The "McCain Beat Up On a Sandinista" story continues, thanks to a denial from Senator John McCain. To recap, Senator Thad Cochran told the Sun-Herald this story yesterday about their trip south of the border over two decades ago:
"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerilla group here at this end of the table and I don’t know what attracted my attention," Cochran said. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever. I don’t know what he was telling him but I thought, good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission. I don’t know what had happened to provoke John but he obviously got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him."
Kind of a vivid image from the fellow GOP Senator who’s just recently been forgiven by McCain for this explosive quote:
"The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Cochran told the Globe. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."
Today, McCain was asked by a McClatchy reporter traveling with his party in Colombia about Senator Thad Cochran’s recounting of the story, and he had this to say (my emph.):
"You’re talking about 21 years ago? It’s simply untrue," McCain said. "Let me remind you: Sen. Dole and then-Sen. Mitchell appointed two senators – Sen. Dodd and me — to be co-chairs for the Central America Observer Group. This special group was appointed because of all the issues surrounding Central America at that time. I made many trips and had many, many meetings with the Sandinistas. There is nothing there. I must say I did not admire the Sandinistas very much. There was never anything of that nature. It just did not happen."
Seems like McClatchy reporters are going to sit at the back of the shiny new McCain campaign plane, along with reporters from the Gulfport Sun-Herald.
I wonder if McCain called the reporter a c&nt?

Hi Teddy
McShitForBrains
Teddy! Again!
I have it reliable authority that he mumbled it under his breath…
mcsame–remaking his campaign to put Bushco campaign man from 2004 in charge of his campaign.
no he aint bush II. he is bush iii.
Isn’t it an amazing coinkydink that the Colombian government arranges a dramatic hostage rescue with McCain in-country? Incredible timing, eh what?
His staff shakeup doesn’t really sound like much of a shakeup. More like trying to get their shit together. Put a Rove clone in for day-to-day ops and we have the Shrub/Barnacle campaign all over again. Who’d a thunk it?
TSF – burnin’ the candle at both ends.
Righteous!
There were a few mentions in coverage over the weekend that Grumpy McSame did not release all of his military medical records. I also heard an allegation on a lefty talk show that McSame was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and that he is on medication for PTSD, which could include anti-depressants. There has been a suggestion that McSame receives Social Security benefits, probably due to his age, but if he started getting Social Security before age 65, it may have been based on a Social Security disability claim. Why don’t we know about any of this?
gotta link on some of that, or any, or all? It’s very intriguing, but without a link it hardly rises above an allegation. And we want to do better than that, my friend.
Times said Davis told Krusty to replace him or lose. Nice way to pad your resume.
FARC has been holding these folks for up to 5 years. They might have moved up the date for the op but I’d imagine they’ve been working on this for some time. I don’t see a lot of cooperation going on between Uribe and FARC. No love lost there.
Here’s the audio of Thad Cochran’s meeting with the Sun-Herald.
Has the ring of truth to me, but he’s a GOP Senator, so who are ya gonna believe?
They do all seem to lie at the drop of a vote don’t they?
Just have to wonder if we’ll ever get a reliable lie detector to strap ‘em all to.
People who believe McSFB is capable of striking out will believe it and people who don’t, won’t. But ya can’t unring the bell.
Gotta go feed the squirrels before it rains again. bbl
You mean like McCain trying to deny he ever claimed to not know anything about Economics, no matter all the tapes around showing him saying exactly that?
Worthy of a digg if I might say so…
Crikey Teddy, who could have anticipated such a thing!?
btw, that illustration is downright creepy.
I’m sure the pressure’s on Thad Cochran now, from the GOP, to stfu, but I’ll be interested in what the SunHerald asks him about McCain’s clear denial that it happened at all. Cochran was for Romney in the primary, and then made up with McCain for his comments, but only very recently.
Cochran had to know what he was doing, but I wonder why. I bet Romney thinks someone can get McCain to really blow up before the convention, perhaps to his detriment.
That image is truely disturbing
Editor Dave is responsible for that. It conveys McCaint’s lying soul quite well, ya think?
it sure does!
