Stepped away only to return and see a myth, planted in my brain some time ago, has been properly debunked. I can’t even find the bookmark which left me with a false impression.

Apologies for leaving abruptly.. stuff happened.

From ‘Foreign Policy in Focus’ Blog

“The Military-Petroleum Complex”
by Nick Turse (March, 24, 2008)

“…recent US wars and occupations have been a boon for big oil …Prior to …Global War on Terror, the US military admitted to guzzling 4.62 billion gallons of oil per year. With …post 9/11 wars and occupations …consumption has grown to 5.46 billion, according to the Pentagon’s possibly low-ball statistics.”

Who knows what the ‘truth’ is?

Well then it’s a bargain, Hugh.

World-domination never came so cheaply.

And clearly the information I had recently seen (can’t ‘member where) was useless hogwash.

With all the bases and all the logistical ‘moves’, only 5 to 7%?

Perhaps, as the MIC is so ‘efficient’, we might consider having them ‘in charge’ of everything.

Hugh, it is not that I don’t ‘believe’ you, as my respect for you knows no bounds, I just find those figures quite, quite un’believable’.

So?

If the WORLD uses (per wikipedia) 30 Billion gallons per year and the MIC 5.46 (per the National Defense Industries Association) per annum, though my arithmatical skills be rusty, It seems a ‘bit’ more than 5-7% of total US total usage.

Sorry, Hugh, my linkerage skills are still but nascent …

Jeremy Scahill has been saying that BO replaced his progressive policy advisors with the foreign policy advisors to HRC recently.

There is no way out of the mess that has been made of our country and Constitution.

If Scahill is right, that explains a lot about Obama.

Did you see Blue Texan’s clip from John Adams? I vote “yes” on a Declaration of Independence. I think there is one possibility which is to have candidates that come from the netroots run for office. Netroots support of candidates who get elected then distance themselves from us is obviously a losing strategy.

OK, to be charitable, 2.5% at most. With all the waste in the military, I can’t imagine the industrial portion to be more than 1/4 of what the military uses.

According to the figures here today, slightly less than 2% of US total.

But I don’t think that represents, as I said above, the industrial contribution of the MIC.

Hugh and selise;

Though the actual percentage of use by the American MIC is well beyond my ready grasp, the figure of 40% of American usage might at least serve as a beginning point for discussion.

However, there can be little doubt that the U.S. Military is the largest petroleum consuming organization (?) in the world.

Irony aside, and not dismissing ill effects of mass livestock production, the recent bad news about the effects of corn supply and demand on food prices should be trumpeted by those who promote feeding methods not requiring corn.
