A group of suspicious rabble rousers took out a half page ad in the New York Times Thursday, threatening to resist the normal workings of our government. I'm calling attention to this radical group, because if their subversive ideas ever catch on, our current system of government could be seriously threatened and dozens of officials run out of town.
Here's what the ad, which appeard on July 3, page A15, said, verbatim:
INDEPENDENCE DAY
July 4, 1776 - 2008When in the course of human events the government becomes destructive of the ends for which it was established, it is the Right of the People to alter it and demand restoration of those Constitutional Principles that have so long assured their Liberty, Safety, and Happiness. Therefore, on the anniversary of our Independence, we offer this new declaration for our times.
The history of this president is one of arbitrary usurpations of power, the effect of which is to establish tyranny through false promises of greater security.
He has created a multitude of secret programs and sent swarms of petty officers to spy on Americans in a misguided effort to combat foreign terrorism. He has invested these agents with sweeping new powers to monitor our conversations and ransack our personal papers and effects without judicial supervision or any reason to believe -- as the Constitution requires -- that a crime has been committed.
He has further claimed the power to disregard legislation that Congress has passed.
He has suspended the laws and treaties against torture, authorized the kidnapping of mere suspects, and transported hundreds of prisoners beyond seas so that no independent judiciary could question the legality of their mistreatment.
He and his supporters in Congress have granted amnesty to the officials who unleashed torture and humiliation upon helpless prisoners, to the disgrace of our nation.
He has denied these prisoners access to attorneys, family, and friends and has claimed the right to try them before military tribunals specifically designed to disregard the most basic principles of law.
He has imprisoned thousands of lawful immigrants for months without charges, under brutal conditions, until his agents, rather than independent courts, decide that they posed no threat.
He has wrapped his usurpations of power and his deprivations of liberty in thick cloaks of secrecy, thereby showing contempt for the rule of law and the proper functions of Congress, the courts, and the press.
At every stage of these oppressions we have sought redress, but our petitions have been answered only by repeated injury.
We, therefore, resolve to resist these usurpations by all lawful means at our disposal. We insist that the powers of our national government be shared by all branches of that government and not concentrated in one alone. And we call upon Congress, the courts, and the press to reassert their constitutional functions and restore the promise that is America.
To these ends, we mutually pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.
This subversive "Declaration for our times" was signed by several hundred people from all over the country and supported by groups with such suspicious names as the "People's Campaign for the Constitution," the "Bill of Rights Defense Committee," the "Defending Dissent Foundation," and the "Electronic Frontier Foundation." If you happen to see any of these folks in public, let them know you're on to them.

Hi Scarecrow. Happy 4th! I’ve posted all Senators’ contact information over here. The HTML for the table is available for download as a text file as well.
Hello, danps — thanks for the link.
Happy 4th!
I sure like this Declaration, hope it gets noticed.
nice tribute to our country’s beginnings and history on democracy now!
Can it or this be Digged/dugged/who cares, you get the point.
Morning all.
We’ll certainly notice it. The MSM, not so much…
I’m signing on with this rabble
Happy Fourth of July, Scarecrow, pups. Anyone want to be proud of our country again?
Happy 4th Firepatriots !
Scarecrow,
Totally on to them - I posted their video over at my place.
Page A-15 usually isn’t noticed except by people that hang out here.
Me. personally, I’m in mourning for our country.
I think I’ve posted this before:
Here’s the thing. Our congress is now being run by the Blue Dogs and the rest of the dems are tied up in knots saying that they can’t do anything to the law breakers in charge because of the law. Until he totally took over, everything Hitler did was legal.
Happy 4th, yah, that’s right.
full disclosure: that’s me and not the mister up at 9 :D
Marion @ 6 -
We’ll certainly notice it. The MSM,
not so much…not at all.Fixed it for you. ;-(
Oh, and Betsy Ross and Ben Franklin got married. I guess that’s something to celebrate.
Happy Birthday America!
(Can I say that or are the news media going to say I have to prove my patriotism?)
are you wearing your flag pin?
I’ve got some ancestors who signed on with the old bunch, so it’s a family tradition. I’m signing on with you.
aww, that is a sweet story :)
may they live Happily Ever After
Sigh. Thanks, you’re right. I’m just an incurable optimist.