I would be surprised if McLame was not diagnosed with PTSD after returning from his Hanoi stint. I don’t think that Navy docs were about to hand out that diagonosis too lightly, so I’ll bet in his records it’s something else (gee, shocking but that does happen… it’s not falsification, it’s “interpretation”) but John the Hero had to get a squadron of some sort to see if he was “promotable” to Flag rank. He did, and by all accounts did a good job with the A-7 replacement squadron at NAS Cecil Field, but not good enough to be competitive for advancement to Admiral. So he got shipped off to the Navy OLA (Office of Legislative Affairs) where connections to Ross Perot and Ronald Reagan stood him in good stead.
Looking at the official Navy records might shed some light on this…and unlike Preznit Deserting Fratboy, McLame’s records have probably not disappeared because he is (1) a retiree (2) still being seen for his injuries sustained in captivity (probably just checkups) and (3) his course of treatment probably required continuous records to allow proper treatment and evaluation.
So let’s see’em Senator, or is there something to hide?
Voldemccain?
Nah, Volderove and McFoy… :)
Financial Telegraph article predicts complete meltdown of U.S. banking system.
The article was in Dutch and pulled from further circulation.

Teddy, you are correct and I will try to find some links. The talk show allegation was on a Sirius Satellite radio channel (I think “Talk Left”?) on Saturday or Sunday, not sure if that show provides transcripts.
Meanwhile, Jo Fish @ 22 gives some knowledgeable backup about Navy medical procedures. It seems to be clear that McSame has not produced all of his medical records from his military service.
You have to go by motivation. McSame has an obvious motive to lie (and a history of doing so). Cochrane has no obvious motivation – well, unless he just hates McSame. Guess that’ll be the McSame response, eh?
:)
It may not be that McCain’s lying. He’s really old and his memory abilities are probably hazy at best. Of course, that’s also a good reason for him not to be President.
Jofish is all over it. I can promise you that as long as he is drawing that pension they have his records! Service Connected Vet speaking from experience on this, they were able to come up with a particular piece of paper from Tripler Army Medical Center ER from almost forty years ago with no problem. If they want to, they can find anything.
Apparently the Sirius channel is called “Sirius Left,” not what I said.
The show I heard over the weekend was Lynn Samuels’s show:
http://www.sirius.com/siriusleft
I can’t find any transcripts on Lynn Samuels’s website:
http://www.lynnsamuels.com/
Well, I’m all stocked up on popcorn, it’s only a matter of time ’till he goes ballistic in public. *g*
Thanks, Doc… ~ere!
Are military records that good? No one could ever find any evidence of Bush completing his service and the Republics were happy to blame that on the records. A brave Bush would never go AWOL so it has to be someone elses fault.
It’d be nice if it happens regularly. They may start sedating him to stop it, however.
…speaking of Colombian…
*Schweeeeet!*
Actually Badwater, they are. I think I read somewhere that Vietnam Navy POWs and Astronauts have the most complete medical records ever. The Navy keeps track of them to see how they are holding up over all these years and to see what works/doesn’t work wrt treatment etc…
Preznit 1st Lieutenant was in the Air National Guard, his family was politically well-connected enough to make sure that local records would not be found again, and since the TANG probably held everything it wasn’t too hard to just make shit disappear. It’s tin-foil hat stuff… but not really.
“start” ??
McCain seems very sedated to me.
my oh my! even Fox News is suspicious of the timing of the rescue
per Think Progress:
my bold
Those were Air National Guard records and there’s every reason to believe that portions of his records were destroyed. National Guard records are maintained in by the state National Guard.
The regular military has the service record of every person who ever served, with the exception of those destroyed in a fire in the old records center in St Louis. That’s how guys get medals in 2003, for instance, that they were recommended for in WWII.
Du uh now you wouldn’t be implying this was staged just for Johnny Boy benefit by Bushco do ya??? A little Summer surprise maybe!!
Whoa! (Massive Block Quote Alert)
There was this piece on Salon dot com in May:
http://www.salon.com/news/feat…..print.html
These two paragraphs appeared to contradict any claim that McSame suffered or suffers PTSD:
OK, who’s gonna swipe a hair sample for drug analysis?
The “McCain Beat Up On a Sandinista” story
McCain beat up a Commie
Then John helped Reagan end the cold war
Then John invented supply side economics
Then John taught at the School for the Americas
What hasn’t John done for the GOP?
(snark alert! none of these claims maybe true)
Perhaps McCain just forgot.
