Republicans are already getting lots of advice in the media on how they can win in November. And the surprise winner? Go negative, go personal, go nasty.
Gosh, like they’ve never done that before.
Gosh, like they weren’t going to do that anyway.
Anyway, there was CNN "senior analyst" Jeffrey Toobin, on Wolf Blitzer’s "Situation Room" Tuesday:
Well, I think there’s a paradox here, which is that McCain has always been a politician who really has been about the issues, about his stands on campaign finance, immigration, whatever he happens to be identified with at that moment. But the way to beat Barack Obama is not on the issues, because the issues support him. He’s the one who has the majority support for the issues he cares about.
The way to attack Obama is to attack him personally, to tear him down, make him seem risky, different, just too unusual a person to be president.
That’s McCain’s challenge if he wants to do it. It’s not something he’s done before. We’ll see if he takes it on this time.
Yeah, because it’s his duty as a Republican, you know. (And for what it’s worth, McCain has run the McNasty style of campaign on more than a few occasions already in his career; but Toobin has a Maverick Man narrative to sell here, and annoying facts have no place at such times.)
BLITZER: If he doesn’t do it, there will be plenty of groups out there, unaffiliated with the campaign, that will be more than happy to do it, right, Jack?
CAFFERTY: Well, yes, I would assume that they will. But you have to be a little careful with some of this stuff, because Barack Obama is a very popular fellow among the average middle class folks in this country. And, again, I go back to that 84 percent who think the country is on the wrong track. McCain is identified as part of the Washington establishment. He’s been there for 26 years. And the way he flip-flops around on the issues, I’m not sure up you can even talk about him being a maverick anymore. It seems that he’s much more politically expedient than maybe used to be.
So I think you’ve got to be a little careful about just coming out and just bashing Barack Obama for the sake of doing it. It could backfire.
TOOBIN: I’m not sure. You know, we often think it’s going to backfire. But going into the last election, who would have thought that John Kerry, the war hero, the Bronze Star winner, could have been attacked on his military record?
That seemed like the one area he was completely bullet-proof. But of course we know about the swift boat attacks. Negative attacks work and it’s something that I think if the Republicans want to win, that’s what they’re going to have to do.
I think the little photoshop job above — which is everywhere on wingnut blogs and websites, a very popular little item — pretty much encapsulates the GOP campaign this fall. No, that’s not a parody.
But it’s a joke to think that McCain is going to have to get his hair mussed. As Cafferty and Blitzer suggest, guys like Floyd Brown and his crew of wack jobs are going to be setting the tone, letting McCain keep his deniability plausible.
And it’ll be "mainstream" pundits like Toobin who will look on approvingly as they do, maintaining their own deniability. Because, you know, they’re just disinterested observers who want to see the most vicious, nasty, ratings-friendly campaign possible — especially if it helps keep those increasingly crumbly Village walls intact.
You know, it’s too bad we can’t vote our pundits out of office at election time too.

So, David!
Only the beginning, folks, only the beginning. Our national remake of Blazing Saddles (without the irony) is just in the first act.
It’s not like the Republicans need a reminder, their campaigns have been
hatchet jobs for decades. I just wish Toobin could have included some
disclaimer in his statement, you know, like Nixon’s ” but that would be
wrong “… just sayin’.
There will always be a supply of willing whores to replace the evicted ones
Good Morning David
mooga booga!
Obama needs surrogates to go after the blow-dried pundits and the botoxed banshees.
One thing that the Republicans are good at (hint: it isn’t governing)
is knowing how to work the refs.
oh allan, thank you for that one.
sorta, kinda OT – new polling data – good news:
June 18, 2008 – Obama Leads McCain In Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll Finds; Clinton On The Ticket Does Not Help Dems — FLORIDA: Obama 47 – McCain 43; OHIO: Obama 48 – McCain 42; PENNSYLVANIA: Obama 52 – McCain 40
Obama leading in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
In what election have the Republics not used negative attacks? It is what defines a Republic campaign. Cafferty acts like they are being forced into it, yet they do it every time.
ooops – linkie:
http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x2882.xml?ReleaseID=1187
Toobin should have provided some colorful examples to illustrate his point. That the Bush camp suggested that McCain had fathered a black child is a good example of what Toobin is calling for. Boob Toobin should do much more to reinforce his position.
I’m appreciating Cafferty more and more as the time goes by. One of the few seemingly clear thinking on CNN. He should get more air time!
All I really know is that this time around, I really, really want the smart guy. Not the guy that graduated fifth from the bottom of his graduating class, not the guy that trips over his own tongue every time he tries to speak. Not the insensitive guy that doesn’t know that it matters very much to parents and families when their loved one gets to come home from the ME. I want the guy that has a natural, not a forced smile. I want the guy that Europe is falling in love with. I want the Harvard President of Law Review turned Constitutional Law professor. As far as McInsane goes, I hope he goes very, very far and gets so lost he’s never to be seen again!
