I read the news today, oh boy (h/t dansac) :
An aide to Gov. Chet Culver said Thursday that Republican presidential candidate John McCain ignored the governor’s request to cancel a campaign visit amid a massive flood recovery effort in the state.
"As a courtesy — and as we did for Senator Obama — we privately made an effort to make sure that Senator McCain knew that state and local resources were still being deployed to support the flood fight and that now may not be the best time for a campaign trip," Dillon said in a statement.
No kidding.
Senator Obama’s response was to work with state and local authorities to find out how he could best direct the efforts of his supporters interested in volunteering; armed with that information, his campaign has been sending out e-mails to inform his people of those cities not yet hit by the flood that could use help with sandbagging and other preparedness measures.
Senator McCain’s response? Blow off the governor and hold his photo-op.
Even better, per the Des Moines Register:
Republican presidential candidate John McCain opposed legislation last year that included money for flood control in Des Moines, which shows he is wrong to push for reforms to the congressional earmark system, a Democratic lawmaker charged Thursday.
[...]
President Bush eventually vetoed the bill, which authorized more than 900 navigation, flood-control and environmental projects across the country. A report on the bill said the Des Moines metropolitan area suffered more than $152 million in flood damage in 1993.
"The Birdland Park and Central Place levees on the Des Moines River failed during the 1993 flood event and do not provide reliable flood protection, placing nearly 200 homes and businesses at risk," the report said.
Every member of the Iowa congressional delegation voted to override Bush’s veto, the first override of his presidency.
McCain strongly backed Bush.
"This legislation is fundamentally flawed, authorizing nearly 1,000 new projects without any method for prioritizing the needs of our national water infrastructure," he told the Senate. He added that the bill was "full of pork projects and unchecked government spending."
Really, though, as I noticed last month when McCain used a wind-power facility for a prop despite his record of cutting funding for wind power, McCain’s just following in the footsteps of his master in the White House. A hallmark of the Bush administration has been to choreograph massive photo-ops with groups whose funding he’s about to cut. Another favorite thing is to pull firefighters and other first-responders off the job just to make him look good:
A group of 1,000 firefighters convened in Atlanta to volunteer with the Katrina relief efforts. Of those, “a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight headed for Louisiana. The crew’s first assignment: to stand beside President Bush as he tours devastated areas.”
What wonderful stagecraft! Leni Riefenstahl would be so proud, if she knew.

“that’s … not … change … we .. can…believe …in” (rictus grin)
John McCain is welcome to come to Smalltown, USA and help de-bag the 73,000-some-odd sandbags our County put out. And we’re the lucky up-river folks.
I’ll shake his hand if he shows up and puts in one hour. One damned hour. O/wise, bollocks on ya, Senator!
I was so glad to see this topic. I have such a sincere wish that McMess would quit calling me “My Friend.” I’m not, and I do not like his phony, sort of grimace, smile. Just me, I guess.
Barack Obama did the right thing, while John McCain did the typically Republican thing by ignoring the concerns of Americans who aren’t billionaires. McCain could care less about Iowans, and proved it with this stunt. I just hope the Obama campaign makes good use of this incident to show the real John McCain.
Photo-ops? Bring on more of his green backdrops and rictus grins (thanks, punaise), and he’s doing photo-oops.
Say wha? McTeleprompter didn’t stuff a loaf of bread down his pants and then land on the roof of a flooded home in one of Cindy’s helicopters? It would have been a good photo op.
Maybe Senator Obama can send out an email explaining why he’s allowing the Federal government to spy on its citizens in violation of the Constitution instead of taking the opportunity to get some good photos in from disaster’s front lines.
cottage cheese in lime green jello, baby!
Here’s what George Bush & Johnny McTeleprompter were doing as Americans drowned in their attics on the Gulf Coast:

Awwww how cute.
Maybe you should wait for his floor speech and see how he ends up voting before throwing him under the bus?
John Dean, on KO, says that today was a victory for the terrorists, in that the 4th Amendment was effectively knocked out today.
way OT: an article in the recent Dwell Magazine extolling the virtues of eco-toilets (slide show here) nevertheless laments the clunky aesthetics of the super-dooper composting toilets. The writer suggested having Apple work on the design, yielding…. (drum roll please)…. the iPoo
OK,,,Yes, I laughed. I know you couldn’t resist.
Indeed. I have yet to see anyone explain how Obama could realistically have changed today’s vote in the house.
I’m still in wait-and-see mode on this.
no, it really was in the article.
the iPoo
but how’s the sound quality? where do the ear-buds plug in?
Never mind.
I’m pissed off at Pelosi & Hoyer for even bringing this up for a vote. They didn’t have to since the 1973 FISA Act is still in effect. Hell, they told everyone a few months ago that our nation is safe, which it is. Why they brought it up is beyond me! Pisses me off.
If I’m not mistaken, the Senate last time passed a bill that did not have immunity for the telecoms in it. Let’s hope they shoot down the House bill. ;-)
O, I believe you….thanks for sharing.
heh, herez one for Neiwert

