Spanky And Our Gang with I’d Like To Get To Know You.
It took me four months of reading FireDogLake before I finally got up the nerve to post a comment which, if I remember correctly, started off with something about how I had not commented before. I remember typing several comments before then but never having the nerve to press that submit comment button. I finally worked up the nerve one afternoon and, with fingers and toes crossed that I wasn’t breaking some blog protocol by jumping into the middle of a conversation, I said fork it and pressed the forking submit comment button.
It still brings a smile to my face when I think of how warmly I was greeted by Mrs. K8 and then others in the comments. Tonight, I want to reach out to those who have been hesitant to join us in the comments. We’d like to get to know you.

See, lurkers? Feel the love. Come on in, the water’s fine!
Hi Suzanne,
I don’t comment often, but it’s nice to see everyone tonight.
I had to go outside for awhile to calm down after the events of the day. ;-) Sometimes it’s good to take a deep breath.

cc! Long time no c! how is u’z?
we need snacks and beverages for the new commenter pups and tex is on vacation. please don’t feed the nsa monitors – they don’t get a forking drop or a crumb any more and the only wave the forkers are gonna get from me is of the one finger variety
hey s… nice to see ya again. i’m thinking tonight’s thread is like a breath of fresh air after today’s events.
Enjoy the Friday and the Weekend and then come Monday…, get involved again! I was planning on donating to Obama but now probably just progressive candidates.
Hey, Strategerie! Good to see you agian. Late Night is the deep breath I’ve been needing all day.
Owe you the bev of your choice.
Nuts to blue dogs.
I had to take a break from the day, and in searching for a respite, I turned to that which I always do-music, in this case, the final movement of the Mahler Third Symphony. I weep at the ending, not because it is sad, but because it is so hugely uplifting. The man simply cannot let go, and for me, it reminds me no to as well. Hang on! Hang in! Humanity is worth it.
Could someone come over here and fan me – it’s 86 in my house.:(

Yes, we do! I’ll look around in the pantry if someone else will tend to the jukebox… Hello All, and welcome new lurkers.
I’m good, thanks AZ. Nie to see you too. Same ole same ole here.
i would prefer an honest claim to one side or the other over the forking middle.
Today was a setback yes but that doesn’t stop the struggle. This links to a photo for sale on eBay. It is an old SF Examiner archive photo from 1938 of people picketing against Hitler in front of the German Consul in NYC. At the time they were protesting for small peoples, enslaved peoples. Look at the three men in the background on the steps of the consul. They are like the Bushies today, they think nothing can stop them. It took awhile, it took blood but they were stopped.

This is the only thing in the middle of the road.

Down here, mostly dead armadillos.
that’s excellent news, ccmask
Dennis Kucinich is going around Pelosi – he has an official petition for the impeachment up now.
http://impeachment.kucinich.us/petition/
I know, the ‘conviction’ won’t happen, but the investigations that get triggered, plus if an impeachment proceeding is underway, Bush cannot pardon himself, and if Cheney’s articles are underway, he cannot pardon him either.
So, it really needs doing.
Yellow strips and dead armadillos!
Geez – won’t complain any more.
Dayam, Dr.! I owe you a fizzy, too.
Busy being a cookbook editor for the last couple of weeks but almost done, Thank Gawd!
Warm around here right now, 90 is hot here but it still cools at night.
Here in western Montana we matched you. Only 10 degrees above normal. I guess it is an improvement over the snow last week. May hit 95 tomorrow.
A lovely first course!
Only fizzy drink I drink is beer. 8-)
ya might as well sit next to that soda machine the way things are going for ya tonight, wangdang
I saw a really strange animal here in Florida last night. It looked like a very very large cat, with very short hair and it had a anteater or aardvark look to it. Very slinky. It scared the hell out of me at my back door last night. I have absolutely no idea what it was.
beer
You are a wise man.
Hope you don’t mind cheap beer.
I’m getting one of those and it’s all Betsy’s fault!

