras are used.
And when they’re not busy watching the border — or maybe when the endless monotony of the uninterrupted desert landscape gets to be too fucking boring to watch (which will be after about 10 minutes at most) — hey, they can play that shooter video game where you pick off the Mexican border crossers.
Actually, this probably is good news. These people will represent one hell of lot less danger both to themselves as well as other people by just staying on their couches. Really.

ZOMG!! Order the Cheetos for Jonah & co!!! They have to be getting wood over this!
I thought those guys in the photo may have sighted DiFi.
Are the Couch Patrollers aware that many years of Republic governmental control resulted in the borders they now fell they have to watch? I would guess not and that they will happily vote for Grandpa. He’s such an angry man that’s gotta make us safe.
Just chatting with my neo-con twin brother. He is irate that almost half of America does NOT want to buildThe Wall. My thought: If business were held accountable and illegals were not employed, they would stop coming — until we developed some system to account for who is in the country legally. As long as people can work, they’ll come. We need workers…..why does our government continue to fail us over and over and over again. Tear down that wall and just do right.
You could point out to your brother that the Great Wall failed to protect China and Maginoy line failed to protect France.
Maginoy line should be Maginot line…no excuses just bad typing
Calling themselves “Operation Virtual Vigilance” will make them feel much more manly than “Operation Couch
PotatoPatrol”, I’m sure.I wonder if their Mom will let them snack on cheetos while they’re patrolling.
So if we’ve got the wall- and it don’t stop shit- then what’s plan B for the minuteman lunatic fringe?
Circle jerk.
“Wall Wall WALL WALL- give me a W- give me an A give me an L- give me another L – what does that spell? What does that spell? WALL- give me a WALL”
Whoops- they’re gettin through
“Give me ANOTHER Wall”

GW Meets with Frau Merkel in an early session…they agree to work together- for the 20 minutes left in Clusterfuck’s regime.
Actually, I think you’re still focusing too much on the enforcement side. Consider the example of Eastern Europe.
When the Cold War ended, there were dire predictions that Western Europe would be flooded with immigrants from economically backward Eastern Europe looking for work and depressing wages. Western European governments invested heavily in economic development in the East so that people could have jobs without leaving home (which is what most of them really wanted), and lo and behold, no flood of immigrants.
The real solution to our “immigrant problem” is effective economic development in Mexico. (And by “effective,” I mean real jobs with decent pay and working conditions, not American companies exploiting workers and shipping the profits back here.) If people in Mexico could get decent jobs at home, they wouldn’t risk life and limb to work here illegally (though a smaller number would still want to come here legally, just like immigrants from other parts of the world do.) He may not like the idea of spending some of our tax money on Mexico, and yes, some of it is going to be wasted, but it’s better to put up with that for a while and actually solve this than to waste money forever on ever-escalating border enforcement.
The reason we continue to have this “problem” is that the party he supports relies on voting support from people like him, who can be convinced that illegal immigrants are some kind of big threat, and money and control from big business owners who want illegal workers so they can save money on “labor costs.” While the employers may deserve to be punished, any enforcement Republicans do is going to be targeted at workers to make them more fearful and less likely to complain.
You’d have to pour trillions into Mexico to make it more attractive to stay there than to come here. Can’t see it working.
As a Chicano from the Sonoran Desert, every time that I see these photographs such as the one posted to start this thread, reminds of reality. To wit, most of these guys are White dudes, are indeed bald headed, well over fifty years of age, and carry the beer belly with the help of a belt and suspenders. And if they could run the 100 yard dash in under one minute, they would suffer a heart attack. However, I always urge these guys to continue to contribute to the various minuteman funds, knowing that their leaders will never accurately account for the monies received.
Thusly, I continue to chuckle at their heartburning concern for America and its “victimhood”. Obviously, they missed out on all the fun back in the early sixties and seventies, when the military draft was all the rage. Perhaps, the stand-up comic George Lopez is correct whence he commented that one should “always remember yourself as a kid”. If so, then the notional for playing cowboys and indians, has yet to remove itself from Cultural Americana and the grandkids are repeating the behavior of their elders. Maybe it runs in the family? So much for Progress, don’tcha think?

