As bad as it has been looking for John McCain's prospects attracting Latino votes, fear not: He can always do even worse. For instance, the latest polling:
A new national survey of Latino voters shows Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama with a nearly 3-to-1 advantage over his rival, Republican John McCain.
The survey found that 60 percent of Latinos planned to vote for Obama, compared to 23 percent for McCain, while 16 percent were undecided. Latino Decisions, a collaboration between Pacific Market Research and University of Washington political scientists Matt Barreto and Gary Segura, conducted the poll by telephone June 1–12.
This was even before his two-faced appearance at a closed-door town-hall session in Chicago. And as a sign they intend to make immigration -- and McCain's phony strategy of trying to play both sides of the aisle -- a campaign issue, the Obama campaign jumped all over it:
As Dana Goldstein at Tapped observes:
If McCain has any enduring principles on immigration at this juncture, they're impossible to discern.
Actually, they're not entirely indiscernible. John McCain's one enduring principle, across a whole range of issues, is Whatever Benefits John McCain. If that's his political compass, well, no wonder he talks out both sides of his head.

Hi, David. That graphic continues to creep me out!
It’s encouraging that the Latino community isn’t going to be taken in again by McBu’ush. I never could understand why W picked up so many Latino votes, other than a) he has some Spanish, and b) maybe he lies more convincingly in Spanish than in English.
Thanks David.
digg
Obama leads by 1% among Hispanics in Florida McCain needs to win with bigger numbers than that to win Florida. Jeb is not going to be happy if Florida starts trending Blue.
OT but there is a great post over at Democratic Underground discussion the Upside of a low tax rate on the very rich which McPain considers as one of his center pieces of his Campaign. It is well worth the read and truly shows just how much Bush’s tax cuts for the rich really do to our country and the common citizen!
Thanks Boo I did digg David’s fine post.
We have to make sure and defeat McPain so we can reverse all the wrongs that the rethuglians have foisted upon the good people of our country.
Hispanics see the GOP as Lou Dobbs and Glen Beck, McCain can’t run away from them anymore than he can run from Bush.
There is a huge connection between rising levels of illegal immigration and provisions of NAFTA. Renegotiating that thing will go a long way towards solving the problem.
Provisions of NAFTA allow our mega-farm corps to dump products into the Mexican and other Central American food markets at below market prices. This has two effects. One - the Latino farmers are unable to make a living doing what they’ve been doing for centuries - subsistence farming with a bit left over to sell for other items.
Two - the products being dumped are often GMO stuff - which then contaminates the local crops - then the crops become round-up ready. Production levels drop since the GMO crops are not as prolific as the native/traditional varieties. Monsanto then convinces the local government to spray for ‘weeds’, essentially killing every plant that is not GMO. This ruins crops for export (the EU has banned GMO corn) and the government must then certify its entire crop as GMO and try to sell it to the few places that will still buy it.
Worse, the second generation of these GMO crops mutate into ‘monster’ plants that often do not produce any usable crop at all.
SO…the people are starving and one of the few options remaining is for at least one or more members to emigrate to the US to earn money to feed their family.
Progressive taxation proponent Robert Reich was on Wolf Blitzer’s Right Wing Blitzkreig Show setting Wolfie straight on taxes. Wolfie was one pissed-off elitist pundit. Wolf was trying to smear Obama for raising taxes. That’ll be the last time they have Robert Reich on Wolfie’s Warmongering Sideshow.
Whooee! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Wish we could get Reich on all the MSM channels to say the same things. Unfortunately, he won’t be invited anywhere after this. Destroys their McSlime lovefest.
Seems like someone could sue McSlime’s campaign for illegal campaign contributions for value of all the free, adoring press coverage/advertising he gets!
They were having a fit over HRC having Elton John doing a concert…meanwhile McSlime gets a fund-raiser paid for by a British lord…
Much appreciated.
I did not know this.
Is the EU buying anything GMO? What about the Canadian-grown GMO Canola Oil? They got tons of it growing in Canada. GMO soybeans are growing in fields in South America that were previously rainforest.
