Hey there, Log Cabin Republicans -- how's the view from under that bus?
John McCain’s position on California’s marriage amendment has officially switched from supporting the voters’ right to define marriage as they see fit to endorsing efforts to prohibit same-sex marriage by amending the state’s constitution, according to a statement by the Log Cabin Republicans.
All those secret meetings—even the Governator's opposition to PropEight!—and you boys still couldn't get your party's nominee to stick to his original position on the California Anti-Marriage Equality Amendment.
At its recent national convention in San Diego, Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon was able to get Schwarzenegger to say on tape that he opposes the constitutional amendment.
But, today:
A statement released Tuesday by the Log Cabin Republicans read: “Late last week, the group pushing California’s anti-marriage constitutional amendment released an email from a McCain staffer saying the Senator backed the amendment. We now have confirmation that this represents the Senator’s view.”
LCR president Patrick Sammon noted in the release that supporting the amendment is inconsistent with McCain’s belief in federalism. “Unfortunately, his position on this amendment hurts gay and lesbian families. We obviously disagree with Senator McCain on this issue and do not believe he should have interjected himself into this state issue,” Sammon said in the release. “Backing California’s ban sends the wrong signal to the independents who will decide this election because it creates the impression that he’s pandering to social conservative leaders.” McCain also held a closed meeting in Ohio late last week with social conservative leaders, around the time the news statement appeared on ProtectMarriage.com.
In a Politico opinion piece also published today, Sammon made clear the risks GOPs face when using marriage equality as a wedge issue.
In 2006, the five Republicans who used marriage most prominently as a wedge issue all lost. Sens. Rick Santorum (Pa.) and George Allen (Va.), Reps. John Hostetler (Ind.) and Anne Northup (Ky.), and Ken Blackwell (in his race for Ohio governor) tried to win with anti-gay campaign tactics. They didn’t necessarily lose because of their tactics, but these tactics didn’t prevent them from losing, as they might have a decade ago.
Support for marriage equality is growing. Pew Forum polling shows a 6 percent increase in support for marriage equality in the past four years. A recent Field poll in California showed 54 percent of respondents opposing an anti-marriage constitutional amendment that will be on the ballot in November — an initiative Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger opposes.
And many who oppose marriage equality support civil unions — nationwide, combined support for allowing marriage or civil unions for gay and lesbian couples approaches 60 percent. It’s only a matter of time before the law treats all families equally.
Sorry, Log Cabin Republicans, but—once again!—your Presidential standard-bearer is just not that into you. Are you going to sit this one out, like you did in 2004? How will you feel, working to defeat PropEight while John McCain tells the Haters he's all for it?

Teddy, you rule!
Gee, McCain flip-flops to support the haters. Now whoever would believe that such an honorable man would do such a thing?
Hah! As I said last night, the Log Cabin boys and girls have to be deranged. Backing the Rethugs is ALWAYS a losing proposition for members of the LGBT community.
Well, don’t tell me that anyone here is surprised.
No one here is surprised at all. I guess we just forgot to put the close snark tags up.
“Backing California’s ban sends the wrong signal to the independents who will decide this election because it creates the impression that he’s pandering to social conservative leaders.”
umm, Mr. Sammon, it’s not just an impression.
McCain also held a closed meeting in Ohio late last week with social conservative leaders, around the time the news statement appeared…
hmmm, maybe he *is* qualfied to be president. He’s already mastered the “lie in one state, and get the hell outta Dodge before they figure it out” gambit.
Why does John McCain hate Americans?
Feel free to quote me.
hey teddy - they can’t say they were not warned
Evening Teddy… Log Cabin gays…. what are they thinking of smooching up with the rethuglians???? They will never get them to support their rights as they should be!!
Here is the Digg folks so you know what to DO!!
dugg and thanks nahant for opening it
Hi all — yes, they were warned, Suzanne. I expect the LCR got the message in their private secret meeting with McCaint last week: “Now boys, I’m gonna have to throw you under the bus when I meet with the evangelicals later this week.” And the LCRs must have said, “Please, sir, may I have another?“
Log Cabin Rebublicans = John McCain’s disabled first wife. He’ll drop ‘em like a hot rock when someone spicier comes along. They’ll learn the hard way, so to speak.
Seems its what I do best /s
And, hey, like First Wife, I speak kindly of my ex husband because we have children. If we didn’t have children I would really trash the bastard with enthusiasm and wit.
You’d think the Rethugs would have reached hypo-critical mass by now on “family values/traditional marriage” thanks to McCain, Gingrich, Foley, Craig, Vitter,…
and yet republican morals are always touted as superior to our dfh morals
LCR’s:McCain::FourthAmendmentFans:Obama?
