Good morning, everyone! We're taking a break from bikes this week to look at two things that caught my eye these past few days.
First, the Sublime -- Using refurbished old wind turbines as an affordable way to get farms, schools and small businesses into wind power:
[Aeronautica Windpower] is betting that a large variety of new locations can be found for these 50-500 kilowatt recycled, green-power generators across the rest of the country as they get replaced with larger machines.
According to the company's industry research, over 10,000 machines that were installed during the mid ‘80s and ‘90s may soon be replaced by larger, more modern turbines. That's a lot of generation capacity that would otherwise be scrapped.
"While big machines make sense on a wind farm, these ‘mid-scale' machines are perfect for agriculture, schools, villages and other commercial and industrial applications," said Brian Kuhn, VP of Marketing for Aeronautica Windpower.
[...]
While shipping large turbines from California to Massachusetts is costly, the company said that even with transportation costs, the overall sales cost for a refurbished turbine — ranging from US $80,000 to 120,000 — is still quite low in comparison to the cost of a new turbine. And while all the work is currently being done in the East, the company does have plans to open plants in other locations, such as California.
[...]
"There's still a lot of life left in these machines," Kuhn said, "and it would be a shame to waste them. In fact, our prices for recycled machines create some of the best economics in the wind business. In many cases the investment in equipment can be recovered in as little as 4-5 years, with free electricity thereafter."
Wow. This is just unspeakably cool.
For the price of a typical piece of farm machinery, a farm can have its power needs dealt with and have plenty to sell back to the grid if desired -- and have it pay for itself in a few years. And can you imagine how cool it would be to have wind-powered electric tractors doing your chores? Now, with grain farmers' bank accounts flush from corn cash, is the time to snap up these critters.
That was the Sublime. Now here's the Ridiculous:
A BREAKTHROUGH Australian cervical cancer vaccine has become the target of a scare campaign by a conservative American lobby group which does not agree with young women having sex, the drug's manufacturer has claimed.
Who would be such despicably stupid jerks? Why, our old Clinton-hating friends at Judicial Watch, that's who:
The documents released by Judicial Watch show that some of the deaths occurred within days of vaccination. But the reports also note the deaths of patients weeks and months after vaccination. One death noted did not occur until 115 days after receiving an initial dose of Gardasil, and three others occurred at least 50 days after vaccination.
"I would say none of the 18 to 20 deaths they are reporting have had anything to do with Gardasil at all, and in fact we have found that some of the people claimed to have died are alive and well," Dr David said. "They are not credible and it is all a way of pushing their abstinence ideals."
A spokeswoman for the FDA, Kelly Riley, said there was nothing in the reports to cause a review of the usefulness of the vaccine. "As far as the spontaneous abortions are concerned, Gardasil is not indicated for anyone who has been sexually active," Ms Riley said.
"These adverse reaction reports have not been analysed. If there's a death after someone received a vaccine, and long after if they had a car crash, a bee sting … these would be filled out. It does not mean Gardasil caused it."
Then again, what would you expect from a group whose founder, Larry Klayman, would sue his own mother?
Is it too early for a drink yet? Maybe I should pop over to John Cole's place and see if he's got any martinis ready.

Zed? Do you guys even say that any more? HI :D
Firsties!
Hello Jackie! How goes it?
I thought these two versions of what happened at W’s 4th of July speech yesterday was interesting to see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
and MSNBC’s version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
morning! up early for me because I’m waiting on a Blue America-type phone call…
Nice to see everyone I usually miss. If you are mixing drinks (its not even 9am yet) I’ll have something with orange juice in it.
from EPU–Land:
“Speaking at the home of former president Thomas Jefferson, Bush was heckled during a ceremony where people from 30 countries lined up to be sworn in as US citizens.”
where do they keep coming up with all of those people such as the ones who gave him a standing O at the end of the speech? My guess is that most of that crowd at Monticello wouldn’t have a clue as to what Thomas Jefferson stood for and believed.
And how did the Code Pink lady make it all the way up the aisle, to within a very few feet of the stage without the Secret Service hauling her down - or worse? (It was on another video where the woman can be seen running all the way up the aisle, unmolested).
Great post, PW, it really brings back memories. When I was very young, my father worked for a company that sold the old Aermotor Windmills to farms.
Now I live on a mini-farm and am considering my own electrical generation, although I’ll probably go with a solar system large enough to power the house and sell excess back to the grid.
Wow. That just about says it.
The only redeeming thing is, did you check the comments below both? SOMEONE is waking up, even if the 28-percenters persist in looking away. here’s a sample comment:
finally Bush actually goes outside. Get used to it, these guys are going to follow that asshole around for the rest of his life.
