If you don't live in Virginia's fifth congressional district there are probably two stories you know about its member of Congress, Virgil Goode, Jr. One is how integrally tied up he has been in the Republican Culture of Corruption, particularly in regard to congressional bribers Mitchell Wade and Brent Wilkes. They were both found guilty, but the man they paid the most bribes to is still a member of Congress! And their MZM fiasco is not just about corruption but also about a local tragedy that cost the taxpayers of the City of Martinsville and Henry County upwards of $775,000 after Goode's deal with them went bust.
And if GOP corruption has faded from your memory, you may still remember Goode's moment on the national stage when he introduced anti-Muslim bigotry and old fashioned racism with a gratuitous and deranged attack on a newly elected congressman from Minneapolis, Keith Ellison. (Oh, and Goode isn't too good at math or working and playing well with others.)
When I met Virginia activist Tom Perriello for the first time he told me he is running for Congress to replace the culture of corruption in Washington with a culture of service. I liked how it sounded. As I got to know him better over the months, and to meet his friends and colleagues, I came to understand that that isn't a slogan; it's at the core of his life. Tom struck me as one of the most earnest guys I had ever met running for office.
He comes from a faith based background-- in the finest and most admirable sense of the term-- which has community service front and center. He's spent years working on solutions to human rights issues in Africa and security issues in Afghanistan.
I'm not willing to cede on inch of my faith or my values to one side of the equation claiming to know God's will on earth. I believe this is a chance-- even bigger than our politics-- to reclaim the very debate about what it means to live in what Martin Luther King called "the beloved community." That's because loving your neighbor as yourself is not just a good idea, it's an actual Commandment.
Before we go on to ask Tom about his specific plans to bring a new perspective to Congress, I'd urge you to watch this little video he made for us that explains why he decided to run for Congress.
There's a chance Virginia Democrats could pick up as many as 4 seats in the House and almost a sure thing that they are picking up an open Republican Senate seat. If Obama wins one southern state this year it is likely to be Virginia. Tom's district has a PVI of R+6 and Bush won in 2004 with 56% of the vote.
On the other hand, Mark Warner and Jim Webb are probably the most respected and best liked politicians in the area and local Democrats have been winning elections in VA-05 lately. In the last congressional race, Al Weed held Goode down to under 60%. Since then, the Republican agenda, which he has consistently rubber stamped, has turned toxic in the minds of most people.
Tom is running neck and neck with Goode in the fundraising race; each has just over $600,000 on hand-- Goode from lobbyists, PACs and big industries whose interests he looks out for, and Tom from individuals looking for a new kind of political leader. We just added Tom to the Blue America candidate's list and I hope you'll be moved to make a donation to his campaign today after hearing what he has to say in the comments section.

Welcome to firedoglake and Blue America, Tom! We are looking forward to hearing how your race is going against one of the worst members of Congress in terms of corruption.
Hi Everyone,
It’s really great to be here. It’s a hot and sunny day here in the 5th district. As i’m talking to you our grassroots organizers and volunteers are out at six county fairs and farmers markets across the district spreading our message.
It’s an honor to be named to Blue America and I look forward to our discussion.
Welcome! and great video introduction: “non military answers to military conflicts”, “make a difference in our world”, “America is great because of Americans (not destiny)” - all positions gained from real experience of actually working with other peoples in the world.
Greetings Tom.
That video is just about the best two-minute spot I’ve ever seen.
Thank you for your moral compass and committed human ‘involvement’.
I look forward to hearing your voice often in the halls of Congress.
Thanks eph89! I feel blessed to have the experiences I’ve had all around the world. What struck me the most is how problems from far away seem that they don’t have solutions but when you get up close you realize that the solutions are possible, we just need the political will. That’s why I’m running to bring a new generation of leaders more interested in solutions than excuses.
Good afternoon Tom. Thank you for giving up a campaign Saturday afternoon to join us here at FDL.
