Here's Ted Stevens, via CelticDiva and Progressive Alaska, talking about Mark Steyn's travesty of a book America Alone:
Read the book America Alone. A lot of people complain about that book ... look at the demographic concepts of that book and just think about what's going on in the world and decide whether we want to become Italy or we want to become ... France, in terms of our society and how it's impacted by those who are really against us.
Ah yes. This was the book in which you could read the following passage:
Why did Bosnia collapse into the worst slaughter in Europe since World War Two? In the thirty years before the meltdown, Bosnian Serbs had declined from 43 percent to 31 percent of the population, while Bosnian Muslims had increased from 26 percent to 44 percent. In a democratic age, you can't buck demography -- except through civil war. The Serbs figured that out -- as other Continentals will in the years ahead: if you can't outbreed the enemy, cull 'em. The problem that Europe faces is that Bosnia's demographic profile is now the model for the entire continent.
As I said at the time:
I don't see how it's possible to interpret this excerpt -- given that Steyn is also contending that these demographics are inevitable throughout Europe, and he offers no solution that would accommodate or assimilate Muslims -- as anything other than outright advocacy of genocide and the Bosnian model of "ethnic cleansing" for the rest of Europe. Hitchens, rather typically, softens it by noting that Steyn is saying "that Serbo-fascist ethnic cleansing can appear more rational in retrospect than it did at the time."
And Senator Intertoobs thinks he's just friggin' brilliant. And no doubt, within the Village, he's considered a serious person.
All I can say is: Go Mark Begich.

There’s just nothing one can say about this tripe. Sick people.
What occurs when a culture that favors a religious state government tries to meld with a culture that demands a non-religious state government?
Just FIA, you can keep more than one thread open at the same time, just open another instance of your browser. So you can continue the discussion in the previous thread and the current thread.
Oops, that’s “FYA”.
Good Morning David and Pups.
Indeed. All good vibes and success to Mark Begich! Huzzah!
My honey pretty much enjoys FDL through me. He just ambled by and I told ‘im FDL’s pickin’ on Stevens again. “GOOD!” sez he, hardly breaking stride - altho he did kinda lean over to admire the lovely pic. LOL
heh heh. I know what yer wrestlin’ with these days. I feel your pain.
Spit it out. FISA FISA FISA. There!
I think we’re doing a pretty good job of “culling” in Iraq, Afghanistan and allowing it in Gaza and the West Bank.
Not to mention right here at home.
LOL!
morning all :)
completely OT, but this could be very cool…
‘A new way to fly! Turtle Airships company announces the beginning of construction on a demonstration model of a new form for lighter-than-air airships. The airships are not blimps. They are solar powered and will reach speeds of 200 mph.’

