We hope we have helped to give you the tools to do just that on FISA and beyond. If you have gone out to a 4th of July parade or event with a sign or two, or show up at a town meeting to ask questions -- please send us any photos or video you take.
As we celebrate Independence Day, think back to the Founders of this nation -- their long odds, facing down the King of England at the barrels of his muskets and cannons, with little to no funding, fewer allies, and a wholesale threat of the loss of all of their personal assets, their families' security, and their lives...all of this at stake, and yet they fought for freedom, for liberty, for the rule of law over the whims of a petulant monarch.
If you haven't done so yet, take some time today to watch the videos in the This Brave Nation series. Because everyone needs some inspiration once in a while, and these are superb.
Today, let us stand for liberty. Celebrate what has come before us -- but know that there is much more work to be done.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
-- John Adams (YouTube):
A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.
So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life, a leadership of frankness and of vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory.
-- Barbara Jordan:
There is no executive order; there is no law that can require the American people to form a national community. This we must do as individuals, and if we do it as individuals, there is no President of the United States who can veto that decision.
As a first step -- As a first step, we must restore our belief in ourselves. We are a generous people, so why can't we be generous with each other? We need to take to heart the words spoken by Thomas Jefferson:
Let us restore the social intercourse -- "Let us restore to social intercourse that harmony and that affection without which liberty and even life are but dreary things."
A nation is formed by the willingness of each of us to share in the responsibility for upholding the common good. A government is invigorated when each one of us is willing to participate in shaping the future of this nation. In this election year, we must define the "common good" and begin again to shape a common future. Let each person do his or her part. If one citizen is unwilling to participate, all of us are going to suffer. For the American idea, though it is shared by all of us, is realized in each one of us.
-- John F. Kennedy:
In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility -- I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it. And the glow from that fire can truly light the world.
And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
-- From the statement of Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam, via Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:
A time comes when silence is betrayal.
This is a Day of Affirmation -- a celebration of liberty. We stand here in the name of freedom.
At the heart of that western freedom and democracy is the belief that the individual man, the child of God, is the touchstone of value, and all society, all groups, and states, exist for that person's benefit. Therefore the enlargement of liberty for individual human beings must be the supreme goal and the abiding practice of any western society.
The first element of this individual liberty is the freedom of speech; the right to express and communicate ideas, to set oneself apart from the dumb beasts of field and forest; the right to recall governments to their duties and obligations; above all, the right to affirm one's membership and allegiance to the body politic -- to society -- to the men with whom we share our land, our heritage and our children's future.
Hand in hand with freedom of speech goes the power to be heard -- to share in the decisions of government which shape men's lives. Everything that makes man's lives worthwhile -- family, work, education, a place to rear one's children and a place to rest one's head -- all this depends on the decisions of government; all can be swept away by a government which does not heed the demands of its people, and I mean all of its people. Therefore, the essential humanity of man can be protected and preserved only where the government must answer -- not just to the wealthy; not just to those of a particular religion, not just to those of a particular race; but to all of the people.
And even government by the consent of the governed, as in our own Constitution, must be limited in its power to act against its people: so that there may be no interference with the right to worship, but also no interference with the security of the home; no arbitrary imposition of pains or penalties on an ordinary citizen by officials high or low; no restriction on the freedom of men to seek education or to seek work or opportunity of any kind, so that each man may become all that he is capable of becoming.

So, Christy, we meet again!
HAPPY B’DAY AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!
Morning all — was getting The Peanut set up with her easel and finger paints. It is pouring the rain down here today, so we’re doing alternate family activity instead of the parade which has gotten rained out. SIGH
How is everyone this morning? Thought a little inspiration would go a long way for folks today. I know I needed some!
Thanks for a wonderful collection of quotes, Christy. Sorry your parade got rained out. Did you have some great signs prepared?
Man, sad as that is for all the families that planned to go and watch, it must really be sad for all those who spent hours putting together floats and preparing for their moment “in the sun” so to speak. As usual, the sun is shining brightly here, but the temperature is expected to be in the one teens. I expect to stay home tonight to comfort my pets who will undoubtedly be stressed out due to the noise. I love fireworks, but I love my pets more!