I’m pretty sure that you’re in what is considered a heavily Republican district. How do you reach the voters there on issues such as the War in Irak, spying on US citizens and other so-called “librul” issues?
good to see you again, even if this time only online. Next time you are in DC, there are several Members who do want to meet you. Both Carolyn McCarthy and Brad Miller apologize, but between the late votes and the rain could not get to the event, but asked to be informed the next time you are around.
Peace
First of all our district is a classic independent district. It voted for Govs. Kaine and Warner, both great Democrats. In the primary Barack Obama got more votes than McCain and Huckabee combined. We’re confident, like the DCCC, that this district is up for grabs.
I find the people here are more interested in result than partisanship. There is a deep frustration over how little Rep. Goode has done to bring back economic prosperity and good jobs to working families. We’ve lost tens of thousands of jobs in our district under Goode’s watch and he’s voted against SCHIP, against minimum wage, and against negotiating cheaper drug prices. These aren’t liberal issues they are issues that deeply affect our issues. People are also just fed up with the culture of corruption. That’s why we’ve outraised and outorganized him.
Great to see you too Ken! Thanks for all your support, I hope you and your wife make it back to the district real soon.
Just moved OUT of the area [to Maui] but I’ll send a little $$$$ your way. Chris VanHollen was my congressperson. He’s better with the DCCC $$$ than Rahm was, so i hope he’s sending some your way.
Donna Edwards is a friend of mine and should be able to offer advice & support in your run.
Good luck!!

Where exactly does the district lay? Southwestern VA? Which I believe would put the mountains/Appalachia into the district? Is there mining in the area with all the attendant pollution?
Isn’t that a great video?
Tom I’d love to hear about your time working overseas. As I recall, Tim Kaine took the starch out of right wing attacks of his being an atheist leftist when he mentioned he had served as an overseas missionary for a year.
Thanks for the pledge! We need every bit. Donna Edwards will make an amazing congresswoman. We know each other from our days in the non-profit sector. Both of us were the early signers to the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq.
Hello Tom,
I have to tell you, I am very pleased with the campaign you have been running so far.
Your support for working families has been outstanding, and something sorely missed in these economically fustrating times.
Would you care to elaborate more on your energy platform?
The District is Central and Southside Virginia. It’s huge, the size of New Jersey. It is made up of 22 counties and municipalities. Driving all over the district, puts a lot of miles on my truck. Here’s a map of the district.
Hi Tom, I hope all’s well as you travel the vast 5th. Based on your interaction with 5th District Virginians, what do they want and need most from Washington right now?
Tom:
It is well known that the ethics process in the House is broken; it is equally well-known that there is a bi-partisan consensus that it should stay that way.
As a practitioner of conviction politics, it seems pretty clear that ethics would be a top priority for you.
In 2005, when a Congresswoman from NY launched her ultimately successful bid to unseat one of the most vile and corrupt Republicans in the House at the time, I asked her if she would re-invigorate the House ethics process by filing an ethics complaint against one of said Republicans cronies. She promised me that she would.
She got to the House and has done nothing of the sort.
I understand that sometimes politicians over-promise and that you may discover new information once you reach the House that may preclude you from keeping certain campaign promises. The situation sucks, but if we are going to live in the reality-based world, I think we need to accept that the world sometimes sucks.
So I’m not going to ask you to make any promises.
But…
It’s common knowledge that members HATE being assigned to the Ethics Committee and once so assigned, they can’t wait to get off it. I think it’s because they know they sell a little piece of their souls every time they “look the other way.” I also suspect they “look the other way” because they make a moral and political calculation: they can do more good for the people they represent if they don’t piss off every one of their colleagues, Republican and Democrat.
So…
When you get to the Congress, I do expect that you will maintain your convictions; that you will not be predisposed to easily blurring the line between right and wrong. I’m not going to ask you to be a super-hero; everyone knows they don’t exist in real life.
