Just when you might have been thinking you could, oh, "relax" a bit and just worry about Afghanistan going to hell, there’s more bad news from Iraq today. As Alissa Rubin reports for the New York Times:
Two insurgent bomb blasts struck at pro-American Iraqi targets in Anbar province just west of Baghdad and in the northern city of Mosul on Thursday, and the police said at least 30 people were killed and 80 wounded.
Iraqi police officials said three American marines were among the dead in the Anbar attack, which came just as the American military command was preparing to hand control of the province, once considered the hotbed of the insurgency, over to Iraqi forces.
The bombings extended a pattern of multiple-casualty attacks in recent days that are clearly intended to kill local Iraqi leaders, in particular those who are believed to have collaborated with American forces against insurgents.
Both attacks on Thursday raised questions about assertions that Al Qaeda in Iraq and other Sunni extremist groups had been largely vanquished.
As Rubin notes, these attacks are by the folks the Bushites and their dwindling fan club thought we might have actually defeated in Iraq, as opposed to those who we bought off or who temporarily stood down for their own reasons as part of the pretend accomplishments of the "surge."
Those latter groups — the Sunni tribes involved in the "Bribing" "Awakening," and the Shiites loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr — have stayed quiet in part because they are hoping to pick up some opportunities for graft political clout in Iraq’s long-delayed provincial elections… which, um, continue to be delayed.
How long will they continue to pursue the carrot of political legitimacy before they realize there’s a stick attached that never gets any shorter? And as their patience frays, and the U.S. ultimately has to begin bringing home the extra brigades that were sent to Iraq last year, what’s going to keep the violence from spiraling further?
And what will happen if all this unraveling occurs right in the middle of a U.S. presidential campaign?

Aloha, Swopa!
The question is how will Obama and McSFB spin it if it does happen.
Swopa!!!
It is so frightening and so sad and so f’ing unnecessary that any of this is happening…the Neocon goal is to annihilate every resister of occupation and to render the country subordinate…shock and awe them into submission and steal their oil.
Forcing Iraqis into submission will never, ever happen…not in a thousand years.
Sick, sick, sick!!! GRRRRR.
They will be “busy” trying to spin why they didn’t stop the Neocons from attacking Iran.
Aah, Swopa, if ya really want the scoop on the violence, check out Aswat Aliraq…
This is a pertinent article…
Third today…!
is it unsurged or unstuck? Shrub will probably just say, “Let’s surge again! And again! Hit me! Hit me! Texans never give up! Never!”
jackie posted this profound view of the costs of this war yesterday:
The Cost of the War in Iraq vs. Spending on Solar Energy Research
BTW, Wanna Bet? ;-)
That pistol the female police officer is wielding in the photo doesn’t seem too powerful against an air strike, does it?
OT: Ruh-roh! Glenn Greenwald pointed out that Grand Vizier Keith Obamamann is a toady today. I think Dear Leader will have him in irons.

I’m beginning to think that the Failure of the Surge has been planned. Here’s my take on the whole sick plot in larger context:
After the 2006 elections shook the Republican Fable of Invincibility, and Darth finally figured out that his own private little war wasn’t going so swell, Rove, Cheney et al. came to the conclusion that they weren’t going to be able to conclude their nice little war with ticker tape celebrations of victory before Georgie is due to leave the WH.
So here’s what I think they decided:
(*) Stay the course! Full throttle ahead! It won’t work, but so what?
(*) Hand the War, and the increasing mess in Afghanistan and Pakistan, over to the Democrats, while Cheney smirks.
(*) Leave the White House with the country in debt up to its eyeballs, and the economy in a mess, thus constraining the next president’s choices.
(*) Iran emerges as the real winner and emerging power in the Middle East, as American forces bog down in Afghanistan and Iraq, much like what happened to the Russians in Afghanistan a decade ago.
Probable outcome: the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan consume the Obama presidency and tie it in knots. Republicans start campaigning in 2012 on the theme that the Democrats “lost” Iraq, Afghanistan, and the critical supplies of oil that we need, and “mismanaged” the economy, trying to blame as much of the economic mess on the Democrats as possible. The remaining Republicans in Congress engage in guerilla legislative tactics, like they did to Clinton, making Obama work hard for every inch of success.
The price of gasoline soars to $8 a gallon. The Republicans blame it on Democratic mismanagement.
In other words, the plan is to knee-cap Obama, saddling him with intractible problems, with an eye on a big comeback in 2012.