Honestly, I didn’t, Jim. I had planned on making a “Rule of Law Not Rule Of George” sign, but in the rush of trying to pull event information together for the organization tool the last few days and all the tech and data tweaking we’ve been doing with it, I forgot to get poster board. So I didn’t have anything to put a sign on…SIGH
So, in that regard, I’m kinda glad the parade got rained out. If they reschedule it, I can get some poster board and make a sign. I suppose that makes me disorganized blogger person, eh?
Hey Jim. We didn’t get any rain yesterday!!! Saw your reply to me yesterday after i had to go. Sounded like a good trip w/ the kids. And , yes, I cannot figure out Nelson at all. I guess there’s nothing to do except keep callin’ and faxing. it’s very nice here now so I’m going top get a swim in soon, the go make some pasta salad, then go eat like a pig. For the rest of the weekend. Then back to FISA duty on Monday. I may give Mel a call. Both these guys are from Orlando, so maybe they’ll take my opinion extra seriously.
I wouldn’t call that disorganized at all. Getting the tools out to everyone was a wonderful gift to us all and to the country and will allow many more signs to get prepared and seen.
Good Morning Christy and All! I just gave my wife her Birthday present and made her coffee from Costa Rica which is where she is from. I got lucky to mary someone who will always a holiday with her birthday.
What does Peanut like to paint?
btw, I meant to say in the post above that the links to the speeches often have full speech and either audio files and/or video of the speeches as well. Which I thought would be some serious fun for a lot of folks if they wanted more than just a snippet…
We’re in a monsters and dinosaurs phase at the moment — but most often, it’s more like Jackson Pollack. *g* She has a really good eye for color, and that’s fun for us.
you aren’t a disorganized blogger if your wearing a red white and blue boa
Happy 4th Christy!
Thanks for more inspiration. Sulked off last night wondering what there was to celebrate today, even a backyard fireworks display didn’t bring out much of a smile.
So last week I was at our annual conference and walking through the book store part of the exhibition hall. Here’s what I came away with:
The Soul of a Citizen
The Impossible Will Take a Little Longer
Getting a Grip
Moral Courage
Any idea of what kind of a mood I was in?
Oh, and the subtitle of Soul of a Citizen is “Living with conviction in a cynical time.” The book was published in 1999. How scary is that?
Happy Birthday to Mrs AZ Matt!
Yeah, it missed me by about a half mile, too. That’s good, because I just replanted two pastures before my trip and want some deep roots to develop–can’t happen as well if it rains every day.
I guess I’ll call Mel, too, just to remind him there’s a Constitution. Not that he really cares…
Marathon, not a sprint, eh?
Really. A great job getting those things to us, Christy.
Thanks. Rub it in. I get up this a.m. and I’m OUT of coffee!
Well, we got close to 40 events in there as of yesterday — haven’t checked this morning to see what else may have been added. My one big regret was that I got some information about a town hall with Chris Carney — but I got it after the event had happened. Next time…
I”ve heard that WALL-E is supposed to be amazing. We old farts might even drag ourselves to see it. I bet the peanut would love it. And it’s driving the theocrats nutso. All the more reason to see it.
those words are the only thing getting me through this.
interesting typo. I make it myself often, but then I would.
We’re planning on going to see it either today or tomorrow. We held off on going until Mr. ReddHedd got home from the two weeks with the in-laws (who are still in the hospital, but doing much better, thanks). She’s been dying to see it — and I doubt we’ll be able to hold off any longer than today. *g*
LOL — my fingers automatically type in Christy, I think, and I neglected to delete back one letter…
talk about raining on parades. He’s the last person I’d want around if I were getting citizenship.
Good for you, Christy; we’re taking the kids to see it this afternoon, too.
Been a long time since the entire family went to a movie with such good reviews.
–August 18, 1864 Remarks to the 164th Ohio Regiment
Abraham Lincoln
So, what’s the theocrat objection to WALL-E? I knew the anti-global warming people were crabby (due to some ranting from a local radio person), but I’ve missed the religious objection somehow…anyone fill me in?
