The Republican Party in Texas is so awesome.
Texans would have to wait two years to get a divorce — unless they take a class designed to save their marriage — under a proposal a key state lawmaker says he plans to revive.
...
"The deal is, we need to take marriage more seriously," said [Warren] Chisum, who in October will celebrate his 51st wedding anniversary.
Who is Warren Chisum? A DeLay-style theocrat who wants to keep gubmint outta the way of big bidness (he's an oil man who once tried to dump nuclear waste in Andrews County) but loves to make intrusive, un-American laws based on his personal religious beliefs. He thinks homosexuality is a choice and has quite a few, shall we say, unusual views.
TO: How do you deal with language in the Bible that doesn’t fit our society, things like mentions of slavery?
WC: Yeah, you know you talk about slavery, and certainly there was slavery in the Bible, but you know it was for the slave to serve the master and for the master to be kind to the slave. It’s no different than in employment today.
Oh, and he's the chairman of the Texas House Appropriations Committee.
Quick! Someone ask the Republican Party's nominee for president what he thinks of this law. Did he have to wait 2 years before dumping his first wife for Cindy?

What if your wife has cancer? Will there still be a waiting period?
But the right to bear arms should be unimpared.
Not if she’s unable to perform her wifely duties.
Or what if you like to have prostitutes dress you in diapers? Does your wife have to wait two years to divorce you?
In RE Slavery - He might just have a point there.
Case in point: Wal*Mart locking the employees in the store at night.
No. She is supposed to help with the laundry.

How about if you father a child by your “other” wife. Do they both have to wait two years to divorce you?
OMG! I have a Texas divorce. Any provision for spousal support if the couple is separated during the two years?
I read that there is stronger “patriarchal” behavior in the average marriage today than in past decades since the women’s movement. This exploitive religiosity mucking around with hard won laws and protections is so upsetting. The authoritarian personality once again run amuck.
The cynic in me thinks that there is a new cottage industry providing Educational and Ethical Training for Marriages in Trouble.

Compromise: same waiting period for gun purchases.
Does this mean that you won’t be hanging out with the Central Tex Firepups during Netroots Nation?

Couldn’t afford it unless it was held in the Tampa area.
I have an extra bed and room on my couch, but only for lady firepups.
Let’s see now…if couples have to wait two years, I think we can say without contradiction that the chances of the woman partner of being sexually assaulted or murdered are increased significantly:
“Furthermore, throughout Canada, Wilson and Daly (1994) found that compared to coresiding couples, separation entails a sixfold increase in homicide risk for women. U.S. research also shows that separation is a key risk factor of femicide….Note, too, that data generated by the redesigned National Crime Victimization Survey reveal that separated women were assaulted three times more often than divorcedwomen and close to 25 times more than married women..”

Wow, if some good could come out of this, I hope you get a bunch of overdue money :)
Nope. All is said and done. And I did eventually get money to support me during the separation, 8 months after we separated. After I’d qualified for section 8 housing and food stamps. Don’t even ask what you have to do in Texas for spousal support to continue beyond three years, and spousal support only exists at all if you were married ten years or more.
Vitter should not be able to show his face in public without someone asking him this. Brilliant.
Yeah. I can’t comment further without cursing.

Unbelievable. No question as to who wrote those laws.
OT:
in last thread, just sayin, but it would have added credibility to say up front that the Mcsame violent confrontation during a diplomatic event was reported by mcclatchy, not some fringe outfit.
yea, I know, if you hit the link you could find that out. But I didnt and I found out when I toured McClatchy news service today.
just sayin….cliff is usually on point.
In the local media, where if it bleeds it leads, it’s estranged and separated women who are assaulted and/or murdered.
In the late 70’s I was involved in setting up the first safe house network in Oregon. The one thing I heard most from women was that they were afraid to leave because their husband would find them and kill them. If they stayed they figured their chances of survival were better. Their safety was our primary focus whenever we established a safe house. That network is one of my proudest achievements on this planet.

The answer is already happening: much less marriage and much more “shacking up”.
Eat THAT Mr Jesus!
I’m sure Texas and Alabama will get right on that.
with none of the financial or societal benefits of marriage.
Is it time for Texas to secede yet? Please? I’m willing to give it back to Mexico in return for Baja California. Or they could even be their own country and then we could embargo them for being so forking lame.
In the early 70’s, the brother of a good friend went to Austin for a week on music business. He got busted with a dime bag and was told to choose between the military or 30 years in Texas prison. He chose Nam and was killed in action. I hate Texas.
No offense meant to any of our Texan brothers and sisters, truly. This is my own personal V (for vendetta). (Where’s shark babe?)
Lose your snark tag?
Palimony is the answer.
For divorce, yes. For marriage no.
Someone should ask Chisum why he wants to protect gays from the horrors of divorce by preventing them from marrying in the first place.
I think this goes to the very heart of the question. So much of the drive to execute is based on the assumption of guilt and the desire for vengeance. The assumption of guilt says they don’t deserve competent (read: costly) representation, and the desire for vengeance demands a barbaric experience of both incarceration and execution.
Welcome to Florida.
what is it with Texas anyway? I grew up there…apparently got away just in time. Have to go back now fairly frequently because of mom’s health, but it takes weeks to recover.
I like the California way. We celebrate the wedding biz. Gay marriage? shorter time for divorces? good for the wedding biz!
Why, Betsy, you thought I was being snarky? I’m crushed.
Actually, I don’t think Mexico would want them back either. remember they were their own country for 10 yrs back in the mid19th century. Perhaps it would be best to return them to that status. then we could sanction them.
Support Noriega!
Show the world that not all Texans are like this asswipe.
As I recall from an article I read within the last year about the Maryland/DC area, the only factor that made it worse was being pregnant.

