Over the past few years, we have slipped away from one of the most important underpinnings of this republic of ours: that those who are elected to represent us in government, whether they be Senators or Representatives or the President -- they work for us.
And it is well past time we reminded them of that -- loud and clear -- don't you think?
The other day, I quoted an old FDR chestnut that KathyG highlighted, but the nugget of it bears repeating this morning:
I'll close with one of my favorite political stories. It concerns my all-time favorite president, FDR. He was meeting with a group of reformers trying to persuade him to support one of their goals. After they finished speaking, FDR said to them, "You've convinced me. I want to do it. Now make me do it."
And that, my friend, is the task at hand.
It is, indeed.
One of the things that far too often gets lost in the day to day shuffle is this: politicians compromise, activists push...and somewhere between the two, legislation gets made. Our job, as advocates for progressive policy, is to stand up and make the folks we elect to Congress do what we think they ought to be doing. If we had more elected officials willing to lead on civil liberties issues like Russ Feingold, Chris Dodd and a number of others have been in front of the cameras and behind the scenes, I think we would be much better off. But, alas, we don't.
So it is up to us to make them do what is necessary to protect the liberty and the rule of law on which this nation was founded.
I know that I say this a lot, but citizenship is something that you do. You can't just sit back and let someone else do it for you -- because that person may be advocating policies that you find abhorrent. Only your voice is going to carry the message that you want to send.
We've been tossing around some ideas on how to best advocate for the rule of law, mainly centered around the FISA issue since it is the latest front in this battle to restore balance and accountability in our government. Our Accountability Now project is one way we are trying to do just that. You can find some of the other potential action step proposals here.
But it starts with collecting necessary information and that takes a little legwork and some phone calls to local offices and checking websites and local newspapers and such. So, here's step one for us today -- let's see how many public appearances we can come up with for members of Congress, especially Senators but really folks in both houses. If you find a public event, let us know day, time, place, and who is involved in the comments. We're working on setting up a mechanism to assemble all of this, but we can't wait -- the recess for Congress begins this weekend, and they need to hear from as many of us as possible through the entire 4th of July break.
It's time to remind them what patriotism really looks like. Now, let's get to work...

mornin’ all…
Morning jayt…need more coffee, brb. How are you this morning?
doin’ great thanks. (almost fully caffeinated and ready to roll).
Poking around on Obama’s senatorial website for a schedule…there wasn’t one…but there was this:
“Constituents are encouraged to contact my Senate office for assistance in any matter concerning the federal government. Before a Constituent Services Agent can begin an inquiry on any specific issue, constituents must submit a signed Privacy Act Release Form. This enables my office to access your personal information to determine how best we can be of assistance.”
Hi Christy. Great post, I always like your stuff. The other day I went looking for the House voting record (I admit I don’t do this much) to see exactly who voted which way on the FISA legislation. Very confusing. What I found was HR 6304, passed on 6/20/08. Can anyone tell me if that is the particular FISA legislation in question?
G’morning Christy and Firepups !
I slept for 7 hours(which is an eternity for me) and my batteries are full recharged.
Let’s list all the Senators’ phone numbers as well as collect all the best talking points in this thread, so we can keep up the pressure right through the July 4th holiday …
I believe that one of the essential things we progressives lack is a clear, point by point agenda. A platform for our Party within a Party.
Without such we are reduced to the politics of gender and race or worse character. A progressive agenda would provide at the minimum two things.
A tool by which we can demand from and keep track of a candidate’s actions in office. Every vote can be examined and rated according to whether or not it complies with our agenda.
A ready-made platform from which progressive minded pols can run from. They can find and use our agenda to reach out to the people in a principled fashion.
You will note that no one in the ’sphere has spent more than five minutes on this. It’s all about character, race and gender as per Kos, Marshall and Bowers’ edicts that such is the way to win elections.
Well Boyz we have been ‘winning’ some lately but when a ‘win’ is a fool like Joe Sestak or a liar like Obama just exactly where is that taking us?
Right, nowhere….