Good one!
now where do i go to check them out??? i’ll get used to this stuff.
As for random acts of patriotism, I did have my sit down with Joe. And he was generous with is time—about 40 minutes. I think he likes talking with me even though he knows how unhappy. My guess is that he doesn’t often get to talk with people who don’t want anything from him—other than for him to do his job, that is. He voted for FISA because he thinks its a better bill than the one before. He read the whole thing, he’s been meeting with Stainy biweekly and still isn’t in the inner circle. But it seems that the Blue Dogs really are running congress. They put the pressure on ‘cuz they didn’t want to go home without it and have to explain why they are “protecting the terraists” (my words, not Joe’s) He pointed out that Nancy even voted on and for it—an act the Speaker rarely does unless to break a tie or to make a statement.
So we’re not going to take this country back until we can break the back of the Blue Dog coalition.
On the way out Joe said to me that he is pretty open in August for a meeting, that between now and then I would be sure to find something to be pissed off at him about. (his words, not mine.) He’s probably right on that but I give him credit for inviting the criticism.
My wife volunteers at the local BIA school. They went into Flagstaff last Friday with the kids to see Wall-E. Since she had to be in the front row with about 10 kindergarteners I think she wouldn’t mind seeing it again but abit farther back.
good for you Deb. I know you were having a hard time working yourself up to keeping that meeting.
Here you go — I linked it up above, but I should have made it more clear what the link was to: the new organization/event tool.
It’s the anti-science ID people who are nut jobs who feed into and from the reich wing hate mongers. But of course all the bloviating is coming from the $400 mil mouth of Thrush Limpballs and his ilk.

April 6, 1859 Letter to Henry Pierce et al
Abraham Lincoln
The guy must have been a liberal.
thanks for everything.
Yes, it was tough getting there. My anger was pretty well stuffed. Problem is that Joe is a likable guy and he does pay attention. His memory scares me.
It’s good that he’s open to the discussion. That’s much better than a lot of folks, truly. Good on you for going — and for being candid with him about what you were thinking on all of it. That’s exactly what is needed, and more of it.
I get the feeling when I’m talking to folks on the Hill about FISA that most of them haven’t paid a lot of attention to the nitty gritty details because, like the Libby trial coverage, it’s complex and requires a lot of substantive, in-depth education about a whole range of issues to really get all of the issues involved.
But when they realize that a whole host of people out in the country are paying attention? A bit of panic sets in that they should have paid attention all along. That’s what I’m getting now from a lot of folks. And, in my mind, a bit of an eye-opening moment of “oh shit! my constituents care about civil liberties, I’d better educate myself” is a good thing. More of that, please.
that’s cool. hey jim, tehre’a a FISSA rally at Nelson’s office in west palm on Monday. that’s 143 miles from me. probably closer to you, no?
has anyone mentioned that during Bush’s speech from Monticello this morning, he was at times almost drowned out by the voices of angry protesters?
Some very
un-Americanpatriotic souls yelling things like “Get him out of here!” and Fascist!” at the prez.GWB’s reaction? Let’s say it reminded me of the reason why there is a site named “Smirking Chimp”.
Yup! He would be disowned by the party he helped to start.
–October 15, 1858 Debate at Alton
Abraham Lincoln
i gotta get thaty swim in and make the salad. have a happy 4th. it’s a great country. good to have a day to step back and be proud to be an amwerican. i know, i know, cindy mccain is proud to be an american EVERY day, right? good day to everybody.
oh, and it was because of you and demi and dmac the rest of this community that I didn’t cancel the meeting. Thanks for the push and the support.
Hmm, those are handy tools Christy. Here’s one for CT.
Congress on your Corner — Chris Murphy (Fighting FISA)
Sunday, July 6 at 11:00 AM
Stop-n-shop, Meriden (Meriden, CT) - 14.2 miles away
Congress on Your Corner in Meriden Sunday, July 6, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Stop and Shop, 485 Broad Street Meriden, Connecticut
I am offended that Bush would even be allowed to walk on the grounds of Monticello. I have been there and it is so peaceful and beautiful and Jefferson is my personal hero. The comparison between the 2 men boggles the mind. Of course, in all fairness, Bush offends me by just breathing.
