Evening ES be right back…
Aloha, ES!
retroactive immunity
Gee Teddy’s post is keeping every busy…
Well here is a Digg for the Post!
Good evening , CT
Dugg
Filth
Dugg!
Thanks nahant!
This is tragic!
Oh man…
hmm, the video won’t play for me
got a link, Eureka?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOql8F_6ac0
Hey Eureka, hey everyone…can’t sleep, thought I’d hang out here for a bit.
Nice song!
Hey CT @10, I heard about that crash earlier; the news here said that authorities weren’t letting any news crews anywhere near that scene. Must have been awful, and a hell of a scene to investigate.
Headed for the news box now.
Tragic, for sure. Why would medical emergency helicopters be in private hands?/s
SUre, one sec.. Here’s the entire new Al Green album (if you include songs on left of this page)
Thank you, nahant
I have an understatement award to hand out:
A significant problem, the study says, was the lack of detailed plans before the war for the postwar phase of the conflict, a deficiency that reflected the general optimism in the White House and in the Pentagon, led by the secretary of defense at the time, Donald Rumsfeld, about Iraq’s future, and an assumption that civilian agencies would assume much of the burden.
Twas nothing Es… happy to help out:>)
Finally, somebody had the moxie to say it…
What, McInsane, the truth hurts…? ;-)
Neuro what browser are you using tonight??
Even more significant.. the lies which led us into it!
Suz taking a hiatus, LM? ;-)
So nice to see you, LL. You’ve been away, working hard?
Shhh! We can’t talk about THAT in a newspaper!
Clark throws a wicked elbow.
Ladies and Gentlemen – your nominee for Veep.
Some excellent family time. She will return tomorrow night.
Thanks ES, so nice to see you too :-)
A combination of the two; working hard, and taking a bit of a break from the toobz lately.
Bedtime for me too. Medical procedure tomorrow morning. Only 6 needles into the spine this time!
Suz deserves it… she always hosts a great late late night!
Why does the word NADER spew forth in my mind when you say any military persons name for VP? *g*
G’night Betsy, sending good thoughts your way and I hope the procedure goes well for you…
I sense a battle royal going on in the blogosphere and elsewhere for the soul of the progressive movement.
The “pragmatists” believe that, to get elected, it is necessary to pander to the “cowards,” i.e., those who wish to trade their and others’ liberties for security.
The “purists” believe that it is wrong to trade liberties for security under any circumstances and will do what they can to prevent it.
The “clueful,” e.g., Glenzilla, realize that any attempt to pander to cowards is harmful to progressive candidates. Cenk Uygur eloquently expresses that view, with which I heartily agree, in this video.
If you like to argue such things, check out this Dkos diary.
Two words:
Big.Shoes.
I cancelled all premium television this summer.. If it weren’t for Moyers and cspan.. I would put my tele in the closet. Giving up the toobz, may require rehab. *g
Only Six??? Hope they help Betsy…. I get to spend my day at Standford Medical till 8PM… will be under the microscope and what ever else they can think of…
I hope he throws a few more…! He wouldn’t be a bad choice for Veep, it’d certainly burnish Obama’s military and foreign policy creds, Clark was once NATO’s CinC…
LL! Hugs and happy to see you. Making you a nice
cuppa tea.
c(_)>~~~
Yeah. The ones in the springtime were 13 each time. Now we’re down to 6.
That she does…! *g*
Glenn and Digby were at thier best today.
Nite Betsy!
I’m not a big fan of Clark. But his electability is off the charts, IMO.
You think? It would be a safe choice, military credentials and a former Hillary supporter. Really smart guy.
Aw thank you ((( Margot ))) !
Hang in there, Betsy. I haven’t seen any NYC meet up pics yet.
One is one too many…! Pain free sleep wishes, M’dear! *g*
here they are: http://picasaweb.google.com/Te…..-6thXTEXgc
I’m luke-warm to him, too!
Yippee, thank you!
Electability is the thing – either Obama picks the best person to be the Veep,or he picks the best electoral assist.
I don’t see anyone who provides both.