When does the GOP send Bush to Iowa, Illinois, or Missouri to pretend like he cares about the flooding?
“Negative attacks work…”
And why is that? Because tools like Toobin continue to repeat them ad nauseum as if they’re some legitimate news story. “Obama denies that he beats his wife, but questions still remain…back to you, Wolf.”
interesting factoid:
MSNBC reports that Obama and McSame are sitting side-by-side inside the Russert Memorial service.
I’m wondering how the Crist, McCain, Dubya oil drilling in Florida is gonna play in the school of public opinion.
Crist may have lost if he’d campaigned as a dirty oil, gay man.
OT – correction to my comment on congressional hearings in the previous thread.
the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation hearing scheduled for this morning has been postponed.
here is an alternative:
Must make it easier for Secret Service detail…
Saw a man I’m thinking could be an interesting surrogate for Obama/against BushCo/McCainiacism if he were of a mind to accept a challenge. Col. Jack Jacobs this morning on Imus. [they usually get a link up for their interviews on WABC within a day–a tad slow, but worth hearing]
Cred from here to London on both economics and military issues. Medal of Honor recipient, Vietnam vet, strong voice, successful international developer. Somebody the Obama campaign should be looking at and reaching out to? I know nothing about his politics, but he makes an Iceland presence.
Prairie Today: Morning Notes
I really have been taken aback by the degree which the pundits consider it just a matter of course to advocate demogagery, lying, etc.. It’s like, “Well, what’s a poor candidate to do when he’s wrong on every issue.”
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a candidate answer debate question with something like, “Well, of course I’m lying. Voters respect a winner, and have an obligation to my supporters to do every possible underhanded, Macheavellian, low-life trick in the book.”
botoxed banshee = Mary Joe Matalin
I’m wondering how the Crist, McCain, Dubya oil drilling in Florida is gonna play in the school of public opinion.
Bruce Springsteen – I’m Going Down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZarmRLa2p9Q
imo, anyway.
Why didn’t Cafferty or Blitzer respond to the look what they did to John Kerry statement with: And Jeff, look where that has left the country. Can I sign up to be a pundit? I can go on and make stuff up and not have anyone challenge me on it. I can do that job.
Isn’t Toobin a chief Bush apologist?
When does exploratory drilling off of Kennebunkport start?
or windfarms off Nantucket?
One issue lost in the “negative works” is that “positive works” just as well, in fact better. Anyone in marketing can tell you that. How many bowls of Cheerios would be sold on negative? Zippo.
Obama can rise above it and make the attacks look just like what they are: immature, man-child, bully tactics which equal no brain, no talent, no skill and no care for the greater good of our country. Which will be the “after messaging” over McCain’s head from any Repug fringe groups.
Kerry failed to pull a positive checkmate on the crap thrown at him.
Obama is smart enough to hopefully do just that. But it will take running his campaign in a non-traditional way.
The country is in the crapper right now. Throwing more crap during the election will backfire, will seem extremely risky in an already risky time in our history. People are looking for hope. Talking heads do not get this plain fact.
And this statement will backfire as well. They will make him seem like the candidate to “risk” hope on change. Unusual. How about looking at the lifestyle of McSame, now there’s unusual and not a life in touch with the average person.
Obama can identify with multiple cultural groups, single parents, adults raised in single parent homes, the elderly (due to his grandparents influence on his life), any immigrant who has worked hard to make it in this country, the well educated as well as those a good education has been out of reach. I’ll just stop the list there.
McCain, he can identify with the man on the street who decides to leave their wife when the wife is suffering with health problems…and leave the kids behind too for a endless cash cow wife. Now, there’s noble character for you. That just seems to pale his war hero status. Leaving a sick wive to be cared for by your kids is not heroism.
Yah, the invaluable opinions and advice from CNN flakes. Forget the news. Just give us the opinions of people we neither voted for nor hired. But their opinions and advice will help us to “see”. Yeech.
From the poll:
We may have misunderestimated Commander Guy after all.
He is damn close to hitting the teens in Ohio.
If he gets there, I’ll be the first to congratulate him
and say “Mission Accomplished”.
So with the GOP going all out with their hate Campaign if ANYTHING happens to Obama the right should know we will hold them all to blame for creating or tolerating this atmosphere.
Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, the Swift Boat veterans, the Righty Blogs we will hold them all responsible.
See my #19.
Would two smart guys be too much to hope for?