Oh, puhleeze, this brings to mind Jesse Ventura (our governor emeritus), who, by the way, is thinking of throwing his, er, boa in the ring to run against Al Franken and Norm Coleman for the up-for-grabs MN Senate seat. Urgh.
I am so glad you met with Sestak. As I said the other day I donated to his first campaign and am disappointed. Did you get the feeling that he might change his mind on FISA?
but John wasn’t until he was 31 and away from home. Marion had a great term in the last thread, “poutrage.” I like it. Will use it.
took courage - my hat’s off.
Oh wait, that’s my 1-20-09 hat.
My hat’s *on* to you (?).
You know what I mean…
Jesse Helms has died today.
Son of a bitch died on the 4th of July, same as Jefferson and Adams.
Christy, how come I am looking at the events and your name is listed as host on all of them?
No. But I’m still sending him stuff to his home e-mail address which I now know he actually reads.
The one thing he didn’t know about which I sent him a link for is that the guy from Qwest said that the wire tapping started BEFORE 9/11. If you are basing your decision on a rationale that the pres. did what he had the power to do based on the AUMF and then you find that he was doing it before he had the power to do so, that might provide an opening for reconsideration. At least that’s what I’m hoping.
But then again, they probably won’t get a second chance to vote. And it’s the Blue Dogs who are wagging Stainy. So even if there’s a revote and he gets it right, I don’t see how the picture changes. That doesn’t mean I’m not trying. Sent him more today, Kagro’s article from last night and Glenn’s latest including the links to his take down of Obama’s statement.
I’m trying. And so is he in a different sense of the word.
Joe who?
Never mind. I saw Sestak.
My daddy told never to speak ill of the dead. But then I haven’t always followed his advice.
Rot in hell, Jesse.
I thought he was already dead.
I’m sure Adams and Jefferson won’t be extending him a warm invite into their celestial club. He doesn’t qualify.
Picked up the Idaho Statesman piece on patriotism in America in the last thread, I think. Interesting comment (among other interesting comments):
Welcome to the world of mega-gray, then.
Cheney today. Spew alert.
i don’t think the blue dogs are the cause, i think they are the excuse.
imo, what the house did in march to pass good fisa legislation, and to do it in a smart way that even got good coverage by the press shows that the dems in the house are perfectly capable of doing the right thing and doing it smart. they just have chosen not to.
Ok Pups you have waited long enough….. Digg this Post for all of Christy’s hard work and to support the Lake on the 4th…. the day we celebrate the founding of our country…. lets just hope enough citizens bend their representatives and Senators ears to stop this POS FISA bill dead in it’s tracks…
btw, I should probably say this since I had a coupla questions about this yesterday — I entered a lot of the event information in the organizing/event tool. But just because my name is on it, doesn’t mean I’m going to be there — it just means I entered the data. (For example, I’m not in Maine, CO and FL all at the same time today. *g*)
Hopefully, in the future, folks will be able to use this to organize their own events in their area around the country. Or enter event information in immediately after they find out about it — either from watching the community calendar section of the local newspaper or hearing about a town hall from their member of Congress or something they help plan and want to announce or whatever.
But we thought having public schedule information immediately available for FISA action would be most helpful. So, that’s why my name is on so many events at the moment. Sorry I can’t be at all of them in person!
Obama v. Obama.
Good point.
i’m leaving my garlic necklace on, just in case…
Christy,
Raining in Columbus too…Event changes here as well.
Thank you for all your efforts this week. Thank you for carrying “Founder’s Pride” for the Constitution.
I will email you a pdf of some artwork for a sign to print on your computer.
Have a great Fourth.
I understand, from your comments the past two weeks, that things have been challenging, and somehow, you have managed to still fight for freedom. My humble thanks and extreme gratitude to you and your family. The Klynn family holds your family in our thoughts. Please let your husband know he is in our thoughts as well.
-um, oops, in re: Jesse’s rumoricated deemize.