For anyone else, like me, who needed remedial work, GMO.
Very good link:)
Reich is teh awesome. He nails tax issues. He blasted Wolf out of the water. Reich says that people making 750k a year need to pay more taxes to make the economy function. Wolf had to shut up, say thank you and move on.
Mebbe C&L will have it. The look on Beard Stubble’s face was priceless.
Worse, the second generation of these GMO crops mutate into ‘monster’ plants that often do not produce any usable crop at all.
Interesting got a link?
What in the hell is wrong with the 23% who like McCane?
Maybe Reich could go on the business channel and talk to Kudlow and Maria about taxes. Maybe he could explain to them that McCain plans to keep the war going which is an expense, but McCain has no real plan to pay for the war.
Some of them are making 0ver 750k a year. Some others are just brainwashed by too much tv and radio listening.
If your lawn man is waxing nostalgiac for Reagan days, he’s been listening to Rush Limpballs.
I love that guy. He’s the best thing left on NPR.
Authoritarian Personalty Disorder? Minds afflicted with Magical thinking? A schooling that taught Memorization of facts over critical thinking? A tendency to blame others for their own failure’s. A lack of good mental health coverage in this country?
I’m sure that there is more:)
A ton of stuff about Monsanto and GMO contamination and problems was covered in a French (yeah, French!) documentary called “The World According to Monsanto”.
http://wideeyecinema.com/?p=105
The ‘monster’ plant stuff is toward the end of the film. The scientist doing the work on this showed what happens. The original insertion of the Round-up Ready gene is controlled in the lab (why Monsanto forbids seed-saving) But in subsequent generations, it ‘wilders’ and shows up anywhere. She did the same thing to a flower and then showed a bunch of the ‘wilders’. Horrid. Another researcher who was working to try to preserve the traditional corn species showed some of these ‘wilder’ plants as well. Corn cobs attempting to grow out of the top of the plant - and not being successful obviously. He was using this ‘monster’ trait to train the local farmers to remove and burn any plants like that they found.
Teh stupid. More drilling will cure oil prices and global warming is a hoax, b/c its still cold in Alaska.
Never mind Hispanics I wonder what Older voters will say when they find out John wanted to privatize social security. Then not even the second coming of Jeb could save Florida for the GOP.
Arghhh! watch later I just had lunch dumb DUMB move on my part! Thank You very much though Lokywoky!
I think most of the canola from Canada comes here. The soybeans from SA, I really don’t know.
But the EU has banned GMO corn and a few other things for human food - Monsanto is appealing, naturally.

I wish our folks would start saying, “Well, we’re gonna raise YOUR taxes, [elite pundit name here]. We’re gonna lower almost everybody’s taxes, but rich folks like you are gonna have to start paying their fair share.”
This is a real opportunity to capitalize on Americans’ growing perception of the media as out-of-touch elitists — remember the outrage over Charlie Gibson’s harping on the capital gains tax and raising the Social Security tax cap on wealthy earners? It might actually shame the pundits into either telling the truth (ha!) or at least not asking these stupid questions that frame Democrats as tax-raisers.
This list is not exhaustive.
I would add the MSM
and fungelicals
Thank you.
Some university poll, I can’t think of the name right now but I will, tracks three swing states, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Last week, Obama is now leading in all three. His margin in Florida is within the margin of error but in the other two he’s out of it already.
What makes you think Jeb is still popular in Florida? Most folks understand that he left the state an economic mess and that a lot of the problems they’re having now are directly attributable to Jeb’s policies.
Any numbers on what would be more expensive giving every American Healthcare, rebuilding the roads and bridges, and going green with power and cars, over the short term, in the long term they would pay for themselves.
Or keeping the war in Iraq going, Bailing out the banks, keeping interest rates and the Dollar low again to bailout the banks, and the growing interest on the National debt because we know McCain like Bush won’t pay the debt down.
