Happy LGBT Pride Month! To celebrate Pride, last week presumptive GOP Presidential nominee John McCain sat down with his party's LGBT group, the Log Cabin Republicans, in a secret meeting.
In a get-together not on McSame's public schedule, he met with members of the Log Cabin Republicans. Gee, why wasn't this a big public event -- you know, to help educate the rest of the LGBT community about John McCain being down with the homos, that he's "unashamed, unembarrassed and proud" to associate with the pro-marriage equality gay organization?
To educate non-self-hating LGBTs and all fair-minded Americans, Stonewall Democrats put together this video about McCaint's "association" with LGBTs. In addition to the items outlined in their video, McCaint has recently made clear his support of the California Hater Amendment that will strip marriage equality from LGBT Californians.
I support the efforts of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman, just as we did in my home state of Arizona. I do not believe judges should be making these decisions.
I suppose the Log Cabin Boys had to meet secretly not for McCaint's sake, but for the sake of their still-closeted members: nothing says self-hate like having to meet with your own party's candidate in secret, does it? And nothing says that hate's reflected right back at you like having your nominee come out in favor of the Hate Amendment immediately after your secret meeting.
Senator McCain has gotten credit in the gay community for his opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment due to federalist concerns. This argument might even have won over other conservative Senators, like John Sununu (NH), Chuck Hagel (NE), John Warner (VA), Richard Lugar (IN) and Ben Campbell (CO), to defeat the amendment. But if McCain would support California’s state marriage amendments even though Governor Schwarzenegger opposes it, the facts are clear.
Just as with a woman's right to choose, confusion is McCaint's ally. When women learn he's a forced-birth proponent, they steer clear. LGBTs and their allies must understand that McCaint is no friend of our community. McCaint opposed the hateful Federal Marriage Amendment because he thought it imposed on states' rights -- but that is no reason to think he'll be any friend of LGBT folks. In fact, as the Stonewall Democrats show, every time he's had an opportunity to support our community, he's voted NO. Every time he's had an opportunity to stand up for LGBT people, he has sat down. Every time he's been asked to speak up in favor of civil rights for LGBTs, he's been silent.
John McCain: Bad for LGBT Americans, bad for ALL Americans, bad for America.

