Another example of total lack of leadership within the party. His veiws are not that of the rank and file dem, he should be removed. I have a rep (lupinski IL) that is just as pathetic and yet the party protected him in the primary against a challenger. He’s pro life, pro Iraq and anti stem cell in a totally blue district.

Obey is a Roman Catholic. Most Americans are not. But that’s where this stuff comes from. Like the evangelical fundamentalists, he feels that pushing your ideology from an official position and betraying your oath of office is perfectly acceptable. We have to drive these people back under the rocks they came from. Repeat after me: SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.

I’m sure Obey thinks of himself as a God-fearing patriotic American. And I’m sure he would tell you he’s “a practising Catholic”. I went to parochial school, Catholic military school, Notre Dame and Georgetown Law School. I’m the same age as Obey and I’m not a “practising Catholic”, which would be to be a member of a Church which lets its priests ejaculate in the mouths of little boys and then have the assistance of bishops, archbishops, cardinals, and popes ( I’m talking about you John Paul and Benedict) to cover it up.

I would bet you that good Catholic Obey doesn’t like gay marriage, which would mean Pope Benedict can’t marry. (Didn’t know he was gay?)

It must be world upside down day. Obey, then I just heard Obama disappointed that they restricted the death penalty.

moondancer at 10–the restriction on the death penalty–all i could think of was people were going to only think of child rapists getting out of punishment–and all i could think of were the two young people i knew who were convicted of rape because the ’what’s in it for me’ parents of their underage girlfriends pressed charges because they got pissed off about something, so, even after dating their daughters, one of them for a year, they were convicted of rape..one had been ’footing the bills’ of the household and cut them off….so they got pissed and had him arrested for rape……..i wondered if people like them would have been affected by the death penalty ruling. they went to jail and will be sex offenders who have to register for the rest of their lives….i don’t know much about the case, so, don’t know if the victims had to be under a certain age for the death penalty or not.

my boyfriend in high school was older, and my parents could have done the same thing if they were nutty….scary….nicest guy in the world.

I’m not in his district but know his history quite well and know his district quite well. And some of the political realities he must deal with to balance the very conservative and yes…horrors of horrors…ROMAN CATHOLIC…members of his district with the more progressive types, of which there are many (hell, this is Wisconsin, not Manhattan or Marin County for heaven’s sake).

the number i came across was 400 million dollars for abstinence and no other info for sex education, i’d say that’s a lot of money to teach kids to stare at the moon from an upright seated position……..might as well throw it out the window goin’ down the highway. would do more good, at least can collectors would find it and spend it.

Also, if you look at the rapid decline in the size of the families from Roman Catholics, a lot of them are using artificial birth control. That’s also against Papal teaching.

Probably no papal teaching is more prevalent over the centuries than bulls and encyclicals against usury. Recent popes have had no problem overturning their predecessors on that.

OT, the Roman Catholic Church is arm-pit deep in qualified vocations. Why then is there such a priest shortage? Because the vocations are married people and women. Roman Catholic Church refuses to ordain ALL qualified women and men who don’t promise lifelong celibacy. Most other mainline Xtian denominations ordain both genders and celibacy wasn’t made “mandatory,” until Pope Gregory VII in the eleventh century. Prior to that it was always OPTIONAL.

The result is that in addition to a raw shortage of numbers, the quality of Roman Catholic priests has really slipped. Even those who aren’t having sex with underage victims, simply are not very good. They can’t deliver a decent homily

The immense damage the popes have done on forced birthing is well documented on the liberal blogs.

It would be a big help to Democrats and the nation if we could get the Roman Catholic Church to open its hierarchy up beyond males who claim to promise lifelong celibacy.

Roman Catholics in particular, as opposed to “reformed” Xtians, those who followed Luther’s reformation, are frequently taught that there is some unbroken line of popes from Peter to Benny and the jets. That’s a historical crock on many levels.

Peter wasn’t the “pope.” James the Just, Jesus’ brother (and not one of the original 12) kicked his ass out of Jerusalem, which was the center of the “Nazarene” movement. James the Just didn’t think much of “you are Peter and upon this rock I build my Church.” That whole line was never uttered by Jesus. He died a good and pious Jew, never intended to start a new religion, but he did have new and different interpretations of the Jewish law.

Peter followed Paul to Rome, which was no-where in terms of influence on primitive Xtianity. The only reason Paul became so important was that Rome wiped out Jerusalem and Israel in 70 and 125 ce. It was only the Hellenized versions of early Xtianity, written in Greek, that survived (until Dead Sea Scroll discoveries in 20th century). All the great counsels, Chalcedon and Nicea for example were held in the East. The Eastern Patriarchs dwarfed the bishop of Rome in influence until much later in the Church’s history.

Apologies for the OT to the many, many FDL’ers who are committed agnostics and atheists. I intend no disrespect to you by expounding on these historical issues. Just trying to give “recovering” Roman Catholics a little ammunition, if they want or need it.

I don’t mean to sound rude, but this response makes no sense. How is pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into abstinence education — going beyond what the GOP was doing “not so much.” Not so much compared to what? His Republican predecessor?

And I’m sorry, being Catholic myself, I can tell you that not all Catholics want abstinence-only education in our public schools. If you’ve got polling to suggest otherwise, let’s see it.

Either way, it’s no excuse for dumping millions of dollars into a program that hurts our kids.

ok, if not a book, at least a series of essays on it……i have many times forwarded your comments to people who needed them before, one of them teaches art at a catholic high school. my best friend….amazing woman and artist………imagine that, art, really taught by an artist, in a catholic high school……..she manages to keep it open. somehow. she’s catholic and is not pleased with the new pope. she’s leaving the school this year due to issues……..they no longer care about the education of the students, just the money….she’s convinced they’re trying to close the school by making it fail. won’t be a part of it, and it’s her dream job, she’s leaving along with 6 others. used to be the premeire school in the city, no more……will take a while till people realize that, she isn’t going to be there when they do.