But I do ask you to be the conscience of the Democratic caucus. In cuacus meetings, I want you to bring this up. I want you to lead a coalition of other concerned Democrats. I want you to begin the process of flushing out the old guard and bringing in a new generation of leaders with respect for the common good.
Thanks for fighting the good fight.
I am a big fan of Gov. Kaine, and he has been a trailblazer on winning faith voters back to the Democratic party. Though my work overseas was not with missionary groups, it was my faith that called me to move to West Africa to work on ending the atrocities in Sierra Leone. It was incredible to have been part of the peace process in Liberia; watching it go from brutal civil war to fairly stable peace. I think we look back on our past and ask “how did we let slavery take place?” someday others will ask “How did we let genocide take place? or How was homelessness and poverty so pervasive?”.
wow, that is a HUGE district!!!!
I used to work for Dave Obey of the 7th district of Wisconsin. Similar spread-out. A challenge to cover.
Jim, thanks for all your help with unions and the 5th district. Economic prosperity is the chief priority in this campaign. On energy, I believe we need a commitment to energy independence within this generation. I believe there’s the potential for real green jobs in my district. I don’t know how much of the answer will be wind vs. high cellulosic fuels, but if we create the incentives, American ingenuity will get us there.
Hey Tom, welcome! So good to have you here today.
My district wants to see the old Washington culture of corruption done away with and leaders who don’t vote with corporate interests but by the district’s interest. I’m hearing a call for integrity and honesty, and I will bring that to Washington.
Tom, I guess I didn’t fool you even slightly! You are most welcome to any help I may have been, or can be in the future. I believe in you, your common sense and the ethics and morals you have shown. The 5th will be much better off with you in Washington!
I think the first step to legislating with integrity is campaigning with integrity, and that’s why I’m rejecting Corporate PAC donations unlike Goode (who’s taken 1.5 million from lobbyists and PAC’s) (that’s why we need small donors!). I’ve also created a “tithing initiative” volunteer resource to local charities and community services, like Habitat for Humanity, soup kitches, and domestic violence shelters. We’re trying to change the way politics is done in Virginia.
Thanks Jane. Pleasure to be here, and thank you for the great endorsement.
I just wanted to be more clear. We are tithing ten percent of our volunteer hours to local charities.
You make a great point. TO the extent much of the corruption is born out of special-interest and corporate influence, taking money out of the game at the campaign stage is a great head-start.
But.
I didn’t hear any magic words, and I’d really like to.
I’d like to hear a commitment from you that you will lead an effort - not necessarily headline grabbing or otherwise high profile, but rather one of steady pressure and intensity - to shape the Democratic Caucus to be more in line with your style of politics.
I’m not sure if you saw the recent report, but House members that voted for the FISA capitulation received much more money from the telcos than those that did not. It’s obvious that you care about many of the same issues dear to the hearts of your everyday American. But if we are going to serve the people, we need to begin by sanitizing - or at least cutting the gangrene out of - Congress…
I love the idea that you’re tithing volunteer hours to charities. Wish more people would pick up on service to the community like this. I know Larry Kissell and Charlie Brown are engaged in similar community outreach efforts, especially to veterans.
Absolutely. This goes to what i’m calling the new generation of politics. On FISA, I have been a vocal critic of retroactive telecom immunity, including the new “compromise” legislation. I believe our Constitution is not up for negotiation. I am interested in creative approaches to publicly financed elections, such as the Patriot Dollars proposal. The new style of politics means not caring about the party line but principle. So if the Party gets out of step on something like our constitutional rights, its my job to stand up for the truth.
Hi Tom and welcome to the Lake!
I have a question. Once you are elected, (note my confidence), will you come back here and talk to us? Will you maintain communication with us through this site?
I’m a huge fan of what Charlie Brown has done when it comes to supporting veterans on the campaign. For all of Virgil Goode’s inflammatory remarks and corporate ties, few things disgust me more than his lack of support for the new GI Bill. I’m proud of Sen. Webb’s leadership on this bill, and it’s becoming clear that the Democratic Party has become the party that supports our troops and supports our veterans.
