Today we salute the residents of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District, people in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Yesterday they elected one of the most outstanding people any of us has ever met who is willing to be a public servant. You have done yourselves a great service and you have done this nation a great service.
I also want to thank the approximately 1,800 Blue America donors who contributed $6,600 to Donna’s campaign in 2006, and then came back this year and helped fuel her grassroots campaign with another $62,868. Donna has told me that without our immediate help after the narrow but heartbreaking defeat in 2006 she might not have been able to make it back for her smashing victory this year.
And make no mistake, this is a victory of monumental importance. Today’s Washington Post mentions that Donna is the first African-American woman to represent Maryland in Congress and that is a great milestone for that state. But I was thinking of something else when I mentioned "monumental." Donna Edwards is an archetypal progressive leader– a human game changer– who epitomizes what Blue America is all about. I have every confidence that she is bound for glory– or, more likely the U.S. Senate– but as a congresswoman I expect that she will be, like a handful of representatives, someone who is working full time for ordinary Americans– and not just working, but working smart. I was just a child when I met JFK, and not much older when I worked for RFK, and I’ve met my share of politicians– and then some– since. But I have to say that I’ve never met anyone as committed to solid values and principles who’s even considered running for office. On top of that, Donna is one of the most strategically-minded people I ever met.
Today is a great day for Maryland, a great day for Blue America and a great day for the United States of America. We need more progressive leaders like Donna Edwards. As part of the insidious incumbent protection program, Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi worked hard to defeat Donna. But Hoyer celebrated with her last night and Nancy plans to swear her in tomorrow.
Edwards said her first order of business will be a bill that would increase the minimum wage and tie it to inflation. She has also promised that until her bill or a similar one is enacted, she will donate her congressional pay raise to a scholarship fund for 4th District graduating seniors who are continuing their education. While Edwards would like to sit on the same congressional committee as Wynn– Energy and Commerce– there are no openings, so she says she would be interested in Education and Labor or Transportation and Infrastructure, both useful positions for a district with a substantial union base that also has traffic problems.
Yesterday we raised over $70,000 in one day to help hold Steny Hoyer accountable for betraying the Constitution, the Democratic Party and the American people. I would so much rather use that money to elect more progressive candidates like Donna, but unless we let our elected leaders know that we expect them to work for us, not for the corporations and not for criminals like Bush, we will exist in a netherworld between democracy and fascism forever.
If you want to help us make Steny Hoyer wish he had never thrown his lot in with Bush and Cheney, here’s the page. If you would like to help a progressive candidate defeat a corrupt and reactionary Democratic stooge (like Al Wynn, but much worse), please donate to Georgia state Senator Regina Thomas here. Or if you want to just put your money into retiring exceptionally bad Republicans, you can find a whole gaggle of them on our Blue America page– from James Inhofe (R-OK), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Mean Jean Schmidt (R-OH), David Dreier (R-CA) to Scott Garrett (R-NJ) and Tim Walberg (R-MI)– where we are helping solid progressives like (respectively) Andrew Rice, Debbie Cook, Vic Wulsin, Russ Warner, Dennis Shulman and Mark Schauer replace them.
But pat yourself on the back today because progressive America won a huge victory over the Insider power elite and you have been part of it. Thank you.

Thanks for coming back to FDL, Donna. We’re all so proud of you and we’re all so glad to be part of your momentous victory. We’re counting on you to fix everything Bush did in the last 7 years. Are you sworn in yet?
Welcome Donna and congratulations!
Donna! Congrats! w00t!
Congressmember Edwards (can we say that yet?), congratulations! More and better Democrats!
Congratulations Donna
Woo HOO!
Congratulations Donna, and also to Howie and all the folks who helped in the effort.
Will you be able to back Stehy Hoyer up against a wall anytime soon ? *g*
Welcome, Donna, and congratulations. Having watched you speak in person — at the Responsible Plan launch at Take Back America — I have little doubt that Howie is exactly right about the dynamic new style of progressive leadership you represent.
