The following wartime presidents had some combat experience: William McKinley, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson (based on questionable WWII mission), George H.W. Bush.

It seems safe to conclude that there is no direct correlation between combat experience and effectiveness as president during wartime. So, I recommend just not considering it as an important factor. Are we really at war, anyway?