Only difference is that LCR’s had much more warning. End result is the same pain.
Don’t let the kids stop you… it sure didn’t stop me… of course not in front of the kids:>(
Ouch.
Hey pups you are doing great 20 min and 9 diggs….
*g* — what First Wife should admit is that she got money and her life was made easier. That’s not nothing. Hypocracy is just so BIG with the Rights. I’m always amazed that we liberals/progressives can’t seem to shine an apporpriate light on that…….kindly, with humor, but honestly. Truth. Truth. More Truth. Sunlight sanitizes, as they say.
Time to make dinner catch with ya all a bit later and Neuro if you are lurking get the shovel out and keep the digging going:>)
I’ll wait til late, late — but someone be prepared to explain Digg to me. I’ve registered twice and then when I go back after verifying through email, I’m dissed. If it means money or honor to the Lake, I’m all over it —’cept I can’t seem to get into the club. Thoughts? see me at late, late.
Sounds like cookies…
I count 12 diggs
I like cookies.
I wonder how many newsrooms have this programmed as a macro in their computers:
Oh, them kinda cookies…
Gotta admit digg took me a while to acclimate to.
This is a campaign to get elected president of Ohio- on BOTH sides….yer gonna see pandering that’ll make yer skin crawl
Froomkin chats live tomorrow at WaPo0 at 1pm eastern.
Questions accepted anytime.
The Rethugs appear to me to be outta steam - at least here in the communities of the central CA coast in general and the Monterey peninsula in particular. The Republican ladies club attendance has been declining steadily for the past several years and few if any new memberships reported the first half of this year. My favorite non-democrat neighbor has had a Ron Paul yard sign up up since January. I’m rather fond of her and won’t be surprised if she supports and votes for Obama. Our mayor served in the CIA and will never disavow the Rethugs publicly but privately she is reported to be “embarrassed”, as well she should be.
if Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was LSD, then LCR is Lucy in CA with Regret
Hey! You remember how one of the Roman gods was Janus, who had one face looking left, and another face looking right?
Someone needs to get a profile view of McCain, and then photoshop it into a “Janus.” Should come in handy in the months to come.
Bob in HI
((((((((((nahant))))))))))
I’m sending that one over to driftglass. He’s our man for that kind of editing.
After due diligence, (kind of), I still don’t understand who the log cabins are. Are there members of congress who are log cabin types?
Yo, Teddy,
how goes the nuptuals? Should I spring for that crappy toaster yet?
Oh, hello from Jamestown, NY.

Dearie,
You’re right, absolutely. I hadn’t stopped to consider how grateful McCane’s first wife would be to be rid of him. And with money to boot must be a bonus!
OFG!
Hey, I got the toaster, according to the registry at Black & Decker.
That was a quick response!
dont forget the congressman fron staten island ny…… ya know - the one with 2 families……..
“Log Cabin” Republicans are gay men who are Republicans. It makes sense if you want to reduce government interference with private lives, which is not a republican option.
Heh,
I use the term “crappy toaster” loosely. I have my eye on one at Sonoma and Clarke. The only toaster on the planet that costs four hundred dollars. Best be some mighty fine motherfucking toast.
Nothing but the best for Teddy.
Actually it only makes sense if you are willing to sell your soul from some marginal tax cuts. Seems Beezelbub got a whole bunch of cut rate souls there.
Thanks for that report! Your area has been republican, I’m thinking! (I’d love to live there! This is the most beautiful piece of planet earth I’ve ever seen.)
Where’s LS?
There are no longer any out gay GOPs in Congress, now that Jim Kolbe of Arizona has retired. Only closeted GOPs remain in Congress, and they aren’t in the LCR.
The LCRs are like any other party club, with members and chapters all over the country. Like the Harvey Milk Democratic Club here in San Francisco, except also self-hating, since they are GOPs.
Sorry, off topic
Going through some old threads and I happen to have a coupl’a links I’ve saved that are handy for Boo Radley in Christy’s thank Feingold thread
Here
We are currently “living in sin” which has a wonderful 1950s quality to it, I think. Previously, we were just sinners, I guess, but now that marriage is legal and we aren’t — well, I guess “living in sin” will have to do for now.
Two incomes and no children. Hmmmm. You are right. As for me, I am getting rich from the Bush economic miracle, being a supplier to an addicted nation. I am not a hedonist, however.
Yes. When all is thoroughly decided, you will need to do a gift registry to which we can contribute!
Also delusional.
I am sure you are right about their motivation being economic, but it seems to me that they have sold out their brothers and sisters for far less than 30 pieces of silver.