I don’t know that Clark would be a great Veep, and I don’t think some of the really bright Veep candidates help him electorally.
Quayle ring any bells…? ;-)
Sometimes less really is less.

Hey ES, not trying to steer the conversation away from the veepstakes — but are you into the Folkways sound at all? Lately I’ve become fascinated by Dock Boggs…
Evening, Mary! Describing his brain, eh?
yep.
How are you CT?
What’s the latest prognosis? I remember being so happy to hear about your good medical news.
I like a lot of old hillbilly music.. only catch bits and pieces of it here and there. Isn’t Folkways a record label?
LL, since when do we ever stay on topic during late, late nite, anyways! How’s Virginny?
Sending you all good thoughts – hope you can have water and some nourishment along the way. (((((nahant)))))
LL, since when do we ever stay on topic during late, late nit
yeah, what CT said.. *g
Fine, fixing to call my two Senators and chew’em out for voting yea on cloture, in the morn…
There’s a topic?
Smithsonian, actually :-) Should have worded my comment better. I listen to a lot of “The Village”, on XM, and they feature a lot of this kind of stuff.
I trust that Clark is a good guy. I’d prefer to see Hillary herself, rather that a Hill supporter though.
Indescribable…
I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican.
Dan Quayle
I have made good judgements in the Past. I have made good judgements in the Future.
Dan Quayle
People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history.
Dan Quayle
Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child.

The Old Dominion is hot and dry lately, CT — the grass here is getting parched! We keep seeing these fearsome looking thunderstorms on radar, but they weaken as they go over the mountains and bypass my area completely :-(
I hate that word-cloture. Sounds like someone has something stuck in their throat. cccloo—turre
The original Bushisms…! ;-)
thanks, nahant
Gave up tv a few mos ago, back to books big time. Love having unwelcome voices out of the house.
Kinda says it all…
Toast = VA
Burned Toast = Norcal
!988 and Quayle was the clarion-call to America – that in 2000, the Goopers were going to cough up a bigger hairball – Chimpy.
We weren’t listening.
Agreed.. Would seem rude to not go with Hillary if Obama picks anyone as or more conservative than her or her supporters. Pick a progressive or pick Clinton for petes sake.
Aw Mary, I’ve been hearing about how bad it is out your way — praying for some relief for you all…
Yes. My TV has been limited to Olbermann, and I’m enjoying that less and less. I may give up the TV the same way I did my land line.
For me they say again now the c word so I am will be going through the full evaluation for transplant of liver.. scanned poked prodded scanned again poked again… had to answer a whole bunch of question about how I feel and think and all sorts of stuff all tomorrow. At the end of July meet the whole transplant team at Stanford including social workers, psychs, docs of all sorts and again who knows what else… As for my lady she is doing great today after Angioplasty last Friday… Well I guess
This one goes out to all the politicians.
Until you just said that I didn’t think of it that way, but now I have to clear my throat.
What do you make of big Bill Clinton’s tantrum on Obama – I wondered if he is simply incapable of restraint or simply incapable of accepting the reality Hill lost the election.
I must say, Obama and Hillary sure looked great together the other day in NH.
I am using Opera. I have finally figured out how to click on a video link in an FDL post, then listen while I open a new tab for FDL.
One problem, though. Earlier today (yesterday) I tried to open my AOL e-mail account and it would go to the mail page, but the space where the e-mails are supposed to be listed would be blank. Haven’t checked back to see if it is still doing that.
foreshadowing a hair ball.
Who would have thunk it?
Heh, this is a memorable saga…
And he stands behind ‘em all…
Priceless…!
Hugs, hugs, and more hugs.
Oh ((( nahant ))) Healing thoughts to you.
Gave up AOL long long time ago…. You do know what the letters stanf for don’t you???
Assholes On Line!!
Hi NPB. I have heard the rumors about Bill in a tizzy, but haven’t seen any well-sourced material. Have you got something?
Even if it’s true though, it’s kinda showing a sweet side of ‘ol Bill. He doesn’t want anyone stepping on his wife!
best wishes to Betsy and nahant with their med procedures. hope any pain or discomfort is minimal.