Hey, if Clinton could pick another Southern white guy, why can’t we anticipate Obama picking another smart guy?
… or strip mining in Jackson Hole?
Unlike President Clinton, who showed up during the flooding and actually helped sandbag, Bush will wait for the flooding to recede and bring in blitzkrieg lights and plenty of fake supplies. They are probably finding it difficult to find a friendly audience for his staged photo-op.
The new Republican strategy is the same as the one they have been using in various forms for the last 40 years: racism.
Won’t he bring his guitar too?
Boosh on my teevee giving his “advancing rapidly to the rear”, “let’s invest some more in oil” now. Takes no questions.
MSNBC trots out hack Mort Zuckerman to reinforce the farce…
Will they make the same mistake of allowing Dubya to button his own shirt this time?
Imagine if you would that the most unpopular kids in high school with a 30% approval rating decided to start a personal smear campaign against the most popular kid in school.
Somehow I think once everyone found out about who was spreading the gossip the unpopular kids would have to look for a new school.
Sure Karl and the swift boat vets all have done this before but that was in elections where nobody was paying attention.
Or in the swift boaters case they did have 9/11 to juice up the fear level and fear as you know makes almost anything believable.
So unless we get another terror attack this time will be different, I expect Bush to be looking for a new school soon in South America or anywhere without an extradition treaty.
MSNBC had on Mort Zuckerman? Isn’t he a mainstay pundit for Faux News? MSNBC must be desperate with everyone being gone for the Tim Russert memorial.
Good Morning David and Firedogs -
sigh . . .s’okay only when McCain does it –
did you see all the villager heads exploding over the new moveon ad ?!?!
“emotionally charged images”
“dangling babies”
“borderline shameless”
“out of context”
The GOP no longer needs to pretend like Bush is just a regular guy and not the spoiled son of a wealthy family that views itself as royalty.
When does exploratory drilling off of Kennebunkport start?
The twelfth of never?
Wow ! Donna Edwards certainly waxed that Repub – 80.2 to 18.2. Could the Dems take some lessons from her campaign? !
The GOP will try and blame us if their is another terror attack for not approving FISA, for saying that torture is wrong etc.
We need to keep hammering G.W for goofing off in Iraq all these years while doing nothing to get Ossama bin Laden.
Mort Zuckerman? Isn’t he a mainstay pundit for Faux News?
You’re asking the wrong guy about who does or doesn’t appear on FauxNews.
But one way or the other, sounded like he’d fit right in…
Funny you should say that.
Was just watching that with my sister and we were talking about taking some of the scenes out to do adverts against the bigots that seem to be crawling out of everywhere…they’ve always been here, sadly.
It is shameful.
(Waco Kid, you out there?)
“MSNBC reports that Obama and McSame are sitting side-by-side inside the Russert Memorial service.”
*vomits*
Republicans in Washington now have such a track record that all their national security angles can be met with specific information as to how national blood, treasure, and honor—and security in the safety sense—have fared under the Bush administration.
Republican efforts to demonize Islam when deemed expedient present the opportunity to point out that consecutive administrations of both major parties, going back decades, have engaged in diplomatic and trade relations with, and military alliances with, nations of predominantly Islamic populations.
great ad! He can’t have my boys either.
none of my peeps either.
Last night ABC News had George Stephanopoulos opining that while Obama was points ahead of McCain he should be more and so belittling Obama’s advantage. Naturally, he did not bring up the media’s beatification of McCain as a reason that many people might have an unnecessarily positive view of him. There is such revulsion to the failures of the Bush Administration that a ham sandwich could beat McCain with the slogan: Want more of the same? Vote John McCain. The media are doing their damnedest to mitigate a rejection of Republicans of historical proportions come November.
silly hippies –
when Democrats do it it’s a “baseless smear”
when Republics do it it’s “scrutinizing”
Woo HOO!
she’s just wonderful, I am so glad we got to know her, this is just great that she won.
* insert big smile here *
I just knew that service would be broadcast.
I know politicians have to do what they have to do, but kissing timmeh’s ring
:0===|
Mort? Never heard of that name before. Does it have anything to do with mortitian,…mortuary…morgue…?
I suspect that she is a pretty special and that we are going to be so proud that we supported her.
The picture at the top of the ad is one hundred times more offensive then what Jeffrey Toobin said. Its not funny and it should be taken down. How can you attack Toobin’s comments while at the same time displaying that trash. More nature photography and less sophmoric poster art.
gosh, I can’t imagine why McCain would think it was necessary to run a negative campaign.
After all, Obama’s supporters and surrogates aren’t trying to tear McCain down every chance they get. I mean, every post here about the presidential race is all about how great Obama is — there’s no effort to tear down McCain.
