There's quite a bit of wingnut pearl-clutching over Wes Clark's rather mild comment over the weekend about McSame's military service. In their two minutes of hate, they seem to have conveniently forgotten what Karl Rove did to McSame in 2000 to get The Great Leader elected.
... Bush surrogates (several later involved in the Kerry swiftboating effort) skillfully turned McCain's service record against him (thereby deflecting questions about Bush's own service record.) They planted stories that the torture McCain suffered as a POW had brought about mental instability, including rumors that he had been programmed as a "Manchurian candidate" who "collaborated with the enemy." No longer could McCain use the fact that he had endured torture as evidence of dedication to serving his country.
...
In the 2000 South Carolina Presidential primary Bush surrogates circulated stories that McCain's five years as a POW had made him "mentally unstable," gave him a "loose screw," that he "committed treason while a POW" and "came home and forgot us."
And McSame blamed Bush for this crap -- personally:
In a barely controlled debate that revealed the depth of their mutual anger, Gov. George W. Bush and Senator John McCain lashed into each other's negative campaign tactics tonight, with Mr. McCain lecturing Mr. Bush that he ''should be ashamed'' that a surrogate had accused Mr. McCain of abandoning veterans.
Mr. Bush refused Mr. McCain's demand that he apologize, instead insisting that Mr. McCain stop impugning his integrity. In seething, indignant accusations, each man tried to portray himself as the victim of gutter politics, with Mr. McCain saying he had been called everything but a fascist.
''You're putting out stuff that is unbelievable, George, and it's got to stop,'' he said. ''And your ads have got to stop.''
So to recap. Peddling vicious and false smears about McSame (and John Kerry, for that matter) is perfectly fine if you're Karl Rove and George W. Bush. Raising a question about McSame's qualifications, while effusively praising him as a "hero"? Totally out of bounds if you're Wes Clark.

yeay!!!!! Did mcStupid do anything else in the navy besides being a POW? Did he plan missions or wars or anything?
Wes Clark said that just because Mcbush got shot down while flyin an airplane doesn’t give him any understanding of geo political issues
Obama came out soon after saying that he doesn’t support Clark’s statement.
HUH?
What disappoints me is that the MSM is feeding into this crap! I saw the interview and he did not dispute his patriotism or his heroic deeds. He simply said that being shot down did not prepare him to be president anymore than anyone else. The Clark team told Andrea Mitchell to read the whole transcript this morning on MSNBC.. Whatever happened to truth in journalism or is MSM nothing more than talk radio.
McBush has been very consistent in sayin that he doesn’t like it when people say bad things about him.
I have PTSD also and I bet it’s in my records at the doctor. Was mcStupid treated for that? Did he do counseling? Do weird things still creep him out?
Yeah, they’re throwing around the word “Swiftboating” which is absurd.
Seems to me that Obama has a case of rabbit ears—
Yep. The irony, and audacity, is like thunder.
Okay, I’ll bite. He’s a fascist. There, it’s been said.
Stupid question. What is pearl clutching?
huh?
Imagine an older lady of delicate sensibilities, wearing a string of pearls, hearing shocking news in her parlor.
Wes Clark seems to be a Republican, and would have formally affiliated with that party had Karl Rove returned his calls.
did mcStupid do anything in his career to make him a good commander in chief? Or just getting shot down and being a prisoner?
well, I hear that he has a nasty temper and a dirty mouth…
Thats almost everybody in the military.
OT: It’s often said that Democratic presidential campaign advisors write the best concession speeches in the business. How’s this for LAME:
That, and he crashed 5 planes. Which probably endears him to the military suppliers…
Actually if you had heard him speak about economic issues, you would have known that is not entirely true. He’s a strong supporter of the middle class and knows that it’s dying in this country.
Hiya, Cassie! How is Cornell? (You’re there now, correct?)
Question for McSame. Once elected, will he be looking to hunt down OBL “dead or alive”? just like his precessor. I would like to hear his response.
LOL!
That statement sounds like something from… uh-oh!
Obama should have said that Clark has never questioned McCain’s patriotism only his qualifications for President.. Maybe Obama should read the damn transcript also.
not the ones I know.
:)
The Obama camp seems to think it can ride its 5 point national lead all the way to the White House. Four months is a long time to play rope a dope.
Obi has made a lot of weird statements. He’s hard to figure out.
McCain is using Swiftboater to beat it back - yep, the very people he condemned for this in 04

Unspoken by the campaign, but probably in the background, is the fact that both his father and grandfather were admirals of some repute. McSFB was an ordinary pilot with nothing to distinguish his service other than being shot down and held captive for 5 1/2 years. That’s not meant to diminish his ordeal in any way. When Raven was around we’ve had many discussions about McSFB’s military service being out of bounds unless something the military would have taken action on came to light. There was a lot of talk about his crashing a number of aircraft but as far as I’m concerned that’s a non-issue and not worthy of discussion. Those “crashes” occurred either on the flight deck of a carrier or on the ground, not in the air.
Can campaign commercials be made from material from the Bush vs. McCain primaries?
Whether Republican or Democrat, will it ever be possible again to maintain separation of state and military in presidential politics? To me, the main thing Obama has going for him is his lack of military service (so-called). The Pentagon doesn’t need another advocate. It’s needs to be brought to a state where it can be drowned in a bathtub.
As long as the US pursues an imperialistic foreign policy former military figures will have influence in politics and run for public office based in large part on their military service. The low info voters are reassured when there’s a former military type in the White House when the US invades such military powerhouses like Grenada and Panama.