Oops, no, I don’t even have a flag pin! I guess I must not be patriotic.
Marion, what did you think of the book?
Booman has a bit of the history of FISA. Worth a read.
Nowadays you can’t be patriotic be without one. (btw my patriotism sparkles, my pin is rhinestones!)
What is real patriotism anyhow? Cherishing, honoring, and defending the Constitution?
or wearing a flag pin?
finding this rabblle at the end of this of all weeks was reaffirming -
it was frustrating, maddening, disheartening to see so many of the FISA comments “get over it”, “it’s just one of many issues”, “be pragmatic” “why are you being so mean to Barack ?”
. . .and I’m talking about places like Kos and TPM - don’t even get me started on what passes for informed commentary over at Obamaworld (the kewlest site evah!)
goodness we have our work cut out for us
For those who missed it, Obama issues a response/statement wrt to FISA last night.
Marcy has a critique of its failure to address “accountability,” and Glenn Greenwald does a section by section critique.
Bottom line: the response is flawed, inaccurate, misunderstands and/or misrepresents the bill and current law, provides little indication Obama understand/appreciates the deep concerns folks have with the FISA fix.
to be worn upside down until there is clear demonstration that we’re getting our country back.
Marcy’s critique of Obama on FISA is here.
Funny. Just sent the following to my Congressional district mailing list, and also to assorted others:
Please check this out.
Text at Firedoglake.
These folks are part of a group that took out an ad in the NYTimes. Seems there are patriots among us, and none of them wears one of those little flag lapel pins.
Happy Fourth of July!
gah Scarecrow, stop whining! at least he responded to us /s
McClatchy article on changing views of patriotism.
It should be re-released. And the first chapter should be required reading for every “right to life” advocate in the country. And turning it into a movie wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
Ya’know……..every day I think, “The tradmedia *can’t* get any worse.”
And they always do; almost wish there weren’t so many years on this old frame so there would be no first-hand memories of what *real* journos were like. Double sigh……but there’s still Amy and Moyers and a few others who carry the torch. They and what we have in this community are the only things that keep me sane.
Thanks, Scarecrow for finding this truly inspiring group. Late last night I put up a post on my blog at Open Salon riffing on an idea I had on an FDL thread recently. I listed many of the original offenses by George III in the Declaration of Independence and noted how closely they parallel the offenses by George W. Bush. I just added an update with the video cbl2 posted on her blog and a link to the group.
It’s so refreshing to find that our country still has patriots.
Are we surprised? I met with Sestak and he doesn’t either. The blue dogs have Steny and Nancy ding backward flip flops to accommodate them because they are afraid, and their constituents are afraid—because no one’s standing up and telling them they have more to fear from their govt. than from the terraists.
But Obama’s freakin’ awesome, isn’t he?
The folks in this house will be voting for Obama come November, but not with any degree of enthusiasm. We’re more than a little angered…
like maybe DISGUSTED?
I’d still LOVE to see Jane write the screenplay. It’s right up her alley.
Happy July 4th, one & all.
A youtube clip from the excellent HBO series John Adams seems appropriate this morning-
JOHN ADAMS-Declaration of Independence-Drafting in 1776
(Paul Giamatti as Adams, Tom Wilkinson as Franklin, Stephen Dillane as Jefferson)
ditto here.
Edwin Friedman (in his lengthy tome, “Generation to Generation”) boils it down to this:
Differentiate yourself and maintain a non-anxious presence.
thanks to those of you who posted the video. I’ve moved it to the top of the post.
Obama and the Flag Pin. Brought to you by CBS and ExxonMobil
Oh Marie, your wish became their command I believe.

Yep, that too. Dismayed, distraught, disaffected… Not that I really want to diss Sen. Obama, you understand…
Hmmm… A summer blockbuster that’s also a teaching tool. Sounds like a winner!
thanks — I noticed the video but should have used it directly; it’s at the top of the post now.
Our family will be marching in a small town parade today - with our congressional candidate
but a certain dfh is quite excited at the prospect of questioning our current congresscritter who will also be in attendance. He is to have an impromptu townhall - heh
that’s the clergy systems “bible.” I’ve had it for 20 years and went to a couple of workshops he did long ago. Blast from the past.
film at 11 !?