Best of luck, big guy! My thoughts and prayers to you and yours…! *g*
wow. ok.
Laura D. could use some of our collective thoughts and prayers too — I believe she is scheduled for hand surgery on Monday.
LL, you probably know of Jean Ritchie. I have an old ten inch record of hers. (Kentucky Folk Songs)
Thank you LH & LL and all the late late night Pups… We ARE family even if we are all a long way physically apart… I see that almost every night here! And not just for me but for all the great pups! I should be alright… if you have to have this happen Stanford is one of the best places in the world to be/have on your side..
What a freak accident! Never a dull moment…!
what e-mail do you use?
Okay, I have been the xone of trying to do 1) practical stuff and 2) fun stuff.
Practical: I found a link to a site, followed some advice there, and my OLD PC is running faster and better:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm
http://www.blackviper.com/
Fun: Dogs that Surf!
http://www.latimes.com/theguid…..ry?index=4
I know, right? Sheesh, poor thing :-(
Laura took pains to note that the fish are ok, though. Sounds like Laura.
Wow.. I always caught bits and pieces of hints about health troubles, but didn’t know the whole story. You sure keep up wonderful spirit. I’ll be sending some good thoughts your way, nahant.
Yea. Only he can do that. He stepped on her with Monica and who knows who else. He is a schmuck.
ES, Jean Ritchie is new to me — wow, that is some good stuff!
Scratch my surface a bit and you’ll find some hillbillies named Warden who made their way from Appalachia out to MO and KS. I love that style of music.
Exactly! ;-)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newst…..pport.html
Do you have dogs too?
Oh Nahant! My thoughts will be with you. Hugs.
Well need to catch up on some of the sleep I missed with my ladies stuff and tomorrow I will need to have my wits and what ever else I need together…
Sleep well all of you and will see you next late late night and please bring your shovels and do the digging the Lake needs for the support that makes this such a great pl;ace to hang out…
Night Night all:>)
That reminds me of this… ;-)
bill at 3 hunters dot com
Positive waves through the air from south california up the beaches to Stanford.
G’night nahant, rest well, and we will be thinking of you!
nite dude
sleep well
Aloha, nahant! Best of luck…
Hugs Nahant. Let us know how things go, please?
I have thought throughout the primary season that perhaps Bill sees Hillary as a mere surrogate for himself…a way to get that coveted third and perhaps even fourth term, and assumes he would play a big role in it…but then, my estimation of Bill has been somewhat lowered ever since the truth about the Lewinsky business (i.e. it happened) came out.
are you from KS, LL?
/snerk
No, no dogs. But, I stumbled on these really great pix of surfing dogs, after following a link in the newsbox at FDL- I think it was the Hatfill article in the LA Times. I have surfers in the family (CA) so I had to check it out. The pictures are hilarious!
neuro, no — first generation Northern Virginian, here. My dad was born in KC MO, and all of his side are from MO and KS.
oh, thanks, I just meant e-mail service…
I really hope things go well for you tomorrow (and for your wife as well)
Wow, Obama should promptly tell Bill to kiss his…!
neuro, I need to add — I am familiar with Gates BBQ ;-)
Saw that, the worst picture of Bill Clinton ever. Plastered (of course) on Huffpo today too. (Huffpo is always an interesting study of finding the worst possible picture of any presidential candidate other than Obama.
I’m an Obama supporter, and hosted an event with 30 people for him yesterday, but let’s get real. Huffpo has turned into a tabloid. The headlines rarely reflect the real story.
Bill went round the bend this year, possibly left the farm altogether. I don’t remember where I read it, but one article suggested his heart surgeries could have played a role.. Something has definitely gone awry.
((((((nahant)))))
That is a good thing to be familiar with! I lived in the KC area for a few years and always appreciated their offerings.
This weekend, went to the KCK Street Blues Festival, which was great, and bought some ribs from a vendor there–also great.
Ok, I get why this woman is being charged, and I get why they took the dogs away from her. But what I don’t get is why they want to put the dogs to sleep!
