The Obama campaign and the DNC struck back at Giuliani for criticizing Obama for pointing out the handling of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing trial as an example of how to deal with terrorists in American courts….
The DNC takes its shot at Giuliani with an e-mail with a title, parroting Joe Biden’s Greatest Debate Hits: “Rudy, ‘Noun, verb, 9/11’ Giuliani returns.”
“Democrats are not going to be lectured to on security by the mayor who failed to learn the lessons of the 1993 attacks, refused to prepare his own city’s first responders for the next attack, urged President Bush to put his corrupt crony in charge of our homeland security, and was too busy lobbying for his foreign clients to join the Iraq Study Group,” DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney said. “Rudy Giuliani, can echo the McCain campaign’s false and misleading attacks, but he can’t change the fact that John McCain is promising four more years of President Bush’s flawed and failed policies on everything from energy security and the economy to the war in Iraq.”

I got an email from Obama’s campaign about his announcement on taking public campaign financing. I responded to the guy with a statement that the only announcement I wanted to hear from Obama was a stiff opposition to the latest FISA ‘compromise’ legislation being forced down the throats(sort of legislative waterboarding, I guess)of the House members. I also said that if Obama wants our money in order to get the chance to lead the country, that it might be a clever idea for him to show some leadership on this issue right now, before the stupid thing is brought to a vote.

I am a constituent calling about H.R. 6304, the Hoyer/Bush FISA Deal. I urge you to vote “NO” because:
1. The Hoyer/Bush FISA deal allows for mass and untargeted surveillance of Americans’ communications.
2. The Hoyer/Bush FISA deal contains blanket immunity, virtually guaranteeing lawsuits against telecom companies will be dismissed. Ongoing lawsuits may be our last best hope of exposing the extent of illegal spying.
3. If leadership will not lead, it is the responsibility of every lawmaker to lead on this issue. You need to do what your constituents and the American people demand. Bowing to pressure from Republicans, the White House, the telecommunications companies and even Democratic leaders is unacceptable.
And it does not sunset until 2012 so the next administraion is fucked while all the spy folks data mine your communications! Big Brother is watching and listening to you. Are they opening snail mail?

The Democratic Party Exasperation Society redlines all day over the FISA capitulation and the downplayed $165 supplemental allocation to continue the warcrimes in Iraq, but nothing indicates that anyone will do anything other than support the Least Worst, as they scornfully trample on the Constitution and the wishes of the American people.
Which is why everyone to the left of Obama’s mentor in the Senate, Joe Lieberman, can be safely taken for granted and ignored – though for now Obama’s pollsters and consultants have advised that rhetorical odes to ‘change’ are a valid campaign tactic.

He’s turned it into an art form. Kabuki at it’s finest. If he is so opposed to the legislation let him them conduct a real filibuster. Start with a reading of the Constitution.

When FISA was before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Leahy, Feingold, and others made sure that it didn’t have immunity in it. When the bill was in front of a committee over which he presided, he acted.
This, no doubt, is what pissed off Jello Jay and Kit Bond over in the Intelligence committee, and why Steny went behind his back.
I am anxious to see how Leahy will act, if this gets through the House tomorrow. Of course, I’d rather it never gets through the House in the first place.

Last time I looked there were 2 parties represented in the House, 2 parties and 2 independents represented in the Senate. Am I missing a third or fourth party that is standing front and center in opposition to the administration?
Green, & Libertarian come to mind, Independent is always an option – it would teach the Beltway a lesson to have someone like Hoyer replaced by an (I).

I don’t believe that we will ever see a 3rd party with a viable chance…the Repub/Dem duo has our political system in a Boolean lock. Nobody will support a 3rd party as long as the 3rd party is painted as a “spoiler”…a narrative that neither of our two major parties will back away from.
Neither party has any relevance to pending legislation. If a representative of either should be elected to public office in November then they would be in a position to affect legislation. Until such time they have no influence on the FISA capitulation, the GI Bill, war funding, nothing. And until such time as any third party can get on the ballot in all 50 states there is small chance of putting a third party candidate in the White House. I agree that we need more parties, however, this time around it’s not going to happen and I’ll put my energy where it can do the most good in real time.

right now where the Peace, Environment, Social Justice political faction should be there is pure vacuum.
Obama is drawing a lot of energy from this sector, but as the hyper-engaged types at places like FDL are seeing, he’s mostly audacious hype.

I’m thinking long term- because every even numbered year we are stuck with unpalatable alternatives on our political plates.
nowhere else in the consumer landscape do americans put up with this paucity of choice – for dinner there is McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Arby’s, Dennys, numerous diners still left, and a vast range of healthier choices, including cooking at home.
For some reason the third parties out there now have yet to effectively organize a following. Unless and until we can educate the American public about healthy food choices and a host of other things that keep them glued to the tube, i.e., fat, dumb, and lazy, the 2 party system will just perpetuate itself. I understand long term goals and organizing is a never ending job. I do think a multi-party system will take hold but it’s going to be a long haul. It’s also possible to work toward a multi-party goal and work with what we have at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive.

my somewhat quixotic quest here at FDL has been to try to de-stigmatize the 3rd party option.
true, there ain’t much to work with out there, but, in a chicken-n-egg fashion, this is partly due to the attachment felt by sincere progressives for reforming the (D) Party.
ideally,3rd parties could potentiate (D) reform – because reformist (D)’s could say “watch out, we better shape up and fly right or we might suffer more defections to the “Official Monster Raving Loony Party” of Screaming Lord Sutch:
