The best explanation I’ve seen for the Democrats’ behavior is that at least some are complicit in past wrongs and need this to cover themselves just as much as the Telecoms do.

See my 152 above. What the Democrats are doing today is no fluke. It is what they have been doing for the last 7 years.

There are important differences between Democrats and Republicans. For instance, Democrats sit on one side of the aisle and Republicans sit on the other.

Yes, Obama is better than McCain but as his failure to lead on this issue shows he is no progressive or even Constitutionalist. And given that this is the Congress he will be working with, does anyone seriously think (unless he really changes his approach) that he will be able to roll back the excesses of the Bush years, undo its failures, and address the pressing issues of global warming, energy, the economy, and healthcare?

I’m only following this through Christy’s reporting and the comments here, but it does not make sense to me. To whom are the Democrats responding?

Is there a Silent Plurality out in Constituent-Land which has been pressuring so many of the Congressional Democrats? I hadn’t heard about that happening.

Do Congress-critters simply hang together, R’s and D’s, and is this what they do in the interest of comity?

Has somebody told the D’s that nothing they ever propose in the future will ever get support from across the aisle unless this bill is passed the way the WH wants it passed?

Are we (I include myself, if you don’t mind.) so far out of it that we don’t realize that we are not even in the visible part of the political spectrum?

Somebody help me understand this, please.

Suspend habeas corpus, check!
Neuter Congress, check!
Legalize torture, check!
Suspend the 4th Amendment, check!
All systems go. You are free to move about the country and resume your shopping.

and Philippe Sands reported that Harman said “We don’t expect it to be pretty” regarding the ‘enhanced interrogation techniques”.

I am so beyond disgusted.

gotta go to work -

prolly a good thing as if I stay put I’ll wind up in ER or Jail

Firedogs - keep up the calls, faxes, and letters - especially to Harry, Nancy, and Senators - they think it has died down from yesterday

folks anxious about calling - start with the Obama Campaign line

very nice, sympathetic folks

you’ll be giving Harry and Nancy strong but civil grief in no time at all

Word is that Obama ‘owes’ Pelosi and others on something - possibly getting Clinton to suspend her campaign, is my thought.

The word I heard rhymes with Howard. There are always these explanations and justifications that are offered for why Democrats never do the right thing. But the truth is in the words of that American sage John Mellenkamp:

You’ve gotta stand right up for somethin’ Or you’re gonna fall for anything

I think it is clear which group our Democratic Congress belongs to.