Beware of NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including naproxen and ibuprofen). Spring a hole in your GI tract and you even have to watch out for bubbles.
Not for long, I am afraid! There is a hops shortage. I heard that Sam Adams actually used their purchasing power to buy more than needed then made the surplus available to the microbrewers at their price. It is said that at the end of the next decade beer shall be prohibitively expensive and unaffordable by the average consumer, that will get the man in the streets attention!. Enjoy microbrew at any rate! Sierra Nevada Pale Ale…
Have we any bluegrass fishermen?
Ocho Rios as in Jamaica? Loved the banana porridge there. Fondest memories.

We need to go to Zax and get glasses, the kind you drink form and drink real beer. You will be miraculously cured of that embarrassing Miller Light habit.
Creepy.
Hey ccmask! Nice to see you.:)
hi to everyone!
And ladies, this is for us — Alsatian dry white wine! Pinot Gris.

Americans may finally take to the streets then.
I got a book. Gonna grow my own hops and brew my own ale.
Take that, Big Beer!
(Hope I can grow enough hops in my little yard and in this heat.)
Hey Margot…Happy Friday night under the lights.
Memory is food… and other things.
Just quick stop by as I am cooking cheese Stuffed Pablano peppers wraped in peppered bacon, NY steaks and salad… too hot to do much more that that… but do enjoy the ribs I sent you:>)
I always liked Molson when I used to drink beer. Great boilmaker too.
Call your local humane society to get their advise. And share pictures!!! Congrats on your job. What are you doing?
Whats a Zax? I already have glasses, I worked for the Shiner distributor for 11 1/2 years.
drooling
I lurk way too much
*scribbles madly on handy tablet*
Hi Margot!
After one of the most depressing days in years, let’s have some fun. The weather was beautiful today, and I felt wonderful being outside with my face to the sun.
hey virgotex…. now you are not a lurker anymore
welcome and if ya have any questions, just ask
Not anymore!
Hiya Suz & pups and new commenters!
Yes. You do! *g*
Last weekend a friend cooked dinner for me. She put a whole eggplant in the oven for 1-1/2 hours. When it was soft she took it out and cut it in half, stuffed it with a mixture of sauteed chop meat, whole tomatoes cut up, garlic & onions; then put it back in the over for 1/2 hour. It was delicious.
thanks Suzanne, and newtonsr
hey jofish
ccmask, that sounds yummy and i don’t even like eggplant
Welcome virgotex
Hey Margot, good to “see” you
Welcome to the club! Hey!

ccmask, that sounds delish. Roasted eggplant is of the gods
So. Are you a Virgo from Texas?
good for you
one day, i will be where you are right now… but i’m not there yet.. we have lots of snack foods to help with that hand to mouth thang…
Yup to that! Back in 1982 I helped with a Big Green Intiative fund raiser in Davis, CA park. We poured the first Sierra Nevada sold out of a keg. Tasted mighty good on a hot day!
Beer cheaper than gas? Not at my pub!
wangdang, yup
Well then, stop it! Speak up, virgotex.
gov’t mule
Good luck on the first 14 days. After that the nicotine is gone and you’re just stuck with habit.
How’s it going?
Ratzis usually are!
We have a little Central Texas group, anywhere near that?
wow. history. and you were there.
This is my usual beer. Purely local. I also like this. More Rocky Mountain high. 8-)
January 21st, we all chip in for a bag of cement.
;>)
Not smokin gets a little better after six weeks….Then in a year it gets quite a bit better. After two years you only think about wanting a cigarette about ten times a day.
Not anymore! Now you got to comment!
hey db
And I’m Telling You==Jennifer Holiday in 1982 in Dreamgirls
Good on ya! I quit 12 years ago after 30 years of 2-3 packs a day. Best thing I ever did (except maybe my son).
I was drinking it too! *g*
mmmm, Fat Tire…
I also like Yuengling Porter. Smoked chocolate.
