As I remind the people here in my blue-turning state of Virginia on a regular basis; Elections have consequences. Here, the good people of Prince William County elected a majority-Republican County Board of Supervisors (CBOS) last year, largely on the basis of “illegal Immigration” hysteria that the rethugs were so good at generating (and the Dems so inept at countering).

Now, the CBOS are cutting funds for schools, parks and libraries, senior citizen services, and other social programs on the basis of a “revenue shortfall crisis.” However, there seems to be all the money needed to fund one high-priced study after another, always conducted by companies with strong Republican ties. Oh, and the CBOS is also great at ignoring zoning ordnances and planning board recommendations when it come to their friends wanting to build commercial development in former scenic and historic farmland areas.

As I remind people; Why are you surprised at what is happening? This is what Republicans do.

What’s so bizarre about all this is that the government sells this land at pennies to the acre to lumber companies who then turn around and use the acreage for purposes wholly unrelated to the original rationale. If you or I did such a thing on our property it would void the lease…but that doesn’t apply in the world of Bush-Cheney, it seems. Apparently Plum River is pulling the same stuff in Maine…so much for the respect that these two have for the citizens of their erstwhile “home states”*.

And here’s something even more ironic…the government and environmental groups are having to pay Plum River to actually PROTECT the lands that were leased to these environmental rapists!
Baucus, Conservation Groups Announce Massive Land Deal. I wonder hoe many of these acres RE-PURCHASED (likely at massive profit to Plum River [ex-Burlington Northern]) are going to have sub-divisions and McMansions nestled inside of them now?

*
Never considered Dubya and his Daddy’s gang of “Texans” much more than a modern-day version of carpet-baggers.

I was there about six years or so ago on business. I hated it. Not to mention that I was there in the middle of winter and the sun went down behind those hills at about 3:30 and didn’t struggle back up until after nine.

Though I was kind of in awe of the technology. Syncrude does great spin.

Missoulian leans right, so they may be delaying this a bit or they may be saving it up for Sunday to build sales.

Hell, all of the retirees moving into the Bitterroot and Kalispell are Republicans. Has dramatically changed the politics around here. In Ravalli county (the Bitterroot), there is an endless battle between locals who want improvements to roads, schools, etc. and the out of state retirees who don’t want to pay any taxes.

Yeah, I noticed that the Missoulian — which I know for a fact subscribes to the WaPo news services and should have had that story available for readers — had nary a word about it online today. Dunno if it made the print.

Yeah, the guy in a lot of people’s minds who represents the wealthy outsiders is Ted Turner, but it’s becoming pretty damned clear that politically speaking he’s in a distinct minority.