Poll: Flag pins, protests both patriotic (USAToday). Be sure to check out the “Patriotism in action?” section for some voting results on what shows that someone is patriotic.
Great! I met Iglesias @ a book signing a while ago. Now get to ask some of the questions there weren’t time for that evening. I’ll be there!
A telling quote from that article:
“Saluting the flag, standing proud, taking your hat off when you hear the national anthem, crying when you hear taps, doing what you can for your country - that is patriotism,” he said.
Interesting the things that come first. ;-(
that’s quite a cast of DFH’s, isn’t it?
you’re making me cry.
how sad and pathetic.
lol -
have promised our candidate to be on my best behavior (vs most patriotic behavior)
but . . . our district is home to Fort Hood (2nd largest Mil Installation in the country) and this chump has voted against anything that looks like a benefit to Military Personnel and their families - including the New GI Bill
I think central texans have a right to know his rationale - don’t y’all :D
To quote our Dear Leaders leader, “SO.”
We’ve suffered a Tyranny the last 7 years (twelve when counting the conservative GOP Congress) with no change in sight. We are doomed as a republic as long as 25% of voters vote by sound bite, politicians spending an inordinate amount of time fund raising, and pander to special interests (Corporations) with a two party system based on keeping incumbents in office. What good is a nifty ad showing the many and grievous crimes of the administration, when the other two branches of government are complicit in the furtherance of the crimes? While the Fourth Estate generally backed The Powers That Be in the past, current corporate ownership and consolidation back privilege to unprecedented heights and is unlikely to change. Voting the bums our only bring in bums in training.
End of rant
It’s too bad we didn’t get a chance for all of us to sign on before the ad ran. Oh well, I’m signed up now and hope they keep up the good work.
How convenient of them to include their names and states for easy round-up and interrogation.
Mayer’s book is a mastermpiece, and like a lot of others, I was driven back to it by what this administration has pulled off on the American people. The great historian Friedrich Meinecke wrote a brief lament in his “The German Catastrophe”, which he wrote in his old age at the end of the war, that like Hannah Arendts’ books take you inside the process of the degradation of civil liberties in a nation that at the beginning of the 20th century inspired a significant part of the New Deal reforms.
Our history books have gotten us so inured to the notion that Germany’s decline to totalitarianism was ‘inevitable’, that we haven’t learned properly that it was a social process played out in real time like any other, and like the one we are now experiencing. Also underplayed, because overplayed by the old left of the 1950s through 1970s, is the role played in that degradation by the very wealthy, whose fear and loathing of democracy made Hitler’s party temporarily acceptable to them.
Sound familiar?
Thanks Scarecrow. Happy Fourth to a great patriot, you!
digg
Let’s hate Barack Obama for the 4th of July today! Yeah, yeah, let’s ban with the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Howie Carr by saying we are the real patriots and Barack is not! Rah rah rah schish coom bah! We are Right and Barack is Left Behind!
Spit.
Alright. I’ll take my snarky angry sarcasm somewhere else. LOL
One of the verses of John Denver’s It Amazes Me always pops into my head when flag pens, Pledge of Allegeance, hand over heart, ribbon magnets, etc. come up:
Come and listen to the story
Of a journey once begun
Of a people and their plenty
And their season in the sun
And how they gave themselves to symbols
And things that they could hold
Living lives in desperation
In the fear of letting go
Yeah, great family systems stuff. I am not clergy, but worked in “the church” for many years, both at the parish and administrative level.
Well, so did the signers of the original Declaration. esp. John Hancock.
Interestingly, this came up last night wrt a comment that Rove studied Hitler’s rise to power & aped it. This is a very good course on Hitler’s Empire, and the professor, Childers (who is very good) specifically approaches the issue of Hitler’s rise in the context you present, i.e., it wasn’t inevitable and what were the events that existed and the events created by Hitler that made it happen.

This seems to go with the music to the “Beverly Hillbillies” theme. (Yes, my mind trends weird.)
have you had the chance to read the whole book? those are just the bits i found the most compelling but there are lots more.
don’t think i could read mayer today though. too depressing. :(
OT, sort of, but useful. The folks at Sadly, No took note of a lacuna in our vocabulary:
The comments on this post are replete with wonderful suggestions, but I think my favorite may be “poutrage.” There are a few words I think we should make an effort to popularize. Poutrage certainly will be useful this election cycle when talking about the MSM.
way too familiar.
all too familiar :(
has the course given you any insight (or do you think it might) into our present circumstances and what we might do to best resist?
And how cowardly if they had not; putting your “john Hancock” on the line is what this ‘time’ is about, following true ‘precedent’.
Must not allow FEAR the upper hand, these days, potfry …
I’ve read bits and pieces. It’s too much to take in without wanting to do damage to myself or others. I’ve thought about reading it this summer—it’s on a pile with lots of other books which I don’t get to because I’m sitting in front of this damned laptop reading things from all over the place and conversing with you all. Must. Close. Laptop. But I probably won’t.
it’s coming at us from all directions. the Rs say we must fear the scarey brown people and that is supposed to justify our support for bushco. the Ds say we must fear the Rs and that is supposed to justify our support for obamaco.
well, selfish me, i like it when you don’t close the laptop and hang out here instead. ;-)
Required reading (okay, suggested reading) for all. I think I’ve posted this before, but worth the repeat. Adam Curtis’ BBC series, “Century of the Self” is simply amazing. Particularly the first segment. Here’s the link. Amazing and chilling re going to school on Hitler, among other things.
off to stalk the wild gooper - enjoy this day firedogs !
Hmmm. Well, I guess some of the wingnut expressions of patriotism make “up from the ground came abubbling crude” pop into my head. Otherwise, I can’t see it.
Recognition of the propaganda and therefore resistence to it. I can do that with both hands tied behind my back but the U.S. population as whole, not so much.
Actually, the course made me really pessimisitc about the U.S. Germany went Nazi in the context of gigantic social & economic change. Germany became a country late in life, it underwent the industrial revolution very late and quickly, which resulted in all sorts of social and economic upheaval. It was riven by religious differences (RC in south, protestant elsewhere). The Weimar Republc rules for representatives in parliament turned out to be very unstable. It lost WWI when the population was being told they were winning right up to the end. Thus the population thought the rest of the world had ganged up on them and stolen their victory. And then, of course, reparations. In that context, anyone who could provide some pushback (and 1936 Olympics was critically important for reestablishing Germany’s international prestige) would be a hero. Even so, Hitler never got more than 37% of the vote and was decreasing in popularity when he took over the government.
Against all that upheaval, compare the U.S. that caved in to W after 3000 citizens were killed by terrorists. Pretty disgusting population, IMO.
The real question, of course is what we do now. Remember that in signing the original Declaration, the signers were pledging to each other “our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor”. This passage should be taken literally, as they were at risk of arrest and execution. In my post at Open Salon, I stated that the Constitution gives the perfect solution for the current problems with impeachment. That the current government is too cowardly to begin such proceedings leads me to hope that the government finds its courage to undertake its prescribed course of action before the citizens must then take theirs, following the original Declaration.
Thank You for the significant post. I am reminded of the Holocaust poem.
Niemöller said he was not quite sure when he had said the famous words but, if people insist upon citing them, he preferred this version:
“In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.”
I downloaded the course last night after eCAHN mentioned it. Will listen to the lectures over the weekend. Here are the lectures, from the course guidebook:
Lecture One The Third Reich, Hitler, and the 20th Century
Lecture Two The First World War and Its Legacy
Lecture Three The Weimar Republic and the Rise of the Nazi Party
Lecture Four The Twenties and the Great Depression
Lecture Five The Nazi Breakthrough
Lecture Six Hitler’s Assumption of Power
Lecture Seven Racial Policy and the Totalitarian State
Lecture Eight Hitler’s Foreign Policy
Lecture Nine Munich and the Triumph of National Socialism
Lecture Ten War in the West, War in the East
Lecture Eleven Holocaust—Hitler’s War Against the Jews
Lecture Twelve The Final Solution
After downloading these I began to wonder if there was a course covering Marx’ Captial. Lo and behold there’s a course specifically done by a CUNY professor on reading the book. Watched the intro (2 hours) last night. Hooked.