Me, I should lurk more and comment less.
(Having said that:)
After today can I just observe that clearly, Democrat vs. Republican is not the correct axis along which to judge our elected officials?
and we will nag if you don’t. :)
I can’t link anymore but that Jen Holiday is the best you tube, I believe.
my real estate agent called to tell me the bumpersticker she saw in town today
01/20/09 end of an error
let me see if i can find it.. you talking about the grammy one where she was singing her heart about in a scene from the play?
I gotta go–my son is leaving for Washington tomorrow and he is still trying to pack. Gotta help! Later!!
yeah, that’s exactly where I am.
Yeah Suzanne…
Actually, I quit wanting a cigarette after about 3 months and haven’t wanted one since. The smell actually kind of nauseates me now.
I stopped after 30 years plus. After a few weeks, it wasn’t too hard. Good luck and keep us posted.
Hi Darkblack. Got any McCane to share?
this one ccmask?
LOL!
g’nite ccmask.. good to see ya again :)
Get some Vidalia onions, some balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper. Slice, sprinkle, inhale, eat. Helped me when i quit.
That’s good.
Speaking as the house soc*alist, you are correct. As David Sirota and others have said the real division is between the money party and the people party. The money party has all the Republicans and a lot of the Democrats. The people party only has some of the Democrats. We need to elect more people party candidates and fewer money party people (corporatists).
i liked it and so did she
Smoke? Don’t mind if I do.
;>)
McCain, Loo Hoo? – Oh, behave.
Re: beer, I just discovered Real Ale. Love the Rio Blanco pale ale. I’m more of a dark brew woman usually, but this stuff is great, very hoppy.
Well, as long as you’re not my ex-husband, click on the little blue “f” by my name and send me a facebook message if you want to hook up with Texas Betsy, greenwarrior, gnome de plume, nonplussed, newdealfarmgrrrll, althespook and a cast of assorted other weirdos.
AZ Matt- so what’s this cookbook thingy you mentioned of late?
*scribbles madly on handy tablet again*
I’m with you, Dr. ….. Dick. There’s a class conflict (…because ‘war’ is such an ugly word…) reality at the base of the whole Rethug program.
will do wangdang, and not to worry about the ex husband factor
Just saw your 160 and figured as much. *g*
Slice the onions, sprinkle the vinegar, inhale the salt and eat the pepper? Sounds like my usual diet.
;~P
Actually, I’m not tweaking that bad. Jonesin’ a bit maybe.
Thanks everyone for your support and positive vibes.
Gotta get a beer
Matt,
I made my first and last donation to Obama a couple of weeks ago of which I told his campaign as I unsubscribed from their emails today. I’ll vote for him in November, but he won’t get any more money out of me. After 20-years working with NSA, FISA was my number one issue and the primary reason I visit this blog, that and you all appear to be really nice folks.
For Suzanne,
Here is a Sprecher Root Beer for your evening in keeping with only offering the best to you.
I wish you all a great evening and good night.
Good god! I only recognized Cindy Lou. Who are the other blonds??
Great one, DB.
i hope that goes without saying. yummy. i also liked anchor’s liberty ale. haven’t had a beer in months. but it’s summer and i think i’ll see if i can’t find something good for the weekend.
http://chocolategod.com/images…..darklg.jpg
In place of smoking, how about these?
Is e man, baby.
;>)
Howdy y’all !!!!!! Suzanne I dove right in my first night here cause the topic was something about young people.
I am in nj now and I love newyork but I am a little scared of how busy and crowded it is. Grandma and grandpa have a cool house.
Hey SueTRW, welcome.
thanks, suetheredwa, and g’nite
Hiya Cassie,
Other impressions? Do tell…
Thanks, darkblack… although I never got that desperate.
Hey, where’s my Ethel Merman?
;~P
hey cassie…. not all the readers are as brave as you.. i certainly wasn’t (laughing)
Zax
Demand a real New York pizza.
ethel?
