Sorry I couldn’t be here earlier…this post is exactly what has been on my mind! I’m in a pamphlet passing mood for sure. I like the Don’t Shred on Me.

I was trying to come up with a play on Honor the 4th on the 4th but came up short.

I was also wanting to stick it to our congresspeople by advising upset constituents to send their grievance by certified return receipt which would require their staff to sign every piece of protest mail…sure it costs a little more but then they can’t just throw it in a pile. Cuz I’m really ticked.

I’ve got to get back to work, yet the idea I’m burning with is that we the public make the Democratic Cong. leadership the issue: every Congress-critter House Rep. must be asked repeatedly, Will You Vote Again for Pelosi & Hoyer ?? And make it clear that Yes is not the Right Answer!

For the Senators, I might soften it just a little on Reid, but charge hard at Rockefeller– Will You Vote To Get Rockefeller OFF the Intelligence Committee? Do You Think Reid Has Done Enough, Will You Look for a Leader More Willing To Fight to Defend the Constitution and the Working Class ??

We’ve got to make it an issue, in every Congressional Campaign !! And REALLY make it an issue when those leadership elections come up in Jan. !!

Speaking of the 4th of July, a several of years ago I had the idea to dress up in colonial costume and read a modified version of the Declaration of Independence listing the crimes of President George II instead of the crimes of King George III. For a variety of reasons, including a request from my Republican then-girlfriend not to “embarrass” her, I never actually did it.

I wonder whether a similar idea would work here: a sort of pro-America, pro-civil liberties thing. Perhaps reading the Declaration of Independence to attract attention then handing out fliers about your representatives’ position on FISA and ways to contact their offices? Being from California, I’d be targeting Dianne Feinstein, who is depressingly soft on civil liberties in general, and FISA in particular. Of course, walking up and down the beach in period costume would be fairly sweaty work.

I also don’t know how well such a thing would work on the East Coast, where, I imagine, period costume is much more common. Frankly, though, Southern California treats the 4th of July more as an excuse to go to the beach than as a patriotic exercise (until I went to school in New England, I didn’t even know there were 4th of July parades), so the novelty of anything patriotic might attract a crowd.

I spoke to Sen. Kohl’s office and was told that he supported the FISA bill, but wanted the litigation against the telecoms to continue.

I pointed out those positions are mutually exclusive, then asked if the Senator supported stripping immunity out of the bill.

I was told that, at present, Sen. Kohl does not support the Feingold/Dodd amendment separating immunity from the bill.

And the Senator plans to vote for cloture on the bill.

Weak.

Two dimensional critters from Congress…Inspires me to get a lifesize cardboard photo….Tape a small MP3 voice recorder and el cheapo speaker and record and replay the insults to the Consitution coming out of their own mouths.

Oh yeah..dress it up with a Scarlet C and a Screw.

You get my vote for best ‘two-liner’ of the day, perhaps for the entire FISA debacle … the not-so-sudden collapse of the (ostensible) opposition party’s spine. In fact, some of ‘our’ Congress critter’s are looking decidely two-dimensional these days. But then, all of the ‘Homeland’ has taken on a rather cartoonish aspect of late.