A project to create the Progressive Agenda would also serve to get folks thinking about what we want, what we need.
I started a while ago with my post: What is Progressive? but got distracted by the Barkey vs. Sister Beelzebub wars.
Coincidence?
I doubt it.
I assert that without an agenda we are going to find it very difficult to move things in the direction our nation needs to go. You will have noticed that the ReThugs had a pretty concise and effective agenda for decades and were very successful with it. Now that they’ve lost the thread of their narrative due to the disaster there policy goals have created they’re in deep shit. But that’s because their policy goals never led anywhere else.
We are in deep, deep shit, and don’t let the Kool-Aid junkies tell you otherwise, because we have never articulated a clear set of policy goals.
The very same — that’s the House bill.
I have found that I usually get better scheduling information from local offices than the DC ones for most elected folks. With Obama, though, it’s probably better to check his campaign website — that’s going to have the bulk of appearance information on it for him of late.
I do know that he and Hillary Clinton are appearing together at a rally in Unity, NH (no, I’m not making the town name up!) today — but I’m not certain on the time for the rally…
it’s at one eastern,
supposedly they each got the same number of votes there
Ahhhhhhh….second cuppa coffee poured, big pot of pinto beans cooking in the crock pot. Now I can sit back and relax for a sec.
And I’m interested in ideas that you all have on this. So, please share.
Interesting. No schedule on Amy Klobuchar’s web site either. Was surprised to find myself in a group photo on her home page, however. Who knew? And I won’t out myself. *g* Still digging . . . .
Patty Murray is the Senator from my state who should be ashamed of her FISA vote. Coincidenatlly, she lists NO events during the July 4th recess. I will give the local office a call in a few hours, see if they have anything for us.
Thanks for the confirmation. One of the reasons I was looking it up was I wanted to see just what Congressman Sestak did (re: post above). Fool indeed. I gave this guy money - hard cash - moola. That won’t happen again.
Let’s try again. Squirrels chewed this up last time… No schedules listed for the execrable Isaksen or Chambliss on their official sites. Can’t check their facebook stuff because the webby nannies here at work go TSK at such behavior.
I have now been to Rep. Tim Walz’s and Colonel John Kline’s web sites (the latter requires immersion of eyes and fingers in sheep dip). No events listed. WTF?
Yep. 107 to 107. That’s why they chose Unity, NH rather than some of the other towns called Unity around the country.
ahh, I just thought they picked NH cause of the primary status
A lot of times, the best places to find out scheduling information are from local offices or events listings in local newspapers. Also, check with senior centers in your area — because seniors tend to vote in higher percentages than other age groups, they get a lot of elected official attention. So call and ask if there is a town hall coming up there in your area as well. Especially since there are Medicare issues pending, that’s a good place to check.
Or talk to whomever is in charge of the parades for the 4th in your area. Or any local fairs or festivals. Lots of activity in the summertime — and lots of potential fodder for the You Work For Us Summer Tour.
OT with apologies, but just picked this up from the LA Times. The execrable Grover Norquist:
barbara is momentarily speechless.
Morning Christy and Pups.
I see McSame is pulling out all the stops again today, brave soul, meeting with GM workers in Lordstown. A totally canned and packaged performance, no outsiders need apply.
Does he realize the coward he appears, not daring to appear in any other circumstance than a precooked, predigested, thoroughly insulated bubble?
Thas o.k. You couldn’t pay me enough to make me want to see him in person anyway.
karnak12@14: talk to RevDeb: she has a meeting coming up with Sestak.
Any thoughts on this?H. CON. RES. 362
Is this H Neocon Res. 362?
My jaw just hit my desk so hard I may have fractured it. Kee-ripes…
Hey. Is anyone else being bombarded with hinky error messages when trying to post or even just click on ‘read the rest of this…’ today?
Started when I tried to read more at Attaturk’s screed and lovely photo of himselfthescal downstairs.
Do I have cooties, or is it just jittery hamsters at the Lake?
McCain is just there to Ensure® the GM workers.
you can find out about local appearances here - at a minimum, a nice letter to the editor regarding his treachery and inviting the locals to ask him about at _____ event wouldn’t hurt.
having trouble previewing and submitting - anyone else ?