Brings to mind one of my faves, Bernie Kerik’s first wife. Scandal 12, 13 or so - once the flood gates opened. The unnamed one with the “overlapping marriage”. None dared say bigamy.
Official explanation: They agreed never to talk about the marriage, thus he was an honorable man by never disclosing it.
HA!
The Log Cabin folks, is there a masochism powering this society? How many times are you guys going to get tripped into a mud puddle before you figure it our? Either go back in the closet or find a new party affiliation.
I was pleased to read their statement, though, as it referred to McCain’s policy “hurting gay and lesbian families.” It’s not a stance I’ve seen from the LCR before, so it means they are coming along. Just not fast enough.
paul thorn has a song out on his new cd called ‘aint living in sin no more’ - you can play at your wedding
I asked my cousin and his partner about the LCRs and they said that when the LCRs are mentioned everyone in the room starts yelling - they detest them.
Okay,
I am a gearjamming, double rough tough bona fide Oilfieldguy, but it pains me, really, that the state is standing between your wishes.
I like you Teddy, and I bow to your good judgement as to whom you choose to share your life with. This shall be.
The Log Cabin members I know, maybe twelve or so, appear to be attracted much like business folk who join their local Chamber of Commerce. Not necessarily activist members, rather like average dues paying civic networkers. Of course I live in the not so populated coastal provinces between SF and LA. We went from long-term Leon Panetta (briefly a Republican) since reformed of course to long-term Sam Farr, a good lifetime Democrat.
Perhaps a bit less delusional that in the past. I think that this may be an issue that opens some eyes now that marriage is rapidly becoming a real possibility for them. After all, there are economic benefits to marriage as well. ;-)
because he is a republican, a neo con, a “bushy”, a corporatist and a maggot who thinks getting shot down and captured is somehow representative of good judgement
Hey, Oilfield guy —- just recollecting that I lurked for you! :)
Hi ‘brat! What does one call a dozen LCRs? A blazer of LCRs? A topsider of LCRs? A Mercedes of LCRs? A countryhouse of LCRs?
Monterey peninsula…gorgeous and the aquarium a definite Prairie Fave.
and juslin@43, ah, yes, who could forget ol’ whazzizname…Foselloshit.
hey perris - you decided to run and for what office? or have i missed the announcement??
There are the “iceberg” types, only 10% shows, the other 90% they keep under the surface, kinda like Larry.
Teddy,
Since is your thread I figured I’d ask a question. It seems that FDL has directed a significant amount of energy toward the Washington Post.
Why is that?
You always slide in the comments about open questions to Post writers and such. Please describe to the firepups the need for focus on Debbie Howell, who she is and Fred Hiatt and who he is and why we should care.
Continue with the evolution of the WaPoo from left to right (Nixon) and why this really matters to those dedicated to the progressive principles.
This may need to be spelled out in an above the fold frontline piece, but I have been reading FDL for years and this blog merely nibbles at the edges.
The whole sordid story needs to be laid out–white hats–black hats and all, in linkable fashion to the progressive movement.
Great post Teddy!
Thank you Dearie,
And for those other lurkers out there, come forth and ask something or tell something. We are in this together.
I don’t want no fatnin’ cookies. Do I have to accept cookies in order to honor FDL?
Cookies? Where? The snack fairy didn’t make it over to my place today.
I gots some brownies y’all might like…
let me guess - you got the recipe from someone named alice
If Digg is losing your identity whenever you leave the site, could be that you’re not accepting theirs.
But I’m a Mac guy (keep my secret, please).
And while you’re at it, Teddy, could you please explain what the FF that always accompanies Fred Hiatt’s initials means?
Dr. Bong, I’ll take a brownie over ‘ere, thanks.
An early night for me. I hiked 9 miles this morning and I’m beat.
Brownies all around!
I’d say I did a “Heckuva job on ‘em”
;~P’
That’s an excellent idea.
My primary objection to current Post kowtowing to The Regime and Villager memes is that the newspaper in the nation’s capital should provide exactly the opposite: it should be full of Dana Priests and Dan Froomkins and Gene Robinsons, those who question and investigate and highlight the foibles of the government, regardless of the party in power. Instead, though, it is populated largely with Fred Hiatt and his admirers, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, and David Ignatius: people who never hold The Regime accountable and, in fact, demean and denigrate those who attempt to do so (the DFHs).
On top of all those errors, the younger generation of reporters venerates David Broder and Tim Russert, prosletyzers of imaginary Villager bipartisanship and faux outrage. Ask any young Postie on a chatz-thread who s/he most admires, and it’ll likely be Broder & Russert. If not Sally Quinn.