Hey Cassie! Good to hear from you. Sounds like you have an action packed summer ahead of you. Big cities can be a bit intimidating at first, but they can also be really cool when you learn your way around a bit. I felt the same thing when I first went to Chicago from Oklahoma. City had as many people as my whole state.
Back in ‘96, the Hopi Tribe put out a Healthy Hopi Recipes cookbook based on traditional Hopi cooking but with lwess salt and sugaer stuff. They only printed 300 copies which wasn’t much. I got a grant last year to continue some research on Hopi Female Headed households and their ability to get traditional Hopi foods. As part of that I had found out about the ‘96 book aso put money in the grant request to edit and re-release it.
The original had no photos, wasn’t well laid out neither, no talbeof contents for example. So I had 2 Hopi ladies cooking some of recipes, taking photos of the results. Additionally I am getting the Hopi names of these recipes so they have both Hopi and English in the book. People here are looking forward to it and I am looking forward to that and just having it done. It will belong to the Hopi people and tribe not to the Univ of AZ who I work for.
virgotex – nice vid at the top of your page.
Hello from Sterling, CO.
i’m looking forward to it.. i love cookbooks
I wandered in on one of TRex’s invitations on Late Night myself. Just before the Late Late Night thing became a staple in 06 in the elections. I amazed that it’s been so long for me. I wasn’t so much intimidated as i didn’t have much to say that hadn’t already been said.
Anchor Steam, like Teddy, is one of the great things about SF!
A show of hands, how many proud Democrats are here tonight?
hey ofg
Evening, Suzanne.
Old San Francisco newspaper stuff reminds me of a difficult task I unfortunately let slide. My grandmother was a reporter for some newspaper in SF during WWII, and passed away recently. Was trying to find some of what she’d written, but no luck.
*raises hand*
But not too proud of many faux Democrats tonight.
Hey OFG!
I agree, newton, I just recently started listening to her.
All I gots is one finger
I haven’t donated to any Prez candidate yet and now don’t plan to.now We need good congress people first.
Wonderful post, Wangdangdoodle. Perfect entry to that ending.
I was going to look myself but my SO wanted to walk in the warm summer night and I just got back.
I hope others enjoyed it.
Thanks.
“The middle of the road is a sloppy place.”
Middle of the road is usually where you find road kill.
Hey OFG,
We miss you. How many hands? I have one, but not so proud.
Wow, what a neat project! I did a smaller one with the Hupa tribe in No Cal in 1992. Ours was a nutritional analysis project of the traditional diet compared to typical now. The Hupa are an interesting group that may be a remnant of the migration of what are now the Navajo. They have a huge rate of diabetes and we were looking for ways to help them reduce that with a return to a more traditional diet.
more and better democrats
This FISA thing, and the Obama nod…grrrr
Belgian?
When I was working for the Shiner distributor here in Austin, whenever our boss went to Belgium to visit the Chimay and Duvel breweries, we’d make him take an empty suitcase so he could bring back chocolate.
OFG, not proud of certain buzzards in congress but there are good folks here so not all is lost.
Suzanne how many new people said HI tonite?
only one?
A very qualified one – for our newest Blue America candidate and now House Member Donna Edwards and my fav guy, Dennis Kucinich.
we’ve had one brand new (virgotex) and several of our newer commenters are here also
grrrr is right, and tears were shed. I am not feeling so swell this day, and am happy to be here tonight.
Makes sense because many people migrated south from Alaska along the Pacific coast.
The only thing in the middle of the road is a yellow stripe… and Steny, and Rahm, and Jello Jay, and….
Power to the People! Death to the corporations! (figuratively speaking, since they are not living beings and therefore cannot die, but should not have any legal rights either for the same reason.)
Can I be new?
Bein’ all smoke free and shit?
Like Dr Bong(less)?
;~P
i’m wallowing in a big container of haagen-dazs dulce de leche caramel
Do you have any reports available? I would like to see what you have if it is OK.