Me too.
I might have cooties too!
I think when the backstage folks are working on the system, stuff like that occurs.
Squirrels, not cooties.
Um, wonder if they’ll ask him when they’ll meet the same fate as their compatriots at the GM Janesville (WI) plant…it will be history next year.
The squirrels are acting up today.
Use the al-aipac site to express opposition to the bil.
Here’s Evan Bayh’s twin “Iran Resolution.”
Hi Christy. I posted along these lines last night - the Democrats seem to have forgotten who their friends are.
Like they did for Dubya, the MSM will assist McCain by portraying the staged event as an open public forum.
That is the current state of affairs. Without the media lying to the public, McCain could never pull it off. There are thousands of highly pissed off GM employees. Current and former.
Golman Sachs gave GM another giant kick in the nuts yesterday.
McCain just said that America got really “productive” after Pearl Harbor….
saying that December 7, 1941 to the end of WWII were the best years and that is what the mofo wants. That’s how he thinks the “economy” will be fixed…
See, they still want another “event” in a state of war…Unf’ingbelievable. I hope someone hangs this around his neck…
Straight out of the Neocon handbook….grrrr…
Okay, back to regular programming.
Sharing this from my email box:

House meetings are a great way to get to know your fellow supporters and help build a united volunteer organization in neighborhoods all across the country.
but, but “McCain hates me” pigs.
We know — we’re already working on it. Thanks for the heads up…
thanks. i feel so much better, heh. ;->
People keep waiting for “them” to do something. WE need to do act. And everyone can help: lead, follow, support, teach, learn. There are plenty of things that don’t cost money and are as easy as a phone call or email of support.
yes! yes! *puff puff* We’s runnin’ as fast as we can, dear lady.
p.s., hope you and yours are doing well these days. ;->
We also need to remind “them” that we are not “advocates” as Miss Nancy called us, but their employers. We send them there, pay their salaries, and we are responsible for all the goodies they get.
OT: For anyone who is following the the dustup between two of my favorite people, Glenzilla has posted a response to Olbermann’s response at Dkos to Glenn’s response yesterday to what Olbermann and Jonathan Alter said on Wednesday’s Count Down.
Good morning, Christy!
Lemme see:
1. CongressCritters’ actually work for us. THAT is their job. Check.
2. Our ‘job’ or responsibility, is to insist that ‘they’ actually DO ‘their’ job, rather than seeking to enrich themselves or giving free-rein to their monumental, colosal large and big egos and unrestrained, if not pathetic, narcissism. Check.
Sounds like a plan, a most-excellent plan. Simple, straightforward and fun, as well.
BTW Christy, you’ve my hopes that the well-being of your inlaws continues to improve, I well-know the situation with which you are dealing, as do many here and all of us understand there will be times when your presence will be required elsewhere, just as we all hope, that during those times, exhausting and draining as they often are, that you, the Peanut, and Mr. Redd may have serenity and peace.
Life unfolds magnificently, as you know, and the transitions at either end are equally important, and ultimately, so far as I am concerned, are, each in their own way, cause for appreciation, if not celebration. (I know that you understand what I mean, poorly as I’ve expressed it) You are in my thoughts, as are Quaker Girl, Jane,BoobyG and, to be honest, many other of the wonderful human beings whom I’ve been priviledged to meet here. Much appreciation to all, but especially to Jane and yourself.
Holy Sh*t!!!!!!
”It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.
The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.
”From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water,” said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.
If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.