We had a saying in Nam:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil.
Cuz I’m the meanest m*****f***** in the valley.
Might want to change the wording to fit the times, but you get the attitude.
Until recently, I could never understand how the Goebbels’ premise, that a lie, repeated often enough, becomes accepted as the truth, could work. After this administration, I fully understand.
“They’ are “selling”, we don’t have to “buy”, selise.
Why allow them, any of “them” control of our thoughts our actions.
By the same token, let those actions not simply be, “reactions”.
Of course, selise, I know that there is very little indeed, fear-wise, that would still your thoughts or tongue! You always speak to truth.
;~D
We don’t realize it in our day-to-day goings about, but we are having an effect upon the media.
What you see in their hideous efforts are their flailing death throes. They are dying slowly, but dying they are. My state’s two largest papers are in a death spiral from which they will likely never recover, having made cuts to hundreds of jobs and much of their coverage during the last year; we know they are desperate for operating cash and they’ve got little access to credit. What we cannot know, though, is what desperate measures they will take to stay alive…
If you can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Fourth, may I suggest putting a stake in their heart, killing your subscription to any corporate-owned media outlet that is not fulfilling your needs for truth, and purchase instead a subscription to an online indie media outlet that you trust.
The corporate media as we know it today did not exist in the time of the original Declaration of Independence; the media included pamphleteers who spoke truth to power, at risk of their lives and liberty. We cannot expect the corporate media which has been protected by this administration to take up cudgels of words against their benefactors; we must start over.
Start with a pamphleteer like this one and help keep liberty alive.
Keep in mind that there were 25% or more who chose not to actively rebel against Mother England in 1776. They remained like Bush Dogs, scared to rebel while undermining the Colonial Governement; Loyalists they were called.
‘We’ always have had, as you say, the twenty-six percenters.
But, then, someone must bring up the rear …
The Savannah Daily Disappointment certainly does not fulfill my need for truth, but it serves a VERY useful purpose under the litter box.
i thought this was interesting: Your brain lies to you
there is very little media that is not corporate owned or corporate paid for (check the ads at fdl).
i don’t find that a reason to celebrate - i want a new business model to replace the old.
Problem is, this rear “guard” pushes the weakest and most vulnerable in front of them, using them as objects of derision and scorn.
Jim, Congress shall not bestir themselves ’sufficient’, the burden is yours, and mine.
And my life and treasure, such as it is, are already committed, as are, I am certain, yours …
Thanks, selise, I was just looking for that article. This is why there are the 25% who resist the truth; their own brains lie to them.
Then we certainly must work, SD, on our social amenities …
Society being, as you well know, merely the relationships between individuals, how we treat each other.
it’s not about the 25%
it’s about all of us.
Hear! Hear!
The breakdown of community I attribute in large part to Ronnie Rayguns with his “every man for himself” attitude, which as been adopted as gospel by the Rethug party. I’ve got mine, fuck you.
The current economic woes may very well assist us in returning to a time when we cared for those around us. Changing people’s attitude, one person at a time.
Prof. Juan Cole’s column for July 4th begins w/these words; a good read to combine w/this post & thread:
Your Fourth of July and My Fourth of July
“Your Fourth of July is blood for oil.
My Fourth of July is the pure sunbeam of peace.
Yours is the imperial presidency and “so what?” to public opinion.
Mine is “deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”
Yours is profiling and discrimination.
Mine is “all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.”
Yours is “My country right or wrong.”
Mine is avoiding “Offences against the Law of Nations”
Yours is the veto of child health care and rejection of Kyoto,
Mine is an America that cares about the wellbeing of our children…”
http://www.juancole.com/
That’s very interesting. I’ll have to try to be aware, but I’m not sure I can think of instances where that has occurred with me. I’m sure I’ve heard things incorrectly, or accepted things as facts until I discovered otherwise, and probably semi-willingly deluded myself or rationalized, but I can’t think of instances of the phenomenon described. I’ll try to keep any eye on myself.
Some of us would prefer that the heppocampus be compared to a prosperous person’s curled pinkie finger. :)
