You can tell a lot about a person's character by how they respond in the midst of personal disasters. Darcy Burner, whose home burned to the ground yesterday, showed plenty by keeping a perspective on it all: reminding us all that no one got hurt and that the only things lost, besides her cat, were eminently replaceable.

What can't be replaced is the time and energy she is losing right now in her race to unseat the execrable Rep. Dave Reichert in western Washington's 8th congressional district. And that's where the netroots come in.

Progressive bloggers are pushing to help. Initially, everyone's impulse was to set up a fund-raiser to help her family. But Burner's insurance is likely to cover the house and belongings, and besides, there are likely a dozen federal statutes that would make donating to her personal account something of a legal problem.

But Darcy's at a critical juncture in her fund-raising efforts, and the fire takes her out of the long hard work of drumming up the dollars. So bloggers are trying to help fill the gap: David Goldstein has been spearheading the effort, which includes a special Blue America page on her behalf. Kos put up a link, as did Atrios, OpenLeft and Dday. And there's even a special HelpDarcyBurner page that gives folks a chance to pass along their sympathies to Darcy directly.