Limbaugh, the Heartland Hero host of what Drudge calls “the most lucrative hours since radio’s inception,” has a total package of more $400 million, according to media insiders.
The New York Times flagged the news to Drudge that Limbaugh, marking 20 years this summer as a national host, has secured a nine-figure signing bonus for the new deal.
In a “controversial profile,” the Gray Lady is reporting that Limbaugh is buying a new G550 jet and is making an estimated $38 million a year.
Betsy, ygm.
Big thumbs up on that. My younger daughter, when she was on a co-op for Antioch College, managed a safe house for Catholic Charities in Glens Falls, NY - and part of her job also was to accompany the women for meetings with their lawyers and to be there with them during trials.

I’ve read that.
What a nice civilized nation we are, no?
I have some thoughts about this that I won’t say in public. Or on radio.
There is a conditioning aspect…treat prisoners and convicts harshly, as object lessons for those who would get out of line. It is state terror, to a degree.
Don’t forget Stalin: “If we only punish the guilty, what will the innocent fear?”

If they’re so hot for waiting periods, how about a two-year waiting period to get married, instead? It’s forever, right? So what’s the problem?
cause, cause, cause …… they might want to have SEX while they’re waiting!
Privatization works, if you want an unaccountable secret police and domestic covert-action apparatus…
Oh, wait..
How about a two=year waiting period before someone can foreclose on you?
What if yer wife is beating you?
Would you like the phone number for a domestic violence agency?
Having lived in Tejas- I don’t think the state is gonna go for this bullshit- this guy may be about to hit the wall.

My favorite billboard in the Lone Star State was near Dallas:
The “liberty” these extremists understand is the freedom to proselytize their neighbors or to send them out of town on a rail, covered in tar and feathers. The freedom to accept or reject their religion is not freedom, in their eyes, but damnation, which they are obligated to prevent.
Theirs is not a mindset devoted to limited or less government or the separation of church and state or freedom of speech and association, all things are government is legally obligated to protect and defend. It is a mindset devoted to a larger, more intrusive and controlling government that implements their religious priorities.
Well, that’s one part of Texas, the other is best typified by a little house purchased by an Episcipal group and used for services early in the morning a block from the golf course so as not to interfere with early morning tee times.
I didn’t find Dallas to be a particularly religious community.
Happy Birthday, Warren! Ain’t it about time to retire and spend more time with your family?

I was thinkin of Willie Nelson- one of his wifes sewed him into a sheet when he was passed out and beat hell out of him with a broomstick- so could Willie get a pass on the two year requirement?

I’ve often gotten the impression, however, that Austin is something of an island; progressive, somewhat insular with a huge arts and music community…kinda like Gainesville, FL, although G’ville isn’t nearly as cool as it used to be.
(disclaimer: I have never been to Austin)
Austin is a great town..Dallas is actually a great town too– just plunked into some pretty ugly country..West Texas is different- but a lot more fun than ya might think—try Lubbock for a weekend.
This has absolutely nothing to do with anything worthy in the world. Just thought if you happened to need to hurl, here’s the guaranteed way….

I spent some time in Wichita Falls back in the day, and actually had to literally run for my life in Houston…I don’t blame Texas (my fault in both cases)-hoping Austin will be somewhat different.
I’ve never been to Wichita Falls, seems like it oughta be Oklahoma- I could never warm up to Houston- somethin about the refineries belching out foul smellin shit- and the locals doin the same into 90% humidity.
Hell, I wouldn’t move here either, it’s terrible! All hot and desert like. Cactus & steer poop everywhere. And the only decent Texans done moved up to Alaska…
I like Austin.
I refer to it as a liberal oasis in a vast redneck wasteland.
Perhaps you were there on Saturday night. I found it an amalgam of Landru, Stepford and Vegas.
I lived there for—well– about 15 years I guess.

I believe Mr. Chisum figured prominently in one of Molly Ivins’s many wonderful tales of goings-on in the Texas legislature. (I hope I’m getting this right.) Shortly after the legislature passed a billl (sponsored, I believe, by Mr. Chisum) outlawing sodomy in Texas, Mr. Chisum was seen to be touching the arm of a fellow legislator he was trying to persuade to vote with Chisum on something or other. Onlookers pointed out that this was illegal: “in the state of Texas, it is illegal for a pr**k to touch an a**hole.” Looks like Mr. Chisum is busy again trying to regulate the private lives of Texans.
Warren Chisum. Jeebus, haven’t heard that name in a while.
Molly Ivins had a great story on Chisum.
It was just after TX had passed a new anti-sodomy law. The debate was classic. Paraphrasing from memory, it went something like this:
“But Warren, what if I’m poking around in the dark with my wife, and accidently miss and end up in the wrong hole? You’d arrest me for that?”
“That’s right, Bob. It’s unnatural.”
Anyway, it passed. Afterwards, one legislator noticed Chisum shaking hands wih another supporter of the bill. He went up to them said, “You know, you guys can’t do that. It’s against the law in this state for a dick to touch an asshole.”
.
Dammit, Lynn, I did a name check on both ‘Ivins’ and ‘asshole’ before posting that story, and then you got there just before me.
Ah well, great minds etc.
.
This type of garbage raises it head every once in awhile BUT they NEVER speak about making a marriage license harder to get or requiring counseling before entering upon a marriage.
In any event I’m against both;simply stated, ‘government, stay out of my private life’.
Let’s see…2 month waiting period if your husband is beating you..Does it take that long to get to a GUN STORE?
I don’t think so…AMF!