Seasoned polar scientists believe the chances of a totally ice-free North Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by huge swathes of thinner ice formed over a single year. ”

hey. some dingbat lady has a letter in our local paper today - blasts the dastardly heathen libruls fer takin’ all the toys & makin’ out like bandits whilst she is doing right poorly and it’s all the libruls’ fault for runnin off with all the loot.
i have no IDEA what she’s drinkin’ in her coffee. mebbe she left it to soak in the suds last night and forgot to rinse.
should i send her to Lordstown OH GMers so they can hep her? Some of our sweetest neighbors/closest friends are -um- Democrats and also autoworkers.
mebbe this darlin’ lady is McSame’s advance guard.. yougogrrrl, fwiw, *g*
All right, dammit. Takes more than squirrels and cooties to drive me away. I’m back. Bwahahahahaha!
personal meet ups, calls to their offices, letters to the editor
found this handy FISA 1 pager courtesy mcjoan to be very handy wrt talking points for us non lawyers
hey, I didn’t know about the WMD portion, wonder how many congressional lemmings are in that same leaky boat
good girl! i’m finding using preview keeps the toobz from swallowing my comments whole. try it & see what ya git. ;->
Thanks, DW — much appreciated. MIL is doing much better — improving every day. FIL, not so much. Any additional good thoughts or prayers would be much appreciated. It’s been a very long two weeks, I have to say…
I’m waiting for those dang oil companies to try, just TRY, to find the perfect season for driving their bigrigs acrosst the frozen tundra like they told us. omg. you don’t suppose. they. lied?! why i’m shocked, just shocked!
Christy
So sorry you are having family illnesses. Good thoughts and prayers coming your way. Stay strong and don’t wear yourself out.
((((Christy and family))))
Oops! That second link should be: http://www.salon.com/opinion/g.....index.html
Just which or what toys is she talking about?
I ain’t got NO toys.
nice letter to our paper today praising Sherrod Brown for leadership and efforts on environmental issues.
No, he’s not the only “good guy”, but it reminds me we ought to praise our Congresscritters, issue by issue, action by action, when they do something we approve of.
DC is a hard town in the best of times, and surely a pleasant word of appreciation would stand out among the brickbats the critters constantly have to dodge.
Carrots are just as useful as the sticks — very true.
Good news for Texas….Noriega is only 2 points behind Cornyn right now and rising…McCain support soft in Texas with Obama rising fast..
I have a suggestion that I’m not sure whether it’s just dumb or fairly smart, but I’ll throw it out there and maybe some of you can tell me the downside or any unintended consequences. I am so upset about the FISA bill, and there is so little I can do about it, I feel like I have no recourse except to write letters that probably will just get dismissed. But I’m still left with the feeling of abandonment by the candidate who had won me over. So I have decided to change my party affiliation. I did that last year, and only changed back so I could vote in the primary. Here it’s easy (I do it on the internet), fast, and costs nothing. Now I doubt that anyone will notice that I have changed my party affiliation, but it gives me some satisfaction for some reason, I’m not sure why. OTOH, if many liberals who were slapped in the face and openly rejected with this FISA vote were to change their party affiliation en masse, I think it could send a message. I’m talking either Independent or no affiliation at all (which is what Fitz did). It might actually make these politicians realize that, just as it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature, it’s not kool to fuck with your base! Yet it doesn’t preclude changing your affiliation back when they once again realize they need us as much as we need them and that they work for us, not the other way around. Downside?
seriously, i think she must-a fallen in the soup kettle. i haven’t a clue where she got all that nonsense. it was so over the top and nonsensical, it was hilarious.
sounded like something david brooks would try to spoon feed the “believagators” just to see how much they would gulp down at one sitting.
I’m sure Congresswoman Bachman would assure you that this is so much better for polar bears and other artic animals - now they wont have those troublesome ice shelves to separate them - easier to organize those coffee klatches
dear gawd, have we got anyone running against this dunce ?!?!?
OH GOODIE! That just makes my day. Terrific news!
Check out Jane’s Accountability Now campaign…link 5th paragraph in above post.
I don’t see a downside, and good for you. Maybe I’ll do that too. I think I will.
Seems to be a pattern going on. I have to admit that when I’ve seen recent grumbling about Obama here, I’ve smiled. Okay, I giggled. He never won me over and I’m not going to say anything further.
Regarding the Olberman flip, when he was so over the top against Ms. Clinton, I commented on that here. Oh, that Demi can be such a troll. But, now that Greenwald is calling him out…hummm.