Seriously fucked up news.
Yep. At the very least, his political instincts have eroded.
And he now seems to have the patience of a 12 year-old.
ES, you probably know about this, you too LL, but just in case, Child Ballads info here.
After heart surgery men had a really hard time. I was told this by a surgical nurse when Ron had his surgery. Your brain thinks that you have died. It takes awhile to over come the physical and mental effects. You are a changed person forever. For someone like Clinton to feel that vulnerability it could be the beginning of a dwindling personality.
I’ve read that heart surgeries can play havoc with one’s mind, although IANAD (I am not a doc). If Kirk were here, maybe he could elaborate.
Not to be rude or needlessly provocative, but if Hillary weren’t Bill’s surrogate and if Barak hadn’t given a masterful speech at a previous convention, who’d have thought of either of them for this year’s candidate? Hillary carpet bagged NY and ran Nita Lowey out of her turn; Obama comes from where based on what? We’re in for some interesting times.
Ok, this one is just damn funny!
That article said, “The Telegraph has learned that the former president’s rage is still so great that even loyal allies are shocked by his patronising attitude to Mr Obama, and believe that he risks damaging his own reputation by his intransigence.”
risks damaging his own reputation
he damaged it with me pretty early in the campaign. regardless of the family ties, I think a former president should behave with more dignity than he did.
of course, G.W. boosh is about to give us all a whole new understanding of how a former president can act with no dignity…(beginning Jan. 2009)
Good night all.
Good luck tomorrow Nahant. I will be thinking about you, Betsy and Laura.
oo thanks Margot, bookmarking :-)
g’night Mary McC, rest well.
Always be sure your researchers know what they’re doing.
Maybe Hillary’s lose is bringing up memories of being treated like shit by the repugs. Perhaps this is misplaced anger.
New to me, thanks Margot.
nite mary
I’d love to get back out to visit KC and environs again; haven’t been out there in 30+ years. Would love to make a road trip of sorts with my Dad.
omg! I actually watched some of that match; had no idea that the wrong lyrics were being sung!
If you drive to KC, ES is a perfect place to pass through on the way.
Ha! Hopefully you weren’t singing along. On the other hand, the Olympics still engage in a tradition started by the Nazis, the Olympic running of the torch.
FWIW I’m sticking with Obama too and probably a little too fascinated by Bill Clinton’s oh so public snit dissing the winner at Hillary’s expense. Course, Bill’s sense of entitlement strikes me as oh so ironic cause it clearly appears, real or imagined, it is all about him and, dare I say, sabotages Hillary as a viable contender for VP.
ES, will definitely keep that in mind :-) We had a cousin who lived at Lake of the Ozarks, and I remember that area very fondly.
I agree that Bill has sabotaged Hillary. Not intentionally, but effectively.
Well I was rooting for Espana, if for no other reason than Torres (who plays for Liverpool FC) was playing for them ;-)
Here’s an excellent article, sad, but, true…
Here’s a stretch…
But Bill sabotaging Hillary’s shot at VP may be cover for her non-selection by Obama.
Bill may be pissed, but taking a pickaxe to the nominee isn’t anywhere near politically smart.
If he wanted to fuck Obama up, he would ake it more costly for him to NOT pick Hillary…
Just a thought.
…he would make it more costly…
Did you read Glenn Greenwald today? If not, it’s well worth reading tomorrow before that post slips by, imo.
Thanks Eureka. Heading over there now.
Not the best video, but a really nice tune:
Alexi Murdoch — Song For You
I caught Glenn but missed Digby. Thanks.
More obscure music — Kris Drever
Sounds like a happy Nick Drake. /s
If you do it, I would recommend one thing you should not miss: the Harry Truman library and museum in Independence MO. I finally went there last year after living in eastern KS for many years, and was glad I went. It made me proud to be a Democrat and reinforced my understanding of what a pathetic wretch we have had as president these last eight years and how important it is to elect a Democratic president to clean up the mess he will leave behind.