Wow! Wish I had my headphones so I could hear this (I’m tying on my iPod touch today).
Where’s the shitting sparrow when you need it
Cool! Have you checked out what the Amish are doing with solar lately? They are the leaders in rural solar. Seriously.
Here’s the one where the woman runs all the way down the aisle, before being “grabbed”….she got pretty darn close…although the flowing pink banner doesn’t maker her look particularly threatening…*g*…
Notice all of the protesting voices…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....._0704.html
The mimosas are over in the corner, jacq!
PW…those wind turbines are such a great idea. We don’t need to become independent from M.E. oil…we need to become independent from US oil barrons.
yeah - that’s the one.
although the flowing pink banner doesn’t maker her look particularly threatening…*g*…
agreed, but anyone can wear pink. Bush’s SS not lookin’ too good yesterday.
I still think that somebody in the WH is getting a big kick outta sending Georgie out where there are at least a few real, un-pre-screened people, just for the hell of it…
I need one…I’ve been sick with the frikkin’ flu all week…grrrr…:(
You have an interesting point. Hmmm.
Last night at a 4th party, after reading the Bill of Rights aloud,(which would make a great tradition right before the fireworks are handed round) my husband and I talked with a friend who markets solar panels.
In the last week, a small panel has been introduced that is designed to be added on to. Think solar lego blocks. It’s not a lot of power, but at around $1000, it’s an affordable entry into solar.
Here, in Washington state, we can tie into our meter box and sell power back to the power company. Setting that up with this panel might be about another $1000. So the first panel starts to pay for the second panel, then they finance the third - this is compounding at its finest.
So, for $2000 to $3,000 people can phase into solar rather than having to commit $20,000 or $30,000+ for a full system. I’m so excited. This is something we can afford!
So, umm, what was Bush saying about not seeing so much protesting any more? Maybe he didn’t see any of those fluttering Pink banners or hear any of the catcalls. Deaf and blind. Unfortunately not dumb (in the unable to speak sense only).
Where’s the shitting sparrow when you need it
For a speech on the Fourth of July, wouldn’t have an eagle been more appropriate?
Or a flying elephant?
Jayt
How is your son doing and where is he now?
somebody always (almost) says “zed”.
it’s ritual. it wouldn’t be FLD without that.
imho.
Heh, heh…well, maybe he means “we” don’t “see much protesting anymore”, because the freaking MSM “tunes” it out…literally…as can be seen by comparing the videos. Makes me wonder how many protests we haven’t seen or heard over the past 8 years…
Well said. Now if we can keep them out of the renewable industry. where they’ve gotten a foothold in solar technology.
Nothing compares to a brown pelican. One launch can cover three or four people with a good splat.
Digg it for PW
Did you guys see this? I’ve been out of pocket for awhile, so I don’t know what’s been up..:
“The American colonel, troubled by what he was hearing, tried to stall at first. But the declassified record shows he finally told his South Korean counterpart it “would be permitted” to machine-gun 3,500 political prisoners, to keep them from joining approaching enemy forces.”
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/....._0705.html
Glenn Greenwald has another take down of another outrageously dishonest defense (this one by Nancy Soderberg in the LA Times) of the FISA bill and telecom immunity.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/g.....index.html
Democrats have taken up the Republican tactic of crafting a fact-free narrative which they then repeat ad infinitum, because it must be true if they all are saying it, right?
OT from the Guardian UK, Colombian hostages freed for ransom not covert op
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl.....tworkfront
A little something to send to those who have forgotten what this experiment in democracy is all about.
Thomas Paine, Common Sense
Dugg, thanks for the link.
Anyone know why state and county parks are not jumping on this? As far as I know, publicly owned territory that borders rivers, lakes or the oceans could provide a way for local and state government to bring in revenue on land they already own.
This will be worth following. Wouldn’t surprise me. Bottom line is these folks are free and nobody got hurt.
The issue of whether paying ransom to either criminals or guerrillas is the “right” thing to do is open, however.
the more i read about the clinton administration, the more i think that this is nothing new. what is new, i hope, is that they won’t be able to get away with it as easily as previously.
marcy has a post up on this - she wonders if john mccain’s trip was not unrelated: John McCain, George Bush’s Bagman.
i have my doubts…. hard for me to believe anyone would trust him with that much money.
Employers use federal law to deny benefits
Big business screwing the little GUY Again and the SCOTUS screwing him yet again! WTF has been done to this country that a company can away with this sort of thing and be happy about it. Just shows yopuy there are a lot screwed up people out there… no compassion at all for their fellow man if there is a buck to be made or saved by them… Money is worth more than life itself…. begs the question just what is the price of one life??