Interesting . . . so McCain and I have something in common after all.
Amazing, ‘they’ are looking to find the Northwest Passage to more obscene wealth and destruction while we seek the Northwest Passage to the evolution of human consciousness.
‘They’ haven’t a clue.
Whereas we may well be ‘on’ to something important, if not critical, to the survival of Earthly life.
Hardly seems a ‘fair’ contest.
Time will tell.
Regardless, the loss of the polar ice should serve as a sobering reflection upon all humans and their hubris.
Arrogance does not serve us well, ever.
slap the dunce, publicly, over all the polar bears that are drowning, starving, drooling over the tasty-looking tourists, for want of seal meat that USED to be plentiful and available on those ice shelves a-fore they melted. just a thot.
We do. He’s a good guy with the unfortunate name of Elwyn Tinklenberg. Haven’t seen polling lately for that district. But my best recollection is that Bachmann’s seat is in play (so to speak).
They may notice when the coastal cities have from 4 to 8 inches of water in the streets. Can you imagine what that would do?
Christy, love that Scool House Rock clip. Had to play it twice. :)
On the heels of “Barbie” Bachmann and looping back to our congressional “leaders” and wannabes, are y’all aware that Jesse Ventura is pondering entering the U.S. Senate race in MN (along with Al Franken and the oily Norm Colemeleon)?
2nd thot. suggest, publicly, that the dunce go on a vacation hike across the formerly frozen tundra, in his flip-flops and plaid jammies. oh. yeah. that was stevens.
How would you guys like to borrow Voinovich from OH. Then you could have a trifecta, or sumpin’.
second! never get tired of those things.
I love that one, too. I recently bought the DVD of all the old Schoolhouse Rock bits for The Peanut. And I’ve been singing the preamble song to her in the car — so she knew a bit of it when we watched it. That was some serious fun. (I am SUCH a nerd.)
It will reduce the size of the land mass which will reduce travel time and distance saving oil and saving the world!! /s
It’ll also force those lazy Polar Bears to swim and thus, evolve ! /s
Only Butte, Montana will be above water. Can it hold us all? :)
my condolences. gonna be a long autumn for you.
please please please may Franken prevail!
our present political class is so craven that they may not notice. Look at Iowa.. they just turned the cameras away. I just love it politicians and pundits think they can legislate science. Or that science can somehow be remolded into the image of their own political biases. This works to a point, but ultimately one hits a wall. And then one dies.
Well, it’ll hold all the goopers - seeing as their heads are already in their Buttes
how fast is trent lott going to evolve as his beach
cottagecastle disappears underwater yet again and his insurance company locks their doors?Christy, I missed details about your inlaws, but whatever is happening, I wish you a more peaceful journey going forward.
Grizzlies might have some input on that subject.
:~D
There is no downside. The more they see flight from the party the better. The larger the drop they see in fundraising, the better. The more they see people dropping off their mailing lists or sending empty donation mailings back with a note in it saying “No 4th Amendment, no money…and NO VOTE. Uphold the Constitution”, the better.
I can’t leave the party because in my state you do not register for party. You simply, at vote time, decide if you want a Democrap ballot or a Rethug ballot - otherwise I would happily have left them officially.
Now, whenever I get a call from the DNC, the DLCC, or the DCCC asking for money I tell them that I will NOT give money and I will NOT vote for Democrats because of telecom immunity, endless funding for the illegal war in Iraq, for the Military Commissions Act, for the PATRIOT Act, and because “impeachment is off the table.”
I have also unsubscribed from ALL Democrap mailing lists (when you unsubscribe, they allow you to enter WHY you are leaving - take advantage of that).
Oh kayyy. I fear it’s paintin’ time again here.
Carry on Puppies and squirrels.
just saw that MN 06 has moved from “likely republican” to “toss up”
teehee
Morning, Twain;
Dampen some of their ‘enthusiasm’?
Float their boats?
Be a great opportunity for those who sell ‘waders’?
Convince them that the ‘problem’ is: A. Immigrants. B.Fem bloggers or C. That the Canadians had left the water running in the kitchen sink.