I mean, can we get serious here for a moment, Dave? As a PUMA, its glaringly obvious to me that the fauxgressive blogosphere is all about tearing down McCain, while the wingnut blogosphere is all about tearing down Obama. You and your peers are part and parcel of the problem — this is going to be an ugly campaign because both major party candidates are people for whom its impossible to make a positive argument.
Where did you see the part about the heads exploding? I think that ad is brilliant. I support MoveOn with a meager $10. per month, and I love it when they do stuff like this!
“MSNBC reports that Obama and McSame are sitting side-by-side inside the Russert Memorial service.”
McSame to Obama: “Barack, I feel it’s only fair to tell you that there’s some real nasty advertising about ready to come out against you and your wife. I don’t know anything about it…”
That is one powerful ad. 100 years McCain would put many kids and grandkids in Iraq, that’s for sure. And they will love it there at those permanent bases.
What ever happened to George Stephanopoulos he used to work for Clinton now he acts like he used to work for Newt?
do you mean the pic on David’s post?
if not, what ad are you talking about?
Good morning David and pups.
Late again to the Lake; out pulling weeds after a beautiful gentle rain last night.
I used to have a teensy bit of respect for Toobin. Now it’s quite clear he’s not worth the powder to… well… They’ve still got Cafferty, so I occasionally pause to listen to him rant. Otherwise, CNN might as well be FauxNews. Total waste of perfectly good airtime.
Shame? Scruples? Ethics? Standards? Zip! *click*
One shining exception, as I was delighted to see Attaturk acknowledge in last night’s post: McClatchy Newspapers, of which our Akron Beacon Journal (OH) is now a part. They’ve been running a series all this week on the torture policy and other abhorrent behavior sanctioned by the booshies.
Kudos to McClatchy News! I wish they could buy out CNN.

On KO last night, Dionne said that low information voters tend to vote the same way if they spend hours imbibing info or not. KO agreed.
That is false. The info they get (from MSM only) misinforms badly. Now if they got accurate info, would they act differently? That is the question.
the usual suspects -
“emotionally charged images” – chris cilizza WaPo (sp?)
“dangling babies” – willie geist msnbc 6/17/8
“borderline shameless” – chuck todd msnbc 6/17/8
“out of context” – mika brzezinski msnbc 6/17/8
He had “issues” with the Clintons.
(He’s also a member of the Bilderberg group, fwiw)
gee Things, you know how darn irresistible the Gingrich guy is. How could Stephy resist that special sex appeal, he’s man crush material /s
brain bleach in aisle 68 please, stat!
Hey, it’s Paul Lukasiak back to spread bad karma about Obama and to personally campaign for 3 more Republican appointed Supreme Court justices under a McCain presidency.
Everyone say hi.
-G
Shorter lukasiak. Obama sucks. Neener, neener, neener.
Nope Raven and the other Vets are constantly getting on our case not to go after McCain’s record as a vet. Even though I admit I slip sometimes:(
Also are we spreading lying Whitey rumors about McCain like the Right was about Michelle Obama?
Are we wrong to wonder whether a Senator is to old to be President when he confuses Shia and Sunni not once but a few times?
Trust me we are holding back on how low we can go. But on the bright side we are unloading all the Snark we can at McCain which the GOP can’t do because they are humor challenged:)
Money and status, give media figures enough and the parent corporations don’t have to force them to do anything. They will gladly do it on their own.
did brian99c just drop a penny and run?
Everyone say hi.
No.
Obama and his campaign are proving how strong they are now that the race is simply a one-on-one contest. The Repugs going negative would be more effective if they had some solid ground to stand on, but they don’t. We can’t underestimate the ignorance of the electorate or let up for a moment. This is the dream election that we have been waiting for all these years.
The opportunity to cripple the Repugs for at least two decades is here. I say we should concentrate on causing them as much damage as possible.
OMG.
And the choir will continue to sign throughout the term.
Brain Bleach stat! Jabba the Hut with Princess Leia is a more pleasing image, Eyes Wide Shut in three D might provide a better visual!
I see my comment at 57…
Yes, but Obama has shown he can give as good as he gets and seems to have fastest response team ever. Additional thoughts…http://www.tagg-theangrygayguy.com
Like in the pocketbook? Oil, media, security and weapons?
ahhh – the poor villagers (and yes, I understand Cafferty factually veers off the reservation on occasion)
but I’ve been seeing this sentiment expressed in various forms quite a bit in the last 10 days
most seeing it as a “deeply troubling” walk away from a political career rooted in “fiercely independent” thinking. some still see him as maverilicious with those nasty inexperienced staffers “muddying” his message, but the seeds of doubt are popping up everywhere.
poor babies – precious principled popsicle melting in the glare of the campaign sun
Loo Hoo, I don’t see your comment at 57, I see Mr. Lukasiak’s.