Heh, you’re right! ;-)
(((nahant)))
Well, that is a must-see in my book then — wonder if that could sway my Dad from what I believe will be his vote for McSame? He’s told me stories of how his family hated HST.
Dad is a funny one; I think he’s torn at this point with the choices.
I liked Kris
Well folks, this old firedog is about to call it a night.
g’ nite fabulous firedogs
omg it’s almost 3 AM here — I need to split! G’night all, and thanks ES, it was fun to hang out :-)
hmmmmmm – fascinating newt! It sure bears watching. That wire story photo of Bill, if anywhere near relevant to the accompanying story, may prove a gift to Obama that will just keep on giving.
Just free from cleaning up after a big dinner of freshly caught Copper River sockeye, homemade pesto (with Cypress Grove hard goat cheese) fresh greens salad with apples and carmalized pecans, Heitz Cellars 2004 Petit Verdot and rhubarb crisp with homemade rosehip-strawberry-vanilla ice cream.
Going to go down and spend an hour or so tomorrow morning with a former Alaska GOP Representative, who is off to 3 years of prison tomrrow at noon for corruption. He’ll be waving goodbye along the freeway to former constituents….
nite eureka
nite LL
Night, ES and LL. Me too.
I recently asked a Repub why he was going to vote for McCain. He was embarrassed and gave a really empty answer. Reminded me of how I used to ask my juvenile probationers why they liked a certain guy or why they did a certain crime. Their answers embarrassed them. I think we should all be asking our friends and family just why they are thinking of voting for McCain. And pressing again — gently but persistently — for answers. They tend, those silly voters, to end up embarrassing themselves. Which doesn’t, by the way, suggest for one moment that they won’t pull the trigger…..oops, lever….for the bad guy anyway. But at least they should still stay embarrassed.
Hannibal, you still there?
That anthem thing was a perversion of Hayden’s wonderful music. He is one of my favorite composers, and I like the string quartets especially. Sorry it took me so long to find what was originally a beautiful piece of music- Emperor Quartet-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFXRWUicWU0
Wish I’d been invited to that dinner! Yum!
Hey ET!
Glenn certainly knocks it out of the ballpark with this…
jeep jeep
Uh oh, I just missed ES… Aloha, ES, LL, LH, and any others…!
Yeah. 2006 was a sign that Democrats should run and hide from themselves. Or something.
I was taught that cowardice bred cowardice. But I am not a Senator or Critter.
Good night and sweet dreams ES, LL, Loo Hoo & other sleepyheads including this
bushedole brat. Catch up with you intrepids, newton, ET, Dearie, et al with my morning coffee. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzAloha, npb!
Bonjour from my hotel in Paris…. Going to Versailles today….
I’m surprised Glenn never mentioned Donna Edwards upset victory…! ;-)
Gonna check out the Louvre? Awesome!
nite npb
Hey katymine!
Its after 9am and need to get downstairs for petite dejour…. which isn’t petite thank God….. Heading out…. HI ES…
I’ve been spending way too much time over at Dkos arguing with “pragmatists.” All we’ve got to do is get Obama elected, and everthing will be sweetness and light. If you oppose us, “enjoy the McCain administration.” Wow!!!
Have fun! I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
Degrees of absolutism? At Kos?
Somebody wake me up – is this still the primaries?
Hiya, Valley Girl, Dearie!
Waiting for summer to start up here. ETette is home for two weeks, before she starts her first post college job – counting butterflies in the North Cascades Wilderness for the summer, which is also starting late there. She caught a 30-pound King salmon last week, and will be going fishing with me again this week.
I gave up. Shook the dust off my sandals.
No, it’s not the primaries. And, their messaih has taken a very sharp turn to the right, e.g., on death penalty he’s to the right of the SCOTUS majority and to the right of 3/7 of the Reagan/Bush appointees. That’s where Obama thinks the mythical center is.
Spare us, oh Lord!
Spew!!! And that was some very good Sav Blanc.
Is ETette looking for any particular kind of butterflies – or just butterflies in general?
This data should be very interesting – butterflies are pollinators just like bees and there are some theories about hive collapse that involve pesticides/herbicides and all manner of other types of pollution – particularly the hormone mimics.