I dunno, ‘their’ learning ‘curve’ looks pretty much like a straight line; for the 1%’ers it leads to the ‘bottom’ line and for many of the rest of ‘them’ it mostly leads to the ‘chow’ line.
i feel your pain. sounds as if you’re doing what you can. oh sigh.
i too fill in the WHY boxes, and NOT the $$$ boxes, fwiw. in hopes there are a few real people at the other end who might notice an up-tick in peeved
party membersparties.(when you unsubscribe, they allow you to enter WHY you are leaving - take advantage of that).
Thank you - I will do that. Going to google that Change Form right now. But, it might take me a while to super-edit my reasons for leaving the party. Would like to make it a short enough explanation that someone reads it. Something more substantive than ‘Cause you’re so f*cked!
More FISA Fun on the Fourth of July upstairs . . .
i fear many of them are operating under the delusion that they personally can grab all they want and skate free.
dummies. those.
speaking of deadeye, where is he these days - harassing trout or canned quail?
;->
HI, how are you? I hadn’t thought of waders - great chance to make money and rafts and stuff like that.
It will be like an island and we can all get a tan. :)
heh. u gots lotsa company. go for it!
I like what Dodd and Feingold have done in regards to speechifying. What I don’t get is why they won’t stop the vote with holds and other tactics to prevent consent agreements from occurring. I read that Dodd wants a housing bill to go through and that is the cost of our constitution? At least Coburn of Oklahoma does it right. He will be a SOB to anybody if he doesn’t like it. Why is Feingold being so nice to the party? He should be there gumming up the works and holding up all legislation until they pull this thing.
It’s a matter of counting the votes, I think — if they don’t have the 41 votes to hold a filibuster, then the effort put into one would be short-lived. And, last I heard, they didn’t have the votes. So they blocked things in other ways behind the scenes instead to get concessions going forward, including a 50 vote margin on the amendment to remove telecom immunity from the bill — which the GOP agreed to as well. There are still things ongoing in terms of back and forth on this — I hope to have better detail for everyone at some point soon.
But that’s the scoop as I know it — without the votes to sustain a filibuster, it’s a hollow threat to try one. But the threat can at least be used as leverage and that’s what they did, as I understand it, to at least force some advantage on something they wanted changed very badly.
BOOYAH!!!! You have no idea how tired and embarrassed we are re Michele Liplock with Bush” Bachmann.
Most recent word I heard was ‘barnacle’.
So?
‘Barnacling’ about, I suppose.
That’s the ’spirit’!, Twain, with capitalists as well as Rethuglicans, it’s never a ‘loss’, but only a ‘gain’.
Just back from a little side trip to Olbermann’s response [he’s way too defensive, trusts John Dean way too much; why would he choose to listen to John Dean over Jonathan Turley?].
I encourage everyone to click on “favorite people,” which takes you to a piece on Huffington Post [terribly slanted in favor of Olbermann]. There’s a poll [who’s right Olbermann or Greenwald] that’s running about 50-50. Vote for Glenn.
Actually, I’ve been staying ON the list [for e-mails & snail mail, anyway] and writing a response to everything I get from them. I figure it makes them read lots of responses.
Don’t know which tactic is more effective.
[I also point out that I’m giving to “good” Democrats individually through ActBlue & Blue America, and that $$$$ might have gone to them]
FDR was a great and wise man, far above the craven, squirrely, poll-driven lot in the Congress now.
Unfortunately, there are a couple other major differences between this anecdote and the bipartisan political class of today.
1) they are not convinced by anything said in the Netroots - their world is the Village, they listen to David Broder.
2) They most definitely do not want to do it, if “it” is progressive change that inconveniences powerful interests.
3) uhm, lets just say whether we can make them do it is an open question.
One little suggestion that might get their attention is to imply that the support of passionate, politically engaged progressive cannot be taken for granted, it can be witheld, or directed elsewhere.
The (D) Party has taked everyone to the left of Joe Lieberman utterly for granted for the last 40 years or so, and it ha
