I watched this hearing on c_span this morning. Very interesting. I especially liked the pannelist from Isreal talking about Isreal’s new legislation to become oil-free. The one item I will mention here was the conversation between Rep Edward Markey of Mass. and the pannel where they simply stated that the US has only 2% of the world’s oil reserves and we use 25% of the world’s oil. No matter how much we drill, we can only access 2% of the world’s oil. It is mathematically impossible for us to drill out of the problem. they offered many great and economically feesable solutions. I recomend watching this hearing.

You demonstrate your ignorance of public lands management, not surprising for a person living in the big city. Among other things involved in permitting (as in issuing a permit) a proposed activity on public land, Public land management agencies are required by law to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, and the American Antiquities Act of 1906. This is typically very involved and is always time consuming. The Bush/Cheny regime has essentially mandated that the BLM prioritize gas and oil permitting. Because of budget cuts the BLM (and other land management agencies) have almost impossible workloads, and they would not likely be able to comply with permitting requirements for solar or wind electrical facilities by 2010. So really the moratorium on permitting solar facilities is how Bush forces the BLM to concentrate on the backlog of oil and gas permitting, which has come about as a result of policy decisions by the B/C Regime.
Also, there is plenty of private land on which solar electrical generating facilities could be located, and I suspect there are plenty of landowners who would be willing to lease some of their otherwise unproductive desert land for the purpose.

The White House sees the progress in a particularly positive light, declaring in a new assessment to Congress that Iraq’s efforts on 15 of 18 benchmarks are “satisfactory” — almost twice of what it determined to be the case a year ago. The May 2008 report card, obtained by the Associated Press, determines that only two of the benchmarks — enacting and implementing laws to disarm militias and distribute oil revenues — are unsatisfactory.

Blue TX: Your headline is just so great. There is the omitted tag line that would say something like because he is so clueless and dumb and hardheaded.

I think what he represents is quite scary along with all this stuff that is being revealed. The world knows we have been torturing and gaming all these people around the world. There is not doubt W has the judgment of a retarded sociopath. He after all laughed at the role of executioner he relished while Gov of TX. We indeed are in dangerous hands. It is altogether possible that McC would/will pursue the same dangerous blunders.

I am not generally “scary”, but we are in a whole new world, I guess. Writing yesterday about Sr Bush calling for impeachment of his son was not just a lark. His may be the only voice in the situation that would be heard. I think he knows what horrors his boy has wrought. Along with Cheney, of course. There is no natural law that the US has to be leader, superpower, etc. We may be well on our way to taking a back seat. I hope that does not sound disloyal. There are times and seasons; ours may be changing.
