Call Obama and ask him to speak out publicly against the bill.
Call his Senate office (202 224-2854) where a person will actually answer the phone and take the message.(Don’t call the campaign, you can’t get through.

I’d also suggest Chris VanHollen (D-MD), who’s head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee [raises $$$ to hand out to all Democrats] and his counterpart in the Senate, Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Tell ‘em you won’t be giving $$$ to them, but to individual Dems — good ones — so that there’s no chance your hard-earned change goes to Blue Dogs.

Remind them also of how effective Glenn et al. were in raising a lot of money fast. They might want to call for tips.

Dr. Dean would be on my list, with the same message.

Got thru to all 3 offices: Nadler, Schumer, Clinton. They know nothing of substance about the bill either, but I let them know I’m BEYOND outraged at this, that I’d be watching their votes carefully. Penned a letter to Pelosi, in which I consign her to the circle of Hell I used to reserve for the more craven Republicans (did it in a civilized manner, of course). E-mailed the DNC, which had sent me a pledge form for a contribution; told them I was dropping it in the trash, just as the party has apparently decided to drop the Constitution in the trash. Thanks to one of the posters upthread, got Hoyer’s office number, got a live person, gave him a short, emphatic earful. Never called this many congresscritters all in one sitting, but damn!

When there is no accountability, and no justice, what else can one do? I’m mad enough to march! But where?

Called my useless rep, the staffer said he had no comment, but I have no doubt that he will vote for the bill. I also called Obama’s election hotline, the staffer was somewhat exasperated at getting another call on the topic. She reluctantly allowed me to speak on the topic for a minute or two, but her attitude was one of “I’ve already heard all this”.

Called my senators and rep [Lautenberg, Menendez, and Pallone (D-NJ06), to urge in the strongest possible terms to vote against the FISA bill as written. Until there is transparency, with adequate review by Senate and House Judiciary Committees, this bill represents a huge giveaway to Bush, Cheney, and the other war criminals.

I called Dennis Rehberg (R-MT) anyway and talked to his staffer. She said that he had not been able to get a copy of the bill either, and wasn’t too happy about it. We had a nice conversation – I stated that I agreed the original FISA bill probably needed updated due to new technology but that this current bill from what I could gather way over-reached in that area. I asked what his position on the immunity was and she claimed she didn’t know. I asked for a response and gave my info.

” civil action may not lie or be maintained in a Federal or State court against any person for providing assistance to an element of the intelligence community, and shall be properly dismissed, if the Attorney General certifies to the district court of the United States in which such action is pending that . . . (A) in connection with intelligence activity involving communications that was (i) authorized by the President during the period beginning on September 11, 2001, and ending on January 17, 2007 and (ii) designed to prevent or detect a terrorist attack, or activities in preparation of a terrorist attack, against the United States” and

(B) the subject of a written request or directive . . . indicating that the activity was (i) authorized by the President; and (ii) determined to be lawful.”

Hmmmm….depends upon the meaning of “communications”….this is so broad it could protect everyone from Bush to Blackwater to interrogation contractors…..seems like.

I have called Stainy Whore on two different phone numbers and spoke to staffers. The first one seemed really anxious to get off the phone, the other listened politely and didn’t say much. I wrote a letter to Pelosi early this morning (it’s posted on late late nite FDL). My rep is Denny Rehburg (R-MT) and he’s useless. I will also call Sens Tester and Baucus later today after I see my clients. They both voted against the telcom immunity in the Senate so hopefully they will stand firm.

I just wrote to Art Pulaski at the California Labor Federal asking for his help in the getting out the word. I am trying to come up with more ideas about untapped resources.
