A story out of New Hampshire tells us everything you need to know about the nature of the wingnuts out fomenting against immigration:
Rob O’Donovan of Haverhill says the group, Northeast White Pride, is holding a "Close the Border" demonstration Saturday to protest illegal immigration. He says the group is not based on hate or white supremacy, but on having "pride" in white history.
"We reject the popular use of the term ‘racists’ or ’supremacists’ as we don’t hate anyone because of their cultural identity," O’Donovan wrote in an e-mail interview with The Nashua Telegraph. "We do, however, seek to protect our own cultural identity and heritage from being obscured by those of others, especially when those customs clash significantly with the morals and ethics of our American cultural heritage."
Sure, they’re not a hate group. They just want to wipe out brown people. What’s hateful about that?
We’ve known for some time that white supremacists have been promoting immigration as a major recruitment tool, and it has been working. Indeed, the current anti-immigration campaign on the American right is riddled throughout with racists and bigots of various stripes, despite the ongoing and sometimes heated denials by their leaders.
And it attracts them for a specific reason: the campaign is simply a regurgitation and repackaging of their longtime agenda. Which is also why nearly every overt neo-Nazi and white-power rally of recent vintage (see, for instance, the Nazi rally in Olympia a couple of years ago) has been focused on immigration. It has been, after all, their issue for a long time running.
So the recent meeting between leaders of the white-supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens and Jim Gilchrist’s Minutemen organization is not exactly a big shocker:
The Council of Conservative Citizens, a white supremacist hate group, publicly announced earlier this week that it was co-hosting an anti-immigration strategy session with Americans4America, the official Las Vegas chapter of Jim Gilchrist’s Minuteman Project.
Despite the Minuteman Project’s oft-touted anti-racist policies, the meeting took place June 24, offering some of the strongest evidence yet of direct ties between the Minuteman movement and overtly racist organizations.
“There’s a lot of overlapping between our two groups,” Nevada CCC leader Don Wassall told the Intelligence Report. “I met a couple of people from their group who are interested in trying to recruit more and get more people active in both of our groups.”
Not every Minuteman is a white supremacist, of course. But the organization’s claims that it is "weeding out" its racists is really just a sham. After all, there’s a reason that it has to "weed them out" in the first place: they really are just a fresh new mask for a hoary tradition of old-fashioned racist nativism.

“We’re not racists! Just ask us!”
Ptooey.
Bob in HI
Close what border, Vermont? /s
A couple of quick points for the record (since I’ve lived and worked up there) it looks like the Haverhill in question as Haverhill, MA (pronounced HAY-vrull if you care). Haverhill is near Lawrence, home of the Eagle-Tribune. And Hudson, NH is in the southern tier.
Lawrence and Haverhill both have seen an influx of “‘Cans”, that is, Puerto RiCANS and DominiCANS, so these a**hats claiming it’s not racist are trying to blow BS.
Of course, you won’t see them “patrolling” up on the Canadian border.
Isn’t the “Council of Conservative Citizens” a little to similar sounding to the “White Citizens Councils” of Mississippi in the 50s and 60s? If they want to avoid the racist label, they might want to be a bit more creative in their name. Seems that once a Klan member, always a Klan member.
Heh, it’s wider than NH’s…! Btw, they don’t call the Granite State; the Great White State, for nothing… I’ve lived in NH…! ;-)
Yeah, one of their favorite dodges is the “I’m not a white supremacist, just a white separatist” line. They know there’s a real stigma attached to racism so they find any way they can to buffer it.
The other favorite dodge is the one in use here: “We’re not about hating on anyone, we just want to defend our heritage.” Well, there are legitimate white-heritage groups that do just that (think of all the Irish-American, Scandinavian-American, whatever-American groups operating out there). But unlike white-power groups, their raison d’etre isn’t about stopping the pernicious effects of brown people or otherwise attacking them or tearing them down.
Sounds kind of French when you say it that way. ; )
They are the direct descendant of the WCCs. The organizers of the WCC played a central role in founding the CofCC.
Dave, you have been way out there in reporting on hate groups and eliminationist rhetoric. Thank you for all that you are doing. It matters.
A kinder gentler swastika.
So the hate just gets repackaged and regurgitated, huh? Sad.
Your white supremacist conspiracy theories are as pimples on the ass compared to the boom, bust, war, and looting operations of International Bankers upon all Americans by the very private Federal Reserve Banking system.
The very operations, I might add, that cause white supremacy in the first place.

Olympics swimming trials on USA Network. How much more boring can you get? Submarine races, I suppose.
It may be as it’s northern MA, right on the NH border (with Plaistow, NH) and there is a heavy French influence in New England.
What is the deal with Feinman in front of a fireplace in the middle of the summer?
He’s at the Aspen Institute—remember that thing that the Clintons always go to?
Even in Aspen in the middle of the summer you don’t need a fire in the fireplace. What a hokey setup.
yep. It’s all Potemkin. Always has been.