Mainstream Criticism
Critics claim the Bilderberg Group promotes the careers of politicians whose views are representative of the interests of multinational corporations, at the expense of democracy.[8] Journalists who have been invited to attend the Bilderberg Conference as observers have discounted these claims, calling the conference “not much different from a seminar or a conference organized by an upscale NGO”[9] with “nothing different except for the influence of the participants.”[10]
[edit]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilderberg_Group
Rummy is a member!
Also, let’s not forget that the McCain campaign turns the old GOP saw about hating lifetime Washington politicians on its head.
Now we are supposed to trust lifetime politicians because they have experience.
-G
another day at FDL without mentioning the (D) controlled Congress funding of the illegal, immoral war in Iraq.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/200…..funding_dc
two frontpage posts that are partisan pushback against the (R) meanies, and strong journalism revealing the depths of the American Gulag Archipelago.
over at Antiwar.com, they have a great interview with Sibel Edmonds – remember her? Before it became clear that the (D) congress waas not going to do anything that they had won control promising to do, they were going to at least do some fearsome investigations.
Congressman Waxman was going to call the brave Sibel Edmonds to testify, but hmmmm, its been almost two years and he hasn’t got around to it.
This prefigures and foreshadows what will happen, on so many issues that get people riled up here, with a (D) Presidency and a (D) Congress:
Sibel Edmonds:
http://www.antiwar.com/orig/ho…..leid=13002
who ever would have thought Lucy would pull the football away from Charlie Brown, again?
all this hard work doing pushback against loathsome (R) smear campaigns, and what will people who value civil liberties and peace get in return?
Right after the wind farm that Teddy says ruins his sailing gets approved.
refreshed and I see it.
Hi Paul.
Yeah this deserves a post!
McClatchy also published Militants found recruits among Guantanamo’s wrongly detained and ‘If the detainee dies you’re doing it wrong’.
Bush hits 24% in the most recent Harris Poll.
-G
Let’s elect people who oppose the war. Our commenter BMuse/Southern Dem reports good news from red-to-blue North Carolina:
Kissell, Obama ahead in NC-08
If you’re a kos member, recs appreciated…thank you!
how ’bout following that nice rule sometimes attributed to Napolean:
‘Never bother the enemy while he is defeating himself.’
It is quite possible to be relentless, accurate, and effective by clearly and regularly pointing out the opposition’s mis- and malfeasance, goofs, evil deeds, & lies. It is not necessary, nor is it always wise for the effectiveness of your own campaign, to dive head-first into the gutter.
Watch and listen to the Obamas, him AND her. They are sticking to their own POSITIVE message, avoiding the sludge, and denting McSame’s armor somethin’ fierce in the process. AND the Obama damage-control team is lightening-fast, savvy and stunningly effective imo. This is no whoopsie-plagued Kerry-type campaign.
Adie’s prediction fwiw: Obama will come out a winner doing exactly what he’s doing. Let’s help, and watch his back. ;->
maybe you weren’t with us 8 weeks ago :D
Blown links. I’ll try again.
Creepy McBush….Heh, heh, heh…this needs to go viral..:

But…but…Sibel Edmonds is one of those crazy conspiratory theory figures…and should be mocked relentlessly…
Late to the thread – back from my morning LA Frewway drive — only one more day, yay.
But, David, while reading your article I had a thought. I’m sure someone else has already said this, but it’s a new thought for me. Of course the pundits at the MSM want to support the Republican regime. For a lot of reasons, like the right-wingers own the freaking syndicates, this might be another reason.
We have all heard the term, If it Bleeds, It Leads. So, if a Democratic wins, you know, like BO, like other Dems who favor citizen’s rights, education and other generally healthy issues are in office what are they going to report on? They’d have to actually research and report back on the positive strides the government would be making. It’s just so much easier and CHEAPER to report He Said, She Said repeats from the AP.
That’s my thought this morning.
I absolutely agree with you. They are skilled politicians and have a compaign team second to none. I have always liked the Napolean quote when applied to politics.
Whether Bilderbergers, CFR, Bohemian Groves, Skull and Bones, or Jekyll Island, it is all the same. The Super Rich gather in secrecy to plan depressions or war.
Corporate journalists provide cover for The Ruling Elite, by framing critics as conspiracy nuts. The corporate fakes such as Timmy protect and maintain our Fossil Fuel Nation.
And you are not?
Gotta hand it to you, at least you are an equal opportunity candidate basher.
fwiw, Teddy’s sailing isn’t the only thing people are worried about with those windmills. That area is a major, MAJOR bird migration flyway.