How about I pick you up next week and we go?
Yes, Belgian indeed! If it isn’t dark chocolate, I don’t want it (well, I still like that white stuff…)
Lucky you. Where is ours?
— Crosley Bendix
Wow! Check with the tribal leaders to see if you can run an ad here for a week. I’d love to buy it.
That’s where I plan to put my own energies, and if I can manage to afford it, money. I really don’t get Obama’s gutlessness. Course, I’m not sure how the Democrat running in my district would’ve voted on FISA immunity, when he’d answered some questions I asked him, his answer to that part of it was kind of nuanced.
Aloha, virgotex! Nice to see another virgo join the Lake…! ;-)
sorry, it was either dive into the ice cream or melt… but it is down to 83 now inside
That’s the very favorite ice cream of The Sweetie. That and the new chocolate peanut butter flavor. Try the cinnamon dulce de leche.
I tripped when I saw a Shiner truck in Baltimore! I almost wrecked my car. I told my friend from Westinghose what the deal was, but he had never heard of it of course and just thought I was nuts. This was in maybe 1994/95?
Thank YOU, Starbuck! I find the best music from FDL posters.
Have you tried the new Ben & Jerry’s 2 oz sizes?
That’s (by my calculations) only $64.00 a gallon.
I’d rather smoke.
;~P
it comes in cinnamon? gonna have to look for that one – thanks hmmmm
Spanky McFarlane, like Cass Elliott, had one of those voices and stage presences that just wrapped you up in it and held you.
Like a 10 year old boy caught in his Great Aunt’s bosums at every family reunion (see Greg Brown’s song about same can’t recall the name of it) Spanky’s voice jumped up and WALLOPED ya.
She had one of the best voices in her time . . . for the AM/FM pop genre which was WIDE open in them days.
I miss that voice, a LOT!!! And Cass Elliott’s, too . . . but Spanky, she had something unique from Cass . . . she never got the kudo’s she deserved, but I loved her music.
Good call, Suz . . . you old hippie, you . . .:D
That is a very nice vid. Especially for tonight. Mellow.
Their language group is the same as the Navajo, and all the other tribes along here are a different one, so they came at different times or from different places obviously.
I sure had fun exploring the traditional diet. I got to participate in the White Deer Dance celebration and that was pretty special. Made friends with several elder women. They all have tattoos on their chins. It is a vertical stripe pattern, with the number of stripes an indication of their status in the tribe. Both of the women who helped me had three – the highest level. They were really neat ladies. They make the most intricate baskets and I learned how to cook acorn ‘hush puppies’ in a skunk cabbage leaf under the fire pit.
Another Virgo…I’m in good company.
It’s 80 inside here too, Suzanne. Two computers running don’t help matters.
De nada. I live (as I may have occasionally mentioned previously) to serve.
An old coach told me it is better to run mad than run scared. To those Dems who fear their own shadow, trembling like a dog crapping peach pits, we are mad. Clearly phone calls, pleas and petitions are lost on them, the fear of the other side causes them to ignore the side they are on.
We will donate and fully fund every possible venue to expose their chickenshit little asses for what they are, unworthy representatives.
Out with ye and begone, feckless wimps.
I’m working my way up to that feature, dear Doctor.
;>)
Have a good evening, folks.
I can’t sell them as they are being paid or by the grant and don’t know yet how many we can print. The Office of Committee Health Services of the Hopi Tribe will do the distibution. If there is an extra I will save it for you. Just remind me in couple of weeks. mateo at ag dot arizona dot edu.
hey CTuttle!
thanks, larue.. i always had a soft spot for spanky and our gang… they had some great feel good in a hippie kinda way songs
When you can set aside the time ( a very long symphony) it’s worth while. The story behind it is amazing.
Mahler was very aware that he straddled 2 centuries, and look at us. We not only straddle centuries, we straddle millennia!
g’ntie db – always a pleasure to see ya again
What? You soarang for a vaporizer?