So that means we’ll CTut again in about an hour? *g*
Aspen and AIPAC the only two money machines who managed to escape limitations from the D’s ‘07 sweeping campaign finance/lobby reform.
You sound just like Red Beckman.
Sounds to me like you’ve never been outside on a summer evening above 7,000 feet. I lived in Flagstaff, AZ for 17 years, and I loved the cool refreshing mornings, but I would not want to have spent the night outside without some serious gear to preserve body heat or generate heat nearby (like a fire).

No spoilers from me, but I enjoyed the EJ Dione segment.
Bobschacht@23
I’ve probably spent, adding up all the nights, a couple of months in a tent above 7000 feet in the mountains in the West. Have done extensive backpacking there.
My kids were competitive swimmers, and believe me, it can be very exciting for fans of the sport. Others, probably not so much.
I am all for free speech, but I equate these haters with yelling fire in a crowded theater. Or inciting to riot. Am I off base? Does Germany get it right with their anti-Nazi laws?
Ah, the CCC. The people Trent Lott called “the right kind of people.”
I was a competitive swimmer in high school and college. Hve boxes of medals from my little local competitions. I also ski a lot. But watching those sports is really really boring.
The CCC should require dna tests of their members, just to insure they are made of the white stuff.
what genotype would you test for?
My husband watches golf. Which I only find interesting at the very end. If then.
OK, you’re one of THOSE. Prolly got hair on your chest, too.
Here in Hawaii, we tend to call anything under 70 degrees “cold”.
In my apartment building, which is scarcely above sea level, someone recently placed a fireplace set (brush, scoop, poker) in the give-away corner. But I guess that could mean that they brought it, and then decided that they didn’t need it.

Aloha,

I don’t find any sport of interest, except maybe basketball. In the minority, I know. I got into swimming, helped run meets, even went to the NCAA one year. Not sure I would find it all that interesting now. They’ve changed some of the events, for one thing. But it was good for my kids, then, and a lot of our social life revolved around meets and friendships with other parents. The high school coach was someone who set an exemplary example for the swimmers (and their parents).
But I agree….probably boring now.
Americans who dress up in brown shirts and wear swastikas have some serious issues. They’re funny to laugh at- but they are not the serious rascist threat in this country.
It’s yer next door neighbor who goes on and on about how Mexican immigrants don’t get assimilated and use up his tax dollars who is the real issue.
Don’t go there without a *g*, dude.
Signed,
Old ladies everywhere
I think all this talk about camping above 7K evades the real problem today. Chiggers.
Yeah, I have a neighbor like that. “I don’t mind if they learn the language” he says.
Didn’t we discuss chiggers last week? With pictures? *scratches leg*
Lots of these people are just fuckin freaked out if they go to the store and here people speakin in a language that they don’t understand….they fuckin HATE it!
I must have been busy pouring vinegar in my bath water. *g
get out the nail polish
Had a summer place just south of Flagstaff once. I loved the summer evenings- got a little cold but usually it was fine until midnight or so at least out on the patio.
my experience in the CO rockies is, at greater than about 12,000 ft having my water bottle freeze o/n in my tent (when i forgot to keep it in the sleeping bag with me) and at greater than 11,000 feet all the mid-day thunderstorms were snow.
what is the elevation of aspen?
Base is around 10,000 feet, ski runs go up to 13,000. Think there’s some 14,000 fotter peaks around.
you beat me to it! thank you.
High enough to make us flatland furriners pant and wheeze just crossing the street.
I hate chiggers. I thought junmping in Lake Travis would get them off. OH NOES. They just clamped on harder!
They like the shade, though. So go for the hot sun and hope they retreat.
well then, i’m a wimp – ‘cuz i would love a fire at 10K, want one at 11K and need one at 12K. even at the height of summer.
I was almost “outraged”.
; )
What time of year? Never ran into any weather like that in mid-summer and I was doing my backpacking in the days before global warming.
always mid-summer. i almost always went solo and hypothermia is, i think, a real risk if one gets wet.
Texans rub somethin on em- can’t remember what- gasoline probably- or deisel fuel.
I went solo too. Must have lucked out with weather.
should also specify – i’m thinking specifically about the collegiate mountains area in CO. but also went many times in CA king’s canyon (no thunder snow storms there though).
David
Nice post. I think I prefer the racists that you can see rather than those who are hidden. The hidden ones do the most damage, IMO.
Ok Lurking MOD what happened to the Digg counter at the top… it never shows that the post has been Dugg????
The problem is not in your tv set.
We are experimenting with Digg, there is a delay between making a Digg and when it appears. Working on it.
Digg, Dagg, Dugg
I’ve heard about dusting ones self with sulfur powder. And wearing rubber bands around your long pants and sleeves. Great in hunnert degree weather.
Did you hike/climb camp onMt Whitney? I did, caught little brook trout and cooked them on a rock with butter and fresh lemon (nothing else) over an open fire… on a chilly summer night. Fabulous!
Dit the Mt. Whitney to Giant Forest hike in 1975 iirc, as my first solo hike in the West. Only did freeze dried food though.
Heh, I have to wait for the repeat… I just finished my third trip on moving day for an old friend…! ;-)
A friend who helps you move is a friend indeed.
That’s my philosophy…! *g*