Windmill farms in the western U.S. are causing significant casualties among local hawks et al., I believe. Sorry, no link at the moment. But it is a common subject of concern among wildlife experts and nature guides who witness the problem 1st hand.
There was a large article in the SF Chronicle about a year ago regarding the windmills killing hundreds of birds. Don’t know how they can solve that problem.
Just a note for the techies.I keep getting there is a script causing Mozilla to run slowly message. Reports of this have come up over at Glenzilla’s place also. The only thing that I can think of that here and there have in common is Ads. I love this site, but this script problem keeeps me from particapating like I want to.
OT the Dow is 12,070.09 if it breaks below 12,000 things will get interesting, but if it stays there for a few weeks they will get scary.
http://finance.google.com/finance?cid=983582
thanks for that link, CBL2.
I was on that thread, and I posted a quote from Chris Hedges at 104
disgusting.
I”m really offended by that picture too.
And who needs minions when you have blitz and mccafferty publicizing the ideas?
It may only have been local school board, but I USED it. It works, at least when your opposition are idiots. No offense to all you bonafide idiots out there. Move along. Nothing to see here. /s
Amen Brother Orcinus !
Can’t they install ultrasonic whistles or maybe some LED lights to scare off the birds?
Yes, they are building hundreds of them in MN and the Dakotas, among the small lakes which comprise the nation’s waterfowel production areas. I don’t know how that will turn out.
I hope he is referring to the politicians and not voters in general.
sorry, I’m just butting into your conversation by reading only your comment. I was just curious.
I use greasemonkey and adblock to block stuff I don’t like on the web.
What browser do you use?
No, in the House and the Senate.
they never quite got the tinfoil hat to fit on her, though, cause she has things like IG reports on her side, FBI agents willing to testify under oath about what she saw…
I have heard the debate and would point to Denmark as a success story that has made even Greenpeace happy.
http://www.boston.com/news/wor…..ct_stalls/
Militants found recruits among Guantanamo’s wrongly detained and ‘If the detainee dies you’re doing it wrong’.
Studies indicate that white lights do not confuse birds, whereas red lights do. Unfortunately, that’s the exact opposite of human preferences regarding the disconcerting effects of aviation safety lighting.
the only things i can think of would undoubtedly cost oodles of $$$ & probably not even work, sigh (e.g., some sort of protective cages around the blades)
And, speaking of damage, I’m sure you’d join me in appealing to our colleagues here to cease and desist IMMEDIATELY with any thots of picking on Ted. Enough already!
merely pointing out that FDL has been on it for a while – and calling it for what it is – callous cynicism
and with all due respect, Mr Hedges can kiss my dfh behind – I don’t know of any “anguished apologists” on this site
Maybe the Spooks should start leaking stuff to the press to force Congresses hand.
I have no problem with the way the campaign is being conducted. What I meant was to get out in the field and be sure to maximize the coming victory to its fullest.
Mozilla 1.7. I get the same thing using firefox 2.whatever. The commonality between here and Glen’s site make me believe that the script is in the advertising.
Geez. That is the creepy.
Hmmmm… So I’m sitting here remembering … Bush, AWOL, TANG, lotsa documents … yeah, that was real positive work we did there, Paul!
You’re being silly, of course. Naturally partisans on both sides of the aisle will be engaging negative attacks on the other. That’s standard politics. What’s not standard is for the campaign itself to be focused on tearing down the opponent — for McCain and his immediate campaign to be making the election be about scary brown people.
Well, OK, it is standard for Republican campaigns to run this way. But isn’t it worth pointing that out?
It is a problem when a campaign is not about policy differences or the ability to make Americans’ lives better, but about inflaming racial stereotypes. The worst thing Democrats say about Republicans is that they’re incompetent assholes — not nice, but also true, and moreover it has a direct relation to and bearing on policy.
“awhile” is great, what about now, before they pass the one hundred sixty three billion dollar supplemental, intentionally designed to avoid the issue during the height of the election season?
if the petition to force the National Press Club to rescind its invite to some wingnut cracker was important enough to post about, then maybe this is, too?
That’d be refreshing.
In fact this is one of the longest periods that I have had recently without my system crashing.
With all respect to David, one of my favorite writers, I think you’re misrepresenting Jeff Toobin. Given his work in the past, it should be clear he means to characterize the most likely McCain strategy (which we’ve already seen in effect) and not recommend or endorse it. I wish he’d added, “Of course, that’s despicable.” BUT by saying that Americans agree with Obama on all the issues and McCain–the issues man–will adapt by slinging the most absurd kind of crap, isn’t it obvious how Toobin feels?
Mozilla 1.7. I get the same thing using firefox 2.whatever.
