Yesterday, the sovereign nation of Iraq’s Exxonmobilshellistan’s Prime Minister publicly called for a timeline with hard dates for the withdrawal of US troops. This sent the Pentagon and State Department scrambling around issuing ham-handed, contradictory rebuttals.
In response, the Iraqis are not backing down — and kicking it up a notch.
Iraq on Tuesday said it will reject any security pact with the United States unless it sets a date for the pullout of US-led foreign troops, a proposal turned down by US President George W. Bush.
The controversial demand for a timetable from Baghdad’s Shiite-led government underlines Iraq’s new hardened stand in complex negotiations aimed at striking a security deal with Washington.
"We will not accept any memorandum of understanding if it does not give a specific date for a complete withdrawal of foreign troops," Muwaffaq al-Rubaie, Iraq’s national security advisor, told reporters in the holy city of Najaf.
Clearly, Iraq’s prime minister and national security advisor haven’t been to Iraq in a long time, because if they had, they’d see how awesome the occupation is and how we need to stay until McSame says so.
"We will withdraw, but … the victory we have achieved so far is fragile and (the redeployment) has to be dictated by events and on the ground," McCain said in an interview with MSNBC.
The elected government of the country you’re occupying telling you to get the hell out strikes me as a rather significant event on the ground. McSame seemed to grasp this in 2004.

Watch McSame backpedal on this one.
I suspect Afghanistan would say the same except she doesn’t have any oil. She still “needs” US. Sad day in America when no one wants our “help” except the poorest of the poor. The strings have turned into rope.
BTW, the “sweet” oil deals really aren’t that sweet after all. They are service agreements not a percentage of the royalties. It’s like hiring a temp instead of a CEO. (And probably the reason that “conditions on the ground” don’t favor a speedy exit for US troops.)
I guess that teh awesome foreign policy of the 1600 Crew will prevail. The CIA has much experience in replacing recalcitrant leaders overseas, perhaps there is someone there who could drop a nag’s head in his bed one night.
After all, as long as there is Awesome War, CheneyBurton and all the other contractors get richer and richer. The military-industrial complex gets stronger and the War on Terra™ is still available as a cudgel to drive the low-information voters to the polls.
Not to mention, a withdrawal on the watch of Preznit Abominable Failure will be the most visible and eternally remembered failure of his entire miserable, misspent worthless life. His legacy will be evacuation helicopters over the Green Zone… no more, no less.
Well apparently the Iraqis don’t mean “timetable” when they say “timetable”.
Their proposal is that once military control of all provinces have been handed over to Iraq, then the US will leave the cities. At that time, negotiations will begin on total removal of US forces. They are calling this a “timetable” although no dates are connected with anything in order to win the provincial elections…
Yes Virginia, Iraqi politicians bullshit too!
This will upset Dear Leader, who all along has wanted more gratitude from the Irakis for America’s liberation of their, um, oil — or something.
provided no details. But “Ali al-Adeeb, a Shiite lawmaker and a prominent official in the prime minister’s party, told The Associated Press that Iraq was linking the timetable proposal to the ongoing handover of various provinces to Iraqi control.
The Iraqi proposal stipulates that, once Iraqi forces have resumed security responsibility in all 18 of Iraq’s provinces, U.S.-led forces would then withdraw from all cities in the country.
After that, the country’s security situation would be reviewed every six months, for three to five years, to decide when U.S.-led troops would pull out entirely, al-Adeeb said.
So far, the United States has handed control of nine of 18 provinces to Iraqi officials.
The proposal, as outlined by al-Adeeb, is phrased in a way that would allow Iraqi officials to tell the Iraqi public that it includes a specific timetable and dates for a U.S. withdrawal.
However, it also would provide the United States some flexibility on timing because the dates of the provincial handovers are not set.”