Hi, Teddy.
Teddy!
Hi Teddy!
TTTTEEEDDDDDDYYYYY!!!!!!
I just had to shout that!!!!
Hi Dearie, you’re posting the first comment quite regularly today! Great Book Salon today, yes?
Hey Teddy! Give them hell! I have to say that I have never understood the Log Cabin Republicans. Talk about voting against your self interest ….
Hi neuro, hi Christine, hi MATT!
McCain is old-news, old thinking. Not good for any of us. But, gee, I had to learn stuff and I’m hoping others will grow along with me.
Teddy!
Wait wait! Is he a …. a …… a ….. a flip flopper?
Or senile?
Hi Teddy!
Digg!
Hey Teddy! How pathetic it must be to be a Log Cabin Republican. You know your party hates your guts and wants you dead. But still you hang around, groveling about for some tiny scrap or crumb from the banquet table. Those at the table keep kicking you into a corner, but you just keep coming back for more misery. What a crappy way to live.
So, the Log Cabin Boy/Girls got together with McBrush and He saw it their way right? Forever hopeful bunch of Rethugs-not-wanted-by-the-Rethug Party.
Dr (pause) Dick, my understanding is that these gays like the economic policies of the GOP. In other words, they consider themselves to be voting their own self-interest from the lower-taxes standpoint.
Mostly, it’s a few rich gays among us. Although most of the gays with wealth are Democrats for obvious reasons, a few others “vote their wallet.”
Also, it’s easier to be closeted if you are a GOP.
Only in a log cabin closet.
Who are these log cabin republicans and how did they choose their name?
Like Mark Foley and Larry Craig?
Hiya newt!
Yes, Betsy, I am afraid Old Lord McCaint likes the beach footwear, if he thinks he can wear it into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Of course, with our guy’s FISA vote this week, we’ll lose the moral high ground on the flip-flopping accusations….
More pix of me with the east coast firepups. And all of the food from last week.
A two day break has done me good.
Whatever happened to the Colorado preacher man who did drugs and had gay affairs?
He got cured! Straight as can be now.
Hmmm. Sounds depressingly like they have sold their souls for a little spare change.
Didn’t he announce he had successfully completed “gay rehab”?
He’s quit the five year re-programing plan and move back to Co. Springs. He’s healed! Sing hosannas!
Wow, isn’t it the truth?
Our California LCRs did manage to get Arnold to say he would oppose the Hater Amendment, but we’ll see what actual work Arnold does about it.
Arnold had an interesting statement on “Meet the Press” today with Tom Brokaw:
What are the goals of the Log Cabin Republicans? Do they really think they can make a difference with someone like McSame?
Mmmm, strawberries, corn on the cob and jelly donuts. I think that covers all the food groups!
And Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell and Patrick McHenry and David Dreier….
the list goes on and on….
Oh, great photos! Thanks for sharing. Wow! That is wonderful looking food.
Daddy?
Oh dear god! Please don’t go there.
And fine looking firepups if they ever decide to attach their names to their photos!
I’m singing, sister!
Hi Teddy Partridge and Firedogs -
meanwhile,
Michelle Obama Says Husband Will Fight for LGBT Equality
not holding my breath (that whole civil unions thingy doncha know) but hey, at least she did it out in the open
Funny you should ask! Pam had an update about that this week as well…
I almost wrote about that instead tonite. Do I know what Sunday Late Nite readers crave, or what?
Also, JoeMyGod has a comment:
So what then, really? I just don’t get it.
Yep! I enjoyed chatting with Rep. Wexler. I’ve watched him with joy…..speaking out, speaking up. We could use a few more of him! And I’m lovin’ the Lake. Finally kind of retired. I’ve been lurking since the get-go…..now I can actually participate. Great. I met a Repub. in Bozeman last weekend and asked him why he was voting for McCain. He was kind of embarrassed. Admitted that he was following his dad…..really not thinking for himself at all. I didn’t press him…..would if I saw him again. He had his young daughter with him, and I wanted to, but didn’t, ask what he’d do if she were raped and impregnated. One of my old time Catholic friends once told me that she’d make her daughter have the baby and then give it up for adoption. I said, ”My god, that would be your grandchild!” Strange how people think.
The Nation Magazine’s Loving McCain by Eric Alterman and George Zornick has this tidbit:
Charles Lane (The New Republic) admitted, ” I know it shouldn’t be happening, but it is. I’m falling for John McCain.” His declaration followed that of Michael Lewis, who, in the same magazine, compared his feelings to “the war that must occur inside a 14-year-old boy who discovers he is more sexually attracted to boys than to girls.”
Repiglican economic policies?
What an incredibly beautiful setting. Kind of a mini Woodstock, huh? What? No bands?
ew! (and not good professional journalism either)
Great Photos Betsy!
Great sound system with speakers on the porch and inside the house.
Thanks. Most are mine, but a few are from SanderO.
Got me. As I said above, I just really do not get the Log Cabin crew. Teddy is probably right about the economic policies issue, but it seems to come a horrendous cost for a really marginal return.
Oh. Money. Now I get it.
They do? ;-)
Dr (pause) Dick, my understanding is that these gays like the economic policies of the GOP. In other words, they consider themselves to be voting their own self-interest from the lower-taxes standpoint.
Lower taxes? but the war is an expense which has to be paid for and McCain is not talking about how he will pay for it, like by raising taxes even more than if we cut our loses now.
Maybe the Log Cabin Republicans are as confused about tax policy and economics as they are about the interests of their own sexuality?
Have the Log Cabin Republicans seen the DOW lately GOP economic policy is like believing in magical thinking at an Atheist convention.
That love of money above all else can really make you sell your soul to the evil being of your choice.
And the meth. Don’t forget the meth.
I thought most of them took matters into their own hands.
No, he just can’t remember what his position is. /s

It’s a way to meet wealthy gay men and, let’s face it, gold-digging ain’t limited to the ladies — John McCain himself being the perfect example!
Have to say it never occurred to me, but YMMV.
No Lieberman at his side?
Literally…! 8-P
True. Knew more than one fellah looking for a sugar daay when I was in Chicago. Just do not understand that mentality (in men or women).
Looking at those pictures is a shock it seems we dirty Lefty Bloggers and Commenters are just regular middle class Americans. In other words we really are Karl Rove’s nightmare!
Bwahahaha!
The meth made him ‘Do It’…!
Dr D, when Cassie first started out hanging out online, she proposed marriage to three men. Fortunately, none of them took advantage. She was 14.
That should be “sugar daddy” not “sugar daay”.
Tax Cuts. They buy the Republican bs - security, smaller government, privacy rights, lower taxes, make your own way, bootstraps, leather, rubber suits, etc. All lies.
Plus, there is the selfishness and lack of concern for anyone but themselves - as long as they can live their own lives unmolested.
Are they growing members or shrinking?
No kidding. Imagine having a compass that makes RGJoe look like needed help…
So that rules out reaching, say, a certain senator from South Carolina.
More pix. This was my weekend (yesterday and today) visiting Gnome de Plume and assorted Gnomelets.
My kybrd does tht to me smtimes, to.
Yes, but that was a confused and troubled adolescent, not a grown man. We all do really stupid things when we are young like that. With her turbulent background, I am sure she was just looking for love and stability. Fortunately she had you to help her through all that.
She was looking for a daddy.
I swear my fingers are dyslexic. ;-)
Hey, Teddy, do you know any Log Cabiners? Is it just about getting ahead for them? Why else would they choose to support folks who clearly do not support them?
Again, that was a troubled adolescent. We hope that people grow out of that and learn to cope in other ways as they mature.
true enough.
it does appear that people will vote against their own interest or protect their pocketbook by staying in the closet…
log cabin boys-hmmmmmm, self-flagellation maybe?
i know someone who beats that….this one owns a closet of ’hairshirts’.
i know a man in his early thirties, converted TO catholicism, teaches religion at a catholic high school, gay and republican……..
one of my favortie people to talk to, theory, etc……could talk to him for days as long as it’s not politics…..we talk religion though, he was a philosophy major…..that’s what led to teaching religion.
converted catholic, teaches religion in a catholic high school, gay, republican……just doesn’t mix….he’s gotta be a bundle of angst under that thoughtful demeanor…….
my friend who sees him more often said he has been doing some in-depth reevaluating this past year, hope he’s turning toward the light…..i so hope so.
David E’s Fablog is enlightening in this regard. He names names over there. Good pictures too.
What would McCain promise the Log Cabin Republicans in exchange for their support? What have other GOPer Presidential Candidates promised them in the past, Government Contracts?
And “it” made him do the meth?
Jeff Gannon Guckert?
God, maybe…? ;-)
Yeah, he “remembers” when he’s with Joe.