Does President Edwards in 2016 sound about right?
parabéns / congratulations Donna!
How excited you must be, Donna! How does it feel?
Welcome and congratulations, Donna!
Not that we had any doubt.
From the moment I met Donna, that’s what I thought too– except without a date-certain
Congratulations, Donna. Well done Howie.
Congresswoman Edwards!
w00t!1!
Congresswoman, could you make it your first official act to tap Congressman Hoyer on the shoulder and let him know that you could very well be the Ghost of Christmas Future unless he changes his ways on this execrable FISA legislation that he is pushing?
Congratulations Donna!
Take Nancy out back for an a**-whuppin on the impeachment issue please!
Hello FDL — It’s so great to be here with you today. Thank you for everything that the FDL community and the netroots have done to bring me this far — I won’t let our country down!
Donna!
My plan is to work with the Democrats in Congress and to convince them of the importance of protecting civil liberties and truly meeting the goals of the First Amendment through deeds.
Heh. We were saying that down in Puerto Rico, too.
Since you are taking Al’s seat how is it that there is ‘no opening’ on his committee? Seniority I suppose?
Just so you know, I will be sworn in tomorrow, Thursday, midday — tune in to C-Span — I will have one minute on the floor and I will use it judiciously.
In some ways your election is the culmination– so far– of all our efforts since we started Blue America. We appreciate your stamina and you doing this for America. Thank you so much, Donna.
Donna, I was just gobsmacked when you told us that you return corporate $$, along with a form letter explaining why. Do you think you’ll be able to convince any of your fellow Congresspeople to follow your lead?
I’m working with the Leadership now on prospective committee assignments. Trust me, wherever I land I will tackle the issues head on for our Congressional District and our country. We will not win every battle, but I will stand for truth, transparency and progressive values — also, I will get the nitty gritty work done too!
Your timing is perfect!
DON-NA! DON-NA! DON-NA! It really is ‘one of our own’ family here at the Lake to have helped you get elected. Just a really big thrill.
Congrats, Donna! Good to see you again around here!!
How has your welcome been to the Democratic caucus? I understand that there are some members there who might be a little sad to have seen Al Wynn leave the House, because they hold the same spineless positions he did on such issues as Iraq and warrantless wiretapping, as well as having a propensity for caving in to the Bush Administration on anything else they ask for.
Perhaps you can make it clear to them that standing up to the GOP is not something that need be feared.
Happy, happy sigh….
It’s been far too long that we’ve heard this from our Democratic representatives.
Hi Donna – can you talk about the SEIU’s upcoming “Accountability campaign” to recruit and help primary opponents for as many as ten Democratic races in 2010?
Thank you. I love you. Um, can you now please fix Steny Hoyer for us? As you know, he is on the verge of sellint the Constitution and country out to political and telco criminals in his big “FISA Compromise”. It is a small, teeny, tiny favor to ask (okay maybe a little bigger than that), but it really would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.
Actually we drawn a line — but I admit it is a tough line to walk. I do not accept corporate PAC contributions representing specific corporate interests. I do, however, accept contributions from individuals, some of whom work for corporations — we all work for someone! I do accept contributions from labor organization and ideological organization PACs — and depending, I may send some of those back. I will do the best I can to represent people and organizations representing people and not simply money and profit. I do need your help because running campaigns and staying in office and warding off challengers takes money — already the forces that lost are scheming to find someone to run against me in 2010 — can you believe it?
A victory for Maryland and a victory for Blue America! Congratulations to you and to your new constituents. I am mighty proud to have been a supporter of your campaigns from the start. Thanks very much, and thank you to your family for the sacrifices a campaign entails, and for lending you to your country for public service.
The future holds great things for you, Congresswoman-elect Edwards. Many people have put great stock in your leadership. Please fulfill your wonderful destiny!
Thanks for coming by to chat today. Do us proud, madame!
Donna! I’m so glad this day is here! Congratulations!
Donna — so glad you are here to celebrate a bit with us. And so glad we all get to celebrate — awesome job! Congratulations!