I’ll have to see what I can find, it was a school project, and at the time I had an ancient PC with the 5″ floppy discs. I have moved from California to Florida and now to Montana, shedding stuff at each stop due to reduced circumstances and smaller and then much smaller living spaces. I have a couple of boxes marked ‘misc papers and stuff’ that I haven’t unpacked so will check in there to see if maybe…
Yep. Out with the old and in with the new (progressive).
Nite!
Night DB.
“On The Road to Armageddon”?
Do you guys think that the privacy/spying/government/corporate issue was bound to happen due to the explosion in technology. Are we a species grappling with its own success with electricity? Sort of like dealing with our own success with fucking and making too many other humans. We are in a perfect storm of too many humans and to many 0’s and 1’s. I hope I don’t get epu’d.
Thanks! Even a hard copy would be good.
hahahahaha
yes
Nice work as always, DB! No brain bleach necessary this time…!
Just found a Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale behind the cheap bag-in-a-box chablis in the beer fridge out in the garage. Must be about 7-8 months old. Aged well, tastes better now than it did around Thanksgiving.
hey mary mcc… since the idea for this delurk thread came from you, how did i do, dear?
Glad that C2H6O has no effect on me whatsoever! I may have tied my fingers in a knot that time. Must spell check.
Simple question. Simple answer. I knew we were related.
*scribbles on ever present handy tablet for future reference*
Jut off the top of my head, the traditional diet was excellent. It was the SAD thing that got them in trouble.
If you build it, they will come.
AZ Matt- thanks for the details, and for your awesome cookbook work. Any chance you could create a blog for this? And link to your FDL name? Blogger is a free source. I’d love keep up with the progress on this cookbook effort.
Ya done good my dear. ya done good. I loves me some Suz.
I don’t know why, but that reminded me of a time I’d bought Sunny Delight, and it turned out it had fermented. Was surprisingly tasty! A bit fruitier than my preferred boozing habits, but still, very tasty stuff.
Way too many humans. Ma Nature will take care of that, though.
I think you’re exactly right, marymcc. Been mulling this quite a bit lately. Monkeys get smart enough, they get themselves into all kinds of truly awful trouble, all of their own making. Can we as a species evolve the self-control and elegance that we need to survive fast enough to avoid being trapped in a cage borne of nothing more than our own primitive worst emotions?
We should keep fucking and stop making so many babies. And we need to understand electricity better.
aw, thanks, mary… you just kicked me in the ass enough times about it – just had to find the right song
The staple carb is acorns, rather than maize for the southwest people. They also have a variety of berries, grasses and leaves, and of course salmon, venison, elk (not now but back when) for protein.
Thanks for letting me vent. This issue was supposed to be dead. I am glad we have the “Tres Amigas” in Christy, Jane and Digby. It will be much better when spineless Dems and all rightards refer to them as Atillas De Broadzillas.
Goodnight and keep after them.
Hannibal,
are you from new orleans?
eureka has an unclaimed zed upstairs, pups
One writer referred to the first movement as “rock” music, and for totally different reasons….hint: Do not expect the rock beat! :D
+1 on that.
E-mail me at mateo at ag dot arizona dot edu and I can send you an electronic version when it is done. It is at Iowa State University getting formatted right now.
g’nite ofg
Fermented like all the way to orange wine? Otherwise, I’ve been there, spewed that. *g*
Nope, San Diego.
I’ll drink to that!!
I don’t know if you’d call it wine, but it had some fizz to it, and gave a nice buzz to boot.
I’m of to bed. Got up at 5:30 in a futile effort to fish this morning and it is catching up with me. Take care and enjoy.
I am originally from the Redding, CA area so am some what familiar with the foods available. There was a Wintu summer camp site across the creek where I lived as a kid.
I think I figured out what happened with FISA as far as Obama is concerned.
I call it corner hooked like in pool when you are with a lye that had to chance to sink a ball so you have to play position umtil the next shot.