Just an unsolicited piece of advice. Don’t even think about downloading Firefox 3.0 yet. I tried it for about 3 days, and it totally crashed my poor old computer about once per hour.
Maybe it’s not compatible with my old Windows 2000 platform, I dunno, but I got rid of it, and went back to FF 2.0.
I just installed Firefox 3…it is supposed to prevent the loss of all of your bookmarks, etc., if the computer crashes. I’ve lost mine about 6 times.
Uh..oh. I just installed it…we shall see…
agreed. apologies David, but imo anyone who re-posts that picture is causing harm, even if it seems innocuous. i think we oughtta avoid using such stuff. again (my #93), it’s probably counter-productive to your own campaign choice, as well as offensive to many. when you’ve even got ding-dong David Brooks out there cleverly implying-without-quite-lying that Obama is Muslim, you don’t need to reinforce that erroneous thot in any more
pea-sized brainsbrains too bizzy with real life to pay attention, out there.the foreigh press has had some great articles, perhaps with spooks corroborating.
I don’t have the link – I gotta get back to work – but the whole Sibel Edmonds saga perfectly encapsulates so many issues … she says at the end of the Antiwar interview:
one of my tiresomely chronic points – principle should transcend allegiance to political faction.
Hell, I’m still running Win98. I made a vow a long time ago not give Microsoft any more of my money.
It is supposed to prevent the loss of all of your bookmarks, etc., if the computer crashes. I’ve lost mine about 6 times.
fwiw, when it *did* crash, I never lost my bookmarks…
this is the kind of crap that he will have to deal with — and does anyone wonder why they asked women in headscarves not to stand behind him at an event. Just think what they’d do with that. there are people out there that are going to believe any bull that is put before them.
The addons help me on my lowend machine.
Good Grief! I guess you need to do whatever makes you happy, but have you ever considered upgrading to Ubuntu? It’s very cool, much more modern and safer, and you’ll love the price (Free)!
Marsha Blackburn makes me sick.
Hah! I really like FF3 :)
Think about Macintosh Apples – yummy
Maybe we need the Foreign Press Stories to make the case against Bush if only we could get them mentioned here.
You beat me to it!!!
Following the link now.
Opera 9.5 sings to me! I’ve been an Opera lover since 3.1 so I have some predjudice.
As to Ms. Blackburn, she makes everybody ill.
Ding.
We bought his & hers 20″ IMacs. Plug ‘em in. Instant network. No crashes. Feature-loaded. Fast, sleek. Yummie indeed.
Hell, I’m still running Win98.
In this area, when I say “I dunno”, I really mean it. My knowledge of computers, aside from being able to shakily drive them, is pretty much as follows:
1). I know one when I see one, and
2). I can correctly spell the word “computer”.
Luddites, Unite!
Even my decidely non techie Sister completely set up an Imac up without any help, usually she can’t even connect the cables on a new system without calling me.
Let the landslide begin!
I can’t wait to hear 1) How McCain can win without these states, and/or 2) How his sparkling personality, once in evidence to these misguided voters, will allow him to overcome these poll numbers.
recent chez cbl mystery of the disappearing bookmarks – solved ! *g*
Hah! I really like FF3 :)
Maybe it was something I said… *g*
that’s a great quote from hedges. it reminds me of milton mayer (who we have discussed before).
from his book, “they thought they were free: the germans 1933-45″
wubi is another easy way to try/install linux.
I do all of my podcasts in GarageBand, which comes bundled with the system. Amazing.
and his support of off-shore drilling hasn’t yet been factored in – that’s gonna go over like a tur…ummm, it’s not gonna be good.
Kiss Florida good-bye, Johnny McBrain!
I hope you back up what you want to keep. I keep meaning to. Even the vaunted Mac (I use one) can let data slip away; I heard that and found it to be true.
McCrazy is a dazzler. He’s got the body language and the smile that say, “I’m a people person”.
Christy has a brand new thread up and ready for our pleasure.
don’t think of a elephant.
now, what animal do you have a picture of in your mind?
… i agree about the picture. it bothers me too. maybe if david is around, we could discuss?
And certainly California. We always work to stop these ugly things and they won’t get their wish this time either.
Absolutely. Floridians will pay attention to something that would leave the coast looking like Galveston..
OT, but related to the matter of congressional impotence.
Linda Sanchez was embarrassing last night on Dan Abrams, with regard to the Conyers Committee attempt to get Rove to testify regarding former Governor Don Sieglemann. It was obvious that Rove will tell the committee to go to hell and there is apparently nothing they can do about it. When repeatedly questioned about inherent contempt, Sanchez repeatedly temporized and said that it hadn’t been done for a long time. Pat Buchanon told her flately that Rove (and Buchanon) would laugh in their faces.