A few years ago, we actually met an AK-an who’s a big fan of Stevens. We were on an organized trip with a bunch-a people, so the only thing I figured would be ”politically correct” under the circumstances was quietly to interrupt the fella’s rant at some point (he’d been demanding agreement with his nonsense) to tell him quietly that we’d just have to agree to disagree.
I thot the guy was going to ’splode right then & there. As he continued to sputter and demand that I change my mind (!), his poor wife was trying to corral him and take him off to a corner to calm his fevered brow. Looked for all the world as if he’d practiced his Stevens imitation in the mirror for hours, years. egad.
WHAT are these people putting in that Kewlaid?!
Does that mean I have to get rid of my Muslim friends? I also have Buddhist and Hindu friends who have brown skin. Do I get rid of them, too? What about the converts? Oh dear. This is a terrible mess.
I wish my Senator, the Box Turtle, were as articulate as Stevens! /s
hate.
xenophobia.
more hate.
i getcha, but can’t bring anything but tears over that subject.
what. a. mess. the world’s been made into by these sorts of looooones.
makes me sick at heart.
The most worrisome aspect of it is that so many Democrats are in on it. It’s a helpless feeling.
Hug them tighter and keep voting, and speaking out.
We’ve got an extra cat-litter sifter here that might be purrfect for those clumping-type of idjit senatorial piles. You want it? I gotta save t’other for voinovichy in a couple years…
This particular “holiday weekend” has been a bitter pill for years, but never more so than in ‘08.
Back on topic, speaking about the genocide in Bosnia, I personally thought it was the right thing to do when NATO interceded in the ongoing genocide. I guess at that point most of it was happening in Kosovo, but it’s pretty much the same thing.
But we had to drop some bombs and I think some people on the left think bombing is always wrong. Can military intervention ever be the right course of action?
Still relevant today..
In his book Propaganda, written in 1928, Edward Bernays, the founding father of today’s PR industry, argued that democracy depended on the successful control of public opinion:
‘The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element of democratic society. Those who manipulate the unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country…’.
try to educate them and, if it doesn’t “take”, work at the primary level to replace ‘em. easier said than done, but we won’t be able unless we try…
Ted Stevens can be very profound sometimes…
http://paxarcana.files.wordpre....._truck.jpg
being profound is not the same as being in deep doo doo. ymmv
Mark Steyn giving Conrad Black the kind of service Black
could only dream of getting from George Will.
Will does it for money, but Steyn does it for love.
nice truck. throw in the plaid jammies & ya got it made.
I saw Mark Stein dutifully reporting Conrad Black’s (his boss) point-of-view at the trial in Chicago. He crafted a fine journalistic niche for himself — prepping the populace for ethnic/religious “culling” and defending very rich folk from the American Justice System.
Makes me want to take a cruise with him and Doughy Pantload. I’m sure one or the other will bring the weed.
Shorter Steyn: For “purer” societies, there is nothing like genocide.
It surprises me every time I look at that picture Ted Stevens isn’t wearing diapers. Or is he? Hmmmmmmmmmm…he could be. ;-)
If Stevens is so much in favor of groups responding to the loss of their culture from an increasingly large minority then is he in favor of the Native peoples of Alaska committing genocide to drive white interlopers off their traditional lands?
Seems that this is Steyn’s whole argument?
picture a consoivatively-RE-lijus leeder BELTING out an over-miked rendition of the nat’l anthem, dressed in a flag-shirt. i kid you not.
ah. middle amrrka. where to begin…..
grownups deepens or underoos?
Ted Stevens could not possibly give a damn about the indigenous people of AK.
ask ‘im. i bet he can cite chaptr ‘n vrse in the goodbook to prove the chosen peepl (hisownself) were promised all the riches in the yooniverse. brown peeple are a nuisance to be shoved aside. /s
OT But isn’t this the same load of yellowcake that was sealed up by the UN inspectors back in 1991 and has been sitting in Iraq for the last 17 years?
Yellowcake secretly removed from Iraq…finally
In fact the UN and Iraq asked the US repeatedly to remove it in the early 1990’s…but it was left there and used as a rationale by the Bush Administration to suggest Iraq’s continuing “interest” in procuring nuclear weapons and that nuclear materials “might” fall into the hands of terrorists. But every time the UN checked the canisters were still there, fully sealed and untouched. In addition this was low grade uranium and would have required thousands of centrifuges to process it. Not something the run-of-the-mill terrorist org would have handy.
And despite all these assertions in the run-up to the 2002 invasion about how dangerous this material was the US never bothered to remove it until NOW? 17 years later?
In the words of the noted scholar bugs bunny, “what a maroon.”
The only thing that can keep this type of ethnic cleansing from occurring is building a nation of laws, with say a set of rights for all. There was a country that had this before the likes of the senator from
Alaska and his ilk decided that it meant what they said it meant and it was just a piece of paper.
Can we please just go back here to a system of majority rule, minority rights and then maybe we can preach to others
It’s all about the immigrants! Immigrants! Close the borders! Do these geniuses not know that Bosnia and Serbia were part of the Ottoman empire for hundreds of years, until the late 19th century?
My point exactly. But Republicans will soon be asserting that this isn’t simply a “European Problem”.
They are arguing that unless walls and armed forces along the border can’t keep ‘em out, that the Hispanics will soon be taking over the country…then the white population of the US will take up the “Continental Solution” (seems that Steyn really means “Final Solution”). They’d rather give up Democracy than racial power.
Seems these folks seem to miss the idea that the democratic ideal would be taken up by the current minority. It’s not the loss of those values that Steyn, Hitchins, and Stevens fear…it’s the loss of white privilege.
Here is an interesting post from Steven Gilliard - The British led into a trap in the MiddleEast
The Group News Blog and DKos have collected Gilliard’s writings.
In addition those Bosnian and Serbian Muslims didn’t “immigrate” in from anywhere. They were already there, and converted to Islam during Turkish occupation of the region. And, like the Turks themselves the Bosnians have generally be far more “Western European” influenced that the highly xenophobic Serbs.
I agree.
and whoopsies to the Stevens and Steyns of the world:

As a matter of fact, I could find no way of wishing anyone a happy anything.
I hated the songs being played incessantly wherever I went in public.
And the dumb fireworks– just colorful boom booms while real bombs are falling in my name.
positively obscene.
Underoos, of course. ;-)
the dems are probably slightly more inclusive - they only fear the loss of elite american privilege.
wow, a religion chart that actual has my religion on it!
I thought it was quite fitting that the country was celebrating with fireworks on the same day Jessie Helms died. I’m tellin’ ya….it was the best 4th of July I’ve had in a long time and I woke up that morning thinking it wasn’t going to be (what’s to celebrate when the president hates the country, brown people, all people, and all laws/rules/regulations?).
Yes, that’s the exact same stuff. In the same barrels, even. FOX, of all sources, was the only MSM to note this that I saw.
Boxturtle (NOT the scum that Gnome refers to @11)
but no place for the agnostics (that would be me)? :(
lol, well, kinda funny having a non-religious pie slice on a religious pie :)
Oh how they’re getting nervous as Dana Milbank explains…
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....02627.html
Here is a draft of an open letter from the obama fisa group.
i missed the zed on new thread.
Morning all. Ian’s upstairs.

Shorter Steyn: The Muslims are so savage that we must massacre them all without mercy.
WWJC?
Who Would Jesus Cull?
-G
Maybe Stevens needs to have his toobz tied.
Milbank was pretty snarky. Great video, thanks.
I thought it was pretty hysterical too. He gets it while the rest of the WHPC does not (well, except for Ms. Helen Thomas). ;-)
The Bosnian Muslims, Croats, and Serbs were all from the same stock. The Muslims are those who converted to Islam when the Turks controlled the country; the Serbs are Orthodox, and the Croats are Catholic. They speak the same language and pretty much look the same, though there are differences that look huge to the locals and small to the rest of us.
Thanks for the reference to Celtic Diva’s and my convern over Sen. Stevens’ book review of Steyn’s screed, David! Howie Klein wants me to write about this today for Down With Tyranny!, so, even if the Alaska press doesn’t know WTF is going on in the crypto-Fascist book world, the rest of the country will know about Ted’s glowing book review.
The last time that policy was tried in Europe, wasn’t it called “The Final Solution”? Just what is the difference this time around?