Here’s the poll linky http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x2882.xml?ReleaseID=1187
This outfit is known for their thoroughness so it’s trusted pretty well.
Sorry I was assuming but if Jeb isn’t popular in Florida, if the GOP can’t even make a fight there then this race is over.
If anything we are right now just forcing the GOP to spend money on a Presidential race that the GOP could have used to protect Senate and House seats.
Not that I’m complaining mind you.
Well, just the health care numbers would stagger you. We spend almost $7000 per person on health care (yeah, I know - and 47.5 million don’t have any health insurance - that doesn’t mean they don’t get at least some very expensive care).
Canada spends just over $3000. Britain just a bit less. Yes, those two systems have some problems. But think how much better they’d be if they weren’t UNDERFUNDED?
Anyway, we could fund ours for $4500 and have $2500 per person left over to spend on other stuff. Multiply that by the population in this country and you have some absolutely huge number.
C Everett Koop said (back in the dark ages) that if they would just pass a requirement to make every insurance company take the Medicare super-bill instead of their own separate little forms, it would save about $144 billion per year. That was back in the 80s - so imagine how much that one item alone would be now.
Hello????!!!!
The Florida numbers coming in for Obama are astounding considering he has not even campaigned there yet! Wait until he does.
So, yes, this is really big. States like this that the GOP thought were safe are all in play. McSlime was counting on the RNC being able to spend their tons of money on his campaign - and now they will have to.
Leaving the poor little GOPer senators and reps pretty well undefended.
Yay hooray!
The thing I am worried about is that ther is going to be a big floor fight at the GOP convention over the issue of ‘electability’. And that they dump McSlime (he’ll withdraw) and get somebody else. I don’t know who, but it will sure throw a monkey-wrench into the entire Dem campaign strategy.
The Florida numbers coming in for Obama are astounding considering he has not even campaigned there yet!
If I’m not mistaken, that poll was also concluded before McBrain came out in favor of off-shore drilling.
Attaboy, Johnny Mac - Brilliant! Thanks for handing us Florida!
RNC usually spends on the Prez race in Prez years. It’s the bankrupt NRSC and scandal-ridden NRCC that won’t have money for the Senate and House races.
McCain will have enough, probably more than he needs. Not sure Obama’s machine is gonna work at its peak if he sells out the Fourth Amendment this week, though. Notice how McCain is still shoring up the GOP base, while Obama gets ready to fuck over the Democratic base? What’s up with that?
Not unlikely, imo.. But they have no one worthy. No one.
One of the local Rethug consultants was on a panel last Friday with all the usual talking points about off-shore drilling. She pretty much got shut down by every other member of the panel. Floridians are not happy with Chain Gang Charlie or McSFB right now.
Thanks for all the answers about why some Latinos vote Puke. A former coworker from Puerto Rico was a Puke and I asked him how he could vote Puke given all the hate directed against Spanish speaking people. He said it was because he was “pro-life”. He married a snake handler and converted from Catholicism to snake handling. But I think of that as an exceptional case.
Greed Obama is risking the 70%er birds in his hands to try to get the 30%er bird in the bush.
The Catholic Church does treat Hispanics bad so many join other religions some more GOP orientated. The Spanish mass in my county was shifted from church to church each week across the county so no local church would become a Hispanic Church.
On the National scale the last Pope didn’t care how many Nuns were raped or killed defending poor brown people he thought that they were all commies.
Needless to say the Church now is not as respected as it used to be.
hi all from the new York state thruway. Just met julia, ecahn, sandero, selise, kathryn in ms, bluejeans, educated plaintiff, pat 9, juslin and assorted new friends. Had ablast.
oh shit. Its betsy. When did cassie log in via my phone????
and that is kathryn in MA
Hi Aunt Betsy!
Well I hope Cassie is driving. /s Hi Betsy!
mr julia is driving
Would it Rudy with his noun, verb, 9/11 speeches would drive tv ratings down though on the plus side it would cure my insomnia.