Camped in Kings Canyon for a week and had to catch fish or starve once we ran out of dried food. love a campfire. (Not so much this summer in CA!) I live at the beach now and light a fire most nights…..once the sun goes down it cools off wonderfully. Not so much in August, though. And I live in a town with massive illegal immigration and there are problems. Not all people who speak out against illegal immigration are racists – by any means! Prop 13 wasn;t the only thing that damaged California schools.
F*cker being… well, F*cker…! ;-)
My landloards learn with great disappointment what I, as an artist, deem to be a “studio” apartment. :)
no i never did. highest in north america was mt. harvard in CO. did chirripo in costa rica which i think is a bit higher than harvard. never anything technical. scared of heights and a bit of a clutz. but i do love the mountains.
i bet the trout you caught were goldens. used to be able to catch them easily at anything over 10K in the sierra nevadas. i don’t really like to fish or know how – but it was easy and OMG were they awesome – especially after a few days of freeze dried crap.
Little Mr. Bowtie who’s too timid to say boo to anyone sublimates his machos thru praising others’ pugilism.
PS: is the photo above of the Haverhill meeting —- or is it merely provocative?
Whitney was wonderful.. We never intended to make it to the top.. though we probably made it past 12,000 feet. i wasn’t a mountain i remember spending a lot of time looking out over expansive vistas, but the forrest and the immediate ground was incredible. (if that makes ny sense)
During my ten years in CA.. I climbed every peak in Yosemite at least half a dozen times. Saved an entire crew from disaster in a summer snow storm once.. we were not prepared for it at all. I found a cave in the dark heavy falling snow atop El Capitan, which we all could barely fit into like sardines. The next morning our campsite had been destroyed by bears. Was fun to be hero for a day. 8″ of snow melted by noon too, which was very nice.
It’s from Olympia, where once again the subject was immigration.
Thanks David.
Except that the overt ones give the cover of an excuse for the hidden ones.
wow. amazing.
707! ;-)
As I said, never had really bad weather. Did have a backpack ripped open by a bear a day’s hike out of Yosemite. Food was suspended between two trees, so bears couldn’t get it, but my backpack probably retained the food smell, so some investigation with claws was in order. An hour or so of sewing the next morning fixed it up.
photo looks as if it came from- what was it- Blues Brothers?
I’d like to see McAngry go after a member of the press who asks a question he doesn’t like…wouldn’t that be awesome? (assuming nobody got hurt)
Happened earlier today when a reporter, following up on the story, asked him if HE thought that getting shot down in a fighter plane was a qualification for the presidency—McBush lost it apparently.
All the more reason to permit an open and honest discussion of the pros and cons of illegal immigration. Yes, corporations benefit. No, regular workers do not. Construction workers in California suffer from wage regression. Anecdote: I once met a legal immigrant who had managed to buy two trucks and was running a nice little trucking business that was threatened by illegals who would do his runs with other trucks at slave wages. He was irate. And I got that. I also know legal immigrants who are horrified to see their neighborhoods ghettoized by folks renting out every room in the house — with cars parked all over the front lawn and all over the neighborhood. Their complaint: Not fair! Let’s have an open discussion without cries of ‘racism’.
The press can’t figure out why McBush went ta Columbia in the straight talk express. I figure it’s a coke run- but who knows.
So Neiwert, what is a constructive answer to all these domestic terrorist and hate groups?
Heh, don’t question his ‘qualifications’…! Do you have a link?
I have 2 Qs that I’d like to ask eiter candidate:
1. What is the most impotant industry in the U.S.?
2. What is your policy on the American Indian issue?
Both are short, polite, and never asked. The response to the first would reveal a lot about how the candidate thinks about the economy. Between W & Clinton, the great contrast was between old & new economy, respectively.
The second Q is a hidden bomb. Probably neither has even thought about it and thus their responses would show whether they think about U.S. history as manifest destiny or the sins of a settler economy. How they handle that dilemma would also show how they think on their feet.
I’ll have to look for it- back in a minute
Not to forget anti-unionism and free trade.
if we’re going to have an “open” discussion – let’s start with clinton’s fucked up trade policies that helped cause the problem and create immigration pressures.
and btw, imo migration is a human right.
BIA still can’t even begin to fathom how much they owe the Natives… They’ve screwed them over so long they can’t cope with the magnitude of the reparations… 8-(
You don’t live in my town. And, hey, can I migrate to Italy and just settle down? I loved Tuscany. Would there be any ‘rules’ about my migrating?
Dya think. I am ashamed every time I think about it. Reading those chapters of the book on the Gilded Age that I just finished was painful.
FYI, Ian is upstairs

