My favorite part of the Fourth isn’t the fireworks, or the hot dogs, or the grilling of various meats with the neighbors, or the watermelon. Or the parades or the patriotic movies (though HBO’s
John Adams is absolutely awesome — go get it immediately if you haven’t seen it) or getting the day off or even the
Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi.
No, what I really love about the Fourth is walking around with the smug satisfaction that those bunch of authoritarians running around today — the Krauthammers and the Limbaughs and the Noonans, the Goldbergs, the Wills, the K-Los, the Steyns, the Brookses, the Dobsons, the Robertsons, the Yorks, the Malkins and the Hewitts — would all undoubtedly be Loyalists in 1776. Heh.
Enjoy your day.

Happy Fourth? I’m still trying to work up the energy to put my little flags out.
A little flag was put out for me. And everyone else in my subdivision. By one of the realtors who lives and works here. The flag has her business card attached below. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a flag out. I kind of like it.
Dugg!
Hey BT! Happy Fourth.
And to you and yours.
I suspect they would be the Confederati of the civil war times.
So it is true. Democracy and capitalism are the same. :)
Tough day to be an authoritarian cultist.
Happy Birthday, America!
For Father’s Day, Mrs Peterr and The Kid got me the HBO production of John Adams, but we haven’t yet had an opportunity to view it.
I think today’s the day. What a great clip!
Now if only we had a Congress today that was willing to stand up to another King George.
You’ll love it. It’s exceptional.
Getting ready for our fourth of July party—-Sousa marches front and center- and lots of copies of the Culpepper Flag—the real image of the Revolution- the snake designed by Ben Franklin with “Don’t Tread on Me” and “Live Free or Die” printed around the snake. The boys from Culpepper Virginia fought and died under these colors in the Revolutionary War.
We started the day with this classic. The Kid turned the volume waaaayyy up, and sang it at the top of his lungs.
Yet another reason I love my kid.
I haven’t seen this film, but in our house “1776″ is a huge favorite. In this scene, however, I think you get the anxious flavor of that vote in a much stronger way. However, Franklin’s message about ‘hanging together’ is as meaningful today for us as it was for them almost three hundred years ago. The success of the GOP since Reagan has been not in pulling us together or encouraging us to pull together, but to split apart…to distrust our neighbors, to be afraid of letting people know who we are and what we believe. After 9/11, anyone who disagreed with them was labeled a traitor; they claimed the flag for their own and the concept of patriot for their own. I’m not sure they understand what true patriotism is. If what they wanted did not have money attached to it, would they recognize it as a friend. I think not. So, let’s all remember what today stands for – and what we all together stand for. Because on Monday morning, we need the strength and courage and simple persistence to start the fight to protect the Constitution again.
They had a name for Goopers during the Revolution—-”Tories”.
HBO is showing the John Adams mini-series right now. It started @ 1PM EDT and runs until 10PM EDT.
And 1776 is on Turner Classic Movies tonight @ 11PM EDT
But this time we don’t get to ship them out to Nova Scotia. Dubai anyone?
BT, you nailed it.
BT – Great post. Have a wonderful 4th of July!
Heh – I’ll have to get the dvd – we dont’ ‘do’ cable (or broadcast for that matter – we have geographic issues).

One is bound to be perfect for your celebration today!
Let me be the first to say good riddance to bad rubbish.
Ah. Sounds like the business world has forgotten what the genesis of cable TV was.
For those who are not aware, cable originated to bring the networks and standard TV fare into those remote areas of the US that could not pick up TV signals via rooftop antennas and such. Areas like remote, rural, or mountain valleys where the direct signals were blocked. Areas far removed from the metropolitan areas with multiple TV stations. Places like Upstate NY or northern MI (or at least the northern part of the lower peninsula) or Appalachia.
I saw the first 2 episodes of John Adams, but scheduling interfered with the rest. It was riveting. DVD’s on the way.
As for your list of Authoritarians:
I’m not sure if I hope they believe they are right or not, but being bereft of a clue may turn out to be a blessing when this is all over.
The true enemies of Liberty are more likely to live in Hartford, or White Plains, or Atlanta than in Baghdad!
The John Adams series was one of the best things I’ve seen on tv for a long time … Happy Independence day folks, we have a republic, if we can keep it
Want to know who the enemies of Libery are?
They say “The constitution is just a piece of paper”.
I sheepishly admit that that clip brought tears. How can that be? I’m a liberal and therefore hate America. Or is it the agony we show knowing that they (you know who) have royally fucked up our country. Now that’s patriotism!
It’s so much more profitable to have cable systems in cities, where the local government will cheerfully give you a monopoly so you have a nice captive customer base, and allow you to charge what you want without requiring much at all in return.
