Ah yes, now this is some logic:
In January 2007, gas prices were at a measly $2.17 a gallon. Since then they've skyrocketed to more than $4.
Considering the average amount of gas used per household, the rise has cost us approximately $1,690. With the average 42-inch plasma screen going for $975, just the extra cash you've forked over for gas in the last year and a half could have bought you 1.733 plasma TVs. And that number just keeps rising.
This stunning bit of bizarre logic means one thing!
President Bush and many Republicans argue that increasing domestic production of oil is the right strategy.
Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has become a recent convert to this philosophy as well; at least as far as offshore drilling is concerned. (His lack of support for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge [ANWR] is a distinction I can't understand. If we can drill safely without environmental harm under thousands of feet of water, why not on a small patch of ice in the middle of thousands of desolate square miles?)
And I bet Glenn Beck was one of those saying invading Iraq would be awesome for gas prices.
Here's a bit of math that works almost as well:
We've spent about $600 billion or thereabouts in Iraq so far and we're spending at a rate of another $150 billion annually. This is just pure budgetary layouts, I'm not talking about the "$3 Trillion Dollar War" stuff and all the other related factors.
There are about 80 million families in this country (a rough guess).
That's about $7,500 a family.
Granted, 80 Million of these would cause Global Melting...
This is a 60-Inch Pioneer Kuro, a 1080p plasma with "blacks" darker than Dick Cheney's soul.
Every family in America could have one of these suckers, and a nice 7.1 home theater system, a blue ray player, an X-Box and still have money to blow on the entire line of John McCain golf-apparel if George Bush hadn't invaded Iraq.
And tens of thousands of people would be alive.
Suck.on.that.

That’s about $7,500 a family.
Maybe that’s 5-10 mortgage payments or a down payment on a higher mileage car. Or maybe a little less credit card debt. Or maybe, just maybe a little back into the savings account. You know all the things that would keep us out of a recession.
Glenn Beck is not dumb he is a fucking idiot.
Thanks for the post Attaturk. Hope you and yours have a wonderful Independence Day. Cbl and I will walk with local Dem Brian Ruiz in the parade today. Brian is taking on the horrible John Carter (r) for Congress.
Let’s see.
$1,000 to a Iraqi refugees
$1,000 to an Afghani refugees
$1,000 to a Palestinian refugees
$1,000 to New Orleans refugees
$1,000 to the ACLU
$1,000 to Veterans of the illegal occupation
$1,000 to my retirement fund
$500 for a giant party on 1/21/09
Now *there’s* a plan worthy of immediate implementation!
And speakin’ of beck………was clicking thru’ channels last night and hit one where he was giving a speech (complete with podium) to a scary large group of people. About 30 seconds was all the ol’ stomach could take; it had the sound of one of those “Heil, hitler!” moments. :-(
Good morning, and Happy Independence Day, pups. The NYT has a gift for us this July 4 — Bobo is on vacation! It’s Paul Krugman, solo, today. He wrote about “Rove’s Third Term,” and says that the Wesley Clark affair revealed something important about John McCain. Now we know what a McCain administration would represent: namely, a third term for Karl Rove. My blood runs cold…

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got some red, white and blueberry shortcakes. (Any food that has biscuits can be served for breakfast. New Southern rule…!) Since Attaturk was doing calculations I thought I’d share the equation I learned yesterday. One 10 pound bag of Science Diet Kitten Food + one month + one gray kitten = a gray kitten who’s 2 pounds heavier. Pam the vet says he’s going to be a big boy, based on the length of his legs. Have a fabulous Fourth, pups.
Marion, What a nice surprise for you to discover that Bobo is off today. It’s so nice that you read his columns, so we don’t have to. Thanks! Do you have any spectacular 4th plans?
That sounds as though it could cause nightmares!
Bloody good thing the body was totally worn out from a workday in the yard otherwise it would have been a distinct possibility! That man is forkin’ certifiable…..and a pretty good indicator of the depths to which cnn has sunk.
There has been discussions on how the democratic party was able to build a strong internet presence, but MSM still has major influence over political news. The Republican Party with the help of corporate ownership have spun their message for years. Obama had better learn quickly how to play the system or his non change on Iraq yesterday is only the start.
I have a mutt who is terrified of fireworks and this year her master (yeah, right) moved closer to where the fireworks occur. Any ideas on how to calm her down. She tends to shake more than a bed that vibrates in a Best Western.
A google search produced if that helps
You’re missing the point, Attaturk. If we drilled in Alaska and off shore, EIA estimates the price of gas would drop enough so that instead of buying the 60 inch plasma, we could have bought the awesome 62.17 inch plasma, but only during a two-three year window, although by then none of us will be able to afford cable rates.
Actually that is a good idea; the cost is a tad steep but maybe Pets Mart has something similar at a more reasonable cost. The dog looks like he is listening to ABBA. Vets recommend benadryl but from past experience I can tell you that doesn’t work.
I’m hoping to get some shelves put up in the bedroom to give Hoover more room to spread out on my desk. He’s busy learning “cause and effect” now — if I push that with my paw, looky, it falls down! Other than that, catching up on some work I haven’t had a chance to do and puttering around in the garden when it’s not too hot. What are your plans?
Nothing that I can offer for this year. For next year’s explosions you might check with your vet to see if there are some doggy tranquilizers that might help. I know that cats can take amitryptyline (Elavil) so probably it would be okay for dogs too. How do I know this? I had a cat who sailed through thunderstorms but freaked out with fireworks. It did seem to help her.
Watching the Peachtree Road Race right now on TV and a cookout with friends this afternoon. I moved into a house that needs updating on a large lot 3/4 of an acre so I can always keep busy. I’m close enough to see the local fireworks from my patio but instead will be holding the dog.
Husband and son are out giving blood this morning; I’m baking http://www.recipezaar.com/245088 for the new, expanded(we have inlaws now) family bbq today. It poured on and off all day yesterday; doesn’t look any more promising today, which means the cooking will take place in the garage; the eating will be at our kitchen table…pretty standard Upstate NY 4th.
OT - my favorite interviewer,George Kenney, has Philippe Sands on for this week’s podcast at electric politics:
Boy, oh boy, does that ever sound delicious! I’m a Recipezaar addict myself — I’ve gotten some great hints and tips from their forums, as well as wonderful recipes.
Mornin’ all. Happy 4th!
Selise, Thank you for linking to the interview. It’s not the American Way.
Toby, I just sent the recipe to my son, who is the baker in my family. Since I have a birthday coming up, it seems appropriate.
It may not be the American Way..but it does seem to be the way certain people can behave when they’ve been convinced that other people who do not necessarily look like you, talk like you, dress like you or act like you…are all dangerous. This is completely fallacious reasoning: Exhibit number one: McVeigh, Fortier and Nichols.
New Scarecrow post upstairs…
I can always rationalize making something like this with, “It’s got cream cheese in it, so I’m getting protein.”
Brings back a 707 moment involving my first OES -
Donkey’s ears ago (translation: decades), I was jolted awake to find the bed shaking like the proverbial leaf. First thought, “There may be a storm but ain’t no such thing as earthquakes in WNC!” After waking enough to get up and turn on the light, there was this 70 lb dog who had tried to crawl under a loooooow bed frame. His head and body were visible but the whole hip section was wedged tight and the hind legs were working as hard as possible to get him loose….. I literally had to lift the bed in order to set him free.
Thankee for bringing back that memory and hope you find a solution to the problem next year.
Oh, and today’s me birthday; have a good one when your day rolls around.
to boot, there is only about 6 months of oil in alaska, that’s it
to boot, the oil industry has refining licenses that they have not exploited
to boot, the oil industry has abandoned licenses that were productive
now, personally, I have no problem exploiting new areas to refine
IF they deplete the existing licenses, and even then, they don’t get to mine where ever they want just because it saves them a few bucks, they mine where WE want
the price of oil is not based on how much it costs to produce, it’s based on the market and that’s it
if the industry does not want to exploit their existing licenses they can sell those licenses to companies that will
and THAT is the way this conversation should go
contrary to common belief, oil refined in america is not the industry’s oil it is yours and mine, it is a national asset which they lease the right to sell
the REAL solution is to STOP allowing these companies to take OUR stuff and offer it to the world to bid agains US
what FOOL thought it was a good idea to have to bid against CHINA for our own stuff?
WHAT FOOL CAME UP WITH THAT IDEA?
we need to get RID of that system, what is refined in the states STAYS in the states, they refine the product at a SET profit, if they don’t like that profit, THOUGH CRAP, we’ll lease the rights to that free money to a company who DOES like the profit
we pool OUR stuff just like we pool our water, we purchase from the market what our own supply doesn’t meet
the cost to the consumer will be based on the mean price, that which we produced ourselves averaged against that which we bought on the market
the only problem with petroleum supplies right now is the fact that we infaded Iraq, Iraq had federalized their oil resouces and when they needed to fund a project they would sell more oil.
the industry CAN’T STAND federalized petroleum and THAT is the real reason we went to war in Iraq, to give that control back to “privitization”
privitization is a FAILED economic strategy
Happy Birthday Waccamaw
and isn’t your birthday too Toby?
Happy 4th everyone
On my way down the dial to see what CNN had to offer the other night I happened upon Beck extolling the virtues of, get this, ‘failure.’ Failure, failure and more failure is good to him. No wonder he likes Bush so much. He’s the King of Failure.
Mine was yesterday, Elliott..but it’s kind of you.
It’s a good month to have a birthday, yours yesterday, waccamaw’s today, mine in two weeks and Jane’s on the 25th..
OK, everyone have a great day. I’m off for my birthday trip to a potters just over the border in PA, Mud and Fire. They have a Japanese hillside kiln there. Be back later. Be kind to each other.
Unrepentantliberal @ 28 -
That’s EXACTLY the one I was describing @ #3; wasn’t it totally vile?
Toby @ 31 -
Sounds like a really fun trip; go well!