Hi Teddy!
See my comment @ 42. I shoulda done at least a few minutes of Googling before repeating radio crap. Sorry about that.
But I still think we need to see the Navy psychiatric records. Why not? What possible excuse is there for not making full disclosure?
McCain is aware of what happened but he just doesn’t understand it…you know…just like the Internet. He has his kids help him with it (assaulting & using the Net).
I’m familiar with reports of McCain receiving over 50k per year in disability pay.
I also can’t help but wonder if McCain didn’t call Cochran a liar just to keep the story alive.
FWIW, an active Naval Officer, desiring to resume his career after being interrupted for five and a half years as a POW would most likely have been very adamant in avoiding a PTSD diagnosis.
And I’m not real sure the term “PTSD” was in use in the ‘72-’73 time frame anyway.
That doesn’t mean he never suffered from it or may still feel the effects; just that it is a diagnosis that he would most likely avoid like the plague.
We are reminded yet again of the power of a Bush incumbency. Since McCain wants Bush’s third term, and Bush very badly wants him to have it in order to vindicate his “policies” we must expect even more over-the-top efforts like this.
I’m actually rather surprised Uribe didn’t have McCain go along on the rescue, or swap, or however the hostages were returned.
Unless FARC has been colluding with the government I suspect that this operation has been in the works for some time. Moving the actual operation date up to McSFB’s visit is highly likely, however. That said, they had to have been very close to doing this anyway. The French government has been hard on their ass to get her out of there. By throwing a monkey wrench into the efforts being made by Chavez in recent months I also suspect they had something going even at that time to show that Columbia was capable of freeing the hostages. This kind of operation takes a lot of work. It’s not done overnight unless FARC has been cooperating with the government. With the loss of its leadership FARC may be in disarray, making this kind of op easier.
Why the “unless”?
Do we even know that Lindsey Graham, Joe Lieberman and John & Cindy McCain didn’t actually rescue the hostages themselves?
Do we?
Because I don’t have any proof that they have. If they’re in such disarray that they’re now cooperating with the government that would be quite the feather in Uribe’s cap. I find it hard to believe that the 2 top leaders had nobody to take over that had the fervor they did. Or those 9000 fighters just got tired of living in the jungle and fighting government troops. We’ll just have to wait and see.
*groan*
If the release of those hostages was delayed for just one day to make McSame look good . . .
I heard Cindy McCain was too busy to rescue anyone because she was in a backroom somewhere talking with the Colombian drug-lords for a “stash” for the trip home on the company jet. See? /snark
Hey = where are the DIGG POLICE for Teddy? Please do so, now.
Hi everyone; howie has posted a VERY IMPORTANT Regina Thomas (GA-12) post – talking about how she is challenging the WORST blue dog ever. Could you please DIGG it (and my comment so no one buries it?)
OT on FISA:
Glennzilla vs.SullBambi :
No pics on teevee, more specifically, no pics with screaming headlines on Faux News.
I was being snarky. Sorry for not putting in a snark alert. Just that I wouldn’t be surprised that Uribe & FARC have been in cahoots. Nothing would surprise me after the last 8 years.
done!
and done!
Hope she brings me some of that Columbian Gold.
. . . the media will yawn and dig up something new on Rev Wright.
His physical injuries are likely enough to account for that, I’m thinking.
teddy-i have had a life-long aversion to the word c&nt. first time i heard it, i knew it couldn’t be a good thing…i think it’s the worst word in the english language. by far. for years have tried to stamp it out, when it started showing up here and other places because of mccain, i felt sinkholes forming for the human race that it would become a casual word….
but now, i am beginning to think differently. remember, i’m the mccain hater from waaaaaaaaaaaay back. because he two-faced. a sociopath. noone ever talks about how he is a sociopath. he is. watch him, listen to him.
so, c&nt isn’t the worst word anymore to me, i think McC&nt is the worst word, not mccain, mcc&nt, that’s what i’m gonna call him from now on….he’s earned it… i delayed saying that in public here for a month now, now, i’m sayin’ it, that’s his name in my mind….anyone that would call his own wife a trollup and a c&nt-there i said it again-in the same sentence is the worst kind of individual, worse than the word itself. and then add on the rest of his sociopathic acts…inhumane. no excuse of a human being. not worth the powder to blow him up-got that phrase from an old wise woman.