That’s why the small satellite dishes sold so well in rural areas: portable, cheap, and got you TV that was, if not local, at least not full of snow.
i agree that they’d be loyalists. how do I know? politics aside, they’re losers. another reason—what jefferson, franklin and that crowd did took alot of balls. limbaugh, o’lieley, hannity, et al, have none.
I seem to remember the BIG ones selling well. For a while those people got damned near everything for FREE.
Take back the revolution america- it’s been stolen by loyalists.
The blood of the revolution has been hijacked and used to ferilize the growth of oil companies and freedom hating politicians.
Just came across this and wanted to share:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07…..ref=slogin
This is the part that I wasn’t aware of: “she and her team busily scheduled more than a dozen big-ticket events over the next few weeks at which the target price for quality time with the candidate is more than $30,000 per person.”
Thanks ‘netroots’ I’ll take from here now is what Obama is saying.
reply
Was it your bday today or nearby, or am I mis-remembering?
If it is, Happy Birthday!
Today’s authoritarians are loyalists to the Republic Party and the Bush Family, a family that views itself as American Royalty.
There was a part of america who wanted no part of the revolution.
There was a part of america who fought adding the Bill of Rights to the Constitution.
There is a part of america who would rather allow the rich and powerful to do as they like rather than restraining them by the principles the nation was founded on.
What do we call these people?
Our Host Jane has a new post upstairs!
Fourth of July Round-Up: What’s On the Barbie?
I belive that they are called ancestors of the Bush family.
“……. the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.”
Fourth of July quiz:
From what document is the above quote taken?
I just finished reading that myself. The article really goes over the latest “causes for concern” on Obama’s stances:
1) He broke his promise to try to keep both major parties within public-financing limits for the general election.
2) abandoned his vow to filibuster an electronic wiretapping bill if it includes an immunity clause for telecommunications companies that amounts to a sanctioned cover-up of Mr. Bush’s unlawful eavesdropping after 9/11
3) tells evangelical Christians that he wants to expand President Bush’s policy of funneling public money for social spending to religious-based organizations — a policy that violates the separation of church and state and turns a government function into a charitable donation.
4) endorsed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the District of Columbia’s gun-control law. (What could be more reasonable than a city restricting handguns, or requiring that firearms be stored in ways that do not present a mortal threat to children?)
5) criticism of the Supreme Court’s barring the death penalty for crimes that do not involve murder
Thanks BT,
A comment I made on Scarecrow’s thread this AM when discussing the 26%ers.
“Keep in mind that there were 25% or more who chose not to actively rebel against Mother England in 1776. They remained like Bush Dogs, scared to rebel while undermining the Colonial Governement; Loyalists they were called.”
Happy Fourth Everyone!!
I’ve been a lurker here since the Libby trial and rarely post. Just wanted to thank you all for you posts and all the knowledge you impart. I’ve learned so much about so many topics and actually feel comfortable discussing and even arguing with some of the people around here. Pensacola is lonely for a liberal thinker. But, you give me ammunition.
Especially thanks to Jane and Christy and so many others.
OT- forgive me please. JPL9 in an earlier thread asked for advice for a dog that’s afraid of fireworks. It’s obviously too late for today but my vet recommended DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) put out by veterinary products labs in Phoenix AZ. Can’t say it helped my little terriers (5) very much but many people swear by it. Hope it helps.
Again, thanks and have a wonderful Fourth and may we have many more after we take back our America.
Sara
So glad to have you with us on this day, sfwmson.
If we see JPL9 later, we’ll forward your note.
Thanks for that note about the fireworks; my dog is cringing now as our neighborhood starts lighting firecrackers early. And nice to meet you.;)
Prayers of thanks should go back generations to embrace those who risked their lives by putting their names on the declaration and by being willing to represent themselves as leaders of the Revolution…..
They were a part of the shot heard round the world.
Why is it that changing positions on issues is considered to be so terrible today? Someone who never changes is someone who never thinks. That’s what we have in office today. Do people really want to have Bush as the standard for all future Presidents?
Yesterday.
Well, good enuf!! Hope it was a good one!!!! I remember you and Elliot are this week!
You got that right! And we’re due for a second wave of the Declaration of Independence. Thanks, BT for the clip. Perfect choice for today!
As a Canadian, I say, Not fair. Many of the Loyalists came to Canada, but they sure didn’t grow up to be like the collection of imperialistic, anti intellectual, authoritarians you listed. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to take credit for producing them yourselves.
“Now if only we had a Congress today that was willing to stand up to another King George.”
Peterr, Congress has failed us. Our government has failed us. I think it’s up to us, if we stand up in greater numbers. 8>)
2008 – I vote “yes.”