This is the sort of ‘vision’ America must pursue, worldwide, the effort alone, would reap great benefit.
Or, we can continue with our ‘very successful’ current policies.
Good on ya!
Keep on keepin’ on, don’t let the nay-sayers overwhelm you, Redshift.

Shit! Damn!! RedSHIFT!!!
Does watching Season 3 of 24 count?
I think that the “freudian slip” of both Obama and Clinton, when they agreed to open up NAFTA, was correct, albeit, they forgot “why”. Take, for example, should NAFTA be opened up, and “card check” were to be installed or inserted in a “new” NAFTA, the immigrant flow would be reduced substantially, if one is willing to recognize that unions in Mexico are “owned” by the federal government. And utilizing the union model from here in the United States and utilized effectively in Mexico, would turn Mexico’s economy around. Thusly, paying particular attention to Clinton as she returns to the Senate, will become an interesting politician to watch, as I have historically pegged her as a Neo-liberal, so, card check in any international trade agreement will die a certain death, and logically, Obama won’t be far behind in burying card check.

I wonder how many of these guys think there was nothing in the Southwest before their ancestors arrived?
– of course, that was maybe fifty years ago, for these, but you’d be surprised how many people think history only starts when the US makes a state out of some area, as opposed to, say, the Atlantic coast, where it goes back like, forever, all the way to the Pilgims and Jamestown. (a little snark there, but some people really do think history only starts when European-ancestry people show up.)
Howie’s upstairs
Neoliberal she is.
As, I suspect, Obama will prove to be as well.
In the age of the Divine Right of Money, such a ‘distinction’ is a requirement for all of the ‘players’.
She’s da chit, huh????
seeee????
It COULD HAVE BEEN complementary.
LOL!
Well, you know what shitizenship entails these days, doncha?
;~D
Great to have your insights, jaango!
Yeah, after I wrote that, I was thinking that the most important factor other than investment (and one of the biggest differences from Eastern Europe) would be decent labor laws, but until we can get those here, I don’t have great hope we can get our government to encourage them elsewhere.
But I’d still put that in the category of “won’t happen politically” rather than “can’t work economically.” Even so, I’d rather be outflanking with ideas that could actually work if they were implemented rather than having a rearguard argument on their terms between options that aren’t going to work.
What? There was nothing here until we “discovered” it. /snark
Redshift,
Success in America is determined by employment, access to capital, and a generous and appropriate credit line.
The same can be accomplished in Mexico, but Mexico is still a “cash and carry” economy. And until we recognize this reality, we will not be helping the people in Mexico, but we will continue to support and supplant America’s oligarchy operating in Mexico. To wit, the Oligarchy in Mexico is not Mexico’s but America’s.

Very good points. I think I’ve got the general direction right, but I agree I ought to learn more about what kinds of development are necessary if I’m going to talk about this much.
Gotta go, but it was great “meeting” you, and I hope to talk to you around here again soon!
Maybe if they are mesmerized on their couch waiting to snag an illegal, they will forget to vote. That would be swell!
Ha Ha!
While the gops are looking south, McCain’s ass is getting kicked in the hood.
Obama leads McCain 60 percent to 23 percent among Latino voters, according to a Latino Decisions Poll. The survey result is similar to that of a Gallup poll earlier this month that showed Obama leading McCain 62 percent to 29 percent.
Adios Seenior McCain!
Exactly.
Every point right on target. Give this guy an Op Ed at the Wa Po!
Yep, an’ the Op Ed of the SF Chronicle today was wall-to-wall:
‘Obama the Flip-flopinest’ by Patrick Buchanana….Man I am sooooooo damn glad we got’s a candidate whom the tired, past-it likes of Buchanan can write slashing to the bone effective OpEd’s just hammering Obama. Great….
‘Obama the guy who just wants to get elected’ another Op Ed on the same page. ‘Obama tries to ‘Clarify his position on withdrawal from Iraq…’. There was much mention of the Rev. Wright, ‘under the bus…’ and many other phrases heard at this very site. This in that hot-bed of the ‘liberal left’ home of Miss Nancy and other ‘lefties’ in that town’s paper of record.
And yeah, I know the Chronicle sucks far better than most here. Doesn’t change my point which I’m trying to get over with some sarcasm for those who might miss it.
I remain relieved that ‘we’ selected a candidate of such a solid resume that there is nothing to worry about.