Big fan and supporter of Webb here, until recently I lived in Fairfax County for 17 years.
Donations: I’m in.
Let’s support this great candidate, folks!
Of course! I’m a huge believer in People Powered Politics since my days helping found Avaaz.org the global online movement.
Thanks Tom.
I’ll be watching. And helping (if/when you ask).
Hi Tom,
sorry I’m late to the thread. Best of luck in your campaign. We need you and more like you. Thank you for stepping up and running for office.
Thank you! I’ll contribute on that promise, and look forward to seeing you here after your swearing in ceremony!
:)
Thanks for the support egregious! Even a contribution of $50 can fill our tanks with gas to get us to more voters in the district.
How has your stand on FISA gone over in your district?
Tom,
Who are your role models? Can you point to specific people or experiences in your formative years that helped to give shape to the person you’ve become?
Where would you like to be in 10 years? 20?
And what do you wish to accomplish in your first term? Can you point to any specific goals that you feel would allow you to say that you’ve been successful if they are accomplished?
People down here don’t like government intruding on their constitutional rights. Whether it’s their right to free speech, right to bear arms, or right to be free from wire-tapping.
wow, Mike! How good to see YOU here.
Will you be out on the campaign trail with your camera this summer and fall? I’m way ready for another Mike Stark/politician encounter! (Don’t get thrown around this time.)
:)
My grandpa Tom, my mom’s dad, was a high school math teacher, a fireman, and WWII veteran. He always taught me that every person has to take responsibility for themselves, but it’s what you do for your community and your country that defines you.
One of the worst things about some politicians is that they’re more concerned about where they’re going to be in 10 years than what they can do for their constituents and their country right now. I’ve always tried to shape my life around the question “what can i do right now, at this moment for those who are struggling.”
In my first term, I’m focused on bringing jobs and economic relief to Southside Virginia, solving the crisis in Iraq, and putting the country on the path to a green economy.
LOL. This is my district. And Tom is a tremendous candidate. Honestly, he fits this district perfectly, but I think he’d also be a great fit in any other. He’s managed to simplify politics - choices are a matter of right vs. wrong; always choose what is right.
Anyway, I’ve already done some stuff with McCain, and yes, you should expect more from me. Lately, I’ve been doing most of my writing over at HuffingtonPost (and I still post audio of calls from time to time at Democrats.com), and I hope to organize a few busloads of people to make another trip out to BillO’s when he starts criticizing Netroots Nation.
Right now, I’ve been evangelizing this: http://my.barackobama.com/page.....ainstFISA/
We had 8 members Thursday at noon; now we’ve got almost 2,000
It’s been amazing.
Any chance you could pass that message on to Senator Webb? His vote earlier this week in favor of cloture on the FISA amendments would seem to indicate he thinks otherwise.
Hey Tom, I’ve noticed Goode surrogates trying to brand you as a liberal. I think your label-defying conviction politics can resonate with everyone and create a natural pivot from such accusations. How are 5th Virginias responding so far? Diffusion-of-innovation scholarship suggests that messages outside existing schema can take a while to catch on, but I don’t see that as a problem for you.
In these very hard times, people with sick children must be upset with Goode voting no on SCHIP. I am in with a small donation and I sure hope you win!
I think the 5th district is thrilled to have a Democrat reaching out to them like this. We’ve opened six offices across this district and are engaging voters in every city and every county. People are sick and tired of their current leadership and are looking for new solutions.
That’s great news to me to hear you’ll be out “on the trail”, Mike. I signed that FISA page on Obama’s site days ago. I’m glad it’s at 2000, but sure do need more than that.
I see your things on HuffPo, and will anxiously await the famed Stark Destruction on the “Rethugs in Public” “channel”.
I’m glad you are here at the Lake, and hope you come back more. Your work has been invaluable. Looks like you’re about to get a great Congress member.
good for you!