I don’t see why not.
Bush has demonstrated that it’s worse to pretend to have a military record than to have no military record.
Next week. I am still with my grandparents doing tourists stuff in NYC. But granpa is at the dentist now and I am just hanging out.
He crashed a lot of airplanes.
There’s a petition supporting Clark at VoteVets.org.
but noone likes bush anymore
Afternoon, Cassie — how are things?
I think the idea is to quote McStupid in a “then and now” comparison to show why his colleagues in the Senate call flip-flops (the shoes) “McCains.”
What the fuck is wrong with Obama? Dean, Clark and Edwards need to take him out behind the woodshed and forcibly install a spine. I know it’ll hurt, but it’s for his own good.
good, but today is the first day since my cousin went to see his other grandparents. Kind of weird here without him or my aunt betsy
do you have a link? I could not find it.
Clark was sent out to say precisely what he said, is taking his medicine like a man, and will be rewarded for his sacrifice.
Someone had to say it.
obama has a spine and he shows it by standing up to the base of his party.
Hannibal , my aunt is getting plastic rubber stuff but into her spine to make it stronger. They inject it where she has damage.
Is there such a thing as a triple-strength snark tag?
Don’t but it’s www.votevets.org. Sorry
I’ll give him the last two. Sitting in his aircraft and being hit with ordinance that was not his and being shot down might not have been his fault, but the first three most definately his,
In the NYT today in the column called The Caucus, Jeff Zeleny writes about Obama’s speaking tour. He refers to “Senator McCain” and then to “Mr. Obama.” I sent him a comment about his bias.
I met your aunty at eCAHN’s get together - I think she was scoping the DH and I out to make sure we are ‘ready for prime time’. :)
Clark spoke the truth, and I’m glad this is getting lively discussion on the blogs, but there’s too much Vapid Vapors Media controlling and spinning this into a false narrative.
I said at my homeblog and it bears repeating, the only ones dishonoring McCain’s service and years as a p.o.w. are those who are exploiting that now trying to get a Third Term of Bush.
The petition can be found here.
Good on ya. We must all remember to speak out beyond these lake waters.
<p class=triple-strength-snark>What Selise Said<p>
she told me she added you to the list if people who can visit me in the weekend at cornell. And take me out for the afternoon. You, David from Canada, and my grandparents.
Ok then, I’ll show my spine by ignoring his latest fundraising plea.
I think he volunteered to say it– how many times has he argued against war and ”only, only as a last resort”?
(What confounded me is that the Senator from NY is pretty darn hawkish and he backed her.)
I’m thinking that the DLC/DCCC/DSCC have inserted a lot of their favorite operatives into O’s campaign, as ‘advisors’ or as actual ‘working’ members. The campaign should have checked their records more closely before saying yes to those guys. (I’m not sure I would have put Clinton’s people directly into top management, either.)
I’ll email you — once you know your schedule at Cornell, you can pick and choose…
forgive me Blue Texan - but about those fabled foreign policy/military credentials -
link
do his messaging folks ever speak to one another ?!?!?
LOL. thanks! as newtonusr noted, i needed that tag.
ok. My aunt liked you a lot.
isn’t it more important that mcstupid is running on his military service but he won’t take care of soldiers and vets now?
I don’t know, it’s par for the course with him. When has he ever shown any real spine when it mattered? Sure, he gave a speech against the war, but how about since then? The guy’s a skilled politician, but a hard charging progressive? Not so much.
Not to the MSM. McWalnuts! is infallible in the vacant minds of the vapid talking heads.
Thanks all for the vote vets info. I did my part.
To anyone who is a thinking person, yes…
Obama seems to be caving in on himself bit by bit; they got to him.
Aircraft are damaged on the ground and flight deck all the time, both by pilots and flight crew. If it were serious enough he would have faced a courts-martial or at the least have his flying status revoked. The issue is not worth discussing primarily because it proves nothing. It constitutes a hollow attack. Throw in his womanizing and all ya got is his womanizing.
Agreed. More damaging to the attacker than the accused, and rightly so.
or maybe he ran a bit to the left in the primary and now he is reverting to his true positions?
could be
He was a soldier in a war that history has proven to be debacle of foreign policy. It’s the oldest trick in the book to use martyrdom as a mechanism for bellicosity; so let’s say it again: he has been consistently incorrect about the War in Iraq, has no working knowledge of the various players in the middle East, has no plan for withdrawl, no definition of victory, no plan for either paying for the adventure there, nor a plan for restoring our military readiness there. Again and again the left should demand that he explain to the American people his willingness to put the cost of the war on the backs of our children and grandchildren while pushing to privilege the upper classes with continuing Bush taxcuts and to put our soldiers in excessive danger for having no viable plan for increasing troop readiness. Mc Cain needs to be put on the defensive at every turn on these issues.
This is a brilliant way to strike back agains the right-wing hissy fits. It’s complicated to explain that being a POW isn’t exactly experience as a commander and how that isn’t an attack on patriotism. And who says we need military MEN–is this a junta? But this is much better. I plan to use it early and often.
We know it would be the third W term…qualified, you see.
Hersh talking about W “obviating the Constitution” along with expanding Presidential powers and sabotaging “oversight.” Isn’t this fun? Let’s them send troops anywhere without telling anyone about it….And That’s Our World.
Someone should ask McSame if he will rein in Mercenaries in Iraq like Blackwater or if it’s going to continue to be murder…er business as usual?
Oh, right that would be rude.