i brought up on the radio the other day for people to think about their high school graduating class……now, sure, someone has to be at the top and the bottom, but who was at the bottom? anyone you hung out with? my sister teaches english and she says and so does my best friend who teaches art–you have to work hard to get an ’f’…now, mccain graduated 4th from the bottom of the naval academy…how hard did he work to get an ’f’…..a ’c’ would beat the most 2/3rds down…..waddaya think his grade point average was? i don’t want someone for president that has less smarts than me, or works less hard at something, i want someone smarter than me, in some way…this man ’ain’t’ it.
a lotta people called in after that. in a good way.
boy, i had a flash of norske in that rant. what the hell’s wrong with me? lol /s
=======
p.s. why haven’t you joined the firedoglake readers group on flickr? eh? it’s really cool. so many different things.

i’m not a facebooker, but this? i’ve been havin a blast with it the last few days, click on my name for my page. not all the way organized yet, wide variety of things mixed throughout.
c’mon teddy, add your page, i know ya got one, cuz it’s bookmarked in my browser!!!!
ha.
I ‘m watching CBS w/ McCain on a boat “Witnessing the drug war”. More like “Another episode of McCain at sea!”
oops! that was for jacqrat’s #57
You raise a good point, nonetheless. While there’s no love lost between the two the loss of their top 2 people may have hurt them more than we know. FARC has been operating for what, 20 years? Uncle Ho fought the French and US for 30 years but had the North behind him.
’s
Is it my tin foil hat, or is it a little suspicious that McCain is in Columbia the day those hostages are freed?
New Ian up
Great news about Regina Thomas, jacQ. I added a comment and dugg yours up.
I think that’s right, and that LAT piece that Fern linked to specifically said the disability pension was from the Navy, so if McSame is also getting Social Security it is likely only retirement not disability.
But still, why no disclosure of psychiatric records? Especially if there are any records of *current* mental health treatment.
I just wonder what else is going to saved/fixed/ captured/ WTF… Who knows what else they are going to foist on the American people to try and FIX the Election for the rethuglians…. I do know one though we Pups won’t be swayed or impressed no matter what bushco does… Gee we may suddenly have a major plot in this country exposed…kinda like last summer just before the “Protect America Act: oops I mean the CYA Act…
oops — you beat me to it.
Note to all: ColOmbia, not ColUmbia.
Dam Haven’t seen any of that since I came to California… all there is around here is this green stuff /S
yikes, and I think I’m such a great speller!
Read my 51 and 54.
dakine at 49–i think people focus too much on his ’mental state’ after being a pow, and not enough on what it was before it……..sociopath, i’m tellin’ya, sociopath……so, being a pow, what would that do to a sociopath?
the dems are handlilng him all wrong, the guy is a sociopath.
My first taste was in LA in about 74. Learned how to roll a pinner that day.
i keep forgetting to add, i was married to one……..mccain’s all over it…..same kind of family histories….know it when i see it……dems need a different tactic with him than what they’re doing, watch him, the more he’s attacked, the more he turns it back, deflection…….he expects it. knows how to deal with an adversary. cuz everyone is an adversary.
someone’s gonna owe me a nickel.
Back in the day all there was Acapulco Gold Panama Red and some Mexican…. but it was $10.00 for two lids…. Dam Inflation:>)
That makes him perfect George the 3rd
You are more than likely correct… I have never trusted him in the past and will never trust him in the future… It was his Jet that started that carrier fire that took so many lives off of Vietnam… What I have seen reported he HOT started his jet and the resulting flames started the fire…. he is a worthless POS as far as I am concerned…
There was a guy in San Diego. I used to get kilos from him. His garage had no interior walls or insulation. The space between the studs was floor to ceiling kilos wrapped in red or green paper. No difference but sure was a nice looking garage. 1 kilo = $110.
Those were the Days
I sure do remember those days.
I doubt she’d share, SouthernDragon. LOL
It was the exterior fuel pod on his A-4 that started the fire. The pod was tagged by a Zuni missile that had launched from an aircraft behind him, causing the pod to detach, hit the deck and ignite. McSFB was lucky to get out of that alive.
He did call his wife a “c*nt” in public.