There will be no need to backpedal because there’s no one to ask him. The MSM is hot on the scent of anything and everything that might destroy Obama. There’s just no time for McCain.
Actually McBush seems to be getting a fair amount of press lately—for running a totally fucked up campaign.
But there’s time for barbeque!
After Iraq pays a few ‘tributes’ to the Bush family, he’ll feel better about things.
The Iraqis must present W. and H.W. with the heads of 100 militants and 100 pounds of gold.
That was Maverick McCain. He’s inculcated that personality in the minds of his “base,” so he doesn’t have to go back to it.
I see where the NY Times took him to task for his sorry economic program, but that just gives him a chance to rail against the “liberal media.”
Iraqi people about ta get “bushed” by their government..welcome to the club Iraqis.
Sort of like how lawsuits over Telecom Immunity were about enriching the ever-hated “trial lawyers” instead of you know getting to the truth of matter?
Yes, the SCLM in America. Doing whatever it takes to blur an issue with Man-love for McCain.
They will probably hire Jeb and Neil to some big consulting contracts. Jeb still might be placed into the VP spot, but only if McCain starts looking like more of a winner.
The current wisdom is that McBush had months of running alone in which to establish his message and paing Obama as a radical- and that he did nothing at all during that time. Reports are that he can’t speak his way out of a brown paper bag and that he is inept at managing the people in his own campaign. Sounds like pretty damaging reporting to me.
In the meantime, Obama is described as having “won the center”.
No way is Jeb gonna be on the ticket.
McCain sounds like Bush without expert handlers!
I did see that about McBush. I kinda figured Obama was trying to get some better press – best way for a Dem to do that is trash the base.
Now we hear reports that there are several “factions” within the McBush campaign and that they are tearing one another limb from limb- and that McBush doesn’t know how to stop it….Helpless old man fifty fathoms over his head.
Jeb! on the ticket only happens in one of two scenarios: McVain is a sure thing to win or lose. If he’s competitive at all, it’s na ga ha pen.
Sometimes when McBush is speaking- you can hear the gears grinding againt one another- and he sorta- well- stops.
Here is an assertion, presented as a statement of fact, from msnbc’s coverage:
I think he’d only be on it if it is sure to ‘win’ (in the Bush sense of the word). McCain doesn’t seem like he’ll last for a full term and that would be great for Jeb.
Yeah- we don’t DO that.
One thing that needs to be remembered is that McVain was like his man-crush, Preznit Low I. Que an academic bottom-feeder at the Naval Academy. He got where he did because Daddy was an Admiral, Grand-daddy was an Admiral and he was the ultimate “legacy”.
Well, we’ve seen what happens when Legacy’s rule our world, and we’re certainly not better off for it.
Just because he flew jets, didn’t make him smart. Just look at our current Preznit. Two peas from different pods?
One would pray that the name “Bush” would radiate lethal levels of radioactivity for at least 2 generations…
Yes, I think we get so consumed by Washington based narratives that we forget that Iraqi politicians do things almost entirely for purely domestic political reasons.
They are similar in many ways, but McCain really served and paid a huge price for that.
I don’t know if I’d compare being on an aircraft carrier in a warzone with flying around Texas in an obsolete fighter.
So, would it be too much to hope that W and al Maliki keep vetoing each other’s plans all the way through December when our UN authorization expires? Don’t we have to get out then if there is no new agreement? What atrocity will Cheney cause to happen to prevent our leaving under those circumstances?
There is no evidence that McBush has ever lacked courage—while there is some evidence that our dear leader became deathly afraid of flying even without combat to distract him and got himself grounded.
He’s afraid of horses…
can’t speak his way out of a brown paper bag and that he is inept at managing the people in his own campaign. Sounds like pretty damaging reporting to me.
Was I dreaming or did I hear that McLame also hired Ghoulyani’s “campaign” manager?
Since the Ghoul never actually got around to running a “campaign”, I’m wondering what experience and wisdom he brings to the table.
Take three months off?
Some are sayin that McBush just took three months off- so maybe he’s been following RooDee’s lead.

Is Maliki is putting on a show of driving a hard bargain with us?
being a colonial viceroy has its limitations, I suspect
Looks that way- and of course Clusterfuck can’t say “Hell he’s just pretending about that shit for political reasons”- so the game goes on.
Miss Iraq must be wore out after a five year rape.
Hmm, maybe. But the clumsy response of the Pentagon and State lead me believe they didn’t know it was coming.
Turns out that Clusterfuck’s been allowing american companies to sell arms to Iran…
Go figure.
WHAT there’s something the bushies won’t do? Well that is just shocking.
Jamie Dimon, CEO of CitiBank, was just on CNBC jive talking the investment world in to supporting the power grab by Bernanke’s Federal Reserve Banking System before Congress this week.
Like Bernanke has done such an outstanding job at the FED; like the U.S. government should be paying interest on monies it borrows from itself; like all of this makes sense.
The FED is out of control. This nest of crooks and traitors, run by greedy private bankers, needs and expects the U.S. taxpayer to bail them out come the Depression of 2009.
Say NO to the power grab. Do away with the FED. Take back control of our money supply.
As are we after a 7 plus year one. Two terms of BushCo has brought this country to its knees (fill in the rest).
AP) The value of U.S. exports to Iran grew more than tenfold during President Bush’s years in office even as he pressed for tougher international limits on trade and accused Iran of nuclear ambitions and helping terrorists.
Records show that at least $148,000 of weapons and other unspecified military gear has been sent to Iran.
We’re not Maliki’s audience.

New meme: Liberal media = the truth. Your choice.
Yep, I stand corrected
Lest there be any doubt, the meme is targeted at We the People, not MayDaze.
How exactly do you “turn down” a rejection? (Republicans never were ones to believe in “no means no”…)
There was no doubt, but thanks for the clarification anyway. ;)
If the UN mandate expires with no agreement, then our presence there becomes illegal. That would mean we’d have to get out only if we had an administration that followed the law.
I suspect it’ll be an interesting dynamic as the election approaches. The approaching end of the administration will make the Bushies increasingly hysterical in their attempts to get their policies set in stone, while simultaneously providing more leverage to the Iraqis. If only there was a government that actually represented Iraq instead of a puppet full of corrupt cronies, something good might come of it.
Trying to ‘digg’ this but ‘connection timed out’ keeps repeating.
Clearly the Iraq prime minister is just a tool of the ‘liberal left wing media’. he he he!
Wow, it’s great to see some familiar faces in this thread, which I am now taking OT:

Maliki is clearly not yet getting the memo on sovereignty.
Bush definition of sovereignty: “Do what we tell you to do. when we tetll you to do it and then claim that this was what you wanted to do anyway.” Brilliant, except Maliki clearly did not get the memo. He better watch out or he will be gone so fast (for someone that will get, read and obey memo) that he won’t even know what hit him.