We had a long conversation about this a couple of years ago with Pach on a Sunday night thread. Yes, money is a factor, but there’s more to it than that. Being part of a powerful in crowd that does not want to extend the same kinds of privileges to just anyone is also part of it. It’s probably a bit like the Skull and Bones set. They are the keepers of one another’s secrets and there is an elite caché about it too.
It’s a kind of special DeeCee insider’s club. Of course they are rethugs, it just fits the mold.

I think Opes Dei that weird group Supreme Court Justice Scalia belongs to (think the movie/book DaVinci Code) is the only Catholic Group that still indulges in self-flagellation.
I think the rest of the church gave that up in the middle ages. Why Opes Dei brought it back I don’t know why the Pope let them bring it back well…?
I don’t know any, but I’ve known some guys who’d qualify: rich, selfish, Reaganauts who’ve drunk the neocon koolaid. Also self-hating — did I mention that part?
Anyone who’d join an organization whose platform is essentially dedicated to them remaining second-class citizens is, well, unwell.
That or some private face time with Bush!
It’s a vicious cycle.
Isn’t it Opus Dei…?
perhaps to beat the gayness out of them?? just a thought……….
Hey, RevDeb — happy Pride!
OT but not—and jane started a flickr page for firedoglake, kathryn in ma posted photos from ecahn’s gathering, too. quite a few people have joined in!
you don’t have to be a member to look at the sites, and i put one up, too….. : )
been wanting to do it for a while, so, this pushed me to finally get out the camera someone gave me a while ago, and posted some other stuff on there, too…tonight posted photos from my friends’ garden/yard, it’s where i hang out the most, at their house…….even posted some of my fire photos project i’ve been working on for a while….they’re not blown up or retouched…..it’s been fun….it’ll be better organized as i get the hang of it.
i so enjoy the firepup blogs and photos people post that i thought i would let people see what it is like here, too….

The phone numbers and email addies of all the closet cases in the GOP?
I’m sure your right I’m at best a non practicing unconfirmed Catholic!
Sad, really. Not so mentally sound, if you will. But probably fitting for a certain kind of self-interest. But, oh, don’t ever turn your back.
I can’t imagine joining a club that would have me as a member.
No I think that you are right a normal sex drive denied I’m sure can turn violent.
Plus there face book Pictures!
excellent point
I’m having trouble with that. I can find d128 but I can’t access the fdl group.
Isn’t Larry Flynt still offering a cool $1 Mil for that kinda info…? ;-)
Btw, he’s been awful quiet of late…
Hi,
I heard about this site on C-Span last night.
If you have Comcast on demand or access to it please watch Crude Impact (Sundance)…it is on the free movies until tomorrow. It is the truth about why our families are dying in the middle east and why we have to be vigilant about who we elect.
Tag, you’re it. (watch the movie and you’ll understand).
The priest as pedophile syndrome didn’t happen by accident. It’s all of a piece.
Hey Teddy!
I hope it’s a happy one for you and Patrick.
Me, I’m still so pissed off and deflated over FISA I’m having a hard time wanting to engage at all. How much longer do I want to go on feeling like a battered spouse with the dems as batterers?
and I”m sure Uncle Tom’s Cabin discussed this with their “good friend”
. 6/08
and not a peep from the bastid about moral waivers in recruiting known gang bangers and other felons
Just joined. But I keep most of my pix on Picasa, which meshes nicely with my gmail accounts.
You’re a central Texas firepup, aren’t ya?
*whispers*
scotus
(but you knew that…)
I think there is also a bit of self selection involved there (and in other religious communities). I think many of these people were deeply religious, but had urges and desires that they felt were more than just sinful. In response they embraced the religious life and dedicated themselves to God, hoping he would protect them from themselves.
Aloha, welcome to the Lake! Don’t be a stranger! Always a pleasure to ’see’ new faces and ‘hear’ new voices…! 8-)
