To answer your question about the job, Suz…
I’m almost through with week two. My supervisor’s boss asked today how/if I was liking it. I said heck, yeah, I’m liking it a lot!

Which is true. Everybody’s been super nice. Much of the group is new–less than a year. Many have more experience than I do with QC/cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices–an FDA thing), but I’ve got plenty of lab experience, so it’s not like I’m starting from nothing. We’re a small and quite diverse group. Mostly women–the 2nd guy in the group has only been there for a couple months, but a pretty significant age range.

Anyway…I feel like I’m finally starting to find my feet, so I’m starting to enjoy getting to learn a lot while having significant expertise to offer as well. And since it’s a very team-oriented environment, everybody seems OK when I say something that could be kinda bossy, but is correct from a safety or sterility standpoint. Doesn’t hurt that I try to say “sorry, don’t mean to be bossy, but latex gloves aren’t worth diddly as protection from chemicals and you’re handling nasty stuff today.”

And on those notes, I must wish all y’all the very best of goodnights. I’m trying really hard to get 8-9 hrs of sleep at night. No more mid-day naps for this workin’ girl!

Thanks, Suz and Wangdang. It sure is a relief to have landed on my feet–at long last. It’s been a long, tough slog gettin’ back on the horse that is full-time work in the field in which I’m trained and experienced.

Oh. And 10 mi door-to-door reverse commute in the am. It’s a couple miles longer coming home because of how the freeways interchange and how my entrances/exits are oriented, and the traffic is usually worse–which I sort of don’t get, but, well, there it is. And much of my usual/favorite shopping is in between work and home, as is my medical clinic/pharmacy. Now I just have to find a dentist I can work with. The ol’ teeth and gums are only getting worse…

Fun thing for me is to visit my girls and take them shopping and just enjoy being the mom to grown-up girls. I tell them that it is just about asset sharing. They can inherit it or they can enjoy letting me help them out now. I love it. If I do without a little something, well that’s okay with me. A pleasure, really, to see my kids enjoy something that they maybe would have done without. It’s fun. We are, I think, in for some tough times. I want my kids to enjoy a bit of fluff while they are being so responsible. You know.

Good pick here Suze. jane’s thing with barr was great, i thought (haven’t watched the whole thing, though). An odd couple, you would have thought not so long ago.

I see the FISA vote will be 7/8. I was kinda whipped on this and didn’t call Senator Spaceman but I’ll do it now — just to let him hear from one pissed off constituent and tell him if he thinks nobody’s paying attention to this outrageous bullshit he’s wrong. Since the vote is a done deal, do we still have to be polite when we call?

Been watching Carlin on HBO for 2 days now. Amazing guy. Genius, I think. Somemtimes better than others, sure. But great. I think he influenced not only comedy but the way people look at things — especially language (euphemisms in particular) and the absurdities of daily life.

its a lot easier in many ways – and harder in others – being the mom to my grown babies… not so much about parenting but about learning how to step back.

Carlin had a gift for making the truth hurt, but made you laugh while you did it. I think of it as akin to Mark Twain’s gift for snark and satire. You laughed your ass off at a lot of his little stories, but they were startlingly true in the absurdity. You still enjoyed it, and then you learned from it. If you got the joke within the joke that is. *grin* That’s the art of satire, and why i love it so much. A lot more than the more straightforward comedy.

Though i adore his stand up too, along with what little i’ve read out of his various books that he did lately. His stand up? I hadn’t realized i’d grown up on until i was a little older. (When your mom’s a fan, you hear it one way or another.)

I have a question about Opera. At your suggestion I started using it because IE won’t let me view YouTubes, and Firefox doesn’t like Digg.

But the problem I’m having tonight is, if someone puts a link in a comment to a YouTube, my habit is to click on the link, open the YouTube, then minimize the window and open a new window to FDL, while listening to the minimized YouTube.

But tonight–I don’t think this has happened before–it seems like it only wants to let me keep one window open at a time, when I switch windows, the other one (the link) disappears.

What’s up with that?

What I have been doing is clicking on the link to the YouTube, starting the YouTube playing, minimizing that, then going back to my desktop and clicking on the Opera icon to open a new window for FDL. Is there another way to do it?

OK, nahant, I think I am starting to figure it out…I just noticed that the Opera page has tabs at the top sort of like Firefox…I had opened a link to a Devo vid, and then a new window for FDL…when the Devo vid was over, I clicked on the Devo tab at the top and it took me back there…so I could have used that window (or browser?) again…but then I clicked on the FDL tab, and it brought me back here…so I think I am getting it.

Yes Julie is in the hospital getting tightness in the chest for a few days and today I made her call Kaiser and she got admitted and tomorrow they bring her to Santa Clara for an angio-gram and maybe an angioplasty. She is in good hands but can’t help but worry..

However, I had a pretty conversation with my sister when she was visiting, as to the preferences of husband and 2 kids. My 2 nieces.

Husband and younger child read all of the manuals, and all of the instructions.

Older child, is more like me- “Hey, Dad, get a life”. For myself, I keep the manuals, just in case I have to read them!

The good smoke waffing north from Carmel just for you and celebrating long overdue attention on your precious cottage. The not so good smoke drifting your way across the bay is from the Big Sur fires that has been filtering through the Monterey coast since the weekend yesterday…and not so celebratory. The fire-fighters are doing a splendid job and hooray for the Big Sur folk who have their backs and together they remain confident the worst seems to be over at last report. ;~)
