my somewhat quixotic quest here at FDL has been to try to de-stigmatize the 3rd party option.

true, there ain’t much to work with out there, but, in a chicken-n-egg fashion, this is partly due to the attachment felt by sincere progressives for reforming the (D) Party.

ideally,3rd parties could potentiate (D) reform - because reformist (D)’s could say “watch out, we better shape up and fly right or we might suffer more defections to the “Official Monster Raving Loony Party” of Screaming Lord Sutch:

For some reason the third parties out there now have yet to effectively organize a following. Unless and until we can educate the American public about healthy food choices and a host of other things that keep them glued to the tube, i.e., fat, dumb, and lazy, the 2 party system will just perpetuate itself. I understand long term goals and organizing is a never ending job. I do think a multi-party system will take hold but it’s going to be a long haul. It’s also possible to work toward a multi-party goal and work with what we have at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive.

I’m thinking long term- because every even numbered year we are stuck with unpalatable alternatives on our political plates.

nowhere else in the consumer landscape do americans put up with this paucity of choice - for dinner there is McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Arby’s, Dennys, numerous diners still left, and a vast range of healthier choices, including cooking at home.

right now where the Peace, Environment, Social Justice political faction should be there is pure vacuum.

Obama is drawing a lot of energy from this sector, but as the hyper-engaged types at places like FDL are seeing, he’s mostly audacious hype.

Neither party has any relevance to pending legislation. If a representative of either should be elected to public office in November then they would be in a position to affect legislation. Until such time they have no influence on the FISA capitulation, the GI Bill, war funding, nothing. And until such time as any third party can get on the ballot in all 50 states there is small chance of putting a third party candidate in the White House. I agree that we need more parties, however, this time around it’s not going to happen and I’ll put my energy where it can do the most good in real time.

I don’t believe that we will ever see a 3rd party with a viable chance…the Repub/Dem duo has our political system in a Boolean lock. Nobody will support a 3rd party as long as the 3rd party is painted as a “spoiler”…a narrative that neither of our two major parties will back away from.

Green, & Libertarian come to mind, Independent is always an option - it would teach the Beltway a lesson to have someone like Hoyer replaced by an (I).

it’s unfortunate there are not more to choose from, but I hear the country has a hankerin’ for “Change” at this time.

my point has always been to distinguish between real and fake Change. Kabuki, etc.

Last time I looked there were 2 parties represented in the House, 2 parties and 2 independents represented in the Senate. Am I missing a third or fourth party that is standing front and center in opposition to the administration?