Yup,it is McCain’s Republican territory up here in NH.
Funny thing, we don’t have many “illegals” sneaking over the border. It could be that the leaving of free healthcare and a strong dollar behind doesn’t have that much appeal for the citizens of Canada.
Of course hate radio blasts from every channel and pollutes our airwaves. No wonder the white supremacists are attracted to this mostly vanilla colored “live free or die” state.
Only 201 days, 15 hours ad 14 minutes left of this Bush crime wave left – but who’s really counting?
Clinton caused illegal immigration? Never heard that one before.
Well, let’s first have a discussion of immigration without the racism. So far the critics of illegal immigrants have not been able to contain themselves on that front.
David, I love your posts, but there is such a big difference between immigration and illegal immigration. Racism gets in the way of clear thinking on all sides. Let’s discuss — sometime — the problems with illegal immigration. Racism doesn’t have to be even a small part of the discussion. I’ve yet to see an honest discussion — someone always screams ‘racism’ —- but meat cutters in Nebraska and chicken pluckers in GA and construction workers in CA and on and on all have something to say, but they never get a hearing because someone already yelled ‘racisim.’
Golly, I thought the *g* wouldn’t be necessary in that context, but I guess in cybertalk, folks are never quite sure, so yes, please, plaster a *g* on that one.

i know you well enough to know that…. just had to say something though for the lurkers who might not.
Oy. A proper answer to that would take all night. But in a nutshell, there are two major components: A) Ordinary citizens standing up to hate speech, hate-group activities, and being counted in general; rendering moot, in other words, the oft-held belief of white supremacists that they represent the “unspoken will” of the community; and B) a rigorous law-enforcement approach that has no tolerance for bias crimes and a skillful intelligence-gathering component that respects their free-speech rights.
Again, that’s because so many of the people who presume to speak for those workers (see esp. Lou Dobbs) are in fact indulging in racism and the propagation of old racist-right bullshit.
Oy. My first intimate acquaintance with a certain young lady was somewhat spoiled by chiggers. My first introduction to the correlation between dalliance and pestilence.
Now, you don’t suppose there’s a lesson there about political infatuation, do you? Like, maybe, after dallying with Sen. Obama, the new Senate FISA bill is like getting chiggers?

I’ve had two family members (brother, and sister’s husband) helped me to move on different occasions, and we barely survived the ordeal. Fortunately, I’m still on speaking terms with both.

Okay, but some time in the future, let’s us do the discussion without the nazi lead in. I’d love to really talk about how to deal with the influx of unregistered folks and the plusses and minuses of their residency. Love your stuff. Be well.
Elwood: Illinois Nazis.
Jake: I hate Illinois Nazis.
I’ve had August pack trips in the early 70’s in Southern Sierra’s where it snowed at 9K when ’stuff’ rolled in.
Outside of both Wishon OR Cortwright Reservoirs.
I’ve also had it snow, 6 inches, at 11K, just outside of Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite Park, up the Lyell Canyon.
This was late June, um, likely ‘72 or so? And we were JUST off glaciated snow pack prior to a turn up to a saddle at 12,500 just off Lyell Peak.
If I was going above 10K in the Sierra, ANYtime of of year, I made sure I had snow goggles, iceax, rope, clothes and bag and tent that could HANDLE lo to mid teens and snow . . . . it’s just too easy to die up there.
We would always spend a day at 3-6K, then another day at 7-9K depending on where we were catching a trail head . . . acclimation was a must, even in my early 20’s . . . at 55, I can’t fathom going straight up to 10K, and functioning well . . . . much less heading out for any higher on foot . . . some of you folks in here are TOUGH old birds, still!!! *G*
Great memories of mountain times folks, thanks to all . . .
Of the topic, I can’t say anything nice about them folks, but I WILL say to those who would put BushCo’s Follies and our impending doom above racism, perhaps you could explain that to Medger Evers, Michael, Andrew And James, and the countless others of all colors (and whites) who have suffered from the likes of the KKK, CCC and WCC. And still do, to this day.
I will not abide that kind of personal belief when exposed to the public or upon someone in my presence.
What you do in your own home is your business. Bring that hate and bile into MY sphere of being, yer gonna HEAR about it. It should NEVER be tolerated in any way, shape or form.
It’s evil, and it’s thousands of years old in its forms . . . because we DO let it go on . . .
Harumph.