Good work, CTuttle! Any word on the possible new job?
Assuming Bushco/Israel wont escalate in either Iran, Pakistan, or both, this year.
I’m really getting disgusted with the run around I’m getting… I’m fast losing hope…! 8-(
The probability of Iraq unraveling during the election is pretty high. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.
The Surge Is Working? Not If You Read the Latest GAO Report
I think a large outbreak of violence in Iraq during the general election campaign would further help democrats! /charlie black
OT, Obama just said he would donate $2300 of his own money to Senator Clinton’s campaign. What a hero.
And did anyone else catch KO talking about man cleavage tonight?
Um, $2300??? When he collects millions/month??? Whaddda guy.
A personal donation, from his personal checking account. I think that’s the limit in a primary for a single citizen. Someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Iraq will be put under Martial Law just to prevent it from unraveling before the election.
KrisAinCa is right. That $2300 is the legal limit.
Furthermore, candidates are prohibited from using donations they have received to pay off another candidate’s debts. (If that weren’t the case, it would look a lot like bribery: “Here, take this $20M and get out of the race . . .”)
The most legal help one candidate can give to a vanquished rival would be to contact their supporters and ask them to give something to that rival’s campaign fund.
Being a trustee of a small historic preservation org, let me assure you that donors are very touchy about being acknowledged for donations. We recently had an example where a large donor got acknowledged for only a small part of its total contribution in the annual report because that’s the way the accountants thought it should be presented. If your interpretation of Obama’s contribtution to Clinton is accurate, he has NO command of the obvious. Everyone will look at $2300 exactly the way I did. So he’s either stingy or a moron, take your pick.
Iraq is not already undr martial law? Blast walls everywhere?
It’s the maximum amount he can donate.
-G
It’s basically under Martial law already… Maliki’s current operations in Basra, Sadr City, Mosul, and Amara are proof positive of that…!
Read my 22.
Actually the blast walls are really only found in Baghdad and around our various bases… But, there are checkpoints everywhere, nation-wide… Run by every entity from tribal chiefs to provincial police and the IAF and even the national police run by the Interior ministry…
It is so irksome to see Mission Accomplished again. What have we learned? Who will be telling us now that the surge is working; I heard it so just today from one of McC. advisors. I knew he was a fine fellow when it was told to us that he also had been advisor to a Mr. Rumsfield and Trent Lott…so glad to be in his hands and hear again that the surge is working. How dumb do they think we are?
MSNBC is reporting, via Dan Abrams, that he’s also asked his top fundraisers to drum up larger checks, 5 or 6 each was the quote, from big ticket donors. He’s essentially committing to helping her eradicate her campaign debt, which is admirable. The snarky “hero” line in my original comment was coming from my cynical feelings regarding his lack of leadership on the issues that MATTER, i.e. FISA.
As far as progress in Iraq goes, we all know the surge failed. The goals set forth were not accomplished. The things that have been accomplished through the surge – the current Repugnican talking points of reduced violence and increased security – were not the original goals. The surge was a desperate attempt to force the democratic process in Iraq toward fruition, and that hasn’t happened. What has happened is additional loss of American fathers, sons, mothers and daughters. Husbands and wives. Patriots. If it all fell down now, hopefully without further loss of American life, it would just be spit in the eye of the GOP.
And, with a little luck, the MSM would report accurately and tell the American people that the GOP idea failed utterly, at way too high a price. Commence landslide liberal victories in November, and REAL change in Washington.
Bum city.
“The probability of Iraq unraveling during the election is pretty high. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.”
I have this image of a car race. Bush’s car starting to blow smoke out of the exhaust, the engine is knocking, one tire is flat, another is loose, andhe’s falling behind in the race. But does he pull in for a pit stop and concede the race? No! Its Pedal to the Metal! He’s gambling that he’ll make it to the finish line before his car throws a rod, falls apart and grinds to a halt in the middle of the track. Look! He’s “surging”!

Ecahn, got pics of your get-together with the pups to share? Did you have a wonderful time?
“… did anyone else catch KO talking about man cleavage tonight?”
erk. The only “man cleavage” I can think about is the one on the backside when one’s pants are riding too low. Brain bleach, please.
Bob in HI
Hence….North Korea, boys and girls! Lookie over here.
“Iraq will be put under Martial Law just to prevent it from unraveling before the election.”
What’s the difference between martial law and what they’ve got now?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Bob in HI
That’s a disturbing thought. Makes perfect sense though…
I did catch that. It was Black’s excuse for his “A terror attack would be good for McCane” comment. Not sure if the cleavage comment came from him or an operative. Apparently he was so distracted by cleavage that he made the comment. Keith points out that the journalist was a male.
In the past they put additional restraints on shopping and driving. The streets were closed down after six making check points unnecessary.
It’s the maximum allowed by law.
Asian markets are shaky..
The cleavage comment came from a gentleman named Murphy on Dennis Miller’s Radio this morning.
Paraphrasing: “There must have been some serious reporter cleavage going on there, otherwise Black wouldn’t have said something so silly.” The reporter was a man.
Check it out: final FISA votes on July 8.
Marcy’s latest on FISA
Kris, are you new here? I don’t recognize your name except for within the last few days. Welcome! Where in CA? I’m in the San Diego area.
I’m actually the middle son of Mr. Cbl and cbl2. I’ve been internet-less for about a year (economy’s great!) and just got a new computer last night. But I’ve followed FDL via cellphone for over a year. I’m in the San Fran Bay area. Newark, to be precise

You have famous parents!
LooHoo,
Thank you, and all the pups who noticed, for making the young one feel welcome here.
A New DHF. We’re very proud.
Mr. Cbl,
LooHoo is a sweetie about such things. We also have benefited from the familial perspective of TexBetsy and SnarKassandra, the only other intergenerational family among Firepups that I know of.
Welcome KrisAinCA!
Bob in HI
Make that DFH.
I was about to ask…
(grin)
Bob in HI
Sorry Bob.
During Vietnam, Dave Obey [I worked for him then] and Andrew Jacobs [D-IN] would do charts and press releases comparing the cost, say, of a C-5A transport plane to education, housing, whatever. Effective way to get the point across.
I wish the Dems would do more of this.
