its not my party, k?

take it back? it never was a party of peace, social justice and the environment.

I mean, pick a decade to take it back to?

1990’s? thats when David Brower, a founder of the Sierra club, said:

” President Clinton has done more to harm the environment and to weaken environmental regulations in three years than presidents Bush and Reagan did in 12 years.“

from his renunciation of voting for the least worst at

http://www.earthisland.org/eij.....urnalID=57

the 1960’s? progressive changes of that decade were forced by outside social movements. Vietnam was the (D)’s war, remember?

the 1930’s? the New Deal, FDR? again, forced on the (D) by outside social movements, not ‘reform from within’.

then don’t we have to fix the problem and reclaim our party and our government? shouldn’t that be the priority? I believe that what the libertarian populists offer is a little like crack cocaine — an addictive panacea that will leave us dependent, more exploitable, and ultimately physically destroyed. If our party is broken, then we need to find ways to fix it… that’s the hard way, but I do believe that it is the only way.

yes, true to all that, I’ve been following the same trends leading up to this.

But, the (D) party is fully captured by the rich, powerful corporations who have the most to lose from real reform.

I mean, you see this, right?

so, where is this powerful benign state going to come from? The state you describe would have to appear ex nihilo.

rather, see Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine, favorably referenced by frontpagers here.

The shocks you describe will likely simply be exploited by those with the most to gain. They don’t care if they have to buy (D) or (R) politicians, and they do not have settle for the least worst - they are in a position where it is always better or best.

I repeat my plea for an email address or mailing address for Accountability Now PAC, so I can send a check. Even better, will the new PAC take PayPal? Tell all of us, maybe in a new thread.

It’s my belief that we’re heading into a period when strong, progressive government will be necessary. Climate change and all of its consequences, flooding, crop failure, out-of-control commodity markets, etc, etc, will require strong/big-government solutions on a scale we’ve not seen since the 1930s, possibly ever. The energy crisis will require directed government-sponsored leadership to redirect resources toward mass transit, new patterns of urban development, and new state-subsidized R&D and economic development incentives for new technologies. The attendant social disruptions, which will see both internal and cross-border population displacements on a scale not seen since the Dust Bowl (at least), will require a powerful, benign state to manage relief and resettlement efforts, social disruptions and inevitable tensions, education and training, and so forth. This isn’t the time to experiment with libertarian models.
