And no, I don’t believe we should be pounding on Obama on this

Glenn has updates to his blog on the FISA bill and the NYT has a great editorial on the Hoyer end run on FISA.

June 18, 2008
Editorial
Mr. Bush v. the Bill of Rights

In the waning months of his tenure, President Bush and his allies are once again trying to scare Congress into expanding the president’s powers to spy on Americans without a court order.

This week, the White House and Democratic and Republican leaders on Capitol Hill hope to announce a “compromise” on a domestic spying bill. If they do, it will be presented as an indispensable tool for protecting the nation’s security that still safeguards our civil liberties. The White House will paint opponents as weak-kneed liberals who do not understand and cannot stand up to the threat of terrorism.

The bill is not a compromise. The final details are being worked out, but all indications are that many of its provisions are both unnecessary and a threat to the Bill of Rights. The White House and the Congressional Republicans who support the bill have two real aims. They want to undermine the power of the courts to review the legality of domestic spying programs. And they want to give a legal shield to the telecommunications companies that broke the law by helping Mr. Bush carry out his warrantless wiretapping operation.

The overlap between Libertarians and Liberals

Is Liberty.

That was enough to build a country in 1776 and it’s enough to defend one now.

I’m not saying we don’t hold the leadership accountable. We should be giving them a chronic pain in the ass.

But it’s easier to seat a new progressive in a purple district than it is to remove an incumbent in a very blue district. Who would you get to run against Reid or Pelosi? who’d put up the money? can you get the votes for whomever it is you’d run? (Hell, it’s easier to put up a progressive in some red districts with Republicans at this point than field a primary candidate against one of these leaders.) Granted, grassroots people should try this to make a point, but they have to be willing to throw money at this realizing it will likely yield little.

It’s faster to take away the very tools that give them their power. Remove the Blue Dogs, give them nothing but progressives, and you are going to force them to play ball.

To be fair to Obama, he’s from Illinois, which has as its western border a river that’s been acting up recently. From an e-mail sent out by the campaign this morning (similar to one sent out a few days ago for Quincy and other locations):

Dear ———-,

Emergency sandbagging operations are going on right now in Canton, Old Monroe, where the river is expected to crest on Thursday or Friday.

Your help is desperately needed with sandbagging and other efforts.

If you can assist, please go to one of these areas this week:

OLD MONROE, MO

More volunteers are urgently needed.

To find out where to meet, please visit www.wffpd.org or call 636-566-8406.

CANTON, MO

AmeriCorps has set up a Volunteer Reception Center at the intersection of 5th and Lewis.

General sandbagging guidelines for volunteers: Bring sunscreen, work gloves, and sturdy shoes. Bring a shovel if possible. All youth under age 18 must be accompanied by a guardian or parent.

Call 573-819-0512 for more information.

More information on volunteering in flood-affected areas:

http://my.barackobama.com/…

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the recent flooding throughout the Midwest.

If you are not able to assist in these areas but would still like to help, visit the American Red Cross to donate to their relief efforts or find out how to get involved.

Thanks,