“already the forces that lost are scheming to find someone to run against me in 2010 — can you believe it?”
How DARE you upset the status quo?!
Keep it up!
Actually, many members have been tremendously welcoming — for which I am grateful. I can only be successful if I learn quickly to navigate these waters, higher smart and competent staff, and work hard. I need your help for all of this. I need you to keep the pressure on for accountability — makes us all better and challenges those who think differently. I want to get some things done and I will work smartly with my colleagues inside and out to make that happen.
Congresswoman Edwards!
Congratulations!
Welcome to the shark tank. FYI, as I am sure you are aware, here’s what you’re up against, Congressman David Obey (D-WI)
Obey funds war he votes against
Obey knows he can cut Pentagon budgets without “shutting down the government.” He’s playing on the basest fears of his constituents and ignoring his responsibility to impeach.
I never would have known about your campaign had it not been for Howie and Jane. Along with a lot of FDL’ers, I rely heavily upon them.
Find people like yourself (Dennis Kucinich comes to mind) and ask for his advice. Or anyone else you feel comfortable working with who shares your views.
I’m pinching myself — we planned this very deliberative transition during the summer and winter with a good startup in January 2009, who knew? In any case, I’m looking forward to serving and I know that this is about the 4th congressional district and our country. I take this responsibility very seriously and very humbly. Keep me on track!
Yes, Donna, learn, learn, learn because we plan to send you some new colleagues in January and we’ll be counting on you to show them the ropes. I think you’ve already met Darcy Burner and Sam Bennett. We have plenty in mind to be part of a team to make America a better place for more people.
I do believe that Howie was one of the first persons I ever communicated with back in 2006 when I first challenged. I’m grateful to Howie and Jane for embracing my candidacy and keeping me in touch with the FDL community. I plan to come back often to weigh in — and I will be following along with the discussions you generate and the challenges you put forward.
Yeah Donna! Congratulations. This is such a joy.
Ms. Edwards. I can’t stay, but just wanted to congratulate you on your win.
Now go to Congress and make us proud.
How are you doing on Donnations? Do you have a campaign debt?
I sat next to Sam Bennett last week and I exchanged text messages with Darcy on election night — I cannot wait for them to join me in Congress. I plan to figure out a way to be really helpful to a handful of candidates during the summer and fall now that I’m an incumbent. We need more and better Democrats to join our friends in the Congress.
Liberals raised $20,000 in sixty-minutes to defeat Steny in 2010.
Stopping Steny: Glennzilla Weighs In Big Time
Jane imho is a political genius. She picked Ned Lamont in January 2006 when his name recognition in CT was around 9%. She’s pragmatic, understands the issues you’ll be voting on in great detail, and has the moral/ethical core, we’re all looking for.
Congratulations, Congresswoman Edwards! I’m so proud for you! I will most certainly be watching tomorrow and enjoying the moment. I know your district very well, I worked at the now shuttered Westinghouse plant in Sykesville for several years in the nineties. Once again, my heartiest congratulations and I firmly believe you will soon be joined by a phalanx of better Democrats.
You came to the right place.
It does help, though, to know *when* pressure might best be applied, and to whom — just drop a quiet note to Howie, Christy, and/or Jane . . .
Thank you for your questions. I do still have a primary campaign debt — I had to make a strong and late response to Al Wynn during the primary when he levelled personal attacks. That leaves us with about $25k in primary debt — so if you can contribute to help me erase this debt, I would be grateful. Please designate it as debt relief.
Actually we’re over $85,000 now– in just 24 hours.
I’m looking forward to seeing you in action *g*
Hi Congresswoman Edwards. Like the ring of it? Good for you. Would you ask Senator Obama to come out in opposition to Telecom Immunity. I think you will find a friend in our Congresswoman Lois Capps. I spoke to both their local and national office today and they believe she will oppose it. She needs a nudge with impeachment please. Have a great Congressional career. We are so very happy for you. One other thing how about a light rail network for Maryland like Oregon has?