Bah hahahaha! Love it. Here’s a still photo to go with that song…

Perfect. ;-)
(I did not create the photo. It’s here: http://www.city-data.com/forum…..ama-3.html)
Hello everyone – sorry I am late
lmao, cute
OT just left SEnator Dodd a note at his site asking for a filibuster on FISA.
Actually, the Senate’s version that the House refused to pass earlier this year DID have Telecom immunity thanks to Jay Rockefeller and Harry Reid. Harry elected to present the Intel Committee version of the bill with immunity rather than the Judiciary Committee version which did not have immunity
Typing this on my iPod touch – spouse has the other machine.
So what’s shakin’?
comments appreciated
Okay. Thanks for the info. It’s difficult to keep track some days. Most days it’s information-overload. ;-)
Let’s call and yell some more:
Steny Hoyer: (202) 225-4131
Nancy Pelosi: (202) 225-0100
;-)
Immunity for who the telecoms can testify against Bush anything they did was under a very real threat of duress the FISA bill prevents us from getting leverage on the telecoms to testify. This FISA bill is witness tampering!
I support Obama, I will vote for Obama but today it is hard to be happy about anything.
Obama and Reid now say that they will work to remove telco immunity from the Senste version of the bill. Since the whole reason Bush wants it is for the telco immunity, this would cause Bush to veto it in all likelihood regardless of what else it offered. We need to keep calling – and to tell them that we won’t settle for bamboozlement. I’ve been telling any Obama or DNC callers that I won’t donate until they stop telco immunity.
Photo reminds me of that favorite Grant Wood of the farm couple. I think W could have a very significant future as a cartoon character. He is not so likeable as Mr Magoo, but there is certainly a place.
Kay: Good on you!
Who is best to contact? I called my Rep this morning….I have 2 serious repub Senators. Is Reid the place to start?
fig leaf.
OT question for those watching KO:
Is everybody seeing the Obama ad during commercial breaks with the young mother and baby where the mother tells McCain he “can’t have” (her son)?
I’m getting it here in Indiana – wondering whether it’s nation-wide or specifically targeted to only some states…
Moyers doing a piece on race tonight…just starting.
I think that’s a MoveOn ad.
I think that’s a MoveOn ad.
oops – please pardon my “duh” moment.
But didn’t MoveOn say today they’re, to some extent, getting out of this game?
Reid has no spine I contacted Dodd because he was the only person in the Senate who I thought would do something. Right now we need just one Senator to filibuster to stall and give us the Netroots time to make a big stink on this issue.
Which is what I told Sen Dodd
One heartening thing is that the press is actually working in our favor. It’s not spinning this in Hoyer’s favor at all – instead the press is calling it another big victory for Bush which is not the headline that Steny was hoping to see. I keep thinking back to Saul Alinsky who never talked about the moral angle of an issue when he negotiated with his enemies in the business community – he always talked about their bottom line because he knew that he could get their attention that way. Steny’s bootom line is how he thinks it looks politically and right now it sucks.
But I am open to suggestions:)
PW, from your lips to Barry The Privacy Slayer’s ears.
so long as her son isn’t heir to a beer fortune, McCain prolly won’t want him…
From the bill that passed today (HR 6304)
[emphasis mine]
Says nothing about indemnity for criminal actions in the bill. John Dean pointed that out on KO.
I’m sending money to whomever runs against Pelosi and I don’t care if it is a goddam republican…
It’s playing here in Maine. I have to say, I love the ad. I’ve been saying the same thing as the mother for quite some time. I’ll be damned if I’m going to let my son join the service (normally I wouldn’t have a problem with it) so he can fight an Oil War for the fascists. No way! It’s not honorable what our soldiers are currently being asked to do. It’s embarrassing and infuriating.
Thanks for the news PW I gave up TV recently for the summer. I hope Pat Buchanan is laughing at Steny and calling him Darth’s new Pumpkinhead!
Cindy Sheehan will be running against no-table Nancy.
I wonder how this ad will effect army recruiting numbers in the fall?
LOL Well, you’re in luck because Ms. Cindy Sheehan is trying to oust Nancy Pelosi at the moment (unless that has changed…I’ve not heard if Cindy has given up the fight). You can send a donation to her here:

;-)
Naw, just closing their “527″ which could take big money, foundation donations. Their PAC is going to stay open but rely strictly on the “little people” like thee and me.
Steny’s bottom line is how he thinks it looks politically and right now it sucks.
Boy, I’d love to be in the room when Steny has his moment of clarity and comes to realize that the entire Democratic Base hates his slimy ass.
And is coming after his seat…
Naw, just closing their “527″ which could take big money, foundation donations. Their PAC is going to stay open but rely strictly on the “little people” like thee and me.
got it. thanks.
nice guy just called from the noriega campaign, i’m in ohio…told him i’m already on the mailing list, so, don’t call me.
told him any money i donate right now is going to expose the immunity ’yea’ voters….gave him the actblue fisa site..he liked it.also gave him firedoglake.com.
http://www.actblue.com/page/fisa
and told him i used the words ’donna edwards’ a lot when calling reps and sens the last few days…
1-800-450-8293
capital switchboard
1-202-225-0100
pelosi direct line
p.s. am also sending kucinich a few bucks for his impeachment articles bravado, called his office the next day and said when i get paid, sending money, also called today to thank him for his stand on immunity….and red crescent is next in line after that.
I’m sure it will have some effect if it isn’t already. The ad is close to implying “draft”. That said, George & Dickey’s illegal occupation of a nation that did not attack us (a nation that was defenseless against us) and fuel prices are doing a pretty good job in bringing down recruitment.
“…Steny has his moment of clarity and comes to realize that the entire Democratic Base hates his slimy ass”
I love when that happens. In fact I live for those special moments. ;-)
I’ve been on a few sites FISA is all people seem to be talking about even if the topic is something else. I think Steny made a mistake, but we need more time to stop him!