Now, if I could get me one of those. (SorryA**ed Salazar from CO3 is what I’m saddled with, and it’s a true bummer.)
:)
There are 30,000 children of working families in Virginia that would have been covered by SCHIP. This was a very close vote, and my district and my state needed a leader who would stand up for the most vulnerable.
Tom, are you seeing a lot of new people getting involved in politics? What is motivating them? Are you getting a good response from Republicans and conservatives in your district?
One of the most amazing parts of this campaign has been the influx of new people into the political process (and not just candidates like me!) We created a program called Common Good Summer where we gave 15 local college students a crash course on politics, organizing and social action, and in return they have given us their summer. They are working all across this district, registering voters, spreading our message, and being examples of the new generation of results-oriented politics. It is because of their commitment and passion that we have been able to open 6 offices and reach so many voters across this New Jersey sized district.
Tom, as a Lutheran pastor, Howie’s “testimonial” to your “faith based background” resonates strongly with me. How have folks responded in your district, when religion comes into the political conversation?
One of the most rewarding things about this campaign has been not just the volume of new people entering the political process, but also the type. One of our Common Good Summer Fellows goes to Liberty University and he represents a great new voice for our party: a young Evangelical who is motivated by issues like torture, Darfur, and poverty who believes the progress value of caring for your neighbor, whether that neighbor is down the street, across town or across an ocean.
Appreciate your clip. Music to my disheartened ears, as well as your commitment and appreciation on how profound the FISA situation is.
What is and will be your secret for not letting the amoral “turkeys” get you down?
Most voters want to know what makes a candidate tick, and people find out pretty quickly how my faith has shaped what i’ve done in combat zones and in service on this campaign. I believe there is a growing divide between the partisan political work of the Religious Right and the people in the pews. People are more concerned with right and wrong rather than right and left.
This is why we need the new generation of leaders. People like Donna Edwards, Darcy Burner and myself have been working for solutions before we even get to Congress, not waiting idly by.
Are there particular issues where this “growing divide” is becoming more and more visible? I can imagine several here in MO where that is the case, but what do you see in VA?
Hey Tom, I live in Alexandria, but am most enthusiastic about both your and Judy’s candidacies this cycle (along with Andrea Miller next door to you). Any thoughts on what us out-of-towners can do, besides write checks?
I am feeling discouraged about the “ends justifies the means” postponement by progressives willing to pander for votes to get in, rather than being standup about principles.
Thanks for the support Ron! You’re within driving distance to help us! Write to our volunteer coordinator Rachel AT perrielloforcongress.com and she can tell you what you can do.
Writing checks and telling your friends to write checks works too! ;-)
Hope folks will consider a contribution of any size to this terrific candidate.

James Dobson got upset when Evangelicals began to worry about Darfur and Climate Change. Fortunately in National Evangelical Association board voted overwhelmingly decided to continue their work to help change the world for the better.
Is there an alternative to contributing directly online? Address for checks?
Yes, and thank you. The quarter ends Monday at midnight. Our mailing address is Perriello for Congress P.O. Box 306, Ivy, VA 22945. Checks can be made payable to Perriello for Congress.

Thanks. Will get it in the mail. :)
Thank you everyone for your time and your generosity. I’m working hard to raise money through the end of the quarter, and will continue to work double shifts every day to flip our district and turn Virginia Blue!
Well, it’s been a great discussion, thank you so much for being here, Tom! You are just the kind of forthright, progressive candidate we are looking for.
Please feel free to come back and chat with us any time in the comments, and do keep us posted on how your campaign is going.
I’ll do that. Best of luck, yours is a race we can win.

Good to see you here - am considerably cheered by your candidacy. Thanks for being here today. Count me in for continuing blue-america donations, albeit rather modest but heart-felt.
(((((Tom Perriello)))))
Nice chatting, Tom. Hope to see you soon.