I believe you said this was a baseline study – too bad we didn’t do those years ago…sigh.
Sounds divine. I was in Bozeman with my professor-girl just recently. Rivers too rough for much fishing and so many catch/release rivers. I don’t like to play with the fish. I like to cook them. My girl and her family are now driving, (yep — youth will do that for you) — east to Connecticutt where she’ll be studying virtue ethics (god love her) while her husband continues his research on trees&carbon (god love him) and baby-girl gets to know her other grandparents. And to my great joy the Airstream convention was convening. Also the Powder Puff Derby was taking off from Gallatin Airport. Whoa…..almost too much to take in. Alaskan salmon was on sale at the Co-Op for $19.95 a pound….or $35.00 a pound for the good stuff. Enjoy that King salmon!
I swear it’s like talking to Republicans about Bush, a few years ago, I mean. They’d have all kinds of reasons for why he did this or that. Finally it would be: “Look, he’s the President. He knows more than you or I. He has more info. I put my trust in him.” (They would usually quote Scripture at this point too.)
I hear the same things now. “Obama is a very smart man. He has his reasons, and I respect that…” etc.
On matters of pragmatism v. purism, this video by Cenk Uygur is great.
That’s a dead link I believe.
Love to see it, though.
Oops. Something messed up my link. So here’s the raw link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0xsDKi94OE
Yup. That “something” was me, I now realize.
Yeah, it is a baseline data gathering job. Next summer the group will do Mt. Rainier National Park. They’ll alternate between North Cascades and Mt. Rainier every other summer.
Nobody thought to study them in these places before, but it has become important with reports of population declines all over.
Been there.
It’s all important…..and so sad that we didn’t bother to take counts and listen to warnings and take apporpriate steps. But….how did you cook the salmon?
We caught 72 Copper River Sockeye, two Chinook (Kings). $140.00 in fuel, $400 for the charters. 230 pounds of fillets = ? You figure it out….
Just make sure you take photos of your smokehouse renderings again. That was awesome last year.
Some friends of mine (biologists at HSU) were raising the alarm about population declines in small amphibians in the old-growth redwood forests and asking for grants to go out and really study them before they all disappeared.
No money showed up, they were laughed at, and now all the little frogs and lizards, including possibly some previously undiscovered/undocumented species ARE all gone. No one knows what killed them because no one was even paying attention to the fact they were even there. Who cares about frogs and lizards anyway.
ET @ 204 Wow. Lickin’ my lips. I bought a pound and a half of sockeye because I could…..but, oh, I do miss the good old days. Caught trout in the Kings Canyon and all along the highway along eastern Sierras. I won’t eat farmed fish or endangered fish. Along the California coast this year there is NO salmon fishing. Times change.
I was just down there, and – among other things – took a picture of the salmon fishing closed poster in Marshall on Tomales Bay.
Sad, huh? Trashing the planet, one spot at a time. I’m old enough to remember when people didn’t really eat fish except tuna casserole on Friday night. I can still get frozen salmon at Trader Joe’s, but my own grocery store can’t get fresh/non-farmed salmon. My fish guy grabbed me a week ago to tell me they’d gotten a delivery of a couple of pounds of non-farmed salmon…….and I bought what I could eat. But, jeez, iceberg lettuce was $1.50 for a small head today. We are in deep doo-doo. And I live in a growing zone. If we can’t get lettuce on the Oxnard Plain, who can?
Lettuce! Where to get lettuce? Grow it yourself in your flower bed!
Or, local farmer’s market. We have a large Hmong community here – and they have put up ‘community’ greenhouses. We’ve been having fresh baby lettuces and spinach for a month now (it’s Montana). One bunch of spinach fills an entire bag! Yummmm!
Iceberg isn’t anything anyway – try some really good stuff!
Buy local – save the planet!
We’re real locavores. We’ve been eating our own greens – in Alaska – since the 3rd week of April. Grow it, eat it, can it, catch it, freeze it. I’m thinking of getting a couple of goats and 20 chickens next year…