Somehow, if it takes a contitutional amendment, congress needs to gain the authority to enforce it’s subpoena’s without assistance from the executive branch.
News flash. John Elrod, the Republican candidate in In-7, running against Andre Carson, has just withdrawn from the race and wishes to find a way to run for his current seat in the Indiana House, although the primary has already taken place, of course……
11 1/2 minute vid from KQED,SF about Altamont windfarms and avian fatalities – solutions with results come in the last 5 minutes
eg -
turn 1/2 turbines off in winter months (zero to no winds)
using more current tech which requires fewer towers
doubling the height of towers (out of their normal flight paths)
Ummm that picture. Michelle Malkin is drooling.
Talked to a friend of mine recently. Asia is really on edge he/she thinks. In part thanks to Bush. Via NPR. S.Korea protests taget US Beef. (Take that Lou Dobbs and shove it up your self-righteous so-called patriotic ass) Calling Naomi Klein:
Protests in Thailand too, but not over beef persay.
Yeah. I bought a 320 gig external firewire drive for $119. Just plugged it onto my router, and my system simply sees its IP address. I just drag files and folders to it.
I must admit that I rely on my local LUG, if I need a little help, which I did at first (It was a bit more difficult when Linux was in versions 4.0 There is sure to be one in your neighborhood & they are wonderful.
You’re asking the wrong person. I just know people seem stumped over what to do, and/or those in power don’t want to bother either with the problem or the cost of a solution. The bird watching enthusiasts and biologists are very worried by the prospect, and I am too challenged technically to have the foggiest idea what to do, much less to be asked my opinion by the experts, heh.
Buildings with lotsa glass are also a problem, as most people with picture windows already know. Magnify those problems many-fold and you’ve got your fancy skyscrapers in cities.
Many many birds migrate at night, guided in large part by star patterns in the night sky. Uh huh. That’s true. No kidding.
http://www.mmoca.org/starrytra…..gation.php
Set up a big building, lotsa glass. Bap! birdie done gone on last migration of its life.
before u start laughing about stoopid birdie, consider something.
Are YOU, with your great big humungous brain, able to fly and navigate by the stars – all the way from somewheresville, South American to Canada?
Then there’s the drilling and oil spills and sensitive habitats…
How would you feel, thoroughly exhausted after flying all the way to AK from Argentina, finally plopping down in your favorite bay for a sardine snack, and finding your pristine delicate protective down “clothing” thoroughly soaked in crude oil?
yes… old ladies’ minds wander… *sigh*
did i mention i hate
dubyawhat dubya’s done to my world and yours?please don’t get me wrong.
i love David’s posts. I make it a point never to miss them.
he’s fantastic.
it’s just… my training in behavior screams at me: don’t repeat or spread negative info about your candidate.
someone upthread mentioned malkin drooling. yep. she regurgitates enough bile on her own. we don’t need to hand any more to her.
completely agree with your take on the pic. maybe david didn’t consider that? or maybe he did and has some explanation to share? i don’t know… hopefully he will see our comments and let us know.
got it. amen. ;->
Thanks much for the link. I’m sadly out of date on this.
By the way, the withdrawal mentioned in post 164 is breaking news after my previous posts. :)
I guess I have issues with that as well.
CHS has new thread.
onnnnn the other hand, there’s a different situation in every place you look. The birds follow specific flyways to a large degree; depending on where you are talking about, the situation could be totally different, including the level of danger.
I’m glad to hear of ongoing research.
Then we’ve got the “to h… with it” crowd headed by deadeye….
;->!!!
The picture of Barrack with the turban and the Osama beard.
if it will help at all, you have plenty of company expressing discomfort with the pic up thread.
David is a terrific writer and thoughtful journalist. I’m sure he meant no harm. We kind of expect him to return and address the issue in the future.
As you appreciate jack more,I think jeff toobin is also bringing blitzer back down to earth at times also.He seems to be getting irritated, with blitzer and his seemingly always trying to see something thats not there monnlouge.
Gang, I’m a firm believer in “know thy enemy” — and frankly, the flyer above is so near to parody I just thought it had to be seen to be believed. I’ve gotten in trouble for posting racist Klan material before too. But I think it’s important for people to see what the hell I’m talking about, especially some of the vile racist shit.
Cafferty and Blitzer should switch jobs.
Tax cutting republicans want to drive their Dad’s car on their Grandpa’s highways while spending their kids and grandchildren’s money.
(((David)))
I understand your showing it. It hurts to see it. Maybe that’s a good thing. It is so horribly wrong for people to use this kind of smear on the candidate they oppose.
Thanks for getting back to us.