Well I agree with you there, except that the timing of the release is suspect. Why have hostages languish in captivity for days, weeks, months so that McSame can look stately? It’s evil.
I wouldn’t put it past this administration…. “We will never negotiate with the Terreisst” FU ASSWIPES
Timing is everything. If money was paid it was paid long before McSFB showed up. I have no doubt the end game was timed to McCain’s appearance but the people involved in this type of operation wouldn’t let McSFB hold the car door open for an operative. I think it safe to say that this operation was well under way long before McSFB even knew he was going to Columbia. The covert folks made very good use of the time after the loss of the top three guerrillas. Whether it was a ransom or simple military op it was executed probably close to perfectly. At least to the outside observer.
They wouldn’t have to actually physically bring the money there in US cash…where would anybody come up with 20 mil in cash…oh, yeah….and, and, you’d have to have a special, super-duper airplane to get it there….oh, yeah the sugar momma express…oh, and..Lieberliar was there…so the outcome had to be beneficial to his interests somehow…oh, yeah…hmmm…drugs..contras…nah, couldn’t be related to Hersh’s tales of covert ops in Iran…could it???
Wow. Sure sounds like Iran Contra Part Deux…
Was Ollie the pilot, or was John driving?
You’re too kind….really dumb, Im sure.
I’d venture to say the op was moved up vice back. The more time that passes the better the odds that something will go wrong.
The captives were mercenaries - not up to anything good when they were captured…
Sorry - left for a bit there - thanks you for asking.
He’s in Fort Sill, OK, in Basic Training, and happier than he’s been in a very long time. He says that he feels at home and at peace. He doesn’t even mind the heat, or the marches with heavy packs or anything - just says that he’s getting a lot stronger.
I’m thrilled for him - he really needed to get out of this town anyway, and he’s loving where he is.
I’m tempted to tell him he’s not *supposed* to enjoy Basic Training, but - nah.
So glad to hear that he is happy and doing well. We never stop wanting our kids to be happy no matter how old they are. I’m sure that it gives you some peace of mind, too. Will be thinking of him in that Fort Sill heat.
selise, ygm
thanks - got it!
ps, im on hold!
my bike seems to be wanting to go out for a ride. See y’all later…
Well, at least there’s no video of McSame on the scene with a Smith and Wesson directing the prisoner recapture.
Bob in HI
We have quite a few wind turbines along the Altimont Pass and scattered in Northern California. I don’t hear much protest about them in these parts.
(preening)
I am on a roll… Margaret has a new post and a PIE video! YUM.
Maybe even the secret service is a little sick and tired of hearing his BS long about now. Not that they would put his life in jeopardy, they are too good to allow that to happen.
I notice most con artists laugh and make jokes when they are nervous.
On Gardasil. It isn’t an Australian drug. It was developed at Dartmouth in New Hampshire.
On wind power. I’m sure Lester Brown said _the_ place for wind power in the United States was the belt running from North Dakota to west Texas. As punishment for foisting George Walker on us, we should avoid putting wind power south of Kansas for a few generations.
Yes, transmission costs exist.
Thanks for the link, Hugh. I sent even more excerpts than the following to my network that I keep encouraging to call/write their senators. I am thinking maybe I’ll send the same excerpts to senators directly via email, myself.
Glenn makes it clear what is going on. The “haves” presume to break the law with impunity, we “have nots” do not. His final paragraph “Our Congress, with the political and media elite cheering, is about to violate every one of these principles. They are taking away from the judiciary the power to adjudicate allegations of lawbreaking. They are creating a two-tiered system of justice …” This is not rocket science. But it is American History 101!
Ian a couple of flights up with a visit to the Beach
While I believe groups such as Judicial Watch would make up shit just to push their own agenda, I am just as suspicious of Merck’s (the drug’s maker) motives. They tried hard to make it mandatory, which turned me off to it right away.
It’s hard to know who to trust anymore.
Hey PW, just want to let you know your bike posts aren’t wasted :-). I’ve got an eZee kit and a FreeRadical on order (both backordered). It’s an 8 mi trip over, um, “undulating” territory to the grocery store here in rural Maine, (thus the higher torque of the eZee kit over the BionX); hopefully soon it will be a gas-free trip.
Thanks for the posts and links.
And BTW, I found the folks at cycle9.com to be friendly, helpful and on the same wavelength.
I’ve been enjoying your biking posts too, PW.
(and I’ll have a bit more to say about both them and cycling a bit later)