FDL — it’s time for me to go, but let’s just say that I believe in accountability. I think it is important for organizations representing people — women, children environmentalists, workers — to stand up and demand. I will need that kind of pressure to shore me up and I think others will take notice too.
Gotta run.
Tomorrow, midday — join me on CSPAN or in person in the Gallery.
Best,
Donna
If I send $25 to your Blue America page, does that help you erase it?
I’m very glad you brought that up. Constituents will look at how you handle their money and 25K is very understandable. It sounds like you managed your campaign very well.
Congratulations Congresswoman Edwards !
sic ‘em !
Bravo (((Blue America !)))
We’ll be watching your swearing in tomorrow! Thanks for coming by Donna and keep in touch.
This is a very rough radio ad that Regina Thomas wants to run in the Augusta market, the part of the congressional district that knows her least well. We have a generous donor who has agreed to match whatever we can raise for this project today. Please donate here so Donna has another progressive voice speaking out against Bush’s– and the Blue Dogs’– deprecations. Regina’s opponent, John Barrow, votes with the Republicans on contested, substantive matters more frequently than he votes with the Democrats.
I hope I’m not too late to the party. Let me blow my noisemaker, put on my party hat and throw some confetti!!!!!
Congratulations Donna! This was such a long time coming. Now, can you hurry up and get sworn in so you can stop this lunatic FISA “compromise” before it’s too late?
Not that I want you to feel any pressure or anything. Not that you might be the teensiest bit exhausted from that campaigning. Not that you might not need a second to stop and catch your breath. *g*
Seriously though, we need you to get in there ASAP. Your country needs a fresh strong voice standing up to the madness. I’m so glad it’s you.
driveby……………BRAVA
Ditto!
Jane is the
man! er…woman! I agree with you, I believe the much beloved Ms. Hamsher does show a certain aptitude for this sort of thing. “The Producer”, if you will…Bwahahahahaha!
And Steny’s district website has a nice list of local media outlets. That could be helpful in deciding where to spend that money.
Can you even imagine? What kind of message would that send? We need to start a “Send Steny Strolling” Fund! Does he have an opponent this cycle? Perhaps we can even build a warchest to finance a worthy in two years.
Thanks Howie.
Regina was so impressive in her FDL chat Blue America welcomes Regina Thomas
Thanks Howie.
I just called Steny’s DC office to share the good news with them. I was very polite, zero snark, just passing on information.
That fund is what Howie was talking about — see David’s post from yesterday.
I can hear the staffer: “Thank you for your call. I’ll see that Majority Leader Hoyer gets the message.”
I hope he *does* get the message — loudly and clearly.
oh I bet you were very polite indeed, and “civil” too – bwaahaaahaaa
Congratulations Donna!
…and welcome back. I’m glad for your victory and really appreciate your choice to join us today.
Congratulations Donna.
Great work.

Sorry
“But pat yourself on the back today because progressive America won a huge victory over the Insider power elite and you have been part of it. Thank you.”
And the same pat on the back right back attcha dear Howie.

New Jane upstairs
Jane has a brand new post up entitled, “Strange Bedfellows, Indeed!”
Howie, apologies for not reading all of the postings, and also for repeating a question I asked in an earlier thread, but here goes:
In an earlier thread, Cujo called your Blue America project on FISA, a “PAC Versus Retroactive Immunity,”
I found this address for Blue America:
Committee ID: C00427617
BLUE AMERICA PAC
PO Box 27201
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Treasurer Name: Klein, Howard
Could I mail a check to that address, earmarked for the FISA fight? Please? I don’t use credit cards and I can’t find any widget to send money to Blue America by PayPal.
Fractal, I’ve got an email in to Howie about the snail mail address, will get back to you.
Howie says yes, that is the correct address, and to please make sure you incude the following or else we can’t accept the donation:
Your address
Your occupation
Your employer
Thanks!
Love the name fractal btw.
thank you! also saw your answer upstairs.