In KY, we could get a qt lb for $45. Then when I got to Hawaii, I could get the GI special (3grams sensi for $20 – you could get roughly 10 pinners from that)
::ears perking up::
wha??!
A karapukee film. Wow.
What was reported on the Military is that HIS Jet was hot started and that was what was set off the Zuni missile… At least according to some witnesses… just repeating was was said …of course there was nothing left to do the forensics on to prove any thing and he was transferred right after that…. you know Admirals son and all…
I can still roll a 0.7mm pencil lead with a Bambu. And it won’t fall out. That’s a pinner. *g*
Yes but the song was/is good…. who cares if the video is old and grainy it’s the music my friend:>)
Didn’t need to “move up” the rescue…needed to let McCain know this would be a lovely week to visit Colombia. Everybody wanted to know why go there now…now we know.
I always rolled Lucky Strikes piners were for siseys…not accusing or anything..
BRB Sweetie calling…
Oh, I wasn’t complaining. Just amazed that it was karapukee.
Same using single zigzag wheat/rice.
Rolling Luckies with that kinda dope was a waste of good dope. Still is.
I’m really fond of Bambu. Still have the little metal holder I got in 75. Got Bambu’s in it, too.
Yes we do.
And will Democrats make any hay of this? I’d sure like to see someone say something about it!
Just to be picky, it was a “zuni rocket”, not a missle. There was no guidance system. I have the tail assembly from one.
Mine was a metal, “Mr Natural No Waste Paper Case” from zigzag I got in ‘73 that held 8 pinners or five or so ez-wides.
You are correct. I called it a missile in error.
Mine is just a holder for papers.

Sorry mods, but I was only quoting the Republican candidate for President when I used the C word. Not one I would ever use myself.
Can’t indulge any mor ebut piners are all paper and no where near enough of the good stuff for my and my associates liking… If you are going to indulge then indulge:>)….

I’m one of the few women on the planet who isn’t bothered by that word when it’s used against me (the neocons call me it all the time), because I just figure I spoke some truth and the pansy boy couldn’t handle it, see? ;-)
Your paperz pleeze.
Ah, man, all’s I got’s a pipe.
jpl at 90–yep, that was mentioned in my earlier rant…..lol……
and weed? gimme a break…lol…first time i went to the theater where my new friend in high school worked, he ran the projector, his dad owned it, people were coming down the stairs with garbage bags……thought they were cleaning up from a party….nope…….
knew all the cops in town, they didnt’ care about weed.
later, cousin brought me some ti sticks from texas…..didn’t know he got them wholesale till he was arrested on federal charges with 2 mil in his car……fought the warrant all the way to the supreme court. lost.
he could do introductions for mcc&nt in colombia……one of them had a wedding a few years ago, where?
ohio.

and certain strains of weed were developed here by ou grad students, who went to jail for it. late 70’s.
many of the ones you’re smokin’ right now are from those plants.
they’re kinda famous for it.
meigs county weed.
Good sensi (like from the islands) pretty much needed to be in pinners unless you wanted folks comatose.
First time I ever brought some back to my hometown from Hawaii, I rolled a pinner for some friends. They were all poking each other and making wise. After they were all falling out and such. They learned real quick.
Well, this is almost the right picture. I have in mind the Roman god, Janus, who has two faces: one facing left, the other right. The perfect image for McCain. This picture, however, reminds me more of the Harry Potter film in which He Who Must Not Be Named survives on the back of the head of one of the unfortunate teachers at Hogwarts, concealed by a turbin, facing backwards, and exposed only at the climactic moment at the end of the film (Philosopher’s Stone, I think)

Now that brings back memories! They were freatured in The Rag, our local underground way back when…

Oh, I could have hung with your friends but you have to realize that this was late ’70s/early’80s and I was bringing finest kine Hawaiian bud to small town Kentucky where C-bo was the best they’d ever known.
Oops that was to nahant…
I would often sit out on the lania and smoke a small bowl but when that’s what you have every day, you do build a tolerance. For me, it often just put a nice fuzz around the crap.
I had a nice buzz for most of the time in the islands, including when I was meeting NCO boards for Outstanding Airman (which I won for the Quarter) and while taking classes to finish my degree. But I never parted my hair (when I had it) down the middle so I was not perceived as someone who used those dastardly substances.