Worst of all, though, the person tasked by the publisher with holding all these people accountable to readers, The Ombudsman, is, in the person of Deborah Howell (long-overdue-to-exit-her-two-year-contract) a management toady and apologist of the worst sort.
I hardly ever put chatz announcements in threads anymore, except for folks we like to send links to, like Froomkin and Robinson. The others, especially Media Critic Howard Kurtz, just aren’t worth it. For example, here’s my exchange with Mistah Kurtz just this morning:
The primary media organ in the nation’s capital should not be a toadying apologist and courtier for The Regime — it should constantly challenge the government and other DeeCee media outlets every single day. Mrs Graham understood this. Her son did not. Perhaps her granddaughter, the new publisher, does. I hope so.
You are right, though — this deserves a larger discussion, on the front page, and I will certainly think about putting it together. In the meantime, though, for a clear calling-out of Village tropes at the Post and elsewhere, what Digby said always serves me well.
no, gladys… kravitz
bet you dint know, huh?
gosh i knew i liked that nosy neighbor (laughing)
oooh, i’ll have a brownie too, please….
(And Mommybrain, I don’t know what FF stands for officially, but I always read it as Fucking Fuckface Fred Hiatt. Or would that be four Fs?)
I belive “Fuckface” qualifies as one word.
(just driving by really quickly, on the way to bed)
I think I’ve seen “Fact Free” associated with the FF here before…
perhaps he was named that so he would have an out with the draft board being 4F and all
OT: For those getting concerned about Obama’s actions and words over the last week or so, you might feel better after reading this:

Al Giordano delivers one of those posts that sticks with ya for a long time, like several FDL articles have done for me over the years. More and Better! (we got yer back, Darcy!)
McCain is an angry man who call his wife a c**t and his best friend forevah is Linsay Graham. He is a confused man. He is a dangerous man. He is a pandering man. I could go on but won’t.
It is a constant refrain these days…! ;-)
Aloha, Late Niters…! *g*
WT has a great shot of the whole murderous krewe in South America today.
Everybody remember to digg before you bail

Former Secretary of the Army David Packard’s daughter Julie, a Marine biologist, founded the aquarium and made me a true believer in karmic justice and Saul Alinsky. At the time I was organizing a grass roots campaign opposing PG&E’s 10-year old plan to building a supertanker port at their huge central coast Moss Landing plant on Monterey bay. We called ourselves FOG and actually beat those corporate scamps & sent them packing. The hero of the victory was Colonel John Adsit of the US Army Corp of Engineers. We presented evidence to him of the previous ten-year-campaign of lies & manipulations of the applicant’s nefarious scheme. Adsit’s office deferred what we feared would be a rubber stamp approval so his able staff could invesitage our claims of chicanery & damned lies throughout the decade-long drama. The good Colonel killed the project, was sent to the Pentagon and eventually retired with well earned honor. Then Congressman Panetta, who had been oh so patronizing and useless to we FOG folk, redeemed himself and followed with creating a congressional designation making Monterey Bay a Federal Marine sanctuary. Ha!
Where’s Charlie…? Btw, what does HoJo know about SA affairs…? ;-)

Lordy. Lordy. What a sick upperclass, seventy-ish, rigid, conservative gaggle of fuckwads. When do you think that last time any of those sort of humans had sex? I mean outside of a public bathroom.
From the FDL newsbox, there’s this little story from Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran (he who once said ‘The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper, and he worries me.’):
Well, at least we can always depend on Cindy to wear muted colors. s/
Heh, heh….
Vote McCain, he’ll punch a Sandanista.

Great stuff, Teddy. Give thought to the gravitational pull to the right, which is in diametric opposition to views. See Donohue and the fall and rise of MSNBC, since Olbermann. Which point to a different path if you follow market forces as Republicans deem we always should. Note the decline in Faux News viewers and a similar increse in CNN and MSNBC, as the country turns left. Note the declining circulation (as defined by the lack of quality control by their product) of WaPoo and other publications dominated by wingtard columnists.
I know this is a Media Matters type project but I think it is time for the gloves to come off. Let’s pick a fight with WaPoo, tell the firepups why this is important, a long list of grievances, and sick the rabid lambs of the left on them.
They have yet to feel the full sting of our lash. Teddy is our bus driver, fell free to take notes.
Doesn’t sound like he looks into anyone’s eyes and see their soul, does it? Just the scariest man.
oh no, Teddy with a lash. This won’t end well.
Car industry tanks in June:
GM down 18%
Toyota down 21%
Ford down 28%
The only thing muted about Miss Cindy is her brain. Can’t even get a good lie together about a cookie recipe.