Sorry, it’s more like 275 miles for me (I’m in Gainesville). I’d love to go, but I have one more pasture to re-seed and I’ll get started right after I make some calls Monday morning. Besides, I would think Nelson will be back in DC by Monday, so no chance of him coming out to talk.
And here I thought you’d acquired “Heroes” like powers. I wish that series were back on, darnit.
OT: diggs for Greenwald:
http://digg.com/2008_us_electi.....nt_on_FISA
He should have died on Confederate Independence Day, whenever that is. Maybe we should contact the Council of Conservative Citizens and find out if they celebrate the day the Confederacy declared independence.
He should have died on Confederate Independence Day,
yep - that old bastard gets the last laugh after all.
Spit.
The bigots in Tampa are replacing their huge Confederate battle flag with a huge replica of Betty Ross’ flag for today. I imagine tomorrow they’ll lower the battle flag to half staff in Jesse’s honour, seein’s how he had so much.
Mine also! If I could have picked *any* day of the year for a birth date……it would be this one. Give your wife an extra hug from me and many best wishes of the day. :-))))
Samuel Adams
Helms was a truly contemptible person. I do not regret his passing at all. I regret his existence.
boyohboy, some folk are offended by the darndest thangs.
re-name a watermelon, son, and have at it with the baseball bat.
Think you’ve run out of reasons to work hard and keep on keepin’ on with citizen activism? Well, CNN’s reporting today [details to come in the SitRoom] that George Bush’s FEMA gave away the supplies that were meant for Katrina victims in Mississippi to other federal agencies instead.
Perfect example of why you can’t drown government in the bathtub, why you need bureaucracy instead of neoconism. Logistics cannot be trusted to ideologues.
I can’t access my homeblog or full graphics here from the tall timber today, but I already put up a few thoughts For Your Fourth… have a good ‘n, pups. Restore, rest up, rejuvenate…there’s work to be done.
Happy birthday to the both of you!
That about says it all.
has anyone mentioned that during Bush’s speech from Monticello this morning, he was at times almost drowned out by the voices of angry protesters?
Guess that’s one of the clips tradmedia won’t be runnin’ again today. *G*
apparently no one told chhurt-off what all those warehouses full of stuff were for, & he done fergit ta’ ask.
whut a prize that fella be. oy.
They have quite the eulogy for Jesse over at America Blog. It’s only a start, but not what the MSM will be reporting.
This was in the alternative media about a month ago. Nice to see corporate media finally catching up. There’s one relief group in NO that’s raising holy hell about this. They’ve been asking FEMA for supplies for over a year.
heh. that helps make my day. and those had to be supporters or they wouldn’t have gained admission to such an important eeevent, right?
You won’t believe the building in his *honor* in the small town through which I drive occasionally; quite disgusting it is.
I tend to be a “don’t speak ill of the dead” kinda person, myself. So I’ll just say, Jesse Helms, bless his heart…
gee, thanks. but, having lived through it, …. later, mebbe.
p.s., THANKS for all the good work you do RevDeb.
I’ll be looking on YouTube a little later. It’ll go viral before the weekend’s over. Hoo-yah.
Don’t worry about ol’ Jesse, I’m sure he has Pumpkinhead to keep him company down there.
got Greek columns n’ ever-thing, does it?
Happy Birthday America, I hope you get over you’re sickness.
-G
Tee hee. We all know what kind of thing follows “bless his heart” here in the South…
Your.
In a corner with William Colby, Hitler and other ne’er-do-wells.
hmmm. food for thot. what’s worse, the evil-tempered old crank or the mild-mannered, pretend-clueless shill?
*g*
*g*
link please, ASAP!
Truth to tell, darlin’, I have tried *very* hard to be looking in any other direction while passing thru’; ugly red brick, if memory serves. The very thought of its existence makes me want to spit tacks!
We luvs ya, Redd. Happy 4th!
You betch’um, Red Ryder. Soon’s ah fine one.
Happy Birthday to You too!!
gracious, dear! look AWAY from the dang thing! now whenever i think jesse, i’ll imagine a mouth full-a tacks & no spittoon big enuf!?!
brain bleach, please, in aisle 102
Random Acts of patriotism? Ah was thinkin bout moonin the president? Whaddya think?