Mitt’s hedgefund business success in this economy would be looked at all weird when he would try and defend a tax payer bailout of the banks.
Huckabee though has a sense of humor and seems compassionate on the issues G.W before 9/11
Ron Paul though has people who are very enthused, net savy, and willing to volunteer and contribute if he were VP he could give McCain or any GOPer what they don’t have energy and cash!
Sneaky little thing, eh? Howdy, Tex! ;-)
Hi Cassie, Betsy!
Woo Hoo Cassie how was the Meetup?
I hope that Colin Powell endorses Obama soon. That could make a whole lot of difference, up and down the ticket.
Agree.
Reserving the priesthood to only one gender and those who promise to be celibate doesn’t help either. Roman Catholic Church has thousands of highly qualified candidates for the priesthood, who they routinely ignore, either because they are the “wrong” gender, married, or both.
The Papacy liked slavery, because slave owning Roman Catholics always were the largest benefactors. Your point about “commies” is well documented. JP2 and Benny16 effectively crushed liberation theologians, who were trying to help the poor.
Hi Cassie! Did you get real pizza?
But on the other hand the corporate wing of the GOP would chop off their right hand before letting Ron be VP.
Colin Powell and Obama on Oprah discussing the issues on Prime Time with Colin getting the VP nod as a ratings boost!
I’m not sure. After that sorry performance at the UN lying about all the WMD - what a crock.
On the other hand - there are people who still think he rocks - and would pay attention. He has said he like Obama and is following his campaign closely. For whatever that’s worth.
Powell committed war crimes by allowing this nation to make a war of choice on a civilian population under pretenses he knew at the time to be false. Obama would be wise to steer clear.
You’re kidding, right? You would vote for a ticket with Colin Powell, after he went to the UN and helped Chimpy lie us into the war? Say you’re joking!
I hope that Colin Powell endorses Obama soon. That could make a whole lot of difference, up and down the ticket.
Can I split my presidential and vice-presidential vote?
Allowing? HE ENABLED IT!
I thought it was a joke.
Just a note for folks - TexBetsy logged off her phone as Cassie and can’t get logged back in as yet but she wanted folks to know that she will return later…
Not a problem all he has to do is blame Bush and say he was lied to and ignored which is something I think Dems would believe.
Besides Colin as VP would set up a media wave of questions about whether McCain would pick Condi.
I want the MSM talking heads to talk about how Condi would not help McCain with African American voters it would show that you need policy and ideas not just gender and/or skin color to get Dem votes.
As opposed to racist GOP voters who will only vote for the right gender, race, religion candidate. I want the MSM to discuss that contrast.
I didn’t say Powell for VP, I said endorsement. Lots of militay folks and regular voters think a lot of Powell. I would like to hear his side on the UN talk, if there is one worth hearing.
ThingsComeUndone said VP. I hope you’re joking, Things!
How ’bout:
“I fucking LIED… I’m SORRY!”
That’s a start
Every U.S Senator had access to the same intel that went into Colin’s speech the claim that they did not read the intel or that they were restricted by Bush in the time they could read it just makes all their votes for the war more sad and that includes Edwards.
All Obama has to do is pull an Edwards and say if he knew then what he knows now he would not have supported the war.
He has already said it was something that ‘he was not proud of’. He is also something of an enigma about his politics. Even though Bush picked him for SOS, he has never actually come out and said - and his public statements continue to be that way. Interesting.
Powell apparently also did say no to a couple of other pieces of so-called intel that he knew had no support at all and did not use those things in his UN speech.
Wasn’t Colin on the Joint Chiefs prior?
Think he had a tad more intel than the average Joe?
NOT Liebershit
I think maybe so.
Lets remember the Senate had a lot more information about the war than we did yet we opposed it from the start. Colin was never a real player for Bush he was a salesman who got played.
During Gulf War I, Powell was the JCS…!
Every Senator had access to the NIE prior to the vote. Most of them (HRC comes to mind) did NOT even go read it. Most of those who did (Dennis Kucinich comes to mind and Barbara Lee) voted against. They had plenty of time to read it - and the ones who did found out early that the whole thing was a sham.
