When I allowed myself to be talked into supporting Barack Obama for president-- I had been an early enthusiast when he was a longshot state Senator in Chicago running in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate-- I warned the young man urging me to abandon my post-Edwards neutrality and forget that Hillary Clinton had a more progressive voting record, that he (and his generation) should steel themselves for some tremendous letdowns that Obama would surely be serving up. He laughed at me. But when I was his age I would have laughed at me too.
So today when I heard that Obama had endorsed John Barrow, the most reactionary Democrat in Congress, in a primary pitting him against Regina Thomas, a progressive state Senator, I wasn't in the slightest bit surprised. No one who recalls Obama's enthusiastic endorsement of Joe Lieberman against Ned Lamont could possibly be surprised. Obama, like McCain and Clinton, is a professional politician. One of their basic tenets is the Incumbency Protection Racket. That Barrow is running ads everywhere in the district is a tribute to the powerful grassroots campaign Regina Thomas is waging... and to the polling his campaign just completed that shows he's going to get his head handed to him by constituents who know he represents the corporations and the elite power structure, not everyday Georgians. Look at his first TV commercial and how he chooses GOP talking points to lean on-- eliminating "the death tax" and scapegoating immigrants.
A friend of mine says that Obama taped the ad not realizing there is a primary. I don't believe it. He's a smart guy and knows exactly what he's doing. And he has nothing to lose-- at least nothing he cares about. Still, when Obama is president he may well regret that he taped an ad that says “We’re going to need John Barrow back in Congress to help change Washington and get our country back on track,” since the moderate Obama and the ultra-conservative Barrow differ on most important issues that Obama will have to face starting in January. Let's start with this one:
As far as the current contretemps over retroactive immunity and warrantless wiretaps which Senator Obama opposes, Barrow is a major supporter-- one of the original 22 Blue Dogs who signed the letter to Nancy Pelosi demanding that Bush's policies be adhered to. Of course that forces one to notice that while Obama is refusing the corrupting influence of PAC money-- and insisting the DNC follow his lead-- and then you realize that his endorsee, Rep. Barrow, is a typically corrupt Blue Dog scarfing up whatever he can get from the companies who need his help. So... Obama refuses to take money from the telecoms and he is opposing-- like most Democrats-- granting them retroactive immunity for breaking laws. Barrow, on the other hand counts the telecoms, particularly AT&T, Comcast and Verizon-- the very ones who broke laws and demand immunity-- among his most generous supporters. He's taken tens of thousands of dollars from these shady characters and rather than recusing himself from voting on their special interests, he becomes one of their biggest supports... against Senator Obama's principled stand.
Regina, of course, whose candidacy may be harmed by Senator Obama's endorsement, has been working hard in the Georgia state Senate for the same exact principles and values Obama claims to represent. So while Barrow has publicly bragged about being a rubber stamp for Bush (watch that top video again), Regina has been opposing the war and working hard for the well-being of her constituents. As for the FISA bill Bush and Barrow want so desperately for their campaign donors... Regina and Obama are on the same page. "After reading the bill," she said, "the first thing I thought was that this was not good for any American citizens-- and it seems like a violation of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. It doesn't look like what the Bush Administration wants is just the power to eavesdrop on terrorists-- I think we all agree that's his job-- but to also monitor any communication he wants to between any American citizens he wants to and without any lawful judicial supervision."
Like I told my young friend, be ready for lots of this kind of thing from President Obama-- or President Anyone Else; just don't be fooled... again. He really is just like all the rest. Meanwhile, we are not powerless, we're making a real effort to help Regina overcome this latest obstacle. Please contact her campaign to volunteer, and donate to the campaign directly or to our PAC.

Come on Barack - this is beneath you.
Barrow was one of the congressmen I spent a lot of time calling back during the SCHIP fights. I had to call a bunch of Blue Dogs, including my own. Daily.
I don’t know what Obama’s reasoning is here.
I do know that it’s maddening to have someone (like Barrow) throwing the game when they’re supposed to be on my team.
First he supports Lieberman. Now he’s supporting another reactionary Democrat. How do you spell sucker? The more things change the more they stay the same.
Supporting LIEberman worked out so well, Obama just couldn’t help himself!
It’s one thing to want to reach across the aisle, but you have to do so from a position of strength. That strength is undermined by having turncoats like Barrow “on our side.”
The best way to get America back on track is to steer the nation from the right back to the middle. This is not a situation where you can turn incrementally–this is an aircraft carrier we’re steering, and it’s going to take forever to turn it as it is.
Oh my freaking lord! I just watched that tool’s video, and he parrots every GOP talking point out there! He even resurrected ”cut ’n run”.
My opinion of Senator Obama has just plummeted a few notches.
And now we learn that both House and Senate Dems support a FISA compromise that would grant immunity to telecoms.
This is unsettling to say the least.
On another note though, Obama and Kerry’s close the KBR loophole bill is now law:

Y’all think you have it bad? Barrow is my congresscritter. The Dems I’ve talked to today at work (there are a few of us) are all in a temper over this. We don’t understand why Obama’s messing about in a primary race, and we’re all still voting for Regina Thomas anyway. For what it’s worth, however, in my neighborhood Barrow signs outnumber Thomas signs about 3 to 1. [sigh] Pissed at Obama, I am.
Thank you Howie - I knew this splash of cold water on Obama was coming - ugh
866-675-2008 option 6 - The Obama Campaign Office - give them a polite earful
change we can
believe inexpectSenator Obama got a polite but very stern comment from me this morning. I’ll be damned if I’m going to support another corporate centrist. The campaign got a polite earful of my concerns. Damn lot of good it will do.
Aw, shit. Another server BELLLLLCCCHHH.
These servers suck. Big Time.
Obama must be supporting Barrow so that he can get the “bitter” people in the G.E.
“more and bitter Democrats”?
Heh, heh…Yup.
Expect more of the same in “bitter” states.
Another thought…voters for Barrow might not vote for him if Obama endorses him…..
Called in to 866 675 2008 option 6 and got a recording. Will try later.
Big wave to the hot, progressive Hippo:-)
obama phone person just told me that they received TPs about two hours ago saying Obama would join a filibuster against the teleco bill.
”one more example of what must change….supports filibuster of this…the call center got the statement two hours ago.”
…be ready for lots of this kind of thing from President Obama– or President Anyone Else; just don’t be fooled… again. He really is just like all the rest. Meanwhile, we are not powerless,…
amen.
this is one reason why i couldn’t understand the clinton / obama flame wars.
two corporatists senators - nothing worth fighting with eachother over.
we have plenty of real fights -
* calling bullshit on obama so he can’t pretend to be the candidate for change unless he, you know, really takes action.
* supporting blue america candidates
* and we have more than enough issues to push - ending the war, our rights, the climate crisis, the energy crisis, the economic crisis.
(((Selise)))
a belated big thanks for your Pelosi “Open Govt” quote from earlier today -
I have papered the blogisphere with it :D

Very disappointed in Barack Obama’s decision to support a BlueDog/BushDog in a primary. Here’s my email to Obama for America:
Hello –
I’ve been an online donor to the campaign since John Edwards dropped out, and recently donated again the night Al Gore endorsed Barack Obama. I am very disturbed to read in the Atlanta Journal Constitution this evening that Senator Obama has recorded a radio ad in support of Congressman John Barrow in his primary campaign against State Senator Regina Thomas.
John Barrow is a Blue Dog and a Bush Dog. He represents the worst obstructionism in the Democratic House caucus, and certainly won’t help President Obama enact his policy goals after inauguration. Regina Thomas is a strong progressive candidate who represents the demography of the district and is supported by progressive organizations across the district and the nation, including Blue America, where I learned about her and have contributed to her campaign.
I don’t know why Senator Obama decided to become involved in this primary in support of an incumbent who votes against progressive interests and the Democratic caucus in support of the worst of the Bush policies every chance he gets. I would appreciate hearing from someone in the campaign about my concerns, and I would appreciate it if Senator Obama decided not to become involved in this primary campaign.
Democrats need to settle their intraparty differences without bigtime party leaders getting involved. I’m sure Congressman Barrow — or Senator Thomas, if she beats him on July 15th — will welcome Senator Obama’s support. Until then, though, I think it would be better to let the voters in Georgia decide without radio ads and other involvement by party leaders. This has been the DCCC’s policy, and it should be Senator Obama’s policy too.
Thank you for your time reading this lengthy email, and thanks for all you are doing to elect our next Democratic President, Barack Obama.
Sincerely,
Howie, have you contacted Donna Edwards? She might have some connections in the Obama campaign.
The other thought is HRC. If HRC goes down and campaigns FOR Regina, that could really help. Maxine Waters was a big HRC supporter. Maybe she’ll help?
Donna on CSPA1 now!
GREAT LETTER
I’m plagiarizing it liberally and sending it to BO!
Howie, fyi I just sent Regina another #25 via Act Blue.
Obama, we are watching you, too.
The ones who aren’t like all the rest - Kucinich, Dodd, Edwards - were gone early. Let that be a lesson to people.
This is how he will pull off his 50 state stragtegy - back every Blue Dog in the southern states.
Amen. At this point, the only thing I actually anticipate about an Obama Administration is that it will suck less than the current alternative. If it’s going to be any better, we’re going to have to make Obama more intimidated by us than by the people who intimidate him now. That may not be easy.
Preview is my friend - strategy
I have to repeat: no matter who is elected, we are going down the same road toward more and more government intrusion and control, a stronger executive, a compliant Congress, a more conservative (not in any good sense) Supreme Court, and more military action. The only difference is how fast it happens. A once great country with unlimited potential is clearly on the down side of the hill.
The day Obama gave his ”race speech” I wrote on this site that Obama is nothing more than Hillary Light and purely an opportunist that wouldn’t even be a viable candidate without Hillary coming first. And there isn’t enough cash in Demville to get me to vote for Hillary.
When I wrote this I got attacked intensely for my ”we’ll see” Obama view while the rest of you were pining over the second coming of RFK.
Obama is a centrist, corporatist, opportunist and if you think that he doesn’t covet all the powers that Bushco has stolen, then you all are about to be DISAPPOINTED