That’s what I’m saying. He had the security clearance, need to know and everything else.
He has no cred whatsoever in my book.
Period.
My feeling is that he should have resigned, given that he already found that some of the ‘intel’ wasn’t worth a hill of beans, how could he have trusted any of the rest of it.
If you really feel strongly, you don’t go along, you refuse to be a part of it.
Larry Wilkerson, Powell’s former aide-de-camp, wrote that Powell had questioned Tenet; “Is that all you’ve got…?” Later, he told Tenet that you’re going to be seating right behind me during the UN testimony…!
It was beautiful to hear Powell’s right hand guy on Friday.
Gotta go the the grocery re-stock place or I won’t have breakfast tomorrow.
Later!
The House and Senate did nothing when Bush decided to let Ossama go free and instead attack Iraq. Colin left the administration granted after such a time that his leaving would not hurt Bush, but what has our Dem house and Senate members done about the war that makes them better than Colin?
Colin left when he saw he had no real power and couldn’t change things. The Democrats have the majority they could change things but they do nothing!
Seems to me they are all equal losers as VP but show me a better choice besides the antiwar Dems Edwards, Dennis and Richardson are any of them even being considered for VP?
If not then Colin is as good as anyone else the Dems got.
C’mon, Powell had to have know that was bullshit. Those pictures of the “biological weapons trailers”? C’mon. He could have resigned instead of going to the UN shamelessly with that bullshit and the invasion may well not have gone forward.
I believe that Raven has a few choice things to say about Powell - where is he?
Anyway he won’t choose Powell, it wouldn’t be a “balanced” ticket. He’ll choose Hagel.
Powell, Congress, Powell, Congress…. Same intel? I THINK NOT!!! he had friends in low places.
Who went to the UN?
Who Lied his ass off?
No sympathy here.
Sorry
new thread upstairs
A picture of a building is a picture of a building did he know what was inside? None of the information given for the war on Iraq was good Colin like the Senate and the House didn’t make a fuss about the weak case for war.
I’m sure Colin knew more than the Senate but can you really say the Senate had just reason to vote for war?
Nobody has clean hands on that question who was in Washington then.
I agree. They knew it was bullshit, they let the Pukes scare them into voting for it. Remember the atmosphere in the country after 9/11? All the Pukes had to do was say “boo” and the Rats would jump.
Really Hilary doesn’t even read the intel supposedly but she still votes for war. Is intentional ignorance worse than deception? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Hilary if you remember wanted to keep troops in Iraq I guss she still hasn’t read the intel.
Este McCain es un cabron y un mentiroso. Para el los latinos no somos mas que sirvientes para sus propositos.
I’ll drop talking about Colin as VP since everyone feels so strongly about his possible connection to war crimes and definite selling of the war with fake intel.
But I don’t want to hear any more talk about possible VP’s who are not strongly against the war or are Center on the issues. Because then we might as well chose Powell he can bring in votes, talk good, and has more realistic chance of getting Obama 30%er votes than Obama supporting FISA, or Hilary supporting the war did.
I made no reference to Hilary whatsoever in my little tantrums above. I am not sure why the comparison. I only voiced my extreme displeasure at one Mr. Colin Powell, former Chair, JCS, more fucking REAL intelligence at his disposal than probably Gee Dub (Although I don’t think Gee Dub would really know what to do with real intelligence, but I digress). Even at that time. Chose the dark side rather than the truth.
I guess you are like me I can’t take Blitzer,He’s always trying to make something out of nothing, case in point,At Tim Russerts funeral(RIP)he was making so much of the fact that Barack&JohnnyMac were sitting next to one another and talking, trying to make the point that the funeral had made them set aside their differences.Hey Blitz does the word respect mean anything to you?
This can’t be. I remember seeing Pat Buchanan discuss the huge rift between hispanics and blacks during the entire democratic primary.
